THESIS PROJECT May 2015


Part I - Thesis Probe After a series of self-exploratory investigation, each student was expected to produce 5-inch-wide, floorto-ceiling installations to show the direction they are interested in . While searching for my identity, I found my voice in poetry. Through the poem, I found out that my identity is not limited to only one culture, but in fact it is all over the map. ‘ To portray my interest in my identity, I built a probe installation for everyone to find their identity through their journey. I built a wooden stand with a big tank of water resting on it. I poured some metal dust into the tank, and left some magnets on the stand. so viewers could either watch my journey through the video, or try their own magnetic journey.

Moving constantly, I thought myself how to feel at home. I learned that ‘home’ doesn’t have to be a house, a room, a city. It doesn’t have to be located on a map, it can move, change I have multiple places around the world that I call home. Some are cities and houses full of memories, Some are people who own the ground I stand on And some are ordinary objects I treasure as art. Standing all around the world, my capitals All share the same big body of water The water that will make me feel at home, The water that can always take me home. Each home, each story has added a different color, A different character to my personality. I am a composition of the colors, and the outcome of all the cities that I have ever called home.


Part 2 - Research Having two hometowns, New York and Istanbul, I have always compared the two cities to each other. While searching for the similarities, I quickly realized that both cities are threatened by the rising water levels. Both being semi-island cities, the bodies of water surrounding them is a big part of their unique cultural identity and the rise in the water levels threatens to erase the life by the coastal areas. However, the two cities handle this problem very differently: While the New Yorkers have done tons of research and thousands of design proposals to save their beloved city, locals of Istanbul are not even aware of the threat. Little to no research has been done, and the water levels has only been recorded of past ten years. To raise awareness of the issue, I created a poetic story : In 2040 the Turkish government will quickly realize the negative effects of the rise in the sea level, therefore, to protect the city, the culture, and the historic heritages, they will build a big wall between old city and new. In 2050 people will start to see the effect on their personal lives, homes, or jobs. So they would start moving to the wall and bring their homes, jobs, hobbies with them. In 2060 people will start to settle down and embrace the wall, quickly practicing their own culture. and making it their own.

After more than a century-long battle, humans have lost the war to global warming. Winters became storms, nights became hurricanes. Glaciers started melting faster than anyone had ever imagined. Low rising lands, nations and their traces, and waterfront cultures were all under threat of being washed away. Realizing the risk of losing the identity of both Istanbul and Constantinople, the Government of Istanbul had to take action to protect the city and the culture that took a thousand year to build. Due to the lack of scientific evidence of the water level changes in the area, the city was not aware of what was coming. They had to take quick action to save the coastal and historic culture. So, they constructed a massive dam-like wall spanning across the Golden Horn connecting the old city center, to the new. Although this wall was meant to bring the two sides of the city together behind a giant wall, it soon acted as a barricade between land and water.

2050The water level has started to increase dramatically. Fishermen can no longer fish, homes started to get destroyed’, streets has become lakes and locals became victims. People living in the coastal areas started to gather their belonging in search of a new home. They couldn’t trust the ever rising shores. They had to locate some higher, and safer. The government built a structure on the wall, hoping it would become a home for casualties.

2060People have relocated to the wall bringing all their belongings hoping to save everything they ever lived for. Fishermen brought their nets and rested near the water, households who had the Bosphorus view moved into houses located high up on the wall, and ferries pulled up by the wall so they could transport people from Asia to the Sur. Soon enough they embraced the wall. They brought their culture and made the Sur their home. They not only brought along their culture, but also practiced it on the shore.

VINCE CENTER URBAN LIFESTYLE CENTER PROVIDENCE, RI May 2015


Located in the heart of downtown Providence, Vince Center is a design proposal for a urban lifestyle center. Currently serving as a parking lot, the site can be very useful for both student and teacher to reside, and for business owners to make more commerce. Located right next to the historical Arcade , the first mall in USA, the ground level of the site is a grand piazza. The piazza serves as a concert/theatre stage, restaurants and cafes, and retail. The second floor is also retail stores as well as galleries and bookstores. There is also a overhanging balcony that looks over the piazza. The building is composed of two parts. The lower part of the building functions as office space, while the taller part of the building serves as an apartment building.

RE-INVENTING :

CONCRETE December 2013


Pre-cast Concrete is full scale project that aims to test concrete and its abilities through pre-cast fabrication. Driven from studies of prestress and post-tension, I created the three drawings representing object of interface, heaviness and lightness, and methods of concrete making. Taking these three factors into account, I have designed a modular precast concrete method that can suit any site. Located in the main green of Rhode Island School of Design, the project is a configuration of various types of concrete blocks that are tied together through post tension. The concrete blocks have inserts- such as green wall, brick, or stone- on some of their faces, in order to draw a firm line between public and private space. The configuration also activates the area by serving as seating, shelter, and gallery.W

The bicycle is designed carefully so that the extensions can be neatly hidden within the design. BLOSSOM DESIGN & BUILD PAWTUCKET, RI May 2013 The Blossom Design/Build was a six week, resilient architectural studio project representing the combined efforts of RISD graduate and undergraduate students. The work was made as part of a RISD Architectural Design studio. The project was to design and build two pavillions: one on land and one on water. The upper pavilion functions as a garden for the Chinese community to raise healthy fruits and vegetables, the water pavillion is used as a floating classroom by the YMCA



TANSU YACHTS During my internship at TANSU Yachts, I worked on three different superyacht projects : Sexyfish, Alyssa, and So’Mar. Sexyfish was at its early stages of design. I worked on creating conceptual sketches and brainstormed ideas. Alyssa was being built at the shipyard. I visited the construction weekly and saw how it was built step by step. So’Mar was getting ready for its launch. I helped decorating the interior and prepared the launch. So’Mar later won the Monaco Superyacht Award in 2015

YUNG YACHT

A luxury yacht I have desinged in 2014. It is unique for its convertable floor plan, and for its uncommon form of the bilge.


TRAPPED Growing up in Turkey, I learned how women got equal rights as men and how they gained a voice in the politics by having a strong educational background. We even had a woman president in the early 90’s. Once government switched over to people who are using religion to dull people, the campaigns such as Send All Girls to School, Too Young To Wed, and Femist Movements are no longer supported by the government. This is not only a step backwards in history, but also a trap for women to hide behind their hijab. This sculptural work depicts how women are losing their power in Turkey, and how they’re being locked away from their own thoughts. Medium: Fabric, net and resin

ATRIUM TABLE The Atrium Table is a two piece modular coffee table that can either be used solo or can be positioned in various ways to accomadate any concept. It is made of oak boards and the structure is supported by mortise and tenon joints.


SIBLINGS Siblings is multi-functional room separator. It can also be folded into a triangle to be used as a coat rack, and the faces can be used as a scarf holder. The three characters and their faces signifies my two siblings and I: Grumpy, Funny, and Sleepy.

BAGSVAERD CHAIR The sinuous concrete curves of the Bagsvaerd’s Church’s ceiling is scaled down to a single human body as a tribute to Jorn Utzon.
