Rocky Mountain National Park Announces Winter Pile Burning Operations Fire managers from Rocky Mountain National Park plan to take advantage of any upcoming wet or winter weather conditions to burn piles of slash generated from several fuels reduction projects and hazard tree removals. Slash from these projects has been cut and piled by park fire crews and contractors during the last two years and are now dry enough to burn.

When fighting the Fern Lake Fire in 2012, firefighters were able to take advantage of previous and existing prescribed fire and hazardous fuels treatment areas that provided a buffer between the fire and Estes Park. Prior hazard fuels projects were instrumental in stopping the fire from jumping Bear Lake Road.

Pile burning operations will only begin when conditions allow. They may begin as early as January and continue through April as conditions permit. The piles are located in a variety of locations on the east side of the park including west of Deer Mountain, around Eagle Cliff Mountain, along upper Fall River Road, near the Mill Creek Ranger Station off of Bear Lake Road, and west of Beaver Meadows Entrance.

The fuels reduction projects are designed to reduce significant accumulations of forest fuels that can generate extreme or problematic fire behavior adjacent to urban interface. By reducing the potential fire behavior the wildland fire risk to firefighters and the public is significantly reduced. However, these projects are not designed as a standalone defense against wildfires nor are they guaranteed to hold a wildfire in the worst of conditions. Big Thompson Fish Kill Settlement Reached Colorado Parks and Wildlife has accepted a settlement of $207,000 from American Civil Contractors (ACC) for the accidental fishkill on the Big Thompson River this past March. The settlement, which will be spent restoring fish habitat in the lower Big Thompson will help ensure the river and trout fishing will be brought back to its former glory before the 2013 flood.

“Colorado Parks and Wildlife is heartened by the cooperation of ACC, Larimer County, and Central Federal Lands in finding the cause of the fishkill,” said Area Wildlife Manager Larry Rogstad. “While the events leading to the fishkill were unintentional, the outcome was devastating to the rainbow and brown trout fishery in the lower Big Thompson, which prior to the flood was well known among anglers. The fishery is a valuable public resource therefore CPW has been dedicated to verifying what happened, and recovering appropriate compensation for the Big Thompson loss. Everyone involved is pleased that this settlement will go directly back to the canyon, the habitat and ultimately to the fish, right where it should go!”

Although not related in any way, the larger Big Thompson/US Highway 34 project, spearheaded by Colorado Department of Transportation, to rebuild and make permanent repairs to Highway 34 and the adjacent Big Thompson River, has taken note of what happened with the fishkill. The goal of this multiyear project, which started with the recent closure of the highway in the lower canyon, is to rebuild the highway, the river and the canyon in a manner that is ecologically functional, while providing recreational opportunity, and most of all with resilience against future flooding.

Since the 2013 flood, CDOT and its consultants, multiple federal, state and local agencies, and canyon residents have been meeting frequently to design and imple-

ment the canyon recovery plan between Estes Park and Loveland that will be a showcase of engineering and collaboration. As part of the process agencies involved in the Big Thompson project, including CPW, have been working together to establish a set of best management practices to absolutely minimize chance that a similar event occurs again.

Lessons learned from the fishkill have been instrumental in establishing environmental protection on the Big T project.

“The 2013 floods devastated the river habitat which is precisely what ACC was working to mitigate,” stated Randy Maher, ACC President. “Along the North Fork project the team used the natural hydrology of the river to create and restore quality fish structure and repair and enhance 19 acres of riparian habitat so the fish and wildlife will thrive again. We were so excited by what we were creating and were obviously devastated by the loss.”

Restoring the recreational fishery and creating a new road-river interface with long-term resiliency and natural function remains the priority for multiple agencies. According to Rogstad, “river restoration goals in the CDOT project, along with a little help from Mother Nature should bring the fishery back to preflood quality.” Along the way, money from the fishkill settlement will be put right back into the river to improve invertebrate and fish habitat that will benefit trout and other species for years to come. Once the road graders have finished the project CPW will sample and tweak the fishery as needed, and ultimately the Big Thompson will be better than ever for people, for wildlife and most especially for the trout.”

WAPA Selects Agency Preferred Alternative For Estes-Flatiron Rebuild Today Western Area Power Administration announced the selection of an Agency Preferred Alternative for the environmental review of a project to rebuild two transmission lines between the Estes Substation and the Flatiron Substation, west of Loveland, Colorado.

The selected route for the Estes-to-Flatiron Transmission Lines Rebuild Project will consolidate two 60-plus-year-old transmission lines into a single, double circuit power line that will mostly follow the rights-of-way of the existing lines to minimize environmental impacts. In 2017, WAPA anticipates releasing the final environmental impact statement, in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The final EIS will provide an updated analysis of the alternatives and a description of the selected route.

“The existing transmission lines are aging and deteriorating. They need to be replaced to make sure the transmission system continues to deliver power reliably and safely,” said WAPA NEPA Document Manager Mark Wieringa.

After evaluating eight different alternatives in the Draft EIS, WAPA considered public input and further divided each alternative into three separate regions— east, central and west. From this analysis, WAPA selected the best route for each region: East region (closer to Loveland): Alternative B best utilizes existing ROW on the southern line, while avoiding difficult terrain and new ROW associated with

other alternatives.

Central region: A combination of Alternatives B and C would be used, generally locating the alignment closer to Pole Hill Road.

West region (closer to Estes Park): A modified version of Alternative C was se-

WAPA will prepare a record of decision regarding the project no earlier than 30 days after the final EIS has been released to the public.

EPNEWS.COM The obsessive interest in ugly sweaters during the holidays has gotten out of hand.

People are making fun of clothing embellished with bows and bells and furry knitted kittens peeking out of 3D stockings.

They are laughing at Santa’s upside-down feet sticking out of a chimney, angels sweetly singing o’er the fuzzy plain, and an entire Currier & Ives scene embroidered on the front and back of a knitted garment.

