Add a touch of class to your tuxedo with this black and white woven silk pin stripe bow tie from Vineyard Vines $55 www.vineyardvines.com

When a man dresses in a black tuxedo for a black tie event or a formal wedding, he feels confident and self-assured. Every well-dressed man should have at least one black tuxedo jacket and pants in his wardrobe. If you want to be certain that your tuxedo is designed with the finest fabric and fits perfectly, you can invest in a custom-made tuxedo or you can opt for a ready-to-wear designer tuxedo and have it tailored. A black bow tie and a black cummerbund are essential when you're wearing a tuxedo, but you might want to try something new and different such as a silk bow tie designed in a solid color or stripes that will add unmistakable class to your formal attire. A pair of black leather dress shoes and a white cotton dress shirt are must-haves when you're wearing a formal tuxedo. The finishing touch for your formal look is a colorful silk pocket square. We're certain that you'll be dressed to impress at any formal occasion when you're wearing a luxe tux.

Kaye Nicole Couture

Kaye Nicole Couture is bringing the fashion of custom bridal couture gowns to the St. Louis area. Located in historic downtown Troy, Missouri, Kaye Nicole Couture is the destination for a customized experience. Specializing in lavish, handmade, customized wedding gowns, Kaye Nicole Couture bridal studio caters to each bride’s personal style with an impeccable fit. Inspired by a bride’s vision and passion for handcrafted elegance, Cyndi Mueller and Angie Ruckel started Kaye Nicole Couture seven years ago in order to provide a customized experience for their brides. After owning a bridal store for several years, Angie realized that brides were missing out on the luxury of having a couture wedding gown made to fit their body flawlessly and reflect their personality perfectly. The true meaning of couture is a unique garment handmade for one person. Cyndi and Angie know how important the bridal gown is to a bride and how important it is to have a sensible yet elegant gown that reflects the bride’s personality. They want to give a bride the memories of creating their own intimate heirlooms and traditions. Angie and Cyndi consult with brides to discuss fit and designs that would suit the bride best. Brides enjoy the beginning process with designs and details of their choice or they can choose from an original Kaye Nicole Couture design. Once a bride chooses a design, a cotton pattern is made and fabrics are chosen. After the pattern is perfectly fitted to the bride and she approves of the design, the actual dress will be cut out from the fabric of her choice. Brides may also have the choice of incorporating a vintage gown of their choice into their dress, whether this be mother or grandmothers dress. Brides can then choose intricate details such as hand-beaded lace or hand-crafted veils made with sophisticated details. Nonetheless, Kaye Nicole Couture’s brides fall in love with their dress within minutes of trying on their cotton pattern. Each fitting brings new excitement to see the finished gown. A bride’s wedding gown is the focal point of their wedding day and each bride looks stunning when making their debut down the aisle in a Kaye Nicole Couture custom made wedding gown.

The Ylang Ylang (caning ordata) essential oil comes from the flower petals of the Large Tropical Ylang Ylang trees. Its called Flower of Flower because of its sweet floral scent. REHEARSAL DINNERS

If you're looking for a rehearsal dinner venue that specializes in providing you with a memorable dining experience, here's a short list of St. Louis' most sought-after dining destinations. One of St. Louis' most popular restaurants for rehearsal dinner parties is Balaban's, situated in Chesterfield. This awardwinning restaurant is known for its contemporary American cuisine that's paired with exceptional wines, selected from a wine list of 650 different wines. Balaban's event staff will work with you to plan an exceptional rehearsal dinner. In addition to having a reputation for outstanding food and wine, Balaban's offers service that's superior and a commitment to excellence. You won't be disappointed. Cafe Napoli, centrally located in cosmopolitan Clayton, is recognized as one of St. Louis's finest Italian restaurants that specializes in regional Italian cuisine paired with fine Italian wines. Cafe Napoli's Wine Room seats eight to twelve guests. The Pompeii Room seats eleven to sixteen guests. If your guest list is limited to thirty people, Cafe Napoli's Bar Napoli Wine Room is a good choice. For a larger rehearsal dinner gathering, Cafe Napoli's Reserve Room seats twenty five to fifty guests. You can also rent out Cafe Napoli's spacious bar venue for private parties. The Frontenac Hilton, located in Frontenac, is one of St. Louis' most elegant venues for luxurious rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions. The Frontenac Hilton' intimate Provinces Bar & Grill, which offers French Bistro cuisine, and the spacious ballroom are both perfect for rehearsal dinner parties. At the Frontenac Hilton, you'll find impeccable service and quality that's hard to find at other St. Louis restaurants and hotels. Ces & Judy's, which is located at Le Chateau Village in Frontenac, can cater a rehearsal dinner at the venue of your choice or they can cater a delicious rehearsal dinner in your home. Ces & Judy's Marketing Manger Natalie Kaczmarczyk, says, “Food stations are very popular for rehearsal dinners. Ces & Judy's savory menus offer something for everyone. We especially like the petite filet mignon served with classic bordelaise sauce and grilled salmon. We think that these fine dining venues will inspire you with their attention to detail and outstanding cuisine.

