BE FREE FROM BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA AT LAST

SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN? TRIED MANUAL TREATMENTS? IDD THERAPY IS FOR YOU. IDD Therapy is the targeted disc treatment for sufferers of back pain, neck pain and related symptoms such as sciatica. In clinics nationwide, this non-invasive option helps to bridge the gap between ‘hands-on’ treatments and surgery. What is IDD Therapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a non-invasive, targeted disc treatment for unresolved back pain, neck pain and associated symptoms such as arm pain and leg pain (sciatica). Available through a network of spinal disc specialists across the UK, IDD Therapy delivers a precise and more consistent treatment than is possible with the hands alone or with traditional mechanical methods like traction.

What does the programme involve? You will be fully assessed before undergoing treatment; this includes a review of a recent MRI or suitable scan.

How does IDD Therapy work? IDD Therapy uses gentle pulling forces to distract (draw apart) specific spinal segments where discs are damaged or bulging, removing pressure and irritation from targeted discs and any trapped nerves. Patients have a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions which allows their body to adapt to treatment whilst progressively relieving pain and improving movement.

Treatment is gentle and safe. Sessions begin with some Thermedic heat therapy on the area to be treated, warming up the muscles and ligaments. You will remain fully clothed throughout treatment and be fitted with a soft, ergonomic harness for comfort and support. The machine tilts upright, allowing you to step on from the standing position without pain or difficulty. Once you are comfortably harnessed, computer-controlled pulling forces are gently applied at

In the past, slipped disc patients often had to consider invasive options if manual treatments couldn’t get them better. Now with IDD Therapy, these patients have a very good chance of becoming pain-free

You will feel totally relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. Afterwards, some cold therapy is applied to minimise any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses - essential for long-term pain relief. Who can benefit from IDD Therapy? Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain, neck pain or sciatica for some time and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise. Reasons to choose IDD Therapy • Your current treatment is not working • You want to stop taking painkillers • You are seeking long-term pain relief • You want to return to normal activities If you have unresolved back pain or neck pain and need help, call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or visit: www.AtkinsPhysio.com

YOUNG CARERS LIGHT UP REDBRIDGE WITH LANTERN SCULPTURES

From 27th -29th July award-winning arts charity Create worked with young carers in Redbridge to design and construct a series of ambitious lantern-inspired sculptures. Thanks to funding from The Queen’s Trust, the young carers shone their light on the theme of “identity,” incorporating elements of their personality and dayto-day lives into their unique collection of sculptures. The workshops began with the young carers sharing their personal definitions of “identity” and design ideas with the group. They then collaborated to sketch their plans, drawing up designs that represented each of the young carers’ identities. Under the expert guidance of Create’s professional artist Sheridan Quigley, they experimented with willow rods and other natural materials, bending and shaping them to create the structure of their lanterns before customising them in accordance with their designs. Officers praised for putting armed robbers behind bars.

F

our Essex Police officers have been praised for their leadership, dedication to duty and professionalism while carrying out an operation that led to an organised crime gang being jailed for a total of 33 years. The officers, including Sgt Laura Heggie and Sgt Phillip Smith, were commended for their role in the operation at a special awards ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters. Working alongside colleagues from the Metropolitan Police, the operation revealed how Patrick Claydon, Tommy Aitken and Sandra Clarke conspired and planned to commit armed robberies across the county by targeting cash in transit vehicles. After months of meticulous surveillance work and intelligence

gathering into their activities, the gang was foiled as they attempted to rob a security van with a pump action shotgun in November 2013. Tommy Aitken, dressed in a balaclava and gloves, was approaching the security van when armed officers pounced on him. His accomplice, Patrick Claydon attempted to flee the scene but was chased down and apprehended. Sandra Clarke was found nearby waiting in a getaway car. All the members of the gang were arrested and their weapons seized without any harm to the officers or members of the public. 49-year-old Patrick Claydon, of

Ongar Road in Brentwood, was sentenced to fourteen and a half years imprisonment for conspiracy to rob. 38-year-old Tommy Aitken, of Braithwaite Avenue in Romford, was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment for conspiracy to rob. 45-year-old Sandra Clarke, of Eastwood Road North in Leigh-onsea, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for conspiracy to rob. Claydon and Aitken also pleaded guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to commit and indictable offence and possession of a prohibited weapon. Clarke additionally pleaded guilty to possession of class A drugs.

