12 TIPS FOR EFFECTIVELY WORKING FROM HOME

While the world is dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus), you may find yourself working remotely for the first time or working remotely more than usual. Not to worry, the 12 tips below will help you stay on track, work effectively and maintain a sense of normalcy in these uncertain times. Maintain Regular Work Hours Maintaining your regular nine-to-five schedule will make things feel normal, help you stay on top of tasks, keep you from overworking and help you maintain a work-life balance. Schedule Regular Breaks Give yourself some time away from computers and phones throughout the day. Much like when you’re in the office, an hour lunch break and two fifteen-minute breaks will do you some good and help you stay productive.

Overcommunicate When working remotely it’s important to let people know that you’re working and what you’re working on. Respond promptly to emails and messages. Communicate your daily availability and schedule and when you wrap up a project or task. Take Breaks in their Entirety Use the full amount of your breaks just as you would if you were in an office. If you’re allotted an hour for lunch, take an hour for lunch. You can use an on-screen clock or a timer to track your break time.

Keep a Dedicated Office Space If you don’t have a home office, dedicate some space at a desk, or even the kitchen table, for your work area. This will help you separate work time from personal time. You can also change your scenery, work outside and get some fresh air.

Socialize with your Colleagues Working remotely can spark feelings of loneliness and disconnection. It’s okay to reach out to your colleagues and discuss things that aren’t work-related. It could be anything from the weather to recipe ideas for dinner. Anything to give you a sense of human interaction.

Create a Morning Routine Creating a morning routine or before-work routine can help you get the day started. It can be anything from having a cup of coffee, stretching and meditating, or listening to your favorite genre of music.

Set a Time for Household Chores As tempting as it may be, your time working from home should not be spent completing household chores. Doing chores randomly throughout the day can be distracting. Instead, maybe add chores to your before-work or after-work routine.

Use a VPN When working from a network you don’t control, it’s best to use a VPN for safety reasons. Make sure you have access to your company’s VPN so you can securely access internal websites and servers. Look for Training Opportunities When your workload is a little light, looking for training opportunities is the perfect task to fill time. This can range from online courses to one-on-one training with a colleague or manager.

Be Positive When working from home, chances are you’re mostly communicating with your colleagues digitally, which means you can’t hear voices or tones. Be cognizant of this when writing emails or chat messages. Do your best to ensure what you say reflects a tone of positivity so that nothing is misunderstood. End Your Day with a Routine Similar to starting your day with a routine, ending your day with a routine is just as important. Choose one thing that’ll signify the end of your workday and the start of your personal time.

From Me To You... I don’t know if you dream, or if you remember those dreams but I have very vivid dreams which I usually remember. Every night I go to sleep thinking what will my next dream be? Sometimes I dream of things that have been bothering me during the day, sometimes I find a solution to something I have been pondering, sometimes my dreams are just random and erratic.

For example there was this one time when I was a child, probably about 16, and it was the night before a big exam (similar to the SATs). I fell asleep and dreamed that I was potato, baking in the oven. I was warm and comfy, quite content to be there, and then I heard a ‘ding’. “Oh!” I thought, “Time to turn over and bake the other side!” So I turned over. Then a couple of minutes later I thought, “Hold on, that was the alarm. I have to get-up-and-go to school!” and this is where it gets really weird because at that point I remember thinking, “Don’t be silly Catherine, potatoes don’t go to school!” and went back to sleep.

For those of you that are concerned about the exam, my mother did come in and wake me up so I was actually able to go to school on time and take the exam, but this just goes to show how crazy my dreams can be.