They think a sparkly snowflake turtleneck worn with a matching woolen snowman cardigan with little Frostys dancing down each sleeve is nerdy.

I quote my sister Janet: “Nerd is not a dirty word.” Still, because of the reputation theme sweaters have developed over the past few years, I can no longer wear my festive holiday wardrobe without getting dressed down, so to speak, by my friends.

They have my best interest at heart. I know that. They aim to save me from embarrassing myself when I want to wear my green sweater with reindeer flying across my chest, Rudolph leading the way with a real light-up nose. But I like my theme sweaters. They aren’t raggedy since they were only worn those few short weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. And they made all the holiday socializing feel just a little more festive. They are happy. Fun. Merry and bright.

This fashion wasn’t always considered in bad taste. The cheery, cute Christmas sweaters were all the rage in the ’80s and ’90s. Recently I saw a 15-year-old photograph of a group of women at a holiday luncheon. I’d guess 90 percent of them were wearing theme sweaters—sincerely and with all their fashion-minded hearts.

The photo epitomized holly jolly. Nobody was pointing at anybody while covering her mouth to hide a mocking smile. I had Christmas sweater envy just looking at the array of options that used to be available.

I miss those days. I want to wear my festal apparel seriously, not as a joke. And I don’t like seeing fake ugly sweaters on the racks

at department stores, ineffectively making fun of my once-fashionable wardrobe.

If someone’s going to wear an ugly sweater, it must be authentic. Intentional unloveliness, like full-sized tree ornaments hanging from your chest, is not what we wore at the height of the Christmas sweater craze.

Knock off the knock-offs!

Those of the younger generation are beginning to think it looks a lot like Christmas only when they get invited to an ugly sweater party. Making fun of their parents’ holiday attire is as much a part of their annual Christmas custom as listening to Mariah Carey singing “All I Want for Christmas is You.” (Gag me with a spoon.

Give me Perry Como singing “Silent Night,” please.) When the Millennials go to a more traditional holiday party, they wear the same old clothes they wear to any other party, or to the grocery store, or the dentist. Borrr-iiing.

I’ve wondered how far the adorn scorn reaches. Is the necktie with the Grinch and little Cindy Loo Woo on it still acceptable?

How about red, white and green striped socks? Can I wear my theme earrings—the Christmas trees my now-deceased motherin-law gave me (rest her soul) when I first was married? The bells that jingle when I shake my head? Or have these too become geeky?

My dilemma goes beyond Christmas. I want to wear my heart sweater on Valentine’s Day, my bunny vest for Easter and my jack-o’-lantern earrings for Halloween.

Should I wear my floods as well? (For the Gen Y’s, that’s what we called pants that were too short.) The answer is in the figgy pudding: I’m not just a Christmas nerd, I’m a nerd the whole year through.

2017 Christmas Bird Count Set For December 17 Gary Matthews is inviting local residents and visitors to participate as field counters or feeder watchers in the annual Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park Christmas Bird Count (CBC) to be held on Saturday, December 17. This will be the 64th local count and the 117th National Audubon Count. Last year was a record setting count with 1,902 counts in the United States with 59,039 participants. In total 54,531,408 birds were tallied in the United States which included 646 species.

Our CBC is one of over 2,500 international counts organized by the National Audubon Society and we will be joining over 60,000 volunteers across the country who will be counting birds from December 14 to January 5, 2012.

Prior to the turn of the 20th century, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas "Side Hunt."

They would choose sides and go afield with their guns—whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the thennascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition that

would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them. So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Chapman and the enthusiasm of 27 dedicated birders, 25 Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined.

Our Estes Park Count will contribute to this treasured national collection of data.

This data has revealed the dramatic impact drought and climate change is already having on birds such as a disturbing decline in common birds including Northern Bobwhite quail. On the other hand the counts are showing a dramatic increase in Eurasian Collared Doves across the country; we recorded our first one in Estes Park in 2006. We hope our Bald Eagles that seem to have taken up residence at Lake Estes show up on the 17th to be counted.

Unfortunately we have had an exaggerated decline of over 50% in the total

number of birds in Estes Park over the last several years mainly due to the devastation of aquatic and riparian habitat caused by the 2013 flood.

Anyone with basic bird-identification skills is welcome. Teams of field counters will be assigned to blocks in a prescribed circle 15 miles in diameter and spend at least the morning trying to locate, identify, and count every bird. The count circle is bounded by Longs Peak Campground on the south, the Ute Trail crossing on Trail Ridge Road on the west, and Dunraven Glade and Meadowdale on the east.

The participants will meet in the Hondius Room at the library for a preliminary

compilation of the birds seen.

Potential field counters should contact Christmas Bird Count compiler Gary Matthews by Sunday, Dec. 12th to receive a team assignment. Email him at

Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars, a field guide, water and a sack lunch. Both car and hiking routes are available.

Feeder watchers also play an important part in the count. They record each species observed at their feeders on count day and the highest

number of those species seen at any one time. Feeder

Last year, 37 counters and four feeder watchers recorded 52 species and 2,022 birds. In our count circle, the most unusual birds seen last year were a Common Redpoll seen along the Lake Estes Trail and a Northern Mocking Bird spotted along Dunraven Glade.

In past years counters traveled from Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Ft. Collins, Greeley, Longmont and Loveland to help with the count.

Stunning Ranchland In Southern Larimer County Protected

Another portion of historic Elk Park Ranch, a large, intact working ranch in the valley east of Twin Sisters Peaks, is protected forever, through a conservation easement held by the Estes Valley Land Trust.

The land trust closed on the new 35acre conservation easement on November 22nd.

Elk Park Ranch was established in the late 1800s. Since 1998, the land trust has worked with families to protect more than 1,100 acres of the ranch.

