QUICK FACTS

2009 MEDIA GUIDE FROM THE PRESIDENT Soccer is a great game, and Cornish Field is one of the most beautiful places to watch the game I have ever seen. When you are between the rows of pine trees watching our men play soccer, you’ll enjoy every minute of the experience. We are excited to be playing another season of soccer with high expectations for our well-respected program. This promises to be a strong year for the Tigers under Head Coach Jose Alonzo. Although the media guide gives facts and figures about the men who play and coach, we also hope that you’ll be able to see their hearts as they play the game. We hope you’ll notice their character as well as their competitive drive. And we hope that you know they are as committed to academic pursuits as they are to winning on the field. At East Texas Baptist University our student athletes are student athletes. These men are not playing for a scholarship, but for the love of the game. And, we play soccer because we believe it contributes to the educational mission of the University. These students are learning not just in the classrooms, but in team meetings, through diligent practice, by lifting weights and conditioning their bodies, in one-on-one conversations with coaches and fellow players, and on the field. As a University, we’re also committed to the truth found in Scripture that reminds us, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” 1 Timothy 4:3. This soccer team is being fit for success in this life and the life to come. That, to me, is a good reason to cheer them on. GO TIGERS!
