appy Easter to you all! What a jam packed issue the April magazine is! I made the hot cross bun bread and butter pudding at the weekend and it was lovely, will definitely make it again. My husband is a big fan of Vinnie Jones and thought the interview was great. We are hoping to book tickets for the event you advertised, which also coincides with my husband’s birthday, looks like it is going to be a great evening. Kelly T.

A short roundup of what’s been going on

BUILDING WORK UNDERWAY AT THOMAS WILLINGALE SCHOOL Work is underway to provide additional facilities for children at Thomas Willingale School, Loughton. The project - which will provide two extra rooms and a medical room - involves the infilling of a piece of wasteland between the reception classrooms and the KS1 corridor which is currently not being used. Headteacher Teresa Phillips said: “We are undergoing the building work this term towards an exciting outcome that involves the provision of extra space to support the children’s learning and medical needs. “Primary schools are always struggling to find spaces within school to teach the children in smaller groups, sometimes they have staff available but no actual room to deliver much-

needed small group support which is a proven method of raising children’s confidence and attainment.” The school has appointed chartered surveyors Munday and Cramer to manage the project with Forum Contracts Ltd completing the work. Work started in the Easter holidays and is due to be completed for a grand opening in September. Miss Phillips said: “We are all looking forward to seeing the impact the extra space will have on our children. Our reception children are being given the chance to see the build as it progresses and their teachers have cleverly used the opportunity to create their own ‘builders yard’ in their outside play area. “The children love wearing the hard hats and helping to ‘build the school!”

GOLD FOR WEST HATCH HIGH SCHOOL GYMNAST

An 11-year-old student at West Hatch High School has won a gold medal in gymnastics while representing the UK in an international competition. Larni Shulton was up against gymnasts from Malta, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Jersey when she competed in the DHA International competition in Colchester. The Chigwell youngster came third overall with high scores in her vault, bars and floor routines - and earned herself a gold medal with her beam routine. Larni, who is in Year 7 at the High Road school, started in the sport at the age of just four and took part in her first competition about three years later. She now trains 18 hours a week, spread over five days, at Havering Gymnastics. Larni initially took part in ballet but then turned her attention to gymnastics. She said: “Being with my friends is one of the best things as well as being able to do a lot of cool skills. “I like the strengthening side (of the sport) which is strange because a lot of people don’t like that.” Of her latest success, Larni said: “I knew I had done well; I’d had a solid competition - it was just really amazing to win. I didn’t expect it.”

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR MAGICAL MONKEY FUN

Charlie the Chimp is 1 year old, Magical Monkey Fun© is celebrating its birthday and lots of exciting prospects are on the horizon! This children’s group centres around music, instruments and puppets and is aimed at children aged 6 months to 4 years. It is unique in that it caters for all of those ages in mixed groups. This means that more than one sibling can come along and join in the fun and all age ranges can enjoy the group together but develop individually and at their own rate. They have had an exciting first year where they have seen the group grow to three highly successful Essex locations; Epping, North Weald and Ongar. The class has been shaped around the Early Years Learning Stage criteria and the needs of the children with rhyming, coordination, listening and involvement being central to the development, enjoyment and fun had by all. In the next year, Magical Monkey Fun will be getting ready for franchise. The nursery rhymes and key songs will be being recorded using the highest quality session musicians and a large variety of styles and instruments so that the children are exposed to a wide range of stimuli within the music itself. Dani Epstein said, “We are very excited at these developments and look forward to more expansion and growth in a magical second year so that children all over the country can become Magical Monkeys and join in the Monkey Fun!” Tel: 07804624652 www.magicalmonkeyfun.com

“If you’re getting married this year, now’s the time to go for a braided hairstyle”

THE KEY TO A PERFECT DIY PLAIT

Margot Robbie

BRIDAL

BRAIDS

Rochelle Humes

A thing of the past or this season’s chicest hairstyle?

