InDUstRIal DesIGn

In industrial design, as in architecture, the goal is to solve a problem. RightProduced by a team, these sketches show design concepts for the K-Yan, a “vehicle for knowledge” to be used in rural communities in third world countries where children often must stop going to school at a young age to help farm. Designed to provide access to education at night near their homes, rather than having to travel long distances to schools during the day, the K-Yan is a portable device that stores and projects teaching materials in areas with minimal access to electricity and technology. While in India as a member of the research team, I explored the existing product’s functionality and limitations during my visits to schools. Facing PageTo drink from a bottle or sippy cup, children have to angle the vessel to an almost vertical position. When they transition to a regular glass, their first instinct is to tilt it high in order to drink, which often results in spills. To mediate that issue, I designed “Tilt,” a transitional cup, to teach the child to tilt more slowly in order to drink. The main design features are:

s n

Interior Spout - to channel liquid into one area to reduce spills

e

Transparent Lid - to provide visual cues about the changing level of liquid when drinking

e

Interchangeable Lids - to accommodate increasing ability to drink without spills Rubber on Base - to increase stability Simple Form - to mimic adult glass

Sketches for the design of a collapsible pinhole camera. The design uses a pivoting “X” bracket, blackened with gun bluing to prevent the refraction of light, to expand and collapse the camera’s shell. A light-blocking fabric in between the camera’s outer shell pieces allows for separation in order to obtain the right focus. 6

These photos were taken with the collapsible pinhole camera around campus. Its compact design and ability to expand made it easy to carry and ready to use at any given moment.

This is a selection of miscellaneous work that has either helped influence design for other projects or is just a collection of examples of design thinking. These sketches, drawings, models and experiments are part of the design process, even if they lead to a concept that doesnt work with the project they were orginially designed for.