DEER THE

OF EPPING FOREST The City of London Corporation tell us all about the magnificent creatures which inhabit our local forest.

E

pping Forest has held a long association with deer. In times when the pleasures of the chase were the favourite recreation of the Sovereign, Epping Forest became a much favoured royal hunting ground. As part of the Royal Forest of Essex it was controlled by Forest Courts which meted out harsh penalties to those caught poaching or even just disturbing the deer. A number of deer parks were formed in and around the Forest. Copped Hall, Monkhams and Fairmead date from the 13th century. The hunt grandstand of Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge still stands today at Chingford. The Lodge was commissioned by Henry VIII as a grandstand from which to view the hunt. Queen Elizabeth I is thought to have visited the Lodge.

16

ESSEX CENTRAL

The tales of poaching and annual Easter Hunts of tame deer bedecked in ribbons continued for may hundreds of years. The notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, was known for dealing in poached Forest venison which was sold on the black market as ‘Black Mutton’. The City of London became the Conservators of Epping Forest in 1878 and deer are the only wild animals to be specifically mentioned in the Epping Forest Act. The gradual loss of interest by the Crown for hunting in the Forest eventually led Queen Victoria to relinquish all Royal hunting rights in 1882. Most fallow deer in Britain are descended from animals introduced by the Normans but it is possible that Epping Forest’s herd is descended from an importation in Stuart times.

“The Deer Sanctuar y was established to the south-west of Theydon Bois in 1959 to retain specimens of the darkcoloured deer. ”

Although the fallow exhibits a wide variation in coat colour, ranging from white through to black, the uniform dark colour of these animals is unusual. With the growth of car ownership during the 1950s, the Conservators became concerned about the increasing numbers of deer killed on the roads throughout the Forest and the Deer Sanctuary was established to the south-west of Theydon Bois in 1959 to retain specimens of the dark-coloured deer which have long been associated with Epping Forest. Public access is not permitted but good views can be obtained from the nearby public footpath and the adjoining Forest. Occasionally guided visits to the Sanctuary are organised by Forest Keepers. Male fallow deer are traditionally known as bucks. Each year a new set of antlers are grown, the older buck casting their antlers in April, the younger ones usually later in May. The new sets of antlers start to grow almost immediately and are usually fully grown by August. Female fallow, known as does, do not grow antlers. Fawns are born each summer from mid-May into June. It is quite normal for young fawns to be left alone by their mothers for long periods, the fawns lying hidden in the grass. In late autumn, the does come

into season. The bucks move into rutting ‘stands’ where they make muddy wallows by scraping the ground and urinating onto it. They then roll in their wallows to gain the distinctive and powerful odour of a rutting buck in its prime, which, together with their loud belching groans, serve to attract does and overawe younger males. Challenges for the rutting stands are met in a battle of clashing antlers. Today, the Forest’s deer delight visitors who are thrilled to catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures. The main threat to deer now comes not so much from poaching, but from fast busy roads and human disturbance. When walking in Epping Forest please be mindful to minimise disturbance to the deer and always ensure dogs are under effective control. Deer walks, talks and educational activities are regularly organised, for further information, please visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/ eppingforest or follow @COLEppingForest on Twitter. You can find out more about this unique, ancient woodland at Epping Forest’s Visitor Centre, The View, Rangers Road, Chingford, which is conveniently located next door to Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge.

Putting together an outfit for the school run can be a challenge but you don’t have to wear the latest Gucci dress and Christian Louboutin heels to be considered ‘stylish.’ A quick, practical and stylish outfit all rolled into one is the perfect combination for mums on-thego; distressed jeans, leather jackets, maxi dresses – think more Jessica Alba than Gwen Stefani. The summer holidays will soon be over, so with that being said, here are a few head-start outfits to give you inspiration for what you could wear when you’re next on the school run.

IDD

THERAPY Could IDD Therapy be the answer to your unresolved back or neck problem?

