NARRATIVE + MISSION Located in Kansas City, Kansas, on the easternmost end of Jersey Creek Park in the Turtle Hill community, the One Family | One Roof Project is designed to provide affordable housing for low-income families as well as youth in transition.

Affordable housing for families is essential in this area because it has some of the lowest incomes in the state, with annual family incomes averaging $9,000 to $17,000 a year.1 In addition to families struggling to afford housing, they are also struggling to provide food for their children. According to a 2017 Wyandotte County Community Health Assessment, “(m)ore than 1 in 3 households reported they sometimes or often worry about running out of food before there was money to buy more.”2 The One Family | One Roof project aims to provide relief for these families by providing a NourishKC Corner Deli, which features a “pay as you can” grocery store, farmer’s market, and community kitchen for cooking demonstrations.

In addition to providing affordable housing, the One Family | One Roof project also acts as a bridge between Jersey Creek Park and Grant Elementary School, providing safe play spaces and after-school programs for children. In Wyandotte County, nearly 48% of all children surveyed reported one or more case of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), which is typically related to abuse, neglect, or domestic violence.2 High proportions of children who reported ACE were African American or Hispanic, and Grant Elementary School has a 95% minority student body.3 As a result of these troubling statistics relating to ACE, the One Family | One Roof project is partnering with YouthBuild, a non-profit

organization dedicated to developing ethical young leaders dedicated to changing the conditions of poverty through global civic engagement. Through this partnership and in tandem with safe, fun, and appealing spaces for children to play, the One Family | One Roof project can help kids grow to be contributing members to their community.

This proposal seeks to build on latent assets such as nearby Jersey Creek Park and N 5th St. Similar to the work done on the Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans,4 Jersey Creek is a long and narrow stretch of grass that has the potential to transform into an invaluable source of recreation for nearby residents.

While Jersey Creek in its entirety is a mostly blank canvas that is ripe for improvement, the One Family | One Roof project aims to develop the park on its easternmost end. These improvements include more accessible sidewalks and walking trails, space for a farmers market, and a full-size basketball court, all adjacent to the building.
