You’ll find it easy to embrace the holiday spirit as events for the next two months tip toward the fun side of life. There are things to enjoy for kids of all ages – activities, contests, concerts, parties, dances and more – not to mention our big Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree parade of lights. An event so popular and, well … paranormal that it’s now being held on two different weekends to give everyone a chance to participate. Come join one of the largest ghost hunts in the United States featuring hands-on, independent, nocturnal investigations of America’s most haunted hotels. With a long history of many uses, including a women’s college and a cancer hospital run by a reputed “mad doctor,” the historic 1886 Crescent Hotel harbors a lot of good opportunity for psychic activity. The structure also stood abandoned for some years, with the doors open and the wind blowing through – so who knows what entities may have taken up residence? There will also be an exploration of sister hotel, the 1905 Basin Park – which will be fully closed off and empty for paranormal investigation purposes. Serious science If you have investigation equipment, bring it and be prepared to stay up at night probing the most active areas of the hotel. All levels of experience are welcome. You’ll also have a chance to learn from the pros, mingle, make connections and share your stories and experiences beyond the veil with other explorers of the supernatural and unexplained. You’ll engage in bona fide investigation of spaces known to be the most active at the Crescent Hotel from midnight to dawn. On Saturday nights, ghost hunts will be orchestrated and led by Crescent hotel resident investigator, author of seven books about the supernatural and founder of ARPAST, the awesome Larry Flaxman. Snacks and beverages will be available in the small hours at both hotels and shuttles will run at certain hours. There is also a discounted rate for early-arriving ESP participants staying Jan. 11 – 14 at either hotel. +

Extrasensory Extras Included! • Crescent Ghost Tours – hear the stories of recurrent sightings, identify active locations and learn the fascinating history of the 1886 Crescent Hotel. • Spirits of the Basin Tour – hear about the spirited people who made Eureka Springs what it is and are said to linger in the halls and ballrooms. Sample the contraband spirits available back when the Basin Park Hotel was a notorious and very popular speakeasy. • ESP testing – expanded to more hours with more and longer tests. Come check out your psi potential. • The Psychomanteum – an ancient Greek form of deprivation chamber where the spirits of the dead were contacted. • Not Really a Door – this one-hour supernatural comedy/ murder mystery/thriller will keep you guessing. • Flickering Tales – a collection of authentic Ozark stories of witches, monsters and ghosts told in the shadowy barefoot ballroom at the Basin Park Hotel. • Psychics’ Salon – where resident mediums will be on hand to divine your future through a variety of means. +

s t c a F Fun Old-timey Christmas gift!

holiday howdy

In the mid-1800’s Ozarks, it was traditional to be the first to say, “Christmas gift!” to whomever you saw first. When people had no other gift, what they had to offer was love.

Handsome Claus

Many original inhabitants of this area celebrated during the winter season, but instead of Santa Claus, natives looked for gifts and candy to be delivered by “The Handsome Fellow.”

Collecting breweriana goes far beyond old beer cans. From road signs to coasters and key chains; if it contained beer, served beer, advertised beer or commemorated an event with beer, somebody wants it. And they just might find it at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center on January 10. Two chapters of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America, the Progress from Tulsa and the Ar-Can-Sas Brewery Collectibles Club get together every year to host what they call a show – but it’s more than a show – it’s more like a buy-sell-trade social, with the emphasis on trade. All of which makes an interesting show when these guys get together. Come browse and be amazed. Hours are 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and admission is free! Watch the Brews page on Facebook for a special announcement about a fun Miss Frothingslosh competition and a possible fake beer can label art contest! +

Got some breweriana you want to show, sell or trade? Tables are only $5. Just show up before 9 a.m. or phone (479) 531-8583 or email erinjbrew1002@aol.com.

Appraisals all day

Bring your coveted “beer things” to the show and get a free appraisal along with tips on collecting. Interested in learning more? See www.BCCA.com or www.ARBEERCLUB.com