IDD

Therapy is a revolutionary nonsurgical spinal treatment that was introduced to the UK from America 5 years ago. The treatment is suitable for people with back and neck problems due to damaged discs in the spine. There are currently around 20 centres around the country that offer this new technology. The MRI scan shown here shows the lower back of a typical patient who is suitable for IDD Therapy. The patient had been suffering with constant pain and spasms in their back accompanied more recently by numbness in his left leg (due to a herniated L45 disc). Previous physiotherapy had not helped and the patient was considering surgery. However after hearing about the successes of IDD Therapy they contacted Spine Plus Clinics as their nearest provider. After a six week treatment programme the patient achieved full resolution of their symptoms and no longer required a surgical opinion. IDD Therapy uses advanced computer technology to precisely target, then gently and rhythmically

distract specific segments of the spine. This creates a vacuum effect which over a 6 to 8 week course of treatment can help decompress damaged discs and reduce disc bulging, thereby reducing pressure on pinched nerves and improving mobility and alignment of stiff ligaments and spinal joints. “Since using this ground breaking treatment over the last 4 years we have been able to help many more patients than we previously could with manual therapy alone”, says Robert Shanks, Director of Spine Plus Clinics.

IDD THERAPY & TRADITIONAL TRACTION?

Medical trials show traction to be effective for around only 50% of patients which has led to it going out of favour in recent years. Trials with IDD however show 70 - 90% success rate. IDD has a number of features which address some of the failings of traditional traction. Firstly, the use of precise pulling angles and secure harnessing allows individual segments of the spine to be precisely targeted. Secondly, the machine applies

distraction at a varying speed during each cycle of low tension to high tension. This is known as a “sinusoidal” form of distraction which is much less likely to cause counterproductive muscle spasm in the spinal muscles (as can occur with the traditional linear traction.) Finally IDD features a patented oscillatory form of distraction producing a pumping effect on the intervertebral discs much like using a plunger on a blocked drain. Spine Plus currently have five clinics in the London area including Chigwell, Woodford, Bow, Waterloo and Harley Street. They offer specialist treatment services for Back Pain, Neck Pain (and all other musculoskeletal disorders),including the latest therapies such as IDD Therapy and Shock Wave Therapy. To book an appointment visit their Chigwell or Woodford clinic, or call 0203 369 0937. For more information visit: www.spineplus.co.uk

OFFICE MAKE YOUR

WORK HARD AT HOME With many of us now working or studying from home, it’s important

N

to create a stylish, fully functional space that complements your method of thinking and your home’s interior style.

ot everyone has the luxury of an entire room to dedicate to their work, so reinventing unused room corners is a great way to make the best use of your available space. Follow our simple tips on how to create a home office that works for all of the family:

landing space that can be reinvented with a purpose. Your home office must work within your interior scheme too - you don’t want to put office furniture in an awkward setting but be sure to reserve your other rooms for relaxation, keeping work and social time separate.

SELECT A SPACE:

Picking the right furniture is a key to creating an office space that works and looks great in your home. The amount of space that you’re able to dedicate to your workspace will have an impact on the type of furniture that you are able to introduce. A good desk is a great place to start and a small wooden design such as the Campton Bureau or Arena Corner Desk at Fishpools with concealed storage options are a great choice, helping to banish any unwanted clutter on display. Modern desks with sleek tapered legs and a glass top are also good at keeping

Look for an area in your home that encourages creativity but is also quiet enough to avoid any distractions from busy family households. Your chosen space should also allow you to get the most out of your working day and distance you from domestic life, while a room with a view is a wonderful way to get you inspired. If your options are limited, then be sure to consider spaces that you could utilise better such as cluttered cupboards, cubby holes or even vacant hallway and

a space streamlined and tidy, so perfect when space is at minimum. Have your study books to hand and personal belongings on display ready to inspire by introducing stylish, slim line shelving like the Mammoth S Storage Unit at Fishpools. A statement chair that is strikingly cool yet comfortable enough to sit at from 9 to 5 is also a must. Don’t be afraid to combine furniture that is normally associated with a different room too, such as bedroom or kitchen for an eclectic look.

USE THE WALL SPACE:

Wall space can be a great asset especially if it’s somewhere communal like a hallway alcove. Pick playful and inspiring prints like Fishpools’ ‘My Dachshund’ artwork or brightly coloured magazine snippets and samples to make your mark and breed creativity. Pin a notice board up to keep track of those

When working from home it’s important to have great task lighting as well as alternative solutions to help to set a relaxed ambiance during heavy workload pressures. Small chrome desk lights offer a retro feel whilst also being incredibly practical. Add interest by choosing lighting with interesting design details, such as the Luther Desk Lamp at Fishpools with a faceted crystal glass shade. If desk lights don’t work for you, tall and thin floor lamps or wall lights will also be an ideal partner. FISHPOOLS 115 High Street, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, EN8 7AL. WILDLIFE WATCH

GARDENING

on Victoria Roberts

Q

Badgers are stocky, with short legs and silverygrey fur. They have very distinctive black and white markings on their faces. They can sometimes be seen at night wandering through the garden, foraging for food and also in woods and on grassland. They live in family groups in a series of underground chambers, called setts, which are often used by successive generations.

WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON

A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.

uite often during the month of September there is generally more rainfall. The soil is still warm making it a perfect time to divide up some of your perennials. By dividing them up and replanting them now they will have the whole of the autumn for their root systems to begin developing. Look around in your garden for the perennials that have become too big and overcrowded, these are the plants to divide. This will help reinvigorate them and encourage better flowering next year.

DIVIDING PERENNIALS

_ Start by digging up clumps and using a spade cut the roots in half or in quarters if the plant is quite big.

_ Improve the soil before replanting by adding some well-rotted manure or compost which will help to feed the plant until next year. _ Water them in well and continue to do so for the next few weeks.

of colourful flowers to be enjoyed like dahlias, chrysanthemums and asters. Keep deadheading them to encourage them to flower for as long as possible. Plant up some hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs

Dividing up perennials

Deadheading Dahlias

_ Don’t forget to leave some of your perennials with their seed heads still on to provide food for birds. This will also help to add some interest in the garden over winter especially on frosty days when they will stand out with some sparkle and shine. There are still plenty

indoors in pots ready for forcing. They will grow into lovely colourful blooms just in time for Christmas and will make perfect presents. By Victoria Robertson, amenity horticulturalist and committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society

PESTS AND DISEASE

Cabbages, cauliflower and other brassicas are prime targets for the cabbage root fly. As the plants grow slowly they begin to wilt and die as their roots are eaten by the fly larvae. Plants can be protected by growing them under the cover of horticultural fleece. Or you can place a brassica collar around the base of the stem. The collar prevents the female fly placing eggs on the soil surface close to a plant. Eggs deposited on the collar often dry up and fail to hatch.

COMMUNITY

REDWI N GS HORSE SANCTUARY

R

The UK’s largest horse sanctuary

edwings Horse Sanctuary believes that every horse, pony, donkey and mule has the right to a happy and healthy life, free of fear and neglect, and provides daily care to more than 1,500 rescued residents - the majority of whom are unlikely to be rehomed. The charity therefore ensures that every horse - no matter how complex their needs - has the opportunity to live out their days in a loving and safe environment.

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

For those that are able to have a fulfilling life outside the Sanctuary, Redwings also provides a rehoming programme. Redwings currently has approximately 500 horses living out in ‘guardian’ homes, and the charity’s commitment to lifelong care extends to its rehomed horses and ponies as each and every resident under the Guardianship Scheme will have a place at the Sanctuary should they need to return.

SUPPORT REDWINGS!

Last year, Redwings pledged homes to over 150 rescued equines from their largest ever rescue operation. Although the Sanctuary was at its full capacity, the charity managed to secure the future of these survivors, many of whom were mares in foal meaning there are many more mouths to feed in 2015. As a 100% publicly funded charity, every donation - no matter how big or small - helps Redwings help horses in need. Here’s how you can get involved:

VISIT REDWINGS

Redwings has four visitor centres all of which are free to visit. Redwings Ada Cole in Nazeing, Essex, is home to over 70 horses and donkeys, where visitors can see how their kind donations can make a real difference. Visitors can enjoy horse care demonstrations and guided tours where you can get up

close and cuddly with the friendly residents, including the charity’s smallest pony Teeny Tucker!

SPONSOR A RESIDENT

Redwings’ Adoption Club is a fun way to support the charity by sponsoring one of its residents and making a new friend at the same time! A year’s adoption of a Redwings horse or donkey costs just £12.50, which goes directly towards their care. Adopters receive a certificate, plus twice yearly updates and photographs from their new friend, not forgetting an invitation to their adopted horse or donkey’s birthday party. You can also visit them for free whenever you like at our visitor centres. Redwings Ada Cole is home to five Adoption Stars: rock ‘n’ roll pony Elvis; adorable Shetland pony Tinkerbell; donkey Del Boy; magnificent Gelderlander Zippy; and pretty pony Dolly.

DONATE YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS

Don’t throw away your unwanted items, donate them to Redwings! The Sanctuary always welcomes rugs, tack and other horsey items to help care for its residents, but they also welcome donations of just about anything as this can be sold via their eBay shop!