“Elk Park Ranch is incredible,” said Jeffrey Boring, the Estes Valley Land Trust’s Executive Director. “As the Estes Valley becomes more populated, it’s going to be more difficult to protect large properties like this ranch. The land trust is extremely grateful to the landowner for ensuring that this beautiful property will remain undeveloped.”

The new conservation easement is adjacent to Roosevelt National Forest and visible from popular recreation destinations such as Rocky Mountain National Park, the summit of Twin Sisters Peaks, the ridgelines surrounding Homestead Meadows, Kenney Mountain and Pierson

Peak. Because Elk Park Ranch remains privately owned, public access is not permitted.

The conservation easement legally binds the landowner, and their successors, from ever developing the property.

Thus, the wildlife habitat and open space values that the public share are forever protected.

“Wildlife such as elk and mule deer, mountain lion and bear cross public and private land in the Estes Valley. It’s critical that we protect their habitat, wherever we can,” said Art French, Estes Valley Land Trust Board President. “The Elk Park Ranch is a haven for wildlife and this new conservation easement helps ensure the animals can thrive.”

The Estes Valley Land Trust holds more than 160 conservation easements that protect nearly 10,000 acres of land.

“The land trust has been around for almost 30 years. We are working hard to protect important views, wildlife habitat and working ranches before they are gone forever,” said Boring. “We’re hoping stories like this will generate interest from other landowners and we can work with them to protect the land they love.”

This Sunday, storyteller-performer Kurtis Kelly will help bring to life the revered holiday story “A Christmas Memory,” a lyrical and popular autobiographical tale by Truman Capote. In the narrative, Capote recalled his childhood memories of Christmases spent in Depression-era Alabama. Kelly has invited fellow storyteller Kerry Aiken to join him for this “readers’ theater” program. Kelly will provide the voice of young Buddy, and Aiken will be the voice of Buddy’s endearing older cousin. It is the tale of two misfits who embark on a season of humorous and charming holiday traditions—frequently alarming their serious-minded family members—not the least of which is a furtive quest for whisky to use in the recipe of their cherished Christmas fruitcake.

Elkins Distilling Company, located at 1825 N. Lake Avenue, will be host to the free presentation this Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 p.m., which is open to the public. The gathering will begin with an opportunity for attendees to share a favorite Estes Park Christmas memory or two.

Following that, Kelly and Aiken will present their reading from Capote’s holi-

Estes Park EDC Receives International Economic Development Council Award

The Estes Park EDC recently received notification of an International Silver Award for Excellence in Economic Development. The award, from the International Economic Development Council in Washington, DC was in recognition of the program entitled “Mountain Strong – Estes Valley Business Retention & Expansion.

Jim Pickering, Estes Park EDC Board Chairman stated that the award is in recognition of the hard work and dedication that Staff and Board Members gave in response to the devastating floods in 2013. The Estes Park EDC worked in cooperation with the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and the Larimer Small Business Development Center to help secure 2.2M dollars in direct grants for Estes Valley area businesses through the Recover Colorado Disaster Relief Fund.

Jon Nicholas, Estes Park EDC President and CEO stated that in addition to direct

financial relief to businesses themselves, the businesses retained 283 full-time and 449 part-time jobs, thereby reinvesting much of that money back into the local economy.

Adam Shake, Estes Park EDC Director of Communications and Business Development stated that this award is a reflection of the Estes Valley community as a whole. It’s not only the hard work of the Estes Park EDC and its Board of Directors that gained the international recognition for this award, but the tireless service and dedication of its community as well.

The award application reflected the successful efforts of others as well, such as the United Way of Larimer County and the community-wide “Mountain Strong” fundraising efforts for Crossroads Ministries. “Our community-wide efforts have earned this recognition,” said Jon Nicholas.

Thanksgiving is over. The dishes are done; the leftovers are stored, and now… what to do with all that turkey? Unless you are very wise, you probably had a lot of turkey sitting in your refrigerator. I cook a 20 to 23 pounder every year. I seem to forget that my family is not as large or rather, not all are in attendance as were in the “old” days. We had eight at our table this year. Marie, Nathan, Lexi, Greg, Cecelia, Gregory and Annette.

Marie and Cecelia brought a lot of the side dishes; we ate until there was no room in our bellies to eat anymore.

Saturday Nathan and Lexi and Marie came over and put up my Christmas tree.

It is a bit early but I never turn down help or a lovely afternoon visit with my daughter and grandchildren. My dog Sunshine was such a big help! She thought that everything that came out of the boxes should be sniffed and hopefully chewed. And miracles of miracles, only two ornaments bit the dust. So far today, Sunday, Sunshine has left the tree alone but the giant stuffed Santa was too much to resist. He now sits atop the mantle with a little less beard.

After our Thanksgiving dinner, I usually boil down the turkey carcass to make soup or gumbo. I really didn’t have that much turkey leftover as the two families divided all the food into equal portions to take home. But, they left me the carcass. For those of you that need a good recipe for that leftover turkey you might be fixing for your Christmas dinner, I have a really tasty one from Saveur magazine with a little touch from me.

Turkey Tetrazzini Ingredients 6-8 servings 6 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1 medium red onion, chopped 1 lb. button mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 green or yellow bell pepper, seeded, stemmed, and chopped 1⁄4 cup flour 1 cup chicken or turkey broth 1 cup milk 2-3 cups diced cooked turkey 1 1⁄2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided 1⁄2 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 Tbsp. sherry (optional) 1 lb. spaghetti 1 cup frozen peas 1 cup frozen carrots Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Instructions Heat oven to 350°. Melt the butter in an 8-qt. saucepan over medium-high. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and the pepper and cook another five minutes.

Add the flour and cook two minutes longer. Pour in the stock and the milk and cook until thick, about five minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the turkey, half the cheddar, the parmesan, and sherry. Stir until the cheese has melted, about eight minutes more.

