A Year of Celebrating 75 Years
In 2023, Easterseals celebrated 75 years of excellence – 75 years of innovation – 75 years of creating an inclusive community. We stand with a powerful and strong 75-year history, but our promise to the community is that we are just getting started
During the year we opened new doors, celebrated big events, rejoiced in the small moments that have significant impact on our families, and continued our legacy of delivering innovative services to the people who count on us. These are people like Rosie, who has been a part of Easterseals since 1975, and families like Elijah’s, who depend on Easterseals Children’s Therapy Services. Read more about our participant stories on pages 10-11.
We officially opened two new locations. We expanded our adult day program to Smyrna, Delaware, at a site which hosts day services for seniors, veterans, and adults with disabilities. We also celebrated the opening of our Caregiver Resource Center at the Milford Wellness Village. This new Easterseals site offers information and resources to support family caregivers of seniors and people with disabilities.
Our events are the catalysts for community involvement in our mission to promote greater independence for people with disabilities, seniors, and their families. The Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge continued growing – we hosted one fun-filled weekend in two locations. We held our second Walk With Me & 5k Run Salisbury, and celebrated the 11th annual Walk With Me & 5K Run Delmarva. The evening of our 75th Anniversary Celebration was aglow and the room was filled with approximately 600 dignitaries, sponsors, supporters, employees and, most importantly, the people and families we serve, who all came together to celebrate at the Chase Center on the Riverfront. Read about these events on pages 4-7 and 14-17. The critical funds raised through these events help create opportunities for our participants to be fully included in our community.
Our participants and their families are the heartbeat behind our mission and why we won’t stop speaking up. We won’t stop advocating. We work hard for people like our 2023 Volleyball Ambassador, Carolyn, and our Walk With Me Ambassadors Scarlett and Wayne. We work hard for the more than 6,700 individuals Easterseals served this past year through direct services and the 38,000 reached through education, training, and referral services.
We are deeply grateful for our supporters, who provide supplemental funding through foundation grants, corporate donations and individual gifts. This support is critical to Easterseals’ ability to serve individuals and families, since many programs remain underfunded.
Easterseals is committed to the vision of a fully accessible and equitable community for people with disabilities. Through our innovative services, passionate advocacy, dedicated employees, and supporters like you, we look to the future with optimism.

Partnerships that Create Job Opportunities
Easterseals is proud to partner with 60 businesses across the state to support more than 80 individuals with disabilities in good paying jobs in the community. Some of those partnerships have been around for a long time. In fact, Zingo’s Supermarket in Newark, Staples, Inc., in Dover and Casapulla’s in Rehoboth Beach, DE have participated in Easterseals’ Supported Employment program for a combined total of 67 years.
Zingo’s Supermarket has employed Patricia “PJ” from the Supported Employment program for over 29 years. PJ, who enjoys working with the customers says, “I spend the money I earn wisely.”
“The Supported Employment program has been a wonderful experience,” Michael A. Zingo, Jr., Owner of Zingo’s, says. “PJ is like family, always has a smile on her face & is friendly to everyone. She puts a smile on your face.”
Casapulla’s has been part of the program for 21 years and has found it to be incredibly rewarding. Jennifer has worked at Casapulla’s since her senior year of high school. It is not only that Jennifer is a hard worker that makes her an ideal employee; it is her cheerful, energetic, and enthusiastic personality that really wins customers over and keeps them coming back.
“Jennifer takes pride in her work, and it is obvious,” Mike La Penta, owner of Casapulla’s South, says. “I’d recommend Supported Employment to other employers to try. My experience has been terrific.”
Staples has been employing Danny for 17 years. Danny says he enjoys using the industrial vacuum to clean the sales floor the most. He enjoys using his paycheck on his hobbies, like bowling, going to the movies, and purchasing art supplies.
Easterseals Supported Employment Services match workers with disabilities with appropriate jobs in local businesses, utilizing Easterseals Employment Specialists who provide ongoing training and coaching to ensure long-term success on the job. Easterseals: A Valuable Resource for a Lifetime
There is a lot to be said about 70-year-old Rosie. She is a huge Michael Bublé fan and loves to sing. The always-fashionable Rosie loves arts & crafts, especially when she does them at one of her favorite places…her Easterseals adult day program, which she has been attending since 1975. That distinction was especially meaningful as we celebrated our 75th anniversary as a local provider of exceptional services for children and adults with disabilities.