Featured Artist: John Rankine is Eureka Fine Art Gallery’s newest member. Rankine originally hails from Toronto and has called Eureka Springs home for the past 20 years. The award winning, multi-media artist and recipient of the 2011 Arkansas Arts Councils Individual Fellowship for outstanding achievement in the arts is an accomplished printmaker, textile artist, found object assemblage and collage artist, photojournalist and fine art photographer. The lone arranger Of his assemblage work, John said, “Even as a child I had a fascination with objects – inanimate little things I’d find, pair and meticulously arrange. My life-long passion in assemblage, melded with my eight-year stint as a photojournalist, organically progressed into the ongoing photography series, Beneath the Surface; my attempt to breathe symbolic life into the inanimate. These simple tableaus, shot in natural light, tell a story – examining life’s hidden underbelly – and invite the viewer to discover what lies beneath the surface.” Come meet John, enjoy refreshments and view a special exhibition including his new photographs and new sculptural assemblage during an artist’s reception Saturday, Dec. 12, from 6 – 9 p.m. during the Second Saturday Gallery Stroll. Eureka Springs is fun to explore, but if you aren’t familiar with the streets, knowing which way to head out once you leave downtown can be a bit challenging. That’s one reason many visitors start their stay with a trolley ride or van tour. Once you’ve seen where things are, it’s much easier to come back to places you want to explore or shops you want to browse. City transportation runs all winter, weather permitting, on the following limited schedule: Trolleys Trolleys will run December through February from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday, on these routes only: Red Route – Historic District & US 62W Blue Route – US 62E to Kettle Campground & N. Main Street (Passion Play Road & Hwy. 23S by request). For a copy of transit schedules, fares and other information, stop by the Transit Office, 137 W. Van Buren, see www.eurekatrolley.org or phone (479) 253-9572. Van Tours You can also opt for a comfy seat on the Totally New Eureka Van Tour. In addition to popular locations in town and out, you can request to see any place you’re interested in. Tours depart at 11 a.m daily (weather permitting) all winter. Shuttle service is also available. Reservations/inquiries epiceurekatours@gmail.com, (479) 981-3193. Taxi, Taxi! We don’t have taxi stands here, but if you ever need one and have a phone you can call our longstanding Eureka Taxi (479) 253-6699 or Abundant Taxi (866) 304-0781. +

Take time for a mass..ahhhh…ge

Here’s a great gift idea – a little bottle of scented massage oil wrapped with a gift certificate for a day at a Eureka Springs Spa or a stress-busting holiday session with one of our fine massage therapists! As you can see right on this page there are many options and services offered by a variety of certified, licensed therapists. In all, there are actually more than 200 different massage techniques providing different benefits, and someone here no doubt offers exactly the type of massage you need. Some massages are soothing, leaving you feeling like you’ve been wrapped in a cocoon and others leave you feeling energized and refreshed. Because this is the season for walking around town shopping, here’s the inside scoop on a quick massage that’s a great treat after you’ve been walking all day or if you just need a little rushed-schedule relief.

or in airports. These are special massage chairs that allow you to lean and sit face forward; taking pressure off your spine so the therapist can work mostly on your neck, shoulders and back. You’re seated with your face resting in a cradle, looking down towards the floor, resting your arms on supports. Your back and neck completely relax while the therapist relieves muscle tension using Swedish massage moves like kneading and

compression. The good thing if you’re on a tight schedule is that you don’t have to take off your clothes or have oils applied. (The bad thing is you won’t get a thorough whole-body massage – but you can save that for tomorrow.) Whether you’ve been shopping, keyboarding all day or working around the house, a chair massage is a great way to work out muscle tension in your upper body before it turns into a full-blown spasm. +

Never let your aspirations and standards fall as quickly as the temperature. Might as well stay in bed to think about this one. Winter is nature’s way of saying “Bite me.” Soooo, wintertime menus in chef-owned and operated bistros are hearty and healthy.

Kansas City Bear Fighters

The Creek Rocks

It’s all the fun of an outdoor music festival in mid winter – but you can forget the scarves and mittens! Come “camp out” inside for the Ozark Mountain Music Festival at the Basin Park Hotel and fight off winter cold with some hot bands. You’re in for four days of fun with fellow music lovers, being up close to bands playing your favorite Bluegrass/ Newgrass/Americana/and Indie Folk sounds, and perhaps sitting in on a midnight jam or two. Enjoy music all day on multiple stages – with the added bonus of being warm and snug indoors! There’s a locals’ night on Thursday, and food all weekend in the Balcony Restaurant. The 2016 headliners, Kansas City Bear Fighters, will be joined by Arkansauce, Friends of the Phamily, Mark Bilyeu (Big Smith) and Cindy Woolf – The Creek Rocks, Opal Agafia and the Sweet Nothings, and NWA International Blues Competition winner, Jimmy Garret. More bands were being added when we went to press in November – so be sure to check for updates! Four-day access passes are $55. For individual ticket prices room/concert packages and list of all bands and performance schedules go to www.ozarkmountainmusicfestival.com or phone the hotel (800) 643-4972.
