INTRODUCTION INTRODUZIONE Jose Escofet and Miriam Escofet, father and daughter, are both painters. They have both exhibited widely in Europe and Jose Escofet has also had many successful solo exhibitions in New York. This is their first joint exhibition and the first time their work is shown in Italy.

This exhibition comprises 135 artworks. Most of the works are by Jose Escofet including previously unseen drawings, pastels and paintings dating back to the 1950’s, recent floral compositions for which he is best known and his most recent body of work: a new departure into fantastical imagery shown here for the first time. It is his first retrospective exhibition in his 80th year. His works are catalogued here chronologically.

Miriam Escofet shows a selection of her works including imaginary still lifes, architectural compositions, landscapes and portraiture.

This catalogue illustrates all the works in the exhibition.

Jose Escofet e Miriam Escofet, padre e figlia, sono entrambi pittori. Hanno entrambi esposto largamente in Europa e Jose Escofet ha avuto anche molte mostre personali di successo a New York. Questa e’ la loro prima mostra insieme e la prima volta che i loro lavori vengono esposti in Italia.

La mostra comprende 135 opere d’arte. La maggior parte delle opere sono di Jose Escofet comprendendo disegni inediti, pastelli e dipinti risalenti al 1950, recenti composizioni floreali per le quali e’ maggiormente riconosciuto ed i suoi corpi di lavoro piu’recenti: un nuovo viaggio verso un’immaginario fantastico in mostra qui per la prima volta.

E’ la sua prima mostra retrospettiva nel suo 80esimo anno di eta’. I lavori sono catalogati in modo cronologico.

Miriam Escofet espone una selezione del suo lavoro includendo natura morta immaginaria, composizioni architettoniche, paesaggi e ritrattistica.

JOSÉ ESCOFET Born in Terrassa, Spain in 1930, Jose Escofet knew from a very early age that he was born to paint. Completely self–taught, relying on his natural talent and draughtsmanship, he explored different techniques and styles in search of his artistic voice.

He moved to Barcelona as a young man where he worked as a freelance graphic artist for some 25 years, whilst painting privately in his studio. This was a time of experimentation and gestation in his work, never exhibiting and discarding most of his production.

In 1979 he moved to the UK with his English wife and three children.

The move to England proved a turning point in Escofet’s life. The quality of the northern light and the wealth of flora propelled him in a new direction, manifesting in a remarkably fruitful period of Still Life and Flower paintings.

In 1987 he had his first solo exhibition with paintings in gouache, evolving onto oils after a few years, the medium in which he still paints today. He has exhibited widely in London and New York, having many successful solo exhibitions.

Now in his 80th year he feels he is creatively more fertile than ever and has embarked upon a new direction in his work where the experience of many years’ study of flora and fauna is synthesizing into a completely subjective expression of his vision of the microcosm of the world, leading to fantastical and surreal imagery.

His work is in many important Private Collections in the USA and Europe.

“Having experimented in the past with different media including Pumice, Latex and Marble dust, I evolved through expressionism and abstraction and eventually returned to figurative painting. I then settled some 20 years ago on a love for Still-Life and the technical demands of that genre, having always admired the Dutch and Spanish Schools of Still- Life painting.

This very soon led me into the world of nature and plants. There was a move away from the staged Still Life.

I became, and still am, totally fascinated and absorbed by the inexhaustible variety of Flora and Fauna and wanted to capture this in paintings that I saw as intimate small landscapes - where the ground, the insects and the background gain equal weight in the composition.

I find the microcosm in nature totally absorbing and beautiful in an ‘other wordly’ and magical way and endlessly inspiring. This connection with nature has proved for me an inspiration that has lasted many years and produced many exhibitions of work.

Lately I have been wanting to move the work from a depictional approach to a more subjective and imaginary approach that best conveys my personal and emotional involvement with nature; to try to emphasize the more fantastical and magical aspects of it which I see more and more. Flowers are still at the core of my paintings but different elements are incorporated as a way of expressing my vision of nature as a magical realm. I play with proportions and create strange morphings of plants and creatures. I feel my engagement with plants is so deep now that I want to express a personal view of them, in a sense to depict what the eye cannot see. There is a consciously strong fantastic and surreal feel to my current work which I continue to develop. I am trying to express my belief that in nature we are all interconnected and of equal importance - be it a plant, an insect or a human being.

This is a very intimate journey. I feel I have just arrived at the artistic expression I have long been searching for and feel very excited to have taken this turn.”

Nato a Terrassa, Spagna nel 1930, Jose Escofet sapeva fin dalla giovane eta’ che era nato per dipingere. Completamente autodidatta, facendo affidamento solo al suo talento naturale e DRAUGHTSMANSHIP, ha esplorato differenti tecniche e stile in ricerca della sua voce artistica.