elegant WEDDING gifts BY ROBYN WALKER If you're a bride-to-be, creating your gift registry can be great fun, but a bit overwhelming. First, you'll want to select a china pattern that you absolutely love such as Juliska's Country Estate china that's designed in classic blue and white or Mottahedeh's colorful Tobacco Leaf china.

Do you want several pieces of handmade English crystal such as William Yeoward's Dakota ice bucket? Would you like a set of champagne flutes such as Simon Pearce's Woodstock design? Do you need water goblets, wine glasses, candlesticks, wine coasters, serving pieces, platters, trays, a salad bowl, picture frames, a champagne cooler, a cake stand, a vase and flatware?

Once you've decided which wedding gifts to select for your wish list, you'll need to choose a retail store that has a full-service gift registry.

One of our favorite gift registries is at Mary Tuttle's, which offers an amazing selection of wedding gifts from exclusive brands such as William Yeoward, Mottahedeh, Juliska, Vietri, Simon Pearce and Gien.

We think that you'll be pleasantly surprised when you visit Mary Tuttle's, where you'll find a wonderfully unique selection of elegant wedding gifts that are perfect for your home.

BRIDAL TRADITIONS By Robyn Walker The traditional white wedding gown has a fascinating history. In 1840, Queen Victoria of England wore an elaborate white silk satin wedding gown that was embellished with luxurious handmade lace for her wedding to Prince Albert of Germany. During the Victorian era, royal brides traditionally wore silver gowns for their weddings, but Queen Victoria chose to wear a white wedding gown, which symbolized wealth and social status. By the early 1900s, white bridal gowns had become a tradition. Many of the wedding gowns in the early 1900s were designed with corsets, high waists and long trains. During the 1920s, often referred to as the Roaring 20s, glitzy, glamorous flapper-style dresses that had a dropped waist were in style. Flapper dresses, which were short and trimmed with fringe and beads, influenced the wedding dress styles of that memorable decade. In the 1930s, the wedding dress styles were sophisticated, glamorous and reminiscent of old Hollywood. Many of the wedding dresses from that era were designed in sleek white satin and embellished with fancy beads. The 1940s wedding dresses from The World War II, which were practical,

were often designed with white parachute silk. In the 1950s, many of the bridal gowns were tea length and designed with delicate tulle fabric. The slim-silhouette wedding gowns of the 1960s were influenced by the fashionably chic first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. In the 1970s, Bohemianstyle wedding dresses were everywhere. In the 1980s, white lace bridal dresses designed with ballerina skirts were a popular fashion trend. In the 1990s, the wedding gown styles were minimalist. In the 2000s, strapless bridal gowns were sought-after styles. Today's bridal fashion trends are mermaid gowns designed with flared hems, flattering off-the-shoulder dresses and pastel pink gowns. Eventhough the wedding gowns trends come and go each year, the traditional white wedding gown will remain a fashion classic that never goes out of style. THE

