PLEASANT KNOLL MIDDLE SCHOOL

FORT MILL, SC | Completed 2017

Welcoming over 800 students in August 2017, Pleasant Knoll Middle School is Fort Mill School District’s first three-story school facility. The 38-acre campus includes classroom buildings, gymnasium, baseball field, track, multi-purpose field, field house with restrooms and showers, and associated parking and drives.

Planning & Design: ESP provided phasing and landscape plans, site lighting, driveway connections to Pleasant Road and the existing Pleasant Knoll Elementary School bus drive, offsite roadway improvements, student drop-off and bus access drives, and sidewalks.

Civil Engineering: Our team also provided design services for an underground fire line loop, stormwater management, water and sewer services, extension of a county-owned 12-inch water line, storm drainage systems, three permanent water quality/detention BMPs, grading, and erosion control.

Site Challenges: Due to a stream running through the site, classroom buildings and athletic facilities are located on opposite sides of the stream, requiring a pedestrian bridge to connect the campus. To accommodate challenging typography, site design included the location of retaining walls to allow for grade change.

Phase 1 ESA: A former home and significant accumulations of household debris were discovered on the site. Working closely with the owner, construction manager, and architect, our team revised the site plan to address these conditions in time to submit design documents for approval.

Geotechnical Engineering: ESP performed a surface wave seismic study and subsurface exploration as well as provided recommendations for mass grading, shallow foundation support, potential settlement, retaining wall parameters, high plasticity soils, and seismic site class. Construction materials testing and special inspections were also performed.
