Una investigación realizada sugiere que las corrientes marinas, como la que pasa por Panamá y llega hasta las Islas Galápagos, pueden ayudar a la recuperación de los arrecifes coralinos. Mucho antes de que los primeros faraones construyeran las pirámides de Egipto ya existían los arrecifes coralinos del Golfo de Chiriquí. Tan antiguos son que se han convertido en los más grandes en extensión de todo el Pacífico Tropical Oriental. Se asemejan a una “megápolis” submarina con poblaciones verticales de entre 10 y 12 metros, y edades máximas de 600 a 5mil años. Con milenios de existencia, continúan siendo refugio de la mayor biodiversidad de la región.
De acuerdo con una investigación de “The Nature Conservancy”, estos arrecifes coralinos actúan como sitios de reproducción de gametos y larvas coralinas que se dispersan con las corrientes marinas, como la corriente de Panamá, que corre como un poderoso río submarino hacia el sudoeste y luego toma rumbo hacia las lejanas islas Galápagos, ubicadas a más de mil kilómetros del continente, en Ecuador.

Research suggests that marine currents, such as the one that flows from Panama to the Galapagos Islands, can play a role in the recovery of coral reefs. The coral reefs of the Gulf of Chiriqui existed since long before the first Pharaohs built the pyramids. They are so ancient that their expanse is the largest in the entire Western Tropical Pacific. Ranging in age from 600 to 5,000 years, it is an underwater “megapolis” rising and falling 10 to 12 meters (31-38 ft) vertically. These millennium old reefs are the region’s primary refuge of marine biodiversity. Research by The Nature Conservancy reveals that the reefs are utilized for the reproduction of coralline gametes and larva. From here they are dispersed on the great Panamanian current that takes them southwest to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands via a mighty underwater river; their journey lasts more than a thousand kilometers.
