EAGM summer camps begin The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM) has kicked off what will be another busy month for its Artist in the Making summer art camps. The first camp, Diversity in Art, opened on July 4 and will continue until July 7. Sixteen youths were registered for the camp, and could participate in either morning or afternoon sessions. “This week we’re doing art based on different cultures from around the world,” said Martina Veneziano, who is the EAGM’s educator. “We’re making drums from Africa, dream catchers and batiks from Indonesia.” The next camp will be two-dimensional and threedimensional art from July 11 to 14. Then the Art in Advertising Camp will run from July 18 to 21, and Art and Activity will be July 25 to 28. The 2D and the 3D camp has the most registrants thus far. “We’re going to be doing a bit of drawing, some sculpt-

ing and some mosaics with beans,” said Veneziano. The Art in Advertising Camp, in which the young people learn about the newspaper industry and create ads that appear in the Estevan Mercury, has traditionally been their most popular camp. The final camp will feature such activities as pendulum paintings, a paint fight and more. The summer camp program will wrap up July 28 with an exhibit that features works created by the students this summer. The exhibit starts at 5 p.m. in the arts tent that will be at the EAGM for the Saskatchewan Summer Games. “They’re going to choose one or two things that they’ve made,” said Veneziano. She is happy with the number of young people who have registered already, and they are still accepting participants. They have limits for each camp, because if they have too many young people registered, they won’t have enough space for them to complete the projects.

Nevaeh Wakely was among the participants in the first summer camp offered by the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum this year.

Sun Country budget will go to board July 19 The leadership team at Sun Country Health Region will present the 2016-17 operating budget to their regional health authority for approval at a special meeting slated for July 19 in Weyburn. The budget, which is usually prepared and forwarded to the provincial Ministry of Health in May, was delayed this year due to the April 4 provincial general election and the subsequent delay in the presentation of the provincial government’s

budget. The audited financial statement from 2015-16 will be presented at the special session, which will be conducted in the health region’s headquarters at Tatagwa View. During their June 29 business session, board members learned that 22 concerns were received from the public between April and mid-June, concerning care, emergency transportation, home care, mental health, support services and pri-

mary health services. Three of those matters regarded issues pertaining to other health regions or information from the Ministry of Health. All concerns were dealt with by the region’s quality care co-ordinator. Prior to the business meeting, saskdocs announced that new family doctors are practicing in Arcola and Radville in the Sun Country Health Region thanks to the recent results posted by the Saskatchewan International Physician Prac-

tice Assessment (SIPPA) program. Dr. Remon Ghaly has taken up practise in Arcola while Dr. Helen Mbata has entered practise in Radville and Weyburn, joining other international medical graduate colleagues already practicing thanks to the SIPPA program, a made-in-Saskatchewan project, that assesses international medical graduates (IMG) on their education and clinical abilities before allowing them to practise medicine. The program was initiated in 2011 and more than 190 new family physicians have completed the assessment and are practicing in the province. Sun Country noted that Dr. Hamid Bimesl will be joining the Weyburn Primary Health Clinic this month. A total of 10 new IMG graduates from the May

intake at SIPPA are now completing their field assessments. If successful, they will begin practising across the province this fall. “Saskdocs works closely with each SIPPA candidate from each iteration from the day they arrive to when they begin to practise medicine,” said Dr. Dennis Kendel, saskdoc’s CEO. “It is great to see them make it through to the next stage of their career and reassuring to know that they have made it through this rigorous program and are delivering quality, teambased care to the people of this province.” During the June 29 meeting, Sun Country board members learned their safety management team was on target in their effort to reduce Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) claims by 25 per cent during the current fiscal year. As of May 31, the

region had accepted 14 WCB claims with the goal having been set at less than 17. The same team reviewed survey data from four facilities in the region that showed 92 per cent of patients and families would feel comfortable speaking to staff if they had a safety concern. About 176 employees attended the region’s Quality Symposium in late May with the Weyburn Special Care Home staff receiving an award for improvement to environmental cleaning and the use of audits. The annual Dave Galloway Memorial Award for quality was presented to the new long-term care intake and placement team. Susan Viergutz and Leila McClarty were recognized for the work done in partnership with long-term care, acute care and home care.
