Scientists have to look to the past to help them understand the phenomenon of evolution. Fortunately for them, nature has retained traces of its lengthy history. Meteorites, for example, hold clues pointing to how our planet formed. In addition, some species have evolved very little over hundreds of millions of years, instead relying on strategies that have allowed them to survive without changing their morphology. These species help us better grasp where we come from and the evolutionary forces that have shaped our environment.