Da giovane si trasferi’ a Barcellona dove lavoro’ come artista grafico freelance per circa 25 anni, mentre dipingeva privatamente nel suo studio. Questo fu un periodo di sperimentazione e gestione del suo lavoro, non esponendo e scartando gran parte delle sue creazioni.

Nel 1979 si trasferisce in Inghilterra con la moglie e i tre figli.

Il trasferimento in Inghilterra rappresenta un punto di svolta per la vista di Escofet. La qualita’ della luce del nord e la ricchezza della flora lo spinse verso nuove direzioni, manifestandosi in un periodo straordinariamente fecondo per dipinti di natura morta e floreali.

Nel 1987 tiene la sua prima mostra personale con dipinti a tempera, evolvendosi negli anni successivi in dipinti a olio, il metodo utilizzato per i suoi dipinti ancora oggi. Ha esposto ampiamente a Londra e New York, ottenendo molte mostre personali di successo.

Ora nel suo 80esimo anno di eta’ sente di essere piu’ che mai creativamente fertile e ha intrapreso una nuova direzione per i suoi lavori dove l’esperienza di molti anni di studio della flora e della fauna vengono sintetizzati in una espressione del tutto soggettiva della sua visione del microcosmo del mondo, portando ad immagini fantastiche e surreali.

I suoi lavori si trovano esposti in molte importanti collezioni private negli Stati Uniti ed in Europa.

“Avendo sperimentato in passato con differenti media tra cui pomice, lattice e polvere di marmo, evolvendomi attraverso l’espressionismo e l’astrazione sono ritornato infine alla pittura figurativa. 20 anni fa mi sono fermato sull’amore per la naturamorta e le tecniche rappresentative di quel genere, avendo sempre ammirato le scuole olandesi e spagnole per la pittura di natura morta.

Questo mi portò molto presto nel mondo della natura e delle piante. C’è stato un’allontanamento dalla scena della natura morta.

Sono diventato, ed ancora lo sono, totalmente affascinato e assorbito dalla inesauribile varietà di flora e fauna e volevo cattura questo in dipinti che vedevo come un’intimo piccolo paesaggio – dove il terreno, gli insetti e lo sfondo assumevano lo stesso peso nella composizione.

Trovo il microcosmo della natura totalmente assorbente e meraviglioso in un “altro mondo” magico ed infinitamente stimolante. Questo legame con la natura si è rivelato per me un’ispirazione che dura da molti anni ed ha prodotto numerose mostre di lavori.

Ultimamente ho voluto spostare il mio lavoro da un approccio descrittivo ad un approccio più soggettivo ed immaginario che maggiormente esprime il mio coinvolgimento personale ed emotivo con la natura; per cercare di sottolineare gli aspetti più fantastici e magici di questa che vedo sempre di più. I fiori sono ancora al centro dei miei quadri ma differenti elementi sono inseriti in modo da esprimere la mia visione della natura come un regno magico. Io gioco con le proporzioni e creo strane unioni di piante e creature.

Sento che la mia unione con piante e cosi profonda ora che voglio esprimere una visione personale di queste, in un certo senso di rappresentare ciò che l’occhio non può vedere. Vi è una forte consapevolezza di fantastico e sentimento surreale nei miei lavori di oggi che continuo a sviluppare. Sto cercando si esprimere la mia convinzione che in natura siamo tutti interconnessi e di pari importanza – sia esso una pianta, un insetto o un essere umano.

Questo è un viaggio molto intimo. Sento di essere appena arrivato all’espressione artisca che ho a lungo cercato e sono molto emozionato di aver preso questa direzione.”

MIRIAM ESCOFET Being the daughter of a painter and having an artistic mother, I grew up in an environment full of art, watching my father paint and make things all his life - in a sense he was my first teacher.

I remember from a very early age spending hours pouring over books on many different artists, but in particular it was the paintings of the gothic and renaissance period that especially captivated me. I found in these richly visual works a whole other reality of mystical worlds that were completely fascinating and extraordinary. It was like opening a door into a hyper real universe.

At Art School I purposely set out to study a skills based 3D Design course, where I specialized in ceramics. My rationale for this being that I have always loved the ‘making process’ and I am very fascinated by the three dimensional and textural quality of objects, spaces etc. The painting evolved, on leaving Art College, as a way of exploring more complex themes, and through exploring the possibilities of spatial qualities on a two dimensional plane. Drawing and making are still at the core of the work, but painting allows me to invent other spaces and ideas with no physical constraints.

There are many influences in my work and it would be impossible to list them all.