Meanwhile, bring a generously salted pot of water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring occasionally, until al

dente, about eight minutes. Drain, then add the spaghetti to the pot with the sauce and stir in peas and carrots. Season with salt and pepper and spread evenly into a 9by-13-inch baking dish. Top with remaining cheddar and bake until golden and bubbly, about 35 minutes. Let rest 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Congratulations to Kaelynn Morgan, the Student of the Week for December 9, 2016.

School activities Kaelynn enjoys are volleyball, soccer, choir and singing in the Major 13 group, being President of

the Interact Club, a member of the Young Musician Association (Little Giant Music), NSHSS (National Society of High School Scholars) and receiving a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) leadership nomination.

Outside of school she plays guitar and loves horseback riding, camping, hiking and playing with her dog.

Kaelynn has lettered in volleyball and soccer all four years in high school and is releasing an album on iTunes in January of 2017. (Little Giant).

Her favorite quote is “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever did.”

“Because,” Kaelynn says, “people are more scared to fail than try.”

After high school Kaelynn plans to become a biological engineer at Fort Lewis College and then transfer to Purdue University.

Tibetan Singing Bowls For Healing Offered Monthly At The Senior Center Local Tibetan Reiki Master and Bowl Healer Jeff Grissom will continue to offer free Tibetan Singing Bowl Healing Sessions on the third Friday of each month at the Senior Center. The next session will be Friday, December 16 at 1:00 p.m. Space is limited, so please call or stop by the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street, to sign up.

Jeff Grissom operates a private healing practice in Estes Park using the ancient techniques of Tibetan Bowl Healing and Reiki. According to Grissom, “Sound healing is an effective and proven modality that uses vibrational sound to help reduce stress, alter consciousness, and create a deep sense of peace, wellbeing, and better health. Sound has also

been shown to be a vital part of the healing process for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and side effects, especially for pain relief management.”

Walt Richards celebrated his 102nd birthday this week on December 7th. Walt was born in Cortland, Ohio. He followed in his parents’ footsteps and attended Oberlin College where he met Jeanne, his wife of 60 years.

After college Walt returned to Cortland and worked for the family business. Richards Milling Company was started by his grandfather in 1883. Walt’s father than ran the business followed by Walt for the final years of operation. He then began looking for new career opportunities and heard from a friend that the Methodist Home in Elyria, Ohio was looking for a business manager. He accepted the position and after several years he was encouraged to apply for other positions within the company in New York and Colorado. Walt was offered a job in NY but decided to be patient and wait to hear from Colorado. The decision paid off and they moved to Boulder where Walt became the Executive Director of Frasier Meadows Manor for 13 years. He retired in 1981 and he and Jeanne moved to the home they built in Estes Park.

Walt has been a very active community member over the years at one time serving on the board for the Senior Center.

While in Ohio he joined the local Rotary

Club where his grandfather and father had both been members. He was a Rotarian for 50 years.

He and Jeanne loved to travel and see new things both in the country as well as abroad. He enjoys genealogy. He also has a great interest in music. He learned to play several instruments throughout his lifetime and was in the Glee Club as well as other choir groups.

He now lives at the Good Samaritan Society – Estes Park Village where he goes for a walk every day and takes photographs. They might be of the mountains, the wildlife or even the sights in and around Good Sam. He prints one every day and brings it to the dining room to share with his neighbors. He then sends it via email to around 150 people on his email list.

When asked when he began taking photos he remembers it was when he was 14 years old and he attended the Boy Scout Jamboree in Liverpool, England. He traveled by steamship and also visited Belgium and France. Walt became and Eagle Scout when he was a freshman in college.

When asked what he thinks the secret is to living a long life, he replies, “Choose the right parents.” His father lived to be 103 and his mother 106. Those are good genes.

Senior Center To Host Annual Holiday Feast On December 20

Tickets on sale now Tickets for the Senior Center’s annual Holiday Feast are on sale now at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The event will be held at the Senior Center on Tuesday, December 20.

Light hors d’oeuvres will be available at 11:30 a.m. and the meal will be served at noon. Tickets are $6.50 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $8.50 for non-members. Advance ticket purchase is required for this event as seating is limited. Tickets must be purchased before 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19.

Catering for All Occasions has planned a delicious menu of ham and prime rib with all the trimmings, plus red velvet cake to top it off. Members of Estes Val-

ley Sunrise Rotary will provide table service. This popular event is a great time to meet with friends and celebrate the holidays over a wonderful meal.

New “Ageless Boogie Jazz Dance” Class Offered At Senior Center The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is offering a new dance class series as well as a free demonstration class to learn about the series. On Wednesday, December 14, a free demonstration class will be presented on Ageless Boogie Jazz Dance. This class will give participants an overview of what will be offered in the upcoming six-week Boogie Jazz Dance class series. The December 14 demonstration class will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street.

Please call or stop by the Senior Center to sign up for this free class. The demonstration class is open to everyone, and there is no obligation to attend the class series.

Subsequently, a sixweek Boogie Jazz Dance class series will be held at the Senior Center on Wednesdays, January 11 through February 15, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The cost for the six-week series is $44 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $58 for nonmembers.

There is a minimum of six participants required for the series, and the registration deadline is Wednesday, January 4.

Instructor Laurie Grace Wood has been dancing since she was 7 years old. She grew up watching MGM Movie Musicals

with her mom, who longed to be a tap dancer. Laurie went on to train, perform, and become an entertainment dancer and choreographer for more than 18 years, working for Disney/ MGM Studios, SeaWorld, community theatres, universities, pageants, and corporations.

She also completed degrees in Modern Dance and Business Administration at the University of South Florida.