LEAVE A LEGACY

Gifts in wills make up the largest proportion of Redwings’ income and the charity simply wouldn’t be able to function without them. Remembering Redwings in your will is a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy that will help them to help horses and donkeys for generations to come. HIGH STREET Use it or lose it!

H

changes in consumer buying patterns and the introduction of large, American style malls our British High Streets face a constant threat. This month we hear from Becky Elliott, owner of Loughton’s Bababoom and Chairman of Loughton High Road Town Centre Partnership to get to the nitty gritty of all things retail. I have been a shop owner for over 5 years now and if I knew just what was involved I may well have spent a tad longer thinking about whether it was a good plan. British retailers really do have their work cut out now, with high rents and massive business rates, for many breaking even is a good week, and gone are the days when they actually made a good living from their businesses. Yet, your local shops, especially Independents contribute hugely to your local economy. Year on year our Business rates increase yet did you know this doesn’t even cover getting our bins collected, we have to pay separate companies another fee on top of this? Did you also know that the type of shops on your local High Street has a direct correlation to your own homes value, not to mention the employment and the support given to the community with offering your teenagers work

experience and the almost daily contribution of raffle prizes for school fetes and charity events. The internet has had such an impact on the way people shop, lots of people shop around for the cheapest price possible without a thought for returns and after sales care yet most of your local shops will offer amazing customer service, will care about you and the product you receive and will usually go above and beyond to help resolve any after sales issue you have. For us personally one of the products we sell are prams so we have ensured that our staff can do on sight repairs for most issues so that the customer is never without, or if their pram does need to be sent off then ensure a high quality loan pram is given and a speedy return of their own pram. This is in stark contrast with many larger chains who take up to 5 weeks to address even small issues. Parking is often an issue that many customers complain about yet even if they had to park at the furthest parking space in town from the shops it is still a closer walk to the shops than most of the parking spaces at our nearest retail park and definitely heaps cheaper.

I know that many will feel that going to large retail parks will save them time as they will have a larger selection of stores to choose from and while time is precious to everyone, taking the time to shop local, be creative in what you are buying, speaking to Independents about ordering in specific products for you will make such a difference. Our local book shop has a 24 hour service so I give them a call with the book I want and if they don’t have it in stock I can pop down the following day and collect it. So I ask you before you next hop on the tube or jump in the car to think about your local shops and what they do for your community and show them your support by shopping local. DAD’S DIARY

In Partnership with

ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP T

he imminent arrival of bouncing baby boy number two is very much in our minds this month, the official due date was August 17th, and I’m currently writing this two days AFTER. I remember the first one going overdue, by nine days, and I’m hoping we’re not in for the same scenario as there’s only so many times we can rub mum’s belly and say ‘any minute now!’ But deep down I’ve a horrible feeling that glaciers would arrive quicker, which means we’re all in for some long hard nights of pain…. mainly for me. I say that because I’m tasked with: foot massages, back massages, midnight trips downstairs to get water and Paracetamol, and constant chores around the house. I’m sure there’s mothers reading this thinking, “You’ve got it easy compared to what we have to go through!” but it’s no fun having your fingers constantly smelling of stale cheese…I really wish she would learn to wash her feet. Of course, all of this is a joke (even the feet part) she’s doing a great job whilst me and the little lad are waiting eagerly for a new son/brother. This month our eldest was treated to a trip to the beach with his nursery, in the run up to the big day out we got him very excited with talk of sand castles and digging so we were eager to hear how much he’d enjoyed his day when we picked him up. “He slept all day,” said his teacher, “He did what?” I couldn’t believe it! All week he’d been eager to dig holes and play with the sand then I guess the overwhelming rush of excitement had simply exhausted him. The next day however they went back, which obviously made

60

ESSEX CENTRAL

for a completely new experience for him. “How was he this time?” I asked, and thankfully I was informed he had loved it. The main problem we find when taking him on a big day out is the journey itself inevitably sends him crashing to sleep. As we pull into the: zoo/theme park/beach/grandparents, we can already hear him snoring like Santa Claus on Boxing Day. We took him to the zoo recently and as we tried to wake him from his slumber we were greeted with a stream of moaning, wailing, a fair bit of snot and a strong desire to curl up in his car seat, “Come on boy, we’re here! Time to see the animals!”, but we got nothing.