Perfect

WEDDING RECEPTION BY ROBYN WALKER

We think that one of the most memorable wedding receptions during the spring and summer months is an outdoor tented reception at your home. If you have a wedding planner, you can work with her to handle all of the details that are necessary for a tented wedding reception. If you're planning the reception, it's best to create a check list such as the tent rental, lighting, party rentals, flowers, cake, caterer, dance floor, musicians and valet parking. Whether your reception is for a large group of guests or a smaller, more intimate gathering, you can rent a tent that will comfortably accommodate all of your guests. A classic white tent is always a good choice, but you may want to consider a tent that has colorful stripes or a clear, transparent tent. You can rent the tables, chairs, chair covers, linens, crystal, silver and glassware from a multitude of party rental companies that specialize in at-home wedding receptions. We especially like the faux-bamboo ballroom chairs that are designed in white. For a decorative touch, you can tie white or pastel ribbons around each chair. You can work with your caterer to create a savory three-course dinner menu. Another option is to have an informal buffet where your guests can serve themselves. Your florist can create exquisite floral centerpieces for the tables using seasonal flowers in soft pastel colors of pink and blue mixed with white lilies in tall silver vases. When you're ordering the wedding cake, we think that a classic white wedding cake that's decorated with fresh seasonal flowers is always in good taste. You'll also need to rent a small table to display the cake. After the wedding cake has been served to your guests with an accompaniment of fresh fruit and whipped cream, we suggest that you add a touch of class with crystal flutes of chilled champagne. The finishing touch, of course, to this perfect wedding reception is a gracious toast to the new bride and groom.

MIX

&MATCH BY ROBYN WALKER

For couples who've just tied the knot, mixing and matching their pieces of furniture in a new home or condo can be quite a challenge. One effortless way of creating a pulled together look is to decorate with a neutral color palette. You can reupholster mismatched sofas and chairs using a mix of luxurious decorator fabrics designed in soft colors or neutrals.

Create an elegant ambiance with a pair of eye-catching designer pillows. A neutral area rug is essential when you're mixing and matching different styles of furniture. If your husband's taste is modern and your taste is traditional, use your imagination to create a room that has visual interest. Make a list of the furniture that stays and the furniture that goes to the consignment shop. An estate sale is one of your best bets for downsizing and simplifying. A neutral-hued sofa, a pair of comfortable arm chairs and a small table are good starting points for your living room. If you have framed artwork, the ideal place to display your art is above your sofa. SPIRO’S

BY SUSAN HEIMANN

W HE RE T RADI T I O N I S TH E N EW TR END Looking for fantastic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine? Spiro’s in Chesterfield is where you will find it! Many restaurants run their course, but there are those special restaurants that through their tradition of continued quality and dedication to the food and the patron dining experience stand the test of time. Spiro’s is rich with tradition. Konstantine Karagiannis brought his family to St. Louis in 1957. He also brought with him his Greek culture and heritage. Since that time his sons have flourished as restaurateurs. Harry Karagiannis is the owner of Spiro’s West in Chesterfield. His warmth and attentiveness to his customers leave them feeling as if they are family. Greek and Mediterranean cuisine can be enjoyed with every bite. The unique flavors of the food transport the guest to the Mediterranean and create a memorable and enjoyable dining experience. That will leave the customer wanting to return before they have even left the restaurant. The selections on the Spiro’s menu appeal to all ages, from the college student returning home for a visit requesting that her mother pick up some Dolma (grape leaves stuffed with lamb and beef, topped with cream sauce) for her arrival home, to the St. Louis celebrity that has his favorite table. They offer a variety of signature entrees ranging from fresh Hand

Cut Pasta, Coldwater Lobster Tails to mouth watering Lamb Shank braised in it’s own juices. While enjoying the Lamb Shank one customer from out of town, but also a St. Louis native, Nick H., exclaimed in all sincerity “ This is amazing! I can’t believe how good this is! It’s like getting a present!” For many people in the community it is as if they are returning home every time they dine at this restaurant. It is a very welcoming place with open arms, even for the ladies that like to have lunch in the back of the restaurant and play Mahjong. It is an exclusive restaurant where everyone is welcome and everyone is accommodated. Spiro’s appeals to many people not only for their cuisine, but also for those looking for some nightlife as well on a Friday or Saturday night. They have great music that really draws the trendy uptown crowd into the restaurant. Spiro’s is the place to see and be seen. Spiro’s is many things to many people all with their unique reasons for being there. From the decision of Konstantine Karagiannis to come to America and bring his country with him, to the legacy he has left through his children and grandchildren, so that we can all enjoy a Greek flair and experience the Mediterranean right here in Chesterfield, MO. Prepare to be amazed!

