t's been a couple of years since those big, roomy, solid-colored dresses have come into style. A wardrobe item none of us would have given a second glance to – let alone willingly worn – just a few short seasons ago. When they first arrived on the fashion scene only a few brave souls ventured out in them and the rest of us looked at them with a combination of amusement and surprise. They seemed more like robes to be worn at home – and none too flattering at that – than dresses to step out in. But eventually two things happened. Women everywhere discovered how easy and comfortable these free-flowing dresses were – many without buttons, zippers or seams. They might not have been slenderizing but they sure hid a multitude of issues. The second factor was that more designers and manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon and new versions became available in attractive patterns, with more detailing, and in several style variations. And the floodgates opened.

14

One of my sisters was the first in the family to take the plunge and each time I was with her and she was wearing one of those dresses I was intrigued. I finally asked her where she had purchased them and she directed me to an advertiser right from these ESRA pages! I paid them a visit, bought myself and my younger daughter a couple of selections, and officially joined the team. I was okay with the two versions of the big dress I then owned. I experimented with various accessories to improve the big, baggy look and dress them up a little. I actually got many compliments on them. But I was done. Two was enough. Probably one more than necessary. Many months passed and I would occasionally pull out one of the baggy Ds and figure out an appropriate occasion to wear it. Sometimes I added a belt and sweater, never feeling quite right about wearing them as is, although others seemed to pull it off with panache.

I didn't think about the dresses much until some time this past summer, in mid July, sitting on the beach with a group of friends I heard about a must-visit store to shop in Jerusalem, to pick up some baggy dresses. Oh, baggy dresses! I don't need any more of those I thought and closed my eyes to take in the warm rays of sun. Several women then joined the conversation including one who had just returned from the Holy Land. The volume grew louder as she excitedly revealed that she had purchased five dresses on her recent visit and could easily have bought more had there been room in her suitcase to bring them back. I opened one eye and turned my ear towards the conversation. She laughingly told the

group about a mutual friend of ours who had bought nine. Nine! Everyone in our little circle wrote down the name of the store – Habira at 60 Yaffo – to file for their next visit. As I was leaving in three weeks time I opened my second eye as well. "What is so great about the store?" I finally asked. "You can get those baggy dresses in dozens of places in our neighborhood as well as online." Her response was that they had tons of them in every color, "style" and size. I conceded that they were great attire for packing and traveling, folding into almost nothing and never wrinkling. And, yes, they were definitely comfortable. I

One more "to do" item to squash into my upcoming very short visit to Israel. By the time I boarded the plane less than a month later I had convinced myself and the two sisters I was traveling with that Habira was a must-visit on our trip. Needless to say, once I arrived and moved in with my precious overseas family, that list disappeared somewhere among the bags and suitcases, the emotions and tears. My sisters, who were not on the same schedule and with the same obligations as I, visited the dress

shop early in their visit and contributed nicely to the store's profits. I, however, had more delicious items on my agenda – namely my grandchildren – and couldn't get there. A friend of mine from The Five Towns whose daughter lives near mine and who had arrived in Israel a week prior to me, let me know that she had made it there and left with several bagsful of dresses. I wavered between thinking I really didn't need another baggy dress and how could I be in Israel and be so close to the best-baggy-dress-store-ever and not stop in. On my last morning in Jerusalem I found myself with a small pocket of available time and decided to

Continued from page 16 grab a cab and go to town. And I did. I will spare you the details of my twilight zone experience. I spent a couple of hours dazed in the crowded store and emerged squinting in the sunlight with two shopping bags – four dresses – from their never-ending racks. Yes, I could have bought much more but I reigned myself in and managed to leave with just four – two for me and two as gifts. I am home now over eight weeks and am still trying to figure out exactly what happened that day. Why did I even consider those dresses when I already had two

at home and didn't particularly care for how I looked in them? Why did I feel compelled to spend precious moments away from my family just to say I'd been to that store? Why did I buy four dresses when one would have done the job? I've never been one to fall for fads and fashion musthaves. Most of the time I am not even aware of a fad passing through. But while I did get caught up in the baggy dress phase this year, (maybe not as much as some others), I think it is safely out of my system. And just in time. This fashion issue brings us all the latest and best in fashion trends for every member of the family. Enjoy!

Once when visiting my old friends Rafi Magnes and his wife, Liz, who were living in Jaffa at the time, I decided to try making some of these doughnuts myself.