I

f you thought braids were going anywhere, think again. Plaits are one of this season’s chicest ways to work an updo and are perfect for a boho, simple or totally glam bride. Whether you go for an intricate braid or sleek fishtail plait, there are loads of unique celebrity styles going around at the minute. One of the latest braided celeb looks comes from Margot Robbie. The blonde starlet hit the red carpet and showed off a very delicate braided do. If you’re getting married this year, now’s the time to go for a braided hairstyle and these Hollywood styles will give you all kinds of inspiration. If you are a bride that just wants to keep your hair out of your face then these plait styles are ideal. French and Fishtail plaits

are a real red carpet favourite for glamorous celebs right now. Whatever your face shape and style, there will be one to suit you. If your hair is short, or very fine, and you’d like a big statement plait adding some temporary clip-in hair extensions (available at Finesse Chingford) will give you the length you need, just ask your hairstylist to weave them in to your plait to create volume and length just for that one special day. By Amanda Anastasiou, owner of Finesse Hair & Beauty in Chingford. If you would like to book in for a bridal hair trial please visit www.finessesalon.co.uk Amanda Anastasiou or call 020 8529 2601.

No matter what plait style you’re going for, wash your hair and, while drying, add a styling product designed to boost volume and ‘stickiness’, such as a volumising mousse. If your hair is very silky, it will be difficult to work with, which means the plaits are likely to slip out. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money we do a fab mousse at Finesse by L’Oreal. Blow-dry your hair until there are no traces of moisture at all - turn your head upside down and use your fingers to work in a bit more volume. Warning: you will look scary at this stage, but it’s all part of the master plan. You are now ready to start creating your plait style. Start off simple and have a look in magazines for inspiration, although it’s probably best left to the professionals if it is for your wedding day!

The hotel has had a recent upgrade to an exclusive retreat with just 69 luxurious Suites. Each of them overlooks tropical gardens on to the Indian Ocean. If you are a foodie the hotel has a reputation, so you are in for a treat whichever of the three restaurants you choose. Le Bar Plage is one of Abbotts’ choices for lunch with its fabulous setting under a shady Badamier tree.

There’s over 5km of beach to explore and together with its sister hotel, Paradis Hotel & Golf Club, you’ll have a choice of eight restaurants. The hotel also offers a couples massage on the beach followed by a healthy breakfast. For the sporty there’s golf, tennis, water skiing, paddle boarding, sailing, kite surfing, diving, fishing and more on offer.

TAKI N G THE PLUNGE

S

Swim instructor, Jez Godlonton explains why swimming could be the sport for you.

wimming is excellent for many health and fitness goals from competing in local and national swimming and triathlon events to using as a warm down after a cardio or resistance workout. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and toning and cardiovascular fitness. The health benefits of swimming can be continued for a lifetime, although not everyone has the ability to be able to swim naturally and feel comfortable within the water. If you were fortunate enough to be taught from a very early age, you probably will find that getting into a pool and going for a swim is not such a big deal. However, if you lack confidence while swimming, then taking lessons at any age will help you learn techniques so swimming can be no different than going for a run or bike ride. When I first started many years ago I could barely swim a length and had fears of deep water. After training with a swim coach I soon learnt to relax and find rhythm in my stroke and now have no issues with jumping in a freezing cold lake for a 4km open water swim. There are 4 main strokes in swimming: Front crawl, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly. If your goal is to just swim lengths at an easy pace or as part of a