Many times I dream I am driving and the brakes don’t work properly. I can slow down, but never come to a complete stop no matter how hard I push on the pedal. People who believe in dream interpretation would say I am worried that I am not in control of something in my life. That could be true, I have 4 kids, a husband, two unruly dogs, family who live far away, and a business we run from home. Many people report dreams of flying. That sounds like fun, but sadly I have never had that dream. Apparently that one means you feel in control of your life, so I get why I don’t dream I am soaring over Arizona. Anyone dream of showing up at school or work naked? That one is always jarring. Here is another one that is much more recent and pertinent. Last night, in my dream, I was sitting in a parked car waiting for my husband to come out of Safeway. As I watched, a woman opened the trunk of the car opposite me, climbed in, and shut herself inside. A different woman was singing hymns and praying loudly beside the car. It doesn’t seem too hard to figure out what that means. Anyone else drawing parallels to the current situation of us shutting ourselves inside with others praying for our safety? Dreams are so important now, the dream of a world where we can gather with friends and family safely, the dream of going to a movie, and the dream of letting our children attend school again. I dream that we will get back to that world, perhaps not quite as easily or in such a carefree way, but in a new way. Let’s hope that dreams can come true.

Yum Yum

Even if you try to keep to a healthy diet and work out regularly, chances are there are times of day when your energy fades, or entire days when you just don’t feel like you’re on the right track. Between the constant demands on your time from work and family, it can be tough to stay energized all day long. Here are some easy tips for ways to boost your energy and add more pep to your step, throughout your day. 1. Protein-up your breakfast You probably know you shouldn’t skip breakfast, and many of us have to eat it on the go, but there’s more you can do - your energy level will thank you later if you add more protein to the first meal of the day. * Fix a quick omelet or scrambled eggs * Add 1-2 servings of Egg Whites to your smoothie or protein shake * Try this recipe for Strawberry Protein Pancakes, which your whole family can enjoy:

Ingredients 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 1/2 cup old fashioned oats 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/3 cup Egg Whites 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, chopped Instructions Blend everything except the strawberries together, until there are no remaining chunks. Set chopped strawberries aside. Heat a nonstick pan to medium high (a large or pancake pan works best). Pour batter onto the pan in small circular shapes, then sprinkle chopped strawberries on each pancake. When the pancakes start to bubble, flip and cook the other side. Top with more strawberries, low-sugar maple syrup, Greek yogurt or whatever calorie-conscious topping you like! 2. Plan ahead Pack protein-rich snacks to bring with you on the go, so you have healthy options handy to give you a quick pick-me-up throughout your day, especially when you feel your energy is fading. Small snacks throughout the day won’t make you feel sleepy the way a large meal can. * Nuts with little or no added salt or oil * Low-fat cheese * Meat sticks * Greek yogurt without added sugar 3. Stay hydrated Often energy levels can drop when you’re dehydrated. Be proactive to keep yourself ready for anything. * Bring along a reusable water bottle to sip throughout the day. * Pack a protein smoothie or shake for lunch to prevent the dreaded afternoon slump. Following these tips will help you be at your best, all day long. For more recipes to power your day, visit BobEvansEggWhites.com.

Travel

as America eases back into more extensive air travel, but you may find even less-expensive (and less-congested) flights on the slowest travel days of the week - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Everyone has a touch of cabin fever after the worldwide coronavirus lockdowns,” writes Christopher Elliott in USA Today. “So it’s no surprise people want to travel soon. Whether it’s a cabin in the woods or a cruise ship cabin, Americans are dreaming of their next trip - and not just dreaming but booking.” Many Americans are also closely watching their budgets right now, but with a little extra planning, we should still be able to enjoy fun, relaxing getaways without having to break the bank. In that spirit, here are a few money-saving tips for your next trip. * Consider a nature-focused vacation. Hiking or sightseeing amidst America’s natural beauty can be a cost-effective alternative to the hefty admission fees attached to theme parks and other key attractions. You may also find it easier to maintain social distancing guidelines in the great outdoors. * Seek out mid-week airfares. Not only are you likely to find attractive airfares

* Spend your food dollars wisely. You may wish to make great food a major highlight of your trip, but if you’d rather use your money elsewhere you can use strategies like self-packed lunches, the free continental breakfasts at your hotel, restaurants where kids eat free and water instead of pricey drinks. When you do dine out, make lunch your biggest meal of the day and avoid higher-priced dinner menus. * Optimize credit cards that offer travel rewards. Options include general purpose cards that pay rewards on all travel purchases or brand-specific cards that reward only for spending money on specific airlines or hotels. Do expect annual fees and do pay monthly balances in full to avoid interest charges, forfeited rewards and/or negative impacts to your credit rating. Your next vacation need not take a big bite out of your budget if you plan ahead. Road Blocks