I am fascinated by art and architecture of the classical period, when aesthetics and proportion were thought to communicate eternal and divine truths and art was considered a physical depiction of the divine.

In paintings of the gothic and renaissance period, I am mesmerized and completely seduced by the details and textures of these works, by their sheer beauty and skill of execution. I find the ‘structure’ of their compositions fascinating: the marriage of perspective (the rational) with divine themes (the mystical) which brings an almost surreal quality to the paintings.

In my work I try to explore ideas of aesthetics, imagination and symbolism, and in a sense to pay homage to the art and objects that have particular meaning for me and which I find beautiful.

Recently I have been drawn to allegorical and archetypal themes and the idea of magical landscapes and archaic pasts. A particular recent theme being the olive tree, which for me is an almost sacred tree, being so deeply embedded in the mythology, religion and landscape of the Mediterranean.

Portraiture is another recent development in my work which I want to develop more.

There are varied processes that lead up to each painting and some of them can be very involved: including the construction of maquettes and models which then become the subject matter for the painting and are tackled like a still life, the use of elaborate perspective to ‘invent’ space, the combining of actual and invented objects.

But whatever the idea or subject matter that sparks the genesis of a painting may be, there always comes a point when the work begins to talk back to you and through the alchemical process of painting takes on a life of it’s own, in a sense making it’s own decisions. The finished piece has to exist on its own visual merit, without explanation or subtext

Essendo la figlia di un pittore ed avendo una madre artistica, sono cresciuta in un ambiente pieno di arte, guardando mio padre dipingere e creare tutta la sua vita – in un certo senso è stato il mio primo maestro.

Mi ricordo che fin dalla giovane età passavo ore sui libri di molti artisti differenti, ma in particolare erano i dipinti del periodo gotico e rinascimentale che mi affascinavano particolarmente. Trovavo in queste opere riccamente visive un altra realtà di mondi mistici completamente affascinanti e straordinari. Era come aprire una porta in un universo iper reale.

A scuola d’arte ho intenzionalmente deciso di studiare un corso di progettazione 3D, dove mi sono specializzata in ceramica.

La motivazione per aver fatto questa scelta è stata dovuta dal fatto che ho sempre amato il “processo di creazione” e sono molto affascinata dalle tre dimensioni e dalle qualità tessituriali degli oggetti, spazi, ecc.

La pittura è evoluta, alla fine dell’Art College, come un modo per esplorare un tema più complesso, attraverso l’esplorazione delle possibilità della qualità spaziale su un piano bidimensionale. Disegnare e creare sono ancora al centro del lavoro, ma la pittura mi permette ti inventare altri spazi ed idee senza restrizioni fisiche.

Ci sono molte influenze nei miei lavori e sarebbe impossibile fare una lista di tutte.

Sono affascinata dall’arte e dall’architettura del periodo classico, quando l’estetica e la proporzione erano pensati come mezzo per comunicare con l’eterno e la verità divina e l’arte veniva considerata come descrizione fisica del divino. Nei dipinti del periodo gotico e rinascimentale, sono ipnotizzata e completamente sedotta dai dettagli e dai tessituriali di questi lavori, per la loro bellezza e per la capacità di esecuzione.

Trovo la “struttura” della composizione affascinante: il matrimonio della prospettiva (il razionale) con temi divini (il mistico) che porta ai dipinti una realtà quasi surreale.

Nel mio lavoro cerco di esplorare idee di estetica, immaginazione e simbolismo, in modo da rendere omaggio all’arte ed agli oggetti che hanno un valore particolare per me e che trovo essere bellissimi.

Recentemente sono stata attratta da temi allegorici e archetipici ed all’idea di paesaggi magici e di un passato arcaico. Un tema particolare, di recente, è l’albero dell’ulivo, che per me è quasi come un albero sacro, essendo cosi profondamente radicato nella mitologia, relegione e paesaggi del Mediterraneo.

La ritrattistica è un’altro sviluppo recente del mio lavoro la quale voglio sviluppare maggiormente.

Ci sono diversti processi che portano ad ogni quadro ed alcuni di questi possono essere molto coinvolgenti: compresa la costruzione di bozzetti e modelli che poi diventano la materia per il dipinto e che vengono affrontate come natura morta, l’utilizzo di un prospettiva elaborata per “inventare” spazi, la combinazione di oggetti reali ed inventati.

Ma qualunque sia l’idea o l’oggetto che suscita la genesi di come un dipinto possa essere, arriva sempre un punto in cui il lavoro comincia a risponderti ed attraverso il processo alchemico della pittura prendendo una vita tutta sua, in un certo senso prendendo le proprie decisioni. L’opera finita deve esistere per i propri meriti visivi, senza spiegazioni o sottotesto.