“The health benefits of swimming can be continued for a lifetime”

warm down then breaststroke would be a preferable stroke. But if you would like to enhance and push your cardio fitness and build good endurance using swimming then front crawl would be the most beneficial stroke for this exercise. Losing weight swimming is also possible but will depend what level you can swim at. If you can swim 1 mile in 30 minutes then you can burn up to 900 calories if you swim nonstop for 1 hour. However not everyone can swim at that pace so for those people another form of gym or outdoor exercise would be suited if you’re on a weight loss programme. Also as you are supported in the water the whole time, then swimming does not offer great bone density benefits, but that’s about the only thing that’s missing from swimming. With my experience over the years I have witnessed many different types of swimmers. From young children just cruising up and down in the pool like it’s just a game of football, to some of the fittest people in the gym that get in the pool and just about manage one length without being totally out of breath. So if you’re not a natural swimmer you have to bear in mind that swimming is not like running or getting on a bike, its about 70 to 90% technique with a bit of fitness thrown in for good measure. RELAX TIME TO

Could the creation of a ‘spathroom’ be the answer to all your relaxation prayers? The bathroom experts at Aromabath have the answer.

“Durable, yet stylish products, means that your bathroom will last for years to come.”

HOME GARDEN

HOUSE TO HOME

They say that the bricks make a house, however the bathroom makes it a home. The bathroom is the only room in the house where you are able to escape from reality for a short time, and truly relax. As the house economy continues to grow, it is clear that the bathroom has over-taken the bedroom, as the most important space in your home. How will you make the change to make it a place where you can sit back, and relax after a long day at work?

BATHROOM RENOVATIONS

When conducting research from consumers of the home industry, it appears that instead of moving house, many are now renovating their rooms, and the bathroom is one of the biggest changes. But what changes can you possibly make to a bathroom? Surely you only need a shower, basin and toilet? As long as it does the job it is supposed to, does it matter what it looks like? The answer to all these questions is YES, and Aromabath are here to help you make the changes that mean you have a sanctuary to relax and unwind in, not just a bathroom.

PERFECT DESIGN

As a renowned design and supply company, we not only ‘deliver the goods’, we create the perfect haven for our clients. Designing the perfect bathroom space, has become just as important as creating a family environment in the home. From choosing elegant fixtures, to using space effectively, we help our clients create a work of art. Our team have the knowledge, experience and design flair to make sure our clients can see their bathroom before we

&

have even installed it. Using state of the art design software, we are able to work closely and ensure our clients are happy with what they are about to purchase and install; creating the vision needed for their space of tranquillity.

THE SPATHROOM

The latest trend to hit the bath world, is the creation of a ‘spathroom’; quite obviously creating a combination of a spa space and a bathroom. Many of us like to unwind after a day at work or spending time with the kids, and the only time we get to do this is in the bathroom! This creation helps us to design a sanctuary of wellbeing and not just simply a place where we run in for twenty minutes as a place to wash.

QUALITY BRANDS

Buying a bath has become the same as buying a pair of the latest Jimmy Choo’s. Aromabath keeps up to date with the latest brands in bath ware, including the exclusive Bisazza tiles. These tiles are the most sought after product; in the past Bisazza have teamed up with reputable companies such as Swarovski, making them an even more popular choice in the bathroom! Other quality brands such as Duravit, Crosswater, Vola, and the exclusive Japanese company Toto, are but a few of the leaders in the bathroom industry, held under the Aromabath umbrella. Durable, yet stylish products, means that your bathroom will last for years to come, and your time of relaxation will not be short-lived. GARDENING

H

&

WILDLIFE WATCH

Damselflies are small, delicate-looking insects. They can be seen near garden ponds. When at rest, most species hold their wings closed along their body. All four wings are the same size and shape. Adults reduce the numbers of nuisance insects such as flies, mosquitoes and biting midges.

WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON

A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.

appy gardening month of May! The summertime is now quickly approaching and the herbaceous borders will begin to come to life this month. You will notice now that the soil is warming up the weeds will begin growing rapidly too. Keep removing the weeds as you see them grow! Vegetables can now be planted outside into their final growing positions. Sow some more of your favourite seeds directly into the soil too such as Sweet William, spinach and radish. There still might be some late frost so keep the fleece to hand to cover them all up if necessary.