Laurie describes dance as a full body workout that improves memory, coordination, balance, strength, rhythm, selfexpression, and creativity. In this six-week class she will teach the basics of jazz, Broadway, musical theatre, and lyrical styles which are set to different genres of music from different decades. The class will also include movement warm-up, across the floor, learning a choreographed dance, and stretching. No experience is required. Laurie says, “If you can walk, you can dance. The most important part is that we dance for fun, we laugh, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

You could complete that phrase many ways: ‘get to stores to get the best bargains, after all ‘black Friday’ has passed’…‘start putting together our yearly family letter’…‘get our list ready about whom we will invite to Christmas dinner’…‘what games we will watch in the football championships’…and on-and-on the list goes.

One reason all-too-often overlooked, is why it all started in the long ago: ‘Jesus Christ’.

Celebration of this season did not start with ‘marketing’, ‘family gatherings’, or ‘football championships’. It began as people realized they had been given such blessings in the ‘present’, the ‘Gift’ of God’s Son. Since that time, the coming of the ‘Gift’ has been celebrated by millions, despite the fact that we do not know exactly when He was born. I hope you, like I do, rejoice when ‘Christ is preached’ at any time of the year…and He is, every December. I’m sure He rejoices as people honor Him. At the same time, I imagine the disappointment when shopping, football, gatherings, supplant the thoughts of Him. A favorite author, Studdart Kennedy, depicted such feelings in these words: “When Jesus came to Golgotha, they nailed Him to a tree. They drove great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary. They crowned Him with a crown of thorns. Red were the wounds and deep, for those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap. When Jesus came to our town, we simply passed Him by. We didn’t hurt a hair of him, we only let Him die, for times have grown more gentle now, we wouldn’t give Him pain. We simply passed on by and left Him in the rain. Still Jesus cried, ‘Forgive them for they know not what they do.’ And still it rained the winter rain that drenched Him through and through. But we went on by and left Him there, without a soul to see. And Jesus leaned against the wall, and longed for Calvary.” They say that the opposite of ‘love’ is not ‘hate’, but ‘apathy’. To think that a person could treat God’s ‘Gift’ to man with apathy is hard to fathom. He was so great. Not only because of eternal blessings He offers, but because of the powerful way He impacts all of civilization.

Excerpts from Dr. James Allan Francis help us capture His importance in these words.

“He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman…He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. For three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book or held an office. He never had a family or went to college, never visited a big city. He did none of the things that usually accompany greatness. When He was thirty the tide of public opinion turned against Him. His friends ran away. One denied Him. Turned over to His enemies, He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves…When He was dead He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today He is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, or navies that ever sailed, or parliaments that ever sat, or kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that one solitary life.”

So, what’s your focus during this season: ‘apathy’ or ‘love’? Like most churches we invite you to study ‘Him’ during these next few Sundays. Our theme: “Why did my Savior come to earth?” Wonderful celebrations this month, as ‘Christ is preached’.

Friday Niters Welcome 2017 With Annual Dinner Dance You are invited to join the Friday Niters Dance Club for their annual New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance at the Rodeway Inn. Social time begins at 7:00 p.m. with a delicious buffet dinner featuring roasted prime rib and ranch baked chicken served at 7:30. “Christmas Around The World” This Saturday, Dec. 10 Two of Estes Park’s community choirs, the Estes Park Chorale and the Mountain Men Chorus are joining forces to produce a delightful holiday show, “Christmas Around the World” this Saturday, December 10th at 7 p.m. at Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies. The program will feature a combined group of nearly 40 singers, performing a sampling of music from different countries and traditions as well as a healthy dose of American Christmas music, both traditional and contemporary.

The Mountain Men, led by director Kasey Troutman, will perform a haunting acappella arrangement of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen as well as traditional American spirituals and other holiday fare for men’s choir. Holiday spirituals include “Rise Up Shepherds,” “Go Tell it,” and “Good News.”

The Chorale will perform selections representing music from five continents, including a new twist on the Ukrainian carol “Carol of the Bells”, French carols “Pat-aPan” and “Angels We Have Heard on High,” a “Jamaican Carol,” and an acappella arrangement of “Of the Father’s Love Begotten,” an ancient plainchant melody, among others. Both choirs will join forces for the rousing Nigerian carol “Betelehemu” – watch for their intertwined melody and lyrics and rhythmic

choreography! The program will conclude with a special original American Christmas song “Night of Silence” combined with the traditional of the German carol “Silent Night.” The Chorale is under the direction of newly appointed Denise Stookesberry, who will debut as only the fourth director of the 45-year-

John Denver Christmas Party At Lonigan’s Lonigan’s of Estes Park Presents the John Denver Christmas Party Friday, December 23rd, 2016. This event is a benefit dinner and concert to help rebuild the Glen Haven Town Hall.

Musical performance by Glen Haven’s own Steve Erickson, three time “National Singing Championship” finalist. Sound provided by Lonigan’s and Erickson Pro audio, with sound engineer Ward Durrett.

Happy hour begins at 5:30, specials include $5.00 appetizers, $1.00 off all beers and well drinks and $4.00 margaritas.

Dinner begins at 6:30 with Lonigan’s buffet which includes chicken marsala, beef pot roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, assorted vegetables, salad, dinner roll and peach cobbler.

That Time Of Year “The sun that brief December day Rose cheerless over hills of gray And, darkly circled, gave at noon A sadder light than waning moon.” John Greenleaf Whittier, “Snowbound” Mid-December inflicts false promises as pale depleted sunlight bestows Judas kisses of wintry warmth and raw chill seeps from hardened ground to tighten and shrivel gloved fingers. Intrusive wind, biting cold, sere iron earth, attenuated action and diminished energy collude to sap our strength. The subtle solstice is twelve days away, and like a 300-yard oil tanker drifting six miles after “full stop,” the calendar will turn toward summer long before winter realizes days are lengthening.