“Easterseals day program keeps her alive. She doesn’t have a lot of opportunities to get out at home. She needs the human personal contact. She knows she is loved at Easterseals and that makes her happy,” Rosie’s sister, Kathy, says. “The staff does a great job with everything. You can tell the staff cares about the people and it is not just a job.”
Rosie attends Easterseals’ day program five days a week. Rosie’s brother, John visits her regularly in the program and appreciates the dedicated staff.
“You can tell the staff enjoys what they do. It is always a pleasure going in there. I come out and am always amazed about how they interact with the participants. They are truly concerned for her well-being,” John says. “Rosie loves interacting with people. Without Easterseals, Rosie’s life would be severely impacted.”
Easterseals: Children’s Therapy
An autism diagnosis can be intimidating for some people, but not for Anaya who jumped right into action when her son Elijah was diagnosed with autism. She called Easterseals!
“We chose Easterseals because we know they have a great reputation,” Anaya says.
At Easterseals, each child has their own unique plan matching their abilities and helping them master their individual goals. When Elijah started speech therapy, he only spoke a few words and now he is speaking in short sentences and working on using words to express his feelings.
Feeding Therapy was introduced to help with Elijah’s aversion to wet textures, like baby food. He is now eating grapes and yogurt.
Occupational Therapy helps Elijah with exploring more textures through play, feeding himself with a spoon and holding toys. All his therapies take place in the home making it more convenient for his family. “Easterseals therapists worked tremendously hard with Elijah. Everyone at Easterseals is hands on with his care. They are working with my family and me side-by-side,” Anaya says. “It is the small things that make a difference in his world and in ours. It takes a village and Easterseals is a big part of our village.” They may be our littlest participants, but each child is making big strides towards independence in Easterseals Children’s Therapy and we could not be more proud of their progress!
Independence at Easterseals Camp Fairlee is a Countdown Away
Twelve-year-old Joel already has his calendar marked for his week-long stay at Easterseals Camp Fairlee this summer and he is eagerly counting down the days. Spending time at the fully accessible, one-of-a-kind camp has become a tradition for him where he experiences independence and adventure in a safe environment.
“As his parent, I’ve tried not to allow physical limitations to stop him from opportunities,” Joel’s mom, Amy, says. “Joel did not want to leave camp the first year. It is such an awesome feeling as a parent to have something like Camp Fairlee available that allows him to experience typical activities.”
Joel, who uses a wheelchair, loves ziplining, swimming, dancing, and the arts & crafts at Camp Fairlee. His parents love the one-to-one care from his counselor. Counselors receive intensive training to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the campers.
“The staff that work with him are remarkable. They are there for the campers and make their experience over the top,” Amy says. “Joel would go to camp the whole summer if he could. He talks about camp all year round. Finding Camp Fairlee has been rewarding for the whole family. For Joel, camp enables him to have social independence and time away from his family.”
Planning for the Future of Camp Fairlee
To meet the increase in demand and to successfully address the wide variety of campers’ physical needs, Easterseals has continually made improvements to its facilities over the years. We are now at the juncture of needing additional investments to ensure a strong future for Camp Fairlee.
Planning for Camp Fairlee’s future includes investment in several initiatives. The addition of four universally designed sensory-friendly cabins (funding for the first cabin has been secured), the demolition and reconstruction of the 60-yearold pool, pump house, and pool house, additional funding for campers who demonstrate financial need, and constructing a commercial-grade laundry facility to sanitize campers’ laundry safely. These investments are part of our rolling strategic plan to provide a more engaging and safe experience for our campers, create efficiencies for our staff, increase our capacity to serve future campers, and raise revenue to fund this vital program.
What is a Camp Experience without a Pool?
Our most immediate need is to complete the funding to replace the aging pool with a modern aquatics area that meets the needs of our campers. We have received $1M in funding for the $2.1M project.
