Coming off of a rebuilding year in 2008, the ETSU volleyball team looks stronger than ever with a very experienced squad heading into the 2009 season. Head coach Lindsey Devine has had a lot of success since taking over the helm for the Buccaneers, making four straight Atlantic Sun conference tournament appearances. The 2008 season saw its share of ups and downs, but a first-ever A-Sun tournament victory over host Mercer highlighted the Buccaneer campaign. Devine returns all but three players from last year including six of the seven starters. Seniors Amanda Youell and Kristan Provchy are looking to make a statement in their final season in an ETSU uniform, while Whitney Cogburn, Erin Ryan, Lauren Baufield, Dani Howe and Desiree Dyck all have two years under their belt and have only continued to improve since stepping on campus in 2007. Dyck, who missed the first half of the 2008 season with an injury, hopes to return to the dominance she showed in her freshman year which earned her A-Sun All-Freshman Team honors. The Bucs will look for contributions from Jen Neice, Howe and Baufield in the back row. Neice had a great freshman campaign finishing third in the conference in digs and placed fifth all-time in the ETSU single season record book. She is an energetic defensive leader who is counted on for her consistent passing. Howe will look to improve upon her team-leading 40 aces in 2008 as she has developed an outstanding serve, while bringing the Bucs a primary passer and defensive catalyst. Baufield is a very versatile player who is capable of playing several positions. A returning team captain, Baufield’s leadership and competitive drive will fuel the ETSU success. Youell will be quarterbacking the Buccaneer offense, while Cogburn adds depth to the setter position. The pair combined for 1307 assists which was fourth best in the conference. Youell’s court perception and ability to spread the offense makes the ETSU attack strong. She also adds an extra threat on the offense with the ability to attack at any moment. At the net, the Bucs bring back a very deep group including a pair of A-Sun All-Freshman selections in McKayla Barber and Dyck. Barber had a very strong 2008 season, leading the team in blocks. Her athleticism and strong arm make her a go-to middle for the Bucs. Dyck has shown the ability to be one of the best outside hitters in the conference with her dynamic approach and powerful arm swing. Cogburn, a strong left-handed right side, will be another offensive option for the Buccaneers. Because of her versatility, Cogburn will be expected to play all the way around. ETSU also returns middle blocker Jamie Stancliff and outside hitter Erin Ryan. Both can put up big numbers for the Bucs. Joining the squad this season are Georgia State transfer Alysa Long and freshman Chentel Pate. Long’s great athleticism and outstanding vertical make her a dangerous

threat off the bench, while Pate is a true athlete who adds depth to the Buccaneer front row. The 2009 schedule will test the Bucs early with matches against Chattanooga, Morehead State and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Liberty. ETSU will also face a round robin conference format for the second straight year and will challenge Florida Gulf Coast, Belmont, Lipscomb and Jacksonville for the A-Sun title.

York ‘88 Head Coach Seventh Season

Players Season Review

Lindsey Devine begins her seventh season at the helm of the ETSU volleyball program, after leading the Bucs to a fourth straight Atlantic Sun Tournament appearance in 2008. Under Devine’s watch, a very young squad finished at 12-20 a year ago, winning their first Atlantic Sun Conference tournament match against Mercer. Devine saw freshman McKayla Barber excel in 2008 as she was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman and tournament team. In her six years as head coach, Devine has accumulated a total of 90 victories, along with five conference tournament appearances.

Opponents

Since Devine’s arrival at ETSU, her teams have had an equally impressive record in the classroom. In 2008, nine players earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors, including returnees McKayla Barber, Lauren Baufield, Desiree Dyck, Jen Neice, Kristan Provchy, Erin Ryan, and Jamie Stancliff, as well as departed players Kelley Coker and Mallory Kiley. Devine’s Lady Bucs accrued a team GPA of 3.18 for the 2008-09 academic year, ranking among the best in the ETSU athletic department.