How do we know that what we know is real? For two decades I taught “Allegory of the Cave” to Eagle Rock students as one exercise in critical thinking. Plato’s cave dwellers (think voters with whom you disagree) find truth in flickering shadows of images on a wall. Understanding “reality” is painful and difficult for them, and they easily reject “new” ideas. When others try to convince them different worlds exist they refuse to listen, taking comfort in opinions unencumbered by inquiry. We might ask ourselves: In what “caves” do we dwell unaware?

Eagle Rock teacher Mohammed Elgazzar persistently asked students to explain the difference between right and wrong as it related to ethical codes. Students also knew the admonition, “You have no right to no opinion.” And ERS staff employed another question in the service of critical thinking: Do we focus on the cultivation of virtue or the eradication of evil? Adolescent minds grow through struggle with hard questions.

Immediately after the election someone spray-painted the word “Trump” on the outside wall of an apartment complex on Manford Avenue. It defaces our town as a visible symbol of smug boorishness, prejudice, fear, and a lack of critical thinking.

It lingers on that wall like a festering wound, raising dark questions: What was

he or she (or they) thinking? What prompted them to spray paint on a building where many people of color live?

Who bought the spray paint? Why was the deed done at night? What was the “message?” What conversations occurred in the vehicle driving to and away from this (I’ll be polite) insensitive act? How do the perpetrators feel today? Vindicated? Superior? Correct? Ashamed?

Embarrassed? Do they boast to friends?

Do they plan another occurrence? Do they know the difference between right and wrong? Can they think critically about their behavior and opinions?

I have a dog in this fight, and not just because I oppose racist acts and defacing property. I have tutored Latino EPHS students who live in that housing complex; they are friends. I have driven students from Vietnam, Thailand, China and Japan to Fort Collins to obtain social security cards so they could work in local businesses; these students lived in the complex on Manford. My great-grandfather was an Irish immigrant; “No Irish Need Apply” signs greeted him as he sought work in the Land of the Free. Were your ancestors among the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free?” We all have a dog in the fight to uphold decency.

After the spray-painting incident, Superintendent of Schools Sheldon Rosenkrance immediately published an open letter to the larger Estes community urging all to embrace inclusivity and understanding, displaying the kind of leadership that builds, rather than erodes, community. Since the election the Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked close to 1000 incidents of “verbal harassment, the use of slurs and derogatory language, and disturbing incidents involving swastikas, Nazi salutes and Confederate flags” in schools across the country.

“Send these, the homeless, tempesttossed, to me?” Somewhere Emma Lazarus is weeping.

In late September I addressed 800 high school students and urged them to think critically about their lives. Here is some of what I spoke: “What are you doing for others, honoring your sisters and your brothers and your fathers and your mothers? Do you lead with love or hold on to hate? Do your values fit like gloves or chafe and aggravate? Do you find a need and fill it or waste integrity and spill it? Will you travel the earth, discover its worth, give your soul a new birth? Will the world know your name because of well-earned fame or ignominious blame?

Will you fight global warming and typhoons that are swarming, affirm that black lives matter, reject racist chatter, nourish conservation with elation, fight white privilege and racial discrimination, contest bullying and victimization, use education not for exploitation, intimidation, alienation or prevarication but instead as a foundation for mobilization to foil structural segregation, stop nuclear proliferation, cease senseless deportation, eliminate starvation, smash glass ceilings and achieve pay equalization, reverse unequal wealth accumulation, curtail deforestation, embrace LGBTQ orientation, advance self-determination and build altruistic human association? There’s no

time to delay, your place is in the fray.

Who leads your learning? What are you yearning, churning, burning to know?

Do you race toward graduation using imaginative creation and discipline internalization to sing your declaration for liberation? Will you live your one life to the limit? Will you move from intolerance to inclusion, refuse delusion and confusion? Making life choices is your destination, but virtue is not hereditary, nor is your struggle discretionary. When your visualization embraces independent cogitation and imaginative creation, when you meet and master internal confrontation through perspiration, tribulation, dedication and activation, when your moral compass merits commendation and thoughtful propagation, when you inform your discretion and champion trenchant questions, you may generate sufficient transformation to secure your—perhaps our nation’s—unification and full emancipation.” I invite the individuals who defaced Manford and shamed Estes to respond.

The play's primary cast is composed of four women, three men, and three chil-

dren (one girl and two boys aged 10-16 years) A secondary cast of dreamers and chorus members requires four to five men and four to five women.

While the primary cast carries the bulk of the show, the secondary cast supports throughout with wonderfully enchanting choruses and apparitions. For those who have always wanted to experience being on stage and who have good voices, the chorus and dreamer roles are the perfect theatrical opportunity. Cast members outside the Estes Valley receive a stipend for travel expenses.

Candidates are asked to prepare a 1-2 minute solo piece for The Secret Garden audition. An accompanist will be provided. Candidates may also be asked to read from the script.

Music of the season will deck the halls of the Stanley Hotel with the exquisite sounds of Elise Campbell on flute, and Deborah Hui on piano. A senior at the University of Colorado Boulder, Ms. Campbell is delighted to study with world-renowned flutist, Christina Jennings. In addition to her performance degree, Ms. Campbell is pursuing a Minor in Business and will also be receiving an Entrepreneurship Certificate from the College of Music.

Heart Of Expression Art Event & Benefit Sale

On a cold December evening last year, a gust of wind launched from Tyndall Glacier and was whipping its’ way through Estes Park. But inside the warm glow of Snowy Peaks Winery, friends were enjoying each others company while attending an evening art and photography show.

The show was being hosted as a collaborative event, a “Popup,” by Patti Glasgow of Enlightening the Living Heart, LLC, and Dave Rusk of Rocky Mountain Day Hikes. That show was a great success for the two of them. “Everyone had a great time and loved the idea of an art show ‘popping up’ for an evening.” Patti originally heard about the idea for a popup from Peter Gaustad at an Estes Arts District meeting being held at the Estes Valley Library.

On that chilly December night, in the warmth of Snowy Peaks, a seed of an idea sprouted. “We wanted to continue putting on shows, but also wanted to do something different, something that would serve a higher purpose,” Patti says.

