Are you making plans for summer travel with your pet? Here are some things to think about: If your pet is a nervous traveler, talk to your vet about medications or supplements to calm her nerves while travelling. Ensure your pet is current on all vaccinations and preventative medications such as heartworm, flea, tick and parasite. Check your pet’s ID tags to be sure they contain your current contact information and that your dog’s microchip is still in place and scannable. Take the phone numbers of your vet, the National Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435) and a 24-hour emergency vet hospital in the area where you will be visiting. Check if any natural dangers in the area could threaten your pets’ safety and health (i.e., mosquitos, ticks, weather emergencies or fires). Pack your four-legged companion’s medical and vaccine records, especially if you plan to enter other countries. These records may be required to cross the border with your pet.

Are you traveling by car? Take plenty of potty breaks and ensure your pet is well hydrated. Before flying with your furry friends, find out where they can relieve themselves at departure and arrival airports. And don’t forget those poop bags! Carry your pet’s food and medicine on your person in case your luggage goes missing, and tuck a favorite toy inside your suitcase to help soothe any stress your pet may experience.

Wherever your plans take you and your fourlegged companion this summer, a little planning goes a long way to helping them stay safe, healthy and happy.