As a teen, my mission in life was to never be like my father. The worst day of my life was the day I realized I was just like him. That was the day I realized I had to do more than think I wanted to be different…I had to do something to become different…and that is how my worst day has now become my best day. There are four Roadblocks to Change, the first being the 90% Rule; we have a 90% chance of being just like our parents. It is a combination of DNA and our childhood environment. Quotes like, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” “From one generation to the next,” and “History repeats itself,” all refer to the 90% rule. When I decided to change, I put all my focus on my “habits,” which is the second Roadblock to Change. If we are going to change – this is the place where all change happens. You must change your habits. NASA discovered it takes between 27 – 29 days for the brain to rewire itself with a new habit or behavior. That’s where the idea that it takes thirty consecutive days to integrate a new habit comes from.

The keyword here is — consecutive. NASA also discovered that if you miss a day (let’s say — day twenty-five), the system in the brain collapses, and you’ve got to start over. So how does one go about doing this successfully? Make a 30-day checklist! As an example, let’s say you want to change the habit of procrastinating or putting things off till the last minute. The first step is to focus on what you want. The opposite of putting things off is to take action or “do it now.” On my checklist would be a line or box that says, “Do It Now.” At the end of each day, I follow-through on my commitment. I check the box or put a number in the box to remind me of how many consecutive days I have completed. If I realize I did not follow through on my commitment today, I now have the opportunity to do it now. We call this setting yourself up to win. You arrived at the end of your day and realized you still have a chance to do it now! I bet that you will. I need to close a loop here, because some of you are thinking he said there were four roadblocks. Roadblock number three is the four-letter “F” word, and it is not food…it is fear. Which is the number one reason people don’t change and stay stuck. Rather than deal with the fear or anxiety, many use roadblock number four, which is distraction or medication. We have to ask ourselves, “How do I distract or medicate myself, so I do not have to deal with changing and becoming my best?” Success Tip: Put all your focus on Roadblock #2, for that is where change takes place. Mental Stress During these uncertain times, it has never been more important to take care of your mental health. Everybody deals with stress throughout their life, but the way it presents itself can be different for every person. With individuals being asked to spend long periods of time in one location, stress may be exhibiting itself in different ways. How does stress affect you?

Mental stress can manifest itself through headaches, tiredness, low energy and even insomnia. If you notice that certain events make you feel this way, you can practice self-care to prioritize yourself, your health and stress management in order do deal with the stresses of everyday life. Our bodies are designed to handle stress for only short periods of time. When you are being chased by a bear, your body responds by raising your blood pressure and pulse to pump more oxygen through your muscles. Instinctually, your body prioritizes what you need for survival and puts everything else on the back burner. But your body doesn’t know the difference between

running away from a bear and the everyday issues that contribute to chronic stress. The fight or flight response was meant to get us away from danger and then to be turned off. But when the stressors don’t go away, our health and wellbeing suffer. This is where we can practice putting the stress aside with self-care. While self-care can look different to each person, here are a few ideas to help get you started. 1. Quiet your mind When you want to turn down the volume in your head, pay more attention to your senses by meditating, breathing exercises, going on a walk, taking a warm bath or lighting candles. You can also write down what is stressing you out, followed by writing down things you are grateful for. Journaling our thoughts in this order helps us reduce negative self-talk and improve mood. 2. Do something you love To take your mind off things, put more intention into doing the things that you enjoy such as painting and drawing, playing with your cat or dog, watching your favorite movie, or video chatting with friends. Or you can get creative and try something new such as baking, knitting or crafting. Pick up that book you have been meaning to read for years, start organizing your collection of playing cards. 3. Get active and stay healthy Exercising a little bit everyday has been proven to help boost overall happiness. Find an active outlet such as hiking (we have great trails in Arizona!), yoga or kickboxing. Since we’re spending more time at home, many individuals have made their exercise videos available for free. Be sure to fill your body with healthy fats and proteins while avoiding your sugar intake. Focusing on your physical health, including what you eat has a positive impact on your mental health. Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