JANUARY 2015, Esra||EsraMagazineOnline.com EsraMagazineOnline.com DECEMBER 2017, Esra

After one bite, Rafi was reminded of the doughnuts he enjoyed while growing up in Jerusalem in the 1950s. “The best soufganiyot were at Café Allenby near the center of the city,” he said. “Near the window was a huge bath of oil that was bubbling, and a machine that would drop the doughnuts into the oil. There was a lady who would turn them over when they were golden. Then she would fish them out and they would dry out on paper. Then another machine would inject them with red jam. What was good was they were so light with a lot of sugar and so big. Everybody in Jerusalem used to buy these soufganiyot for Hanukkah. They were unreal.” • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast • 3 tablespoons sugar, divided • ¾ cup (175 ml) lukewarm milk • 3 ½ cups (450 grams) unbleached all-purpose flour (about) • 1 large egg plus 1 large egg yolk • Pinch of salt
 • Grated zest of 1 lemon
 • 3 ½ tablespoons (50 grams) butter, at room temperature • Vegetable oil for deep-frying • 1 cup, about, of apricot, strawberry, or any flavorful jam, dulce de leche, Nutella, or lemon curd • Confectioners’ or granulated sugar for rolling 1. Dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar in the milk.
 2. Put the flour in the bowl of a food processor equipped with a steel blade. Add the dissolved yeast, whole egg and yolk, salt, lemon zest, and the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar. Process until blended, then pulse until a dough almost forms. Add the butter and process until the dough becomes sticky yet elastic.
 3. Remove the dough to a bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for at least an hour. If you want to prepare it ahead, as I often do, place the dough in the refrigerator overnight, then let it warm to room temperature before rolling and cutting.
 4. Dust a pastry board with flour. Roll the dough out to a 1⁄2-inch thickness. Using the top of a glass, cut into rounds about 2 inches in diameter, then roll l into balls. Cover and let rise 30 minutes more. 5. Pour at least 2 inches of oil into a heavy pot and heat to 375 degrees. 6. Drop the doughnuts into the oil, 4 or 5 at a time. Cook about 3 minutes on each side, turning when brown. Drain on paper towels. Using a pastry or cupcake injector (available at cooking stores and online), insert a teaspoon of jam into each doughnut. Roll the soufganiyot in confectioners’ or granulated sugar and serve immediately.

MIND OVER MATTER: Teaching Children About Money

C

By Robin Daar, LCSW, RN

hanukah is around the corner. A wonderfully festive holiday of fun, food and presents. Chanukah is definitely up there with favorite holidays, certainly for children who impatiently await the gifts they will be receiving. For this month’s column I thought about writing about how one could celebrate the holiday without the giving of gifts, or at least fewer gifts, but I decided I did not want to be the “grinch that stole Chanukah”. This month’s column will therefore be about how to educate children about the value of money so perhaps when they receive presents or gelt they can appreciate them differently. As important as a child who appreciates things he or she is given, is a kid who develops good financial skills from an early age to be ready for some of the challenges of adulthood. Giving your children a good foundation and teaching them about money matters is critical for their personal development. Showing children the basics, such as how to budget, spend and save, will establish good money habits for life. When would be a good time to talk to your child about money? Explaining to younger kids the value of money through real life situations and examples will help them understand where money comes from and how it is earned. The ATM is a great place to start teaching kids about saving and expenses. You can explain to your child that the ATM holds the money you have made by working hard and saving. It is not just a hole in the wall from which money magically emerges. When buying items at the supermarket, and your children are with you, you can explain to them how items are priced and that you can purchase cheaper or more expensive versions of the same product. This is also an opportunity to discuss how you can shop around for the best price. You can get your children to compare prices for you and find the less or least expensive item. You should also explain that choosing the least expensive item is not always the most economical or smartest decision, based on other factors such as quality and quantity. This is also where you can explain about brand names. If they want a particular brand there might be a price difference. Is it worth it? In this age of credit cards, internet banking and online shopping, children don’t often see people buying products with “real” money, cash – bills and coins. money exchanged for purchases makes it harder for kids to get their heads around what things cost. They might see this invisible money – the credit or debit card – as an abstract and unlimited resource rather than real money coming in or out of their family’s bank account. Talking to your children about money helps them understand that this “invisible” money is very real. If you receive bills in the mail this can be an opportunity to explain that electricity or your internet connection costs money. You can explain that you need to work a certain amount of days in order to earn enough money to pay these bills. This helps create a connection between time spent at work and money. Involving your kids in discussions about your family’s budget – in a timely, appropriate and reasonable way – is another opportunity to talk to your children about finances. This helps give them the big picture about costs and spending. You might help your kids put together their own budget. Give them an allowance or pocket money to help them understand the value of money and how far it goes in their own lives. Here is a list of what children at different ages need to know about money: Preschool Age: • We use money to buy things. • Money includes cash and coins with different values. • You earn money by going to work. • There is a difference between things you want and things you need. Primary School: • Comparing prices and shopping around before you buy something is a good habit. • Never shop online without parent’s permission and never share personal information. • Saving up requires patience. Teenagers: • It’s better to use cash rather than credit. • Credit is money you borrow and have to pay back with interest. • It’s good to have savings for emergencies. • If you work a part time job make sure you are being paid correctly and having taxes taken out. • Doing a budget helps you work out how you should spend your money. Teaching your child about the value of money may not excite them right now but one day they will thank you for imparting such important information to them and they will have at least some basic tools to deal with the many financial decisions they will be facing. This way, when they get those long awaited Chanukah gifts, their thank yous may come with a whole different level of understanding and appreciation. They’ll know that money and gifts don’t actually “grow on trees”.

Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: DOMA LAND & SEA

By: Rachel Rosenberg

W

hile I am still a Brooklyn girl through and through, after living in the Five Towns for fourteen years, it is time to call it “home.” In the last decade and a half, I’ve watched the constant turnover of high end restaurants in my neighborhood and wondered why none seem to last. Don’t Orthodox Jews in the Five Towns like to eat out? Or do they travel to Brooklyn or New York City when seeking fine dining? The Five Towns’ most recent addition may finally change things. Welcome Doma Land & Sea. Doma is a Russian term for “home” and I am hopeful that Doma is going to enjoy a long life in my hometown. In the couple of months since Doma opened its doors, not only have most Five Towners checked it out, but many are traveling from Brooklyn and NYC to enjoy the exclusive experience that is Doma. Doma is located in Cedarhurst a few doors down from its sister dairy restaurant Cork & Slice. The most striking feature of Doma is its décor, as the owners spared no expense indicating their intent to stay. The front of the restaurant boasts a beautiful full bar in front of the open kitchen where you can peek in and see the wood grill where the steaks are prepared. To the right of the bar is the glass fronted meat refrigerator where steaks and chops can be seen hanging to age. Upon entering the dining area, diners are greeted by exposed brick walls decorated with eye catching pop art and unusual sconces and hanging chandeliers throughout the large space. There are a couple of different seating areas, each with a slightly different, but fabulous, ambiance. The menu separates appetizers from the land and from the sea with salads and a full sushi menu in the middle. I always love a good ceviche and Doma does not disappoint. Unusually, it has a mix of assorted white fish, including black sea bass, red snapper and fluke. Classically it incorporates red onion and cilantro with slices of avocado. The crispy rock fish tempura is probably one of the

54

more popular fish appetizers. Little bites of black sea bass are fried to a perfect crisp and served in a slightly sweet sauce. As almost every kosher restaurant in New York has a sushi menu, I went with the tuna black truffle roll, as not every kosher restaurant is stocking truffles. The tuna was fresh and the truffles rich and luscious. For the carnivores, the steak tartare is a must, but I would ask for plain bread as the oily garlic bread it is served with tends to overpower the meat. You can’t go wrong with the chicken drum pops because who doesn’t love southern fried chicken? The beef tacos are a delicious two bite crunch with a smoky and spicy flavor. Doma’s menu includes the traditional and obligatory burger and pasta dishes but I would skip these for a fish or steak grilled in their wood burning ovens. The ovens bring out the juices and flavors — especially with a high-quality Delmonico steak. Add crispy beef ‘bacon’ or a sunny side up egg to your perfectly cooked rare steak and you will find yourself wishing you had eaten fewer appetizers. The desserts at Doma take the cake, not literally of course as cake is the last dessert I would order there. The two desserts that are most exceptional are the apple crisp served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream underneath a plate-sized dome made completely of caramel candy and the massive pink cotton candy on a tall wooden stick. These desserts bring out the kid in every diner and make for a great picture for your Instagram story. So much appreciation to the owners of Doma who brought the Five Towns’ fine dining home. Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney and name partner at Rosenberg and Steinmetz PC, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate.
