In reimagining a historic estate for the modern era, Rob Mills Architecture drew inspiration from the past whilst looking squarely toward the future. The result is Carrical House, an evocative design that balances the integrity of the original building with a bold visual language. The home retains much of the original architecture, utilising raw materials and elegant 1930’s details to create a heritage feel throughout. In highlighting these historic features, the design also pays homage to each space, curating an identity for each different room and its function. From the integration of modern technology in the kitchen to the elegant wood panelling that hides additional storage in the games room, each space has been considered for functionality and aesthetic appeal. The use of a striking blue palette throughout the home brings an assured modernity to each space, bringing it into the present with an elegant, timeless atmosphere. This signature blue is balanced by warm cream hues and timber and travertine floors, as well as a carefully curated selection of artworks, rugs and ornaments that add personality to each corner. Alongside retaining the standout features from the existing house, Rob Mills and his team were also commissioned to reimagine the home as a contemporary living space for the modern family. In doing so, they removed obsolete features such as an unused garage to increase living space, creating a new living area with plate glass doors open to the garden. And whilst careful attention has been paid to preserving the heritage of the building, there’s a sense of ease throughout the rooms, as soft textures, abounding natural light and design features create a welcoming atmosphere to each corner. With a proud, classic exterior and unexpected interior, Carrical House elegantly walks the fine line between refined and unexpected, functional yet beautiful. It’s a space to admire and a place to come home to.