16

Estrella Publishing

Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Car Health

Not driving as often right now? Here’s how to keep your car fresh During a season that’s usually devoted to adventure, many of us have been forced to stick a little closer to home. When it’s finally time to return to our globetrotting ways, it’s vital to make sure our vehicles are ready. That means taking active steps now, while our cars are mostly idle. How do we make sure they’re in top shape for the journeys to come? There’s no one better to ask than Charles, the Humble Mechanic, whose YouTube tips have helped millions get the most out of their vehicles. Get charged up If you’re charged up for adventure, we don’t blame you. As we wait for the pathway to become clearer, Charles notes it’s important for our batteries to stay charged, too. “Things like big temperature swings and not being driven for extended periods of time cause extra strain on the vehicle battery,” he says. “With the average life span of a vehicle battery being three to five years, we want to do everything we can to keep it healthy.” The key to getting your battery in gear? Using it regularly will keep it charged. Other tips include making sure your car is locked - so all computer systems know to sleep - and unplugging items from your cigarette lighter.

inflated - you can typically find your car’s recommended psi level inside the driver’s side door jamb or owner manual. Embrace the fluid situation Check your dipstick to make sure your oil is at the right level. Check the other fluids while you’re at it, seeking out a dealer for help with tougher-to-measure fluids. Keep your motor running “Cars are meant to be driven,” says Charles. “Cars with high miles always seem to have fewer issues than cars that were barely driven. I take my cars for a cruise every 10-14 days. This gets the tires up to temperature and rolling, the fluids circulating, and the battery charged. Windows down and radio up is also good to clear the brain.” Here’s to recharging now, so we’re ready for the days when the journey is beautiful once again.

Be entirely confident Tires are your car’s only safety device that touches the road. While you wait to head back onto the highway for an extended trip, make sure they’re in excellent working order. There’s a danger to look out for if your car has been sitting for a long time: flat-spotting, or isolated flattening in parts of the tire that are in contact with the ground. The easiest fix: driving your car at least once each week. Use the penny test to check tread depth, and use a tire pressure gauge to ensure they’re properly Estrella Publishing

The Bug Guy Essential, non-essential, what does that really mean? During this time it seems as though this distinction in society is important. I admit there are a wide range of jobs that are “essential”, but I think we are all essential. Without each one of us doing our part we would not have a society to be a part of. We have always come together in times of crisis as a country, which is and always has been ou strength. As we move forward through this crisis please remember one simple fact, “we are all in this together”. Here in the valley we have been lucky in that we have experienced a low-level outbreak of COVID-19 compared to other areas. As we begin to open local businesses, we can make informed decisions about how to proceed personally. The professional pest control industry has always played an important role in the protection of public health and property. Consider that rodents contaminate or consume about 20 percent of the world’s food supply, and other pests spread disease such as West Nile virus and

Lyme disease. Stinging insects force hundreds of thousands of people to the emergency room each year. Without the critical work of the professional pest control industry, these alarming statistics would be so much worse. At home, the insects that have always frustrated us as part of daily lives and will likely continue to do so. While we are adapting to change, we are not the only things on this earth that experience change. Insects are known to adapt easily to changes in environment and are already quickly adjusting to our new normal. The tower of cardboard boxes waiting to be safely broken down from increasing home deliveries, as one example, make excellent hiding spots for scorpions and crickets in your garage. We in the pest control industry stand ready to help you preserve the quality of life you have today. Continuity of this important service allows us to continue to do our part to protect homes and businesses, and most importantly protect your family and loved ones, from pest-related threats. Money Matters During the coronavirus pandemic, our health concerns – for ourselves and our loved ones – have been at the top of our minds. But financial worries have been there, too, and one aspect of every individual’s total financial picture has become quite clear – the importance of an emergency fund.