SOFTWOOD CUTTINGS

Now is the perfect time to take softwood cuttings

to propagate. Lavender, lemon balm, rosemary, scented geraniums and many shrubs and trees will also root easily.

1. Take softwood cuttings from the new growth. 2. The best time to do this is early in the morning. Cut a 4 inch cutting from the stem of the plant at a 45-degree angle, about 1/2 inch below a node, where a leaf emerges from the stem. Remove any flowers or buds as well as leaves from the lower part of the stem. 3. Dip into a root medium

and place the cuttings in prepared containers. You can put several into one pot, leaving the top part with leaves exposed. 4. Place pots in a warm, semi-shady to semi-bright location and cover with a clear plastic bag or dome. 5. Keep moist but don’t over-water. Be sure to open the bag or cover for an hour every day to provide ventilation. 6. When cuttings send out new leaves and roots have formed remove the bag or cover and repot each plant in its own pot filled with potting soil. Allow the new plant to put on some growth before transplanting to the garden. By amenity horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society Victoria Robertson

PESTS AND DISEASE

Cutworms are dull brown caterpillars ranging in length from 1 to 2 inches when fully grown. They curl into a C-shape when disturbed. Normally they are found on or just below the soil surface or on lower parts of plants and are commonly active at night. Hand-picking them off at night with a torch is very effective. Clip and dispose of infested foliage and blossoms.

FOOD & DRINK ORIGIN

Head Chef Champ

H

ead chef Champ hails from a Thai background, arriving in England 16 years ago where he honed his craft working for 12 years with the Orchid Group. He originally got his passion for cooking from his mother spending his youth in Thailand watching and helping her cook for family and friends after picking fresh ingredients all from his local area then going home and getting creative in the kitchen. Due to the amount of fresh ingredients used and his homely upbringing Champ has a very healthy and fresh outlook on what he cooks and simply believes everyone should be able to have access to great food conveniently whenever they choose. After working for two very large companies for a number of years he has recently taken on the position of Head Chef at Origin Restaurant at the Railway Tavern in Woodford and now enjoys providing fresh, quality food for the local community. Champ said, “It’s simple, we like to provide good healthy food that excites the palate, not just here but delivered to your doorstep too.”

MAKING A

DIFFERENCE On the beat with Louise Coveney

ou may recognise Louise Coveney from her patrols in the local area - the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) is a regular sight on the beat across the Epping Forest district. Louise has been part of Essex police for the last eight years. During this time she has built some excellent working relationships with local groups, schools and businesses. Her knowledge of the area and local people is invaluable and other officers regularly call upon her to assist in the identification of suspects. She explains “It’s great being out and about, talking to people. It’s very much like the East End of London around here. Some of the residents have been living here for 60 years or more, everyone looks out for each other.” As well as being the eyes and ears of neighbourhood policing, Louise has made a real difference to the lives of people in crisis, including elderly victims of fraud and

58

ESSEX CENTRAL

someone at the point of taking their own life. She also has a great rapport with the area’s young people, working with key partner agencies to deliver Crucial Crew events. Crucial Crew is aimed at year 6 children and several schools from Epping Forest and Brentwood visit a venue over a 2 week period to find out safety and wellbeing information in preparation for secondary school. “I think it’s important to engage with children from a young age” Louise said. “The kids I met eight years ago are grown up now and when I’m out patrolling the area they’ll come running up to me and have a chat. It’s rewarding seeing young people who were caught in a vicious cycle of crime turning their lives around.” “I am very proud to be a PCSO”, Louise said. “I’m always happy to meet people and chat about their issues and concerns. Knowing that I can make a difference to people’s lives makes my job really worthwhile.”

BREAST PARENTING

IS BEST

Breastfeeding again finds itself in the national news with a recent study of over 3,500 showing a definite link between breastfeeding and a higher IQ. The research study over 30 years took into account an abundance of factors that could have influenced the findings although they didn’t look at the parents IQ which seems an obvious one to have included. So what are the benefits? We ask Bababoom’s Midwife and breastfeeding advocate to give us the low-down.