“We wanted it to be beneficial, a giving and receiving for everyone involved—the artists, the restaurant/spirit-maker, the people attending and buying art, and finally to benefit a local nonprofit.” And so began Heart of Expression: Art Event & Benefit Sale.

Now, a year later, Heart of Expression is celebrating it’s fourth official event on the evening of Friday, December 16th at Elkins Distilling Co, from 5-8 p.m. Food will be available by preordering from

When the idea began to grow after the initial event, everyone wondered what it would be called. Ideas were literally tabled and pushed around. “We decided to let everyone participate one evening at the Rock Inn.” Patti printed a bunch of possible words, cut the words up and spread them out on a dining table. Glasgow teasingly called them ‘Patti words.’

Throughout the evening, people would put together word sequences for possible names and Patti wrote them all down, but nothing quite fit. It wasn’t until the next morning that Greg came up with the name from the very same ‘Patti words,’ Heart of Expression. That was it.

People attending a Heart of Expression event find they have a really fun evening talking with the artist, perhaps meeting new people in the community, seeing beautiful art work they might not have seen before, and feeling good about the purchases they make, because they are supporting the artists and businesses while also supporting local nonprofits through their purchases. Heart of Expression donates 20% of all art sales to a chosen nonprofit. The previous three shows have donated a total of $900 and raised $4,499 in artist sales.

For the artists, it not only gives them an opportunity to show and sell their work, but it also serves as a motivation to keep making art. Patti adds, “We provide an affordable platform for artists. Rather than jurying work, we value being inclusive of anyone who would like to participate. We give anyone at any age and level of experience an opportunity to participate. We also value diversity and equality; all participating artists being considered equally welcome and artistically valid.”

People attending the event can see the wonderfully diverse forms of expression artists and makers are doing in this community. At the event in October, three ballerinas with Ballet Renaissance danced at varies times during the event.

The June event included live music performance from Great Blue. Also in October, Erin Dahlby & Nadine performed their original songs for the event.

The benefit for the restaurant/spirit maker is to have new people coming into their business, purchasing food and drinks, and coming back in the future and telling others about the restaurant or spirit maker. The restaurants and spirit makers have also participated in the donation, by donating a percentage of sales.

EVRPD Fall Sports And Events Youth Sports Little Hoopsters Basketball (3 & 4 year olds) Little Hoopsters is a developmental basketball program for 3 & 4 year olds.

100% parent/guardian participation is required. It is Saturday mornings only, for six weeks from 2/11/17-3/18/17. It is from 9-9:45 a.m. and will be at the Middle School Gym. Registration is from 12/12/16-1/23/17. The cost is $25/InDistrict and $30/Out-of-District.

Junior Jammers Basketball (K-1st Grade) Junior Jammers is an instructional basketball program for K-1st grade. This year we are teaming up with the Denver Junior Nuggets program! Practices begin the week of February 7, 2017. Games are Saturday mornings from 2/11/17-3/18/17. Coaches/Referees Wanted The EVRPD is in need of qualified referees and volunteer coaches for Youth Basketball. Available practice times are based off of gym availability, but are primarily in the evening starting at 5:30 p.m. for one hour a day/twice a week. Each year, the Estes Valley Recreation & Park District distributes up to $2,000 worth of youth sports scholarships for local children to play recreation sports. The 38th Annual Frost Giant 5K & 10K Run helps raise

money to give kids an opportunity to play sports in our community! This year our goal is to raise enough money for 50 scholarships! The Frost Giant race will be Sunday, January 29, 2017. The 5K is at 11a.m. The 10K is at 12 p.m. Run one race or both! Costumes highly encouraged! The race starts at the Estes Park Municipal Building. Male and Female Divisions are: 0-14, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & up. There are awards for the overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners. Estes Park Thanksgiving Community Gathering A Huge Success!

From There to Here, From Then to Now: A True Story By: Tony Schetzsle

For 16 years, every Thanksgiving, citizens in the Estes Valley gather to share a table, conversation, and a meal, a Thanksgiving meal. People come for reasons known only to themselves but leave having shared with their newfound Thanksgiving Day family a common sense of gratefulness. They shared a moment of thanks. And that moment is witnessed by all who make this event possible. It comes at no costs to any and all who partake, there and here, then and now. This gathering has a history.

As the story goes, on an unusually cold day in November, 17 years ago, Larraine Darling and Steve Misch were comparing plans for the coming Thanksgiving holiday. Both would be with their immediate families.

There would be no out-of-towners, relatives, extended family or others to join them. Larraine reasoned that most likely there would be others in the community who would also be alone. That notion troubled Larraine and she was disturbed, but in a very good way.

At the time, Larraine owned and operated Notchtop in Stanley Village. Larraine, egged on by Steve, conspired that they have a venue, can get whatever tra-

ditional food is needed, have the means to prepare it and most certainly have the desire to host and share a communal Thanksgiving holiday. With commitment, determination and a spirit of giving, the first Thanksgiving Community Gathering (TCG) would and did take place at the Notchtop in 2001. With the aid of volunteers, some of whom are still active today, 42 attendees were welcomed and served in the true meaning of the holiday.

The first TCG was such a joy for all who participated that Larraine and Steve decided to repeat the meal in 2002 and again in 2003 at Notchtop. Just as the at-

tendance grew to 156 community members, so too did the number of volunteers who made it possible. Likewise, the generosity of Valley residents resulted in more donations of goods, services, food, time and cash.

In 2004, TCG was moved to The Hangar restaurant at the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course. Along with the move came a change in the demographics of the attendees. Citizens from every sector of the community as well as some out-oftowners shared the tables. Even better, TCG began delivering meals to the home-bound and others who simply could not make it to The Hangar. All told, 23 meals were delivered and 151 attendees passed through the buffet line supported by nine roasted turkeys.