New Aquatic Facility:
Camping and swimming are synonymous with summer. At Camp Fairlee, these activities are accessible, beneficial, and fun for people of all ages and abilities. For people with disabilities, the benefit of providing a recreational swimming program is a worthwhile investment towards their physical and mental health. Research has shown that swimming can help
improve motor skills and coordination, heart and lung health, build muscle strength, and increase flexibility.
The 60-year-old aquatic facility at Camp Fairlee is in dire need of replacement. Over the past ten years, the aging pool, shower facilities, and pump house have required extensive repairs. During the summer of 2022, the pool developed a leak of undetermined origin, resulting in a weekly loss of approximately 8 inches of water during the camp season. Replacing the lost water has also created a significant expense. Funding through the Maryland Bond Bill and several generous private donors has resulted in $1 million towards the $2.1 million estimated cost to demolish and replace the existing pool, demolish and relocate the pump house, replace and redesign the pool house (to include the pump house), install new plumbing, new fencing, landscaping, and the addition of the required access road for emergency events.
The new design will create a pool that is accessible for our campers with a zero-entry ramp, rails, a soft-deck transfer station designed for safety, and a lanai for protection from the sun. The required emergency access road will also improve accessibility for campers to the pool, outdoor theater, and campfire area.
The cost of building the pool includes environmental requirements, stabilizing the ground beneath the pool to build up from a 10’ depth to a 5’ depth, and mitigate the erosion caused to the ground beneath the pool due to the ongoing leak.
The anticipated start of the aquatic facility project is the fall of 2024 based on a 9-month construction project with completion for use by the beginning of the camp season around June of 2025.
2023 EASTERSEALS
CAI VOLLEYBALLCHALLENGE
The 42nd Annual Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge was held over one weekend at two locations. William Penn High School hosted on March 25 and Delaware State University hosted on March 26.
The success of this event depends on the support of our corporate donors and our wonderful volleyball team fundraising efforts. This year we celebrated CAI as the Title Sponsor for 20 years! As our Title Sponsor they have raised over $660,000.
CAI believes in the mission of Easterseals and for greater independence of people with disabilities. We believe through our sponsorship we are investing in independence, inclusion, equity, and in individuals who participate in Easterseals services. – Skip Pennella
The two-day event raised over
$187,959!
$180,000
Easterseals has been meeting the needs of the 2023 Volleyball Ambassador, Carolyn, and her family since she was a baby. She now participates in our adult day program, which has made all the difference. Carolyn’s mom, Jeanne, says, “Easterseals means integrity, inclusion, respect, friendship, and possibilities. Because of Easterseals, there are so many things she can do now.”
WALK WITH ME SALISBURY
The second annual Walk With Me & 5K Run Salisbury was held on Saturday, September 16, at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #817. Over 100 walkers/ runners attended the event which raised over $38,190. It was a beautiful walk through the City Park followed by a lunch hosted at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #817. Our ambassador, Scarlett, is shining brightly in life thanks to her firm foundation with Easterseals Children’s Therapy services.
WALK WITH ME DELMARVA
The 11th annual Walk With Me & 5K
Run Delmarva was held on a lovely fall afternoon on October 22 and raised over $80,150. This annual event raises much needed money for programs and services for people with disabilities in the Delmarva region. Wayne, who participates in our adult day program, served as this year’s ambassador. Easterseals is thrilled to be able to support Wayne in the program and his dad Gary, who is his primary caregiver, through our Personal Attendant Services.

THE BILL ADAMI FUND FOR INNOVATION
Honoring the memory of a beloved leader in disability advocacy
Former Easterseals President and CEO, Bill Adami, dedicated his life to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. As a 14-year-old volunteer at a state institution for people with significant intellectual disabilities, Bill looked at the inhumane treatment at that time and it forged his passionate commitment to ensure that people with disabilities would be treated with dignity and respect.
During his 22 years with Easterseals, Bill’s vision was to provide services for people with disabilities allowing the highest level of independence. With Bill’s untimely passing, the Easterseals Board of Directors unveiled a fund bearing his name that will honor Bill’s legacy of leadership and innovation at Easterseals.
Each year, staff are encouraged to submit a proposal to pilot a new service or program that will benefit those we serve like new assistive technology or adaptive watercraft for use at Camp Fairlee. We are grateful to the following supporters who designated their gift to this fund in 2023:
