American letters begin and end in certain ways.

Business correspondence and other formal letters follow a particular format. The address of the writer and date go in the top right-hand corner of the page.

Lower down on the left side one puts the name or the title and the address of the person to whom the letter is being written.

If the name of the person being addressed is not known, one writes To Whom it May Concern after the heading.

One ends this type of letter by writing Sincerely.

When one writes to someone whose name is known, one begins by writing, Dear Mr. ... or Dear Ms. ..., and ends by writing Sincerely yours, Yours truly, or, less formally, Regards.

Letters written to friends do not have such a formal heading. One simply writes the date in the upper righthand corner and starts the letter with Dear...

One can end this type of letter in many ways. Two of the more common ways are simply to sign one's name, or to write Love and then sign one's name.