History This is ETSU

Devine saw her first player reach the professional ranks in 2007 as former standout Crystal Palmer spent the year playing with AOK Osijek, Akademski (Academic) Odbojkaski (Women’s Volleyball) Klub (Club) of Osijek in Croatia. Also in 2007, another of Devine’s players, Kaena Apana, was named one of the top five liberos in the country by Collegiate Volleyball Update. Apana was seventh in the nation in digs, and broke four A-Sun records and three ETSU records. In 2006, the ETSU squad finished 25 - 7 overall, the most wins since 1991. This successful team set a new school record with a 17-match win streak en route to compiling a perfect 9-0 record in conference and captured the first A-Sun regular season title in school history. Seniors Nani Emerson and Jennifer Sartor and juniors Kaena Apana and Callie Kiselich all earned All-Conference honors, while Desiree Dyck was placed on the All-Freshman Team. Devine is USA Volleyball CAP 1 and Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory (IMPACT) certified, and has served as a court coach with the USA Volleyball High Performance for the past two years. Devine is also the head coach for Kingsport Volleyball Club 17. In a short three-year span since the founding of the club, she has raised the level of club volleyball in the state of Tennessee. Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, shared the conference’s male Scholar Athlete of the Year award and earned the conference’s Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’s Chereese Rowe earned the conference’s second Postgraduate Scholarship. Wicke earned national acclaim as he became one of just two men’s basketball players to receive an educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. For his dedicated academic success and community service, Wicke landed on the Lowe’s All-Senior All-America Second Team and was one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

The 2009-10 athletic year promises to be an exciting one for the Atlantic Sun as UNF and Kennesaw State earned full Division-I status and will be eligible for all postseason tournaments. FGCU’s champion volleyball and baseball programs and USC Upstate’s soccer and softball programs have also gained access to A-Sun and NCAA postseason play. For the first time in league history, Mercer and it’s University Center will play host to the General Shale Brick Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. The Baseball Championship leaves Florida for the first time in 16 years for Nashville, Tenn. and Lipscomb’s Dugan Field. FGCU landed its first championship, and will host volleyball in November. These new additions and venues make the upcoming year a hotly anticipated season for the Atlantic Sun.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Players

The experience for a student-athlete in the A-Sun is supported by the entire university community, from coaches to faculty, and from the CEO’s to the athletic and academic support staff. Atlantic Sun student-athletes compete in outstanding facilities throughout the conference and in some of top markets in the Southeast. Eight A-Sun schools compete in the top 10 media markets within the conference’s five-state footprint. With All-America selections, National All-Academic honorees, teams and individuals qualifying for and advancing in NCAA Championship play, Atlantic Sun student-athletes achieve at the highest levels of collegiate athletics.

In softball, the conference turned in one of its finest seasons in history, especially during the non-conference season. Against out-of-conference opposition, A-Sun schools posted a .602 win percentage, the fifth-highest in the nation, trailing only the SEC, Pac-10, ACC and Big 12. Five schools finished with win percentages better than .600 and FGCU and Mercer reached the 40-win mark. The Eagles established a league record for win percentage at .839 in posting a 47-9 record. For the second-consecutive May, Campbell emerged victorious at the A-Sun Championship, led by the dominating performance of MVP Brittany Stanley. She pitched all 31 innings, recorded two shutouts and struck out 26 against only two walks.

Coaches

For more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its studentathletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

During the baseball season, three A-Sun hurlers, Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers and Kennesaw State’s duo of Chad Jenkins and Kyle Heckathorn moved up the draft boards of Major League teams with every dominating performance. Brothers turned in one of the league’s top single-season strikeout performances; Jenkins posted a 41-inning scoreless streak and Heckathorn capped his season with a dominating 15-strikeout performance against UNF, earning National Player of the Week honors. On draft night, Jenkins became just the seventh A-Sun player to be a first-round selection, going to the Blue Jays. In the supplemental phase of the first round, the Rockies picked Rex Brothers and the Brewers tabbed Heckathorn.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS For the second straight season, the A-Sun made early headlines on the hardwood as Mercer, under new head coach Bob Hoffman, went on the road and defeated Alabama and Auburn within a four-day span, shooting the Bears up to the top spot in the RPI. At the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Championship, ETSU ended Belmont’s three-year reign, winning its first A-Sun Tournament title and making the NCAA field for the eighth time. During the Championship, Courtney Pigram became just the second player in league history to reach the 2000point plateau. Two players could reach that mark this season in Mercer’s James Florence and Campbell’s Jonathan Rodriguez. Florence and Campbell begin the season as the second- and third-highest active scorers in the nation.

Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 25th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.
