ecently, I represented the City of Tamarac in Washington, D C , where I met with our senators and representative to discuss ways they can help Tamarac residents facing housing, food, utility and job insecurities. I also had the pleasure of meeting with representatives from the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Office of Intergovernmental Relations. From this visit, I have much to report.

We discussed the impor tance of providing funding for energy- efficient upgrades in our Cit y ’s infrastruc ture, facilities and parks . We also discussed the need for environmental protec tion and sustainabilit y initiatives . Additionally, we focused on how the federal government can suppor t communit y and economic development

In each meeting, I emphasized Tamarac-specific needs and how federal suppor t can benefit our residents . I listened closely to the perspec tives and conce rns of the officials I met with , and identified ways to collaborate on mutually beneficial goals

Overall, it was a great oppor tunit y to advocate for Tamarac and its residents . I look for ward to continued engagement with federal officials and agencies on Tamarac ’s behalf.

Upon my return from Washington , I visited with communities at the far eastern point of my distric t and took notice of two projec ts that I long

advocated for. The Prospec t Road buffer walls , and C aporella Park

The buffer walls along Prospec t Road have been a long time coming; but it ’s great to see the projec t finally taking shape. These walls will help to reduce noise pollution and improve safet y for pedestrians and cyclists along this busy road

Construction of Caporella Park ’s upgrades are truly impressive. The new playground equipment, floating dock, amphitheater and picnic facilities are already appealing to families. The improved lighting and landscaping will make the park a more welcoming place for ever yone

It ’s clear that our effor ts to improve safet y, accessibilit y and qualit y of life in this par t of town are paying off. I ’m grateful to my colleagues who work feverishly with me to realize the goals I have set for my distric t and the Cit y as a whole. I look for ward to continuing to work together to create an even better future for our communit y.

I can always be reached at (95 4) 275 -3 8 50 (no text messages).

See You Soon ,

A few weeks ago, during an impor tant visit to Washington , D.C ., members of the Tamarac Cit y Commission visited a number of elec ted officials representing our area and several federal agencies . At one of our stops , a federal employee we encountered asked if we were from Tamarac , FL . We replied , “yes ” The individual went on to let us know that they too were from Tamarac , and af ter ser ving our Nation’s militar y, they are now working in the highest echelon of public ser vice. This individual was proud to be from Tamarac . We were proud to see one of our own in such a prestigious position

I know 1 0, 20 and 30 years from now we’ll see many Tamarac graduates of today in prestigious positions

WATE R SAF ET Y

Many Floridians spend hot summer days relaxing by the pool. Despite the many poolside smiles and laughs summer brings , tragedy can strike without warning when safet y isn’t at the forefront of our minds . According to the Florida Depar tment of Health , the Sunshine State leads the nation in drowning deaths of children , ages 1 to 4 Nationally, drowning is also the number one killer of children within that age group.

Florida is surrounded by water and many homes have backyard pools. Teaching children to swim is essential. The City of Tamarac’s Caporella Aquatic Center offers swim lessons and other helpful water safety programs. To learn more visit www.Tamarac.org/539.

Helpful Water Safety Reminders

Here are a few tips to help keep your little ones safe near water

• Never leave a child alone in or near water, not even to refill your drink . According to the U. S . Army Corps of Engineers , it only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown That ’s about the same amount of time it takes to read and respond to the average text message.

• Leave all distrac tions , including your phone and tablet, inside and keep a close eye on those in the pool. Not only does drowning happen q uickly, in many cases , it ’s a silent tragedy.

• Install fences and alarms around your pool or lake. It can save a life!

• C all Tamarac Fire Rescue at (95 4) 5973 8 0 0 or visit w w w Tamarac org/421 to sign up for CPR and first-aid training.