As they say (or not), the fifth time’s a charm. In 2005, Mountain View Bible Fellowship was impressed and motivated to offer their gymnasium and kitchen for the next TCG. Alleluia!! With added space came added opportunity. It was going to be a new look TCG with a traditional meal complemented by entertainment, face painting for children, and more. But most importantly, our community guests were greeted, seated, and served by community volunteers. And

that year, there were 255 guests, 82 volunteers, and 33 meals delivered supported by ten very large roasted turkeys.

Nothing breeds success like success. During the next decade, attendance grew to 728 last year, meals delivered increased to 130 and 36 turkeys were roasted in support. Entertainment over the years included Cowboy Brad Fitch, Ray Young, Steve the Balloon Artist, Steve Misch as Master of Ceremonies and Larraine Darling as Master of the Kitchen. The ‘Homemade Only’ baked goods table was established, a Mayoral Proclamation issued and a feature article on TCG in the newspaper insert American Profile. TCG has grown to a full size event from an incubated idea that embodies the spirit of ‘Community serving Community’. TCG is a gathering of thankful folks hosted by other grateful folks.

It should be noted that the tradition of TCG in the Estes Valley began over 100 years ago. The community with the likes of Enos Mills and others would gather at the ‘Ol Comers’ building at the corner of Elkhorn and Moraine. Not unlike today, they would feast and celebrate as a community. And the old shall be made new again.

On this occasion of the 16th annual Thanksgiving Community Gathering, it is open to all members of the Estes Valley, friends, family and visitors. And it is still free! And it is free because so many contribute so much. You might consider donating a homemade goodie to the baked goods table. Many cash donations are offered for these tasty delicacies. You might consider making a ‘tax deductible’ donation to TCG (Yep, TCG is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit charitable organization) by mailing your contribution to TCG, P.O. Box 4122, Estes Park, CO 80517. TCG will be happy to issue a receipt for your purposes.

TCG only exists and continues because so many want it to exist and continue.

And they do this through their time, efforts, cash donations and contributions of goods and services. In the very least, give us your smile and we’ll give you ours.

Final Thoughts On The Loop To The Editor: The decision to move forward with the Loop has been made. There are no winners or losers just differences of opinion.

The Town Board did their elected jobs and voted their conscience for what they all felt was in the best interest of our community. Could we really ask for more? Mayor Jirsa and Trustee Walker held true to their platforms they ran on, Trustee Koenig articulated her position on both votes, Trustees Holcomb, Norris and Nelson reaffirmed their previous positions and Trustee Martchink voted for what he felt the future of Estes Park needed.

We must respect these men and women

for their service and dedication after all we voted them into office and tasked them with this work. Lingering threats, hard felt feeling and even public displays of positions need to be put in the past so we can focus on our future.

There is much work to do in our coming years that our energies and passions can help influence. Our child care, housing, high speed Internet and flood mitigation. All of these impact us substantially whether we are retired, have a second home, work, live, or visit here.

Our community needs to continue to move forward and manage its future.

More Loop Thoughts To The Editor: It is our feeling that sometime soon, Rocky Mountain National Park will begin to restrict access which might negate the purpose of the loop. If the loop has been started, it will be impossible to replace the Donut Haus, one-fourth of Baldwin Park and the destroyed homes.

One other option might be to encourage Park visitors to return to town from Deer Ridge Junction via Highway 34 and Wonderview Ave. A parking garage on the west side of town might call attention to West Moraine businesses.

PPLC Memorial Lights Christmas Tree

The holiday season is upon us and the PPLC Memorial Christmas tree will again grace the lawn at Prospect Park Living Center. The memorial lights tree was a tradition that ended several years ago. The staff of Prospect Park Living Center wanted to bring back the tradition of the memorial lights which burn in memory of loves ones and friends.

Monies raised will be used towards items that will enhance the lives of the residents.

The memorial lights tree will become a visible symbol of the true meaning of Christmas at Prospect Park Living Center. The holidays are always a special time for everyone. Some people look forward to happy meetings with friends and family, some look forward to the holiday shopping, children anticipate the magic and mystery, and everyone looks forward to the gifts they will receive. But for some, the holidays are a time for us to look back on the loved ones we’ve lostloved ones who used to be part of our holiday celebrations. What better way to honor the memory of a loved one than to purchase a light that will glow in their honor?

Donations may be made in memory of deceased loved ones or friends and patrons may purchase as many bulbs as they wish. Each bulb is $10. A list of donors will be published in the local newspapers. Checks should be made payable to Estes Park Medical Center Foundation with a note designating “Memorial Lights Tree.” Please indicate the name or names of the individuals being honored. Donations may be mailed to Estes Park Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 3650, Estes Park, CO, or dropped off at the nurse station at Prospect Park Living Center.

Deane Dukes Deane Dukes passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016. Deane was born in Old Fort, Ohio, on April 15th, 1919 to Lloyd and Mary Dukes. She attended college, majoring in music (piano and organ) and administrative office work. Her love of the mountains and nature brought her to Colorado.

She moved to Estes Park in 1954 for an administrative assistant position with the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain National Park. During her 25 year career she was with the Resource Management and Visitor Protection Division, as well as the Division of Interpretation. She retired in 1979 after a 25 year career with the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain National Park. During her tenure she was with the Resource Management and Visitor Protection Division, as well as the Division of Interpretation. After retiring she became interested in water aerobatics and began a water exercise class at the Aquatics Center that continues today. She was a volunteer for many years with both the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop and the Community Thrift Shop. Deane was an avid hiker

and skier. She was intensely interested in nature photography in all its aspects. She was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, Noble Dukes, and a sister, Donna Dukes.

A memorial service will be held Sunday December 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Good Samaritan Village 1902 Ptarmigan Trail. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice is appreciated. See www.allnutt.com to send a message to Deane’s family.