B

reastfeeding can be the most wonderful experience for a new mum, bonding with the baby and the convenience but this is all presuming that your new little bundle takes to it like a duck to water. For others the experience can be the absolute opposite and whilst I am a keen advocate for breastfeeding I am a very firm believer that the baby needs a happy mum more. Education and support is most definitely the key to successful breastfeeding as there is only about 1% of women that physically can’t feed, the rest don’t succeed either because they weren’t given the education and support in the early days or they were being pushed into doing something they really didn’t want to. So who is right, should we make new mums who are already tired and hormonal feel pressured in to breastfeeding? The obvious answer is of course no but somewhere between making sure the parents have all of the information they need to make an informed choice and relaying all the Public Health guidelines the well meaning care provider can very easily be seen as a nag. The evidence shows that if you were breastfed you are more likely to breast feed, perhaps because this is the norm for you. It also shows that if your partner was breastfed you are more likely to be supported and successfully breastfeed. The facts: We know that breastfeeding your baby will help build his or her immune system, protecting against gastroenteritis, ear infections, chest infections and may protect against eczema, asthma and diabetes. For mums it can protect against pre menopausal breast cancer, ovarian cancer and post menopausal hip fractures plus it burns around 500 calories a day which may help shift some of that pregnancy weight. Still with knowing this, breastfeeding may not be right for a mum for a variety of reasons and she should never be judged in that coffee shop as she gets her baby a bottle out, remember there are a small percentage of women who physically cannot feed their babies. For those that can and want to then a standalone breast feeding workshop during pregnancy will give you all the information, including tips and pitfalls so that you have a realistic expectation of what’s to come. Good support at home from family and friends, you feed and nurture your baby and let them feed and nurture you. Finally locate where your closest breastfeeding support is should you need it once the baby is here. Bababoom, 255 High Road, Loughton, IG10 1AD. Tel: 020 3174 0418, www.bababoom.co.uk

DAD’S DIARY

In Partnership with

ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP W

e’ve had highs and lows this month, catching chickenpox for a second time (worse than the first) and having a great day for his 2nd birthday. But I’m going to start by mentioning his growing collection of animals... stuffed teddy bear animals. His bedroom is starting to resemble a poorly underfunded wing of London Zoo, and I keep thinking I should enter with some stuffed bananas and nuts just to appease the imposing creatures. He loves taking them everywhere with him, down the road, in the car and on the trampoline. The last one is proving tricky, trying to watch the poor lad jump whilst holding so many animals, frantically picking them up as he flies through the air and dropping them with each bounce. He looks like he’s trying to rescue a bunch of animals from falling off the ark. So far only one has been named, a small dog he calls ‘Nino’, personally I call him ‘17 quid’, it’s not quite as catchy, but it’s difficult to forget the financial hit I took when trying to ‘hook a duck’ at the local funfair, (who should have dropped the ‘f’ off ‘funfair’) and for which ‘Nino’ was the prize. The fair, aside from that stall, was actually a good laugh, we both watched as he flung himself down huge inflatable slides and across blow-up houses. His mum and I must have looked like quite an odd couple, her face contorted with fear, barely able to peek through the gap as her hands covered her face in terror, whilst I smiled and cheered, punching the air, yelling, “Higher, faster! Keep going! That’s brilliant!!” The next morning I took him to nursery as usual (although I could

64

ESSEX CENTRAL

barely see his face beneath the animals in the back seat) but got a call that afternoon saying he had some spots and it looked like chickenpox. Now, like most people, I was under the impression that you only got chickenpox once, this is not the case. Indeed, the nursery (and subsequently other parents and doctors) have informed me that kids can certainly get it twice. Over the next 7-10 days the poor boy got absolutely covered head to toe in the spots which messed up his sleep pattern (waking up scratching) and also gave us a little concern about another scenario that has happened in