a budget, but they all typically involve identifying your income and expenses and separating your needs and wants. You may be pleasantly surprised at how painless it is to follow a budget. For example, if you’ve budgeted a certain amount for food each month, you’ll need to avoid going to the grocery store several times a week, just to pick up “a few things” – because it doesn’t really take that many visits for those few things to add up to hundreds of dollars. You’ll be much better off limiting your trips to the grocery, making a list of the items you’ll need and adhering to these lists. After doing this for a few months, see how much you’ve saved – it may be much more than you’d expect. Besides using these savings to strengthen your emergency fund, you could also deploy them toward longer-term investments designed to help you reach other objectives, such as retirement.

Even in normal times, it’s a good idea for you to keep three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid, low-risk account. Having an emergency fund available can help you cope with those large, unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a costly medical bill. Furthermore, if you have an adequate emergency fund, you won’t have to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term Saving money is always a good idea, and when needs. Positive Parenting Transitioning to kindergarten can be an exciting, anxiety-filled time for children and their parents. By focusing on the present and adding skillbuilding activities to your summer, your child will be more confident about becoming a kindergartener. Whether you are hanging out at home, or enrolling your child in a summer camp, it is important to incorporate enjoyable activities that stretch their imaginations and exercise their brains. Reading - Read to and have your future kindergartener read to you as much as possible. Getting Fresh Air and Exercise - Create a backyard obstacle course to run, skip or jump through safely - add a sprinkler to help stay cool! Keeping Up with Friends - Keeping up with your children’s preschool friends over the summer will help them continue developing the social skills they will need to make new friends. Play Your Part You’ve probably heard the term “essential worker.” You might even know a few. Among them are those in the medical profession, education and food production. And they’re working hard to keep our nation going during the COVID-19 crisis. That’s why workplaces are putting extra measures in place to keep them protected. But have you ever thought about the role you play in keeping essential workers safe? We all factor into that equation. Here are a few ways to protect yourself, your loved ones and the essential workers you might encounter. Choose actions that protect others. Keeping a safe distance from others takes many forms. If you do decide to go out in public: Keep those trips to a minimum, make sure you stay at least six feet away from others, avoid large gatherings (10 or less is best), follow directional signs in stores, and of course, wear a mask the correct way. If you don’t know where to find a mask, check for sales through social media classifieds or watch tutorials to make one yourself. Let’s be clear: Masks don’t keep you safe, but they might keep the person next to you safe. In grocery stores and other places where social distancing is a challenge, wearing a mask can help ensure you don’t spread infection to others. Communities that practice good social distancing play a key role in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing or even breathing, it could also be transmitted through shared surfaces. Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds helps ensure you don’t transfer the virus from a shopping cart to your face or vice versa. And don’t forget hand sanitizer. If you are unable to wash your hands the traditional way, the “CDC recommends consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.” When in doubt, stay home. If you feel like you may be sick, or getting sick, just stay home. This reduces the potential spread of any illness you may knowingly, or unknowingly, be carrying. Even if you don’t feel sick, it’s a good general rule to stay home unless you really need to venture out for work or basic items. Imagine cutting out a single errand a week, like making one trip to the grocery store instead of two. It could mean you avoid close contact with dozens of other customers. Essential workers in your area are depending on the safe habits of people like you. The next time you enjoy a meal, receive medical care or turn on your lights, think about the hardworking people who made that happen - and what you can do to keep them healthy. Remember, in the fight against COVID-19, we all have a part to play.

Wash those hands as often as possible. Did you know, if you’re like most people, that you touch your face 23 times ... an hour? While COVID-19 is believed to spread through 24

Health Care Powers of Attorney The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted. Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when

there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney. Our closed sales were a little slow so far in May, but a 2-week ‘snapshot’ is not really indicative of the overall market as we are still on pace with 2019 closings. Current inventory is typical for this time of year, COVID-19 notwithstanding. Sale prices are not declining at the moment and even the days on market is on pace with this same period in 2019. As travel restrictions are lifted & a level of stability returns, we expect to see a return to a higher level of overall activity in our market throughout the summer.