“It’s no fun having your fingers constantly smelling of stale cheese” Eventually after carrying him around for a few hours he starts to come to, just as we’re about to leave and we have to traipse our weary legs around once more whilst getting a strong sense of ‘deja zoo’ (awful pun, please excuse me). He’s certainly a kid who likes a cat nap, although when he wakes in the morning he is very focused about getting his daily ritual underway, it starts at 6:50am, on the dot, a knocking on his door with a repetitive request of, “Daddy, wake up… Daddy, wake up!” which acts as my alarm clock coming through the monitor. I get to his door and open it to find him holding his dog under one arm (stuffed, not real) and clutching

his bottle in his hand, “Morning Daddy... Simpsons?”, “No, I’ve told you, Simpsons is not on in the mornings,” (every day we do this, and every day he asks with a hint of extra curiosity in his voice, as though this might just be the day). So, from this greeting stance we then go back into ‘Mum and Dad’s room’ where he lays down alongside and requests, “Daddy, can I have an orange pleeeease?!” he then sits up, eats half the orange and spies the banana, “Daddy, can I have banana pleeease?” He then grabs the peeled banana and squeezes two thirds through the fingers of his clenched fist, looking like some kind of Play-doh machine, and proceeds to eat the banana by partially consuming his entire fist. Just to make sure he doesn’t miss any he then proceeds to hit the back of his fist with his other hand in order to tap it in further, and eat any remaining pieces that could have fallen down to his wrist. Once he’s finished tickling his stomach he removes his hand and asks to go downstairs for cereal. Within seconds he is off the bed and I’ve barely got one slipper on as he turns open the door handle at the bottom of the stairs, “Just wait a minute,” I yell, as I hear the door slam shut behind him. I make it down to see he’s pulled the cereal from the cupboard and the plastic inner bag from its box, scattering Cheerios across the floor and get to him just in time as he’s about to drop the milk into the cat bowl. This breakfast ritual will no doubt be amended once the second boy arrives and I just hope I have enough oranges and bananas to keep them both satisfied. ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS

SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUBS IN ESSEX By Ben Sneath

ey class

bb Waltham A

C

hingford Karate Club, started 30 years ago and has expanded to include 15 other clubs in East London and the Essex area. Clubs in Waltham Abbey, Harlow, Enfield, Wanstead, Woodford, Walthamstow and other areas have joined the Chingford Club, and the group is now known as Shotokan Karate England. This explosion of interest in karate is due to Pre-grading people of all ages realising that karate is a course discipline that helps concentration and coordination and is also fun to learn. The Chingford Karate Club was actually ground-breaking because 30 years ago in 1985, it was the first karate club to open in Waltham Forest. The founder, Rod Butler, had to persuade the local council that karate was in fact a disciplined martial art rather than an aggressive sport. Opinion of karate has happily changed and there are now karate clubs throughout London and Essex and children can even study karate as a GCSE subject at school. Fundraising Shotokan Karate England has a wide Karate Marat hon range of ages and a great family atmosphere in its clubs. Many of the children are introduced to karate by parents, but Rod got into karate years ago after watching his son in a class, he even met his wife at Chingford Karate Club! After more than 40 years of karate experience Rod is now the chief instructor maintaining a high standard in all of the SKE clubs. SKE also organise karate

62

ESSEX CENTRAL

demonstrations in schools as a way of introducing children to karate. Classes are open to students from the age of six and all abilities are welcomed. There is also a free introductory class for anyone interested in starting a structured programme of learning defence against punches, kicks and grabs. As members become more experienced, they are encouraged to attempt gradings, rising through the colour belt ranks, from white to black. Every three months there are grading courses where members can demonstrate their new skills and attempt the next belt exam. There are also regular inter-club competitions, and an annual National Championships. SKE has had members representing Great Britain in the World Karate Championships in Japan, and Chingford member Tim Ahmet won the Great Britain Under-21 Championships as an active junior member. The clubs also use karate to help various charities. This year 200 members performed a Karate Marathon to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Appeal and a sum of £22,000 raised by the event will shortly be presented. During 30 years the clubs have raised more than £100,000 for various charities. Future plans include international exchange visits with clubs from abroad where visiting clubs train here and SKE Clubs travel abroad to a host club. The next exchange trip will be to a club in Belgium. Shotokan Karate England Tel: 01992 768 664 www.shotokan-karate-england.co.uk