“Her face contorted with fear, barely able to peek through th e s nd ha gap as her covered her face.”

our household... we’re expecting a second baby boy!! This is great news of course, but the danger of having a boy in the house with chickenpox alongside a pregnant woman was something that concerned us. Thankfully beyond 22 weeks this is something that “should be fine” said the doctor. We are trying to explain to him that another baby will be arriving soon (August) and he has taken to kissing his mum’s belly when we speak of him, bodes well so far but I’m unsure how many animals he will share when the new lad turns up. Back to the here and now. The lad had chickenpox and we had to cheer him up, thankfully

he still enjoyed bouncing on his trampoline, although not quite as agile as before, and the ‘seat drops’ were proving to be an uncomfortable manoeuvre, but at least he was happy. The succession of calamine cream and Piriton also helped and before long he was back to his old self and back at nursery, just in time for his 2nd birthday. On the way in he caught a glimpse of his cake, which resulted in a 20 minute consecutive burst of wanting to share his cake with his favourite member of staff (Charlotte, who he calls ‘Shar’) the yells off “Cake Shar, cake Shar, cake Shar” in the end became one word “cashar” by the time we arrived. When I picked him up at the end of the day the cake was demolished and everyone seemed quite pleased, so I guess he managed to share it!? We also went round to see the grandparents for his birthday and took a stroll to Ray Lodge Park, going on all the swings, slides and various play areas, through tunnels and over climbing frames. We then got to the rope bridge, his auntie followed behind him for support but he quickly realised that jumping up and down meant the wooden slats would shake furiously and the rope would be tricky for his auntie to hold. He began to bounce like he was saving the animals on his trampoline and laughed loud as the other kids looked on. I can only hope his younger brother doesn’t share the same adrenaline rushes otherwise it’s going to be a very crazy household... but that’s probably what I’m expecting if I’m honest! ...TO BE CONTINUED

WOODFORD

BOWLING CLUB

F

By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham

ounded in 1923, Woodford Bowling Club has maintained a familiar presence in Kings Avenue for over ninety years. Built by Monkhams Development Limited, WBC holds a prominent position in the Essex bowls community having provided a number of County Presidents over the years. It is also one of only a few private bowls clubs in the area. The club is run by a team of hardworking members, who not only maintain the green and surrounds in perfect working order but also organise a vibrant social calendar including casino nights, wine tastings, cabaret nights and quizzes. Woodford Bowling Club’s enviable facilities are headed by its clubhouse, which is supported by a well-stocked bar. The adjoining full professional kitchen enables members and their guests to be catered for at social events. This all sits well with club president Phil Cole, who is a firm believer in the social side of the game. In addition to competing in several local competitions, WBC also enters players in tournaments that span the county. Held each Saturday afternoon during the outdoor season - April to October - players take part in the ‘weekend drive’ in which teams are chosen based on ability, with players competing in teams of four, the winning team collecting a bottle of wine each, donated weekly by a

different member of the club. Men’s league matches are played throughout the week, on both afternoons and evenings, competing in a number of local leagues. WBC is by no means a men-only environment. There is also a thriving women’s section, making up a third of the membership. Ladies compete in their own leagues and competitions. Several of the senior WBC members raise money for charity through Dennyside, a charitable bowls organisation. As this year’s president is a Woodford member the selected beneficiaries include the Chigwell Riding Trust and Haven House. To swell its coffers, the club hires out its facilities for pilates, yoga and ballroom dancing classes during the week as well as being available for hire for private functions. WBC also supports the Woodford Green Amenity Group, which is allowed to use club facilities free of charge. WBC is always delighted to welcome new members, either experienced or new to the game. Following on from April’s successful Open Day, they will be holding a ‘Learn to Bowl’ course on Tuesday mornings through May for those new to the game. Those who have never played before can count on friendly and knowledgeable members to teach them the rudiments of the game. Why not give them a call and have a go!