Love on the Dotted Line Local attorney Bruce Friedman has achieved many accomplishments in his lengthy career. Not only has he been named one of “The Best Lawyers in America” by Naifeh & Smith, St. Louis Magazine has also voted him as one of “St. Louis Top Lawyers” since 2003. Professional accolades aside, on a personal level Friedman is a passionate advocate on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association. Uptown Lifestyle recently had the opportunity to learn more about his work with a charity that is close to his heart.

Prenuptial Agreements—Not Just for the Rich and Famous A prenuptial agreement, sometimes called an ante-nuptial agreement, is a contract made before marriage to settle in advance the respective rights and liabilities of the husband and wife to property and maintenance in the event of a divorce, and may also settle the respective rights of one party in the event of the death of the other. While the enforceability of a prenuptial agreement often gets publicity in divorces of wealthy individuals, these agreements are no longer the provinces of the rich and famous. The prenuptial agreement may be particularly appropriate in the following situations: (1) in advance of a second marriage as a means to protect inheritances for children from a prior marriage; (2) to preclude the nastier aspects of divorce which a person has experienced in a prior marriage or which a person has fears after hearing the horror stories told by others; (3) to prevent the bitterness of a prior divorce; (4) in marriages where each person is beginning a career with potential for accumulating wealth but lacks a current nest egg so that each can protect separate assets; and (5) and in marriages involving heirs to family businesses and fortunes, or anticipated inheritances or beneficial rights under trusts established by family members. Furthermore, business owners, including professionals and members of

58

|

UPTOWN LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

partnerships and limited liability companies, use these agreements to protect their businesses/practices from spousal claims in divorce or probate proceedings, and also to protect spouses not involved in those businesses from the claims of business creditors. Protecting the Family Assets A “simple” prenuptial agreement which may be significant for a younger family member is one that protects only the family business or other family assets by confirming that any interest in the business or other family assets received by that family member by gift or inheritance, as well as any income from, or growth of, those assets, will remain family assets, free from claims of the spouse. Prompted by high divorce rates and the phenomena of serial marriages and dual-income families, couples seek a practical way to deal with their property and incomes in the advance of a possible divorce. Many young couples today are even looking for ways to protect their intellectual property. The divorce process, which becomes laden with emotion, often makes objective and reasoned decisions impossible. In addition, the perceived high cost of protracted divorce litigation creates an air of pragmatism when it comes to the bonds of matrimony.

By Bruce E. Friedman, Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C. A Desire for Financial Order--Not a Lack of Trust Despite the usefulness of a prenuptial agreement, a party’s request for such an agreement will often result in an emotional response from his or her fiancé and also conflict because the agreement contemplates the failure of the marriage before it begins. However, if the requesting party can convey that it is not a lack of love or trust that motivates the request, but a desire for financial order and continuity that will benefit both parties, a prenuptial agreement can, in fact, add to the solidarity of a marriage. Even today, discussions about money are often seen as a taboo topic, yet, discussions about money, spending, saving and financial goals, can enhance trust. Although property distribution laws in the event of divorce and death vary from state to state, generally, a valid prenuptial agreement will allow a couple to avoid state laws governing property division in such circumstances. For example, equitable distribution states like Missouri do not require an equal division of marital property, and allow certain exceptions for separate (nonmarital) property, such as property owned before the marriage or property acquired during the marriage by gift or inheritance (so long as that property has not been commingled with marital property). However, because of ever changing judicial interpretations and applications of the laws controlling property issues in divorce, many legal principles have developed which permit a court to “transmute” separate property into marital property, even if the title to such property remains in the sole name of one party. As a result, a party may be successful in claiming a marital interest in premarital, gifted and inherited property, including real estate, bank accounts, publicly traded and closely-held stocks, pensions and other retirement funds and business interests. A well drafted premarital agreement can block such a claim. Frequently, divorce and probate litigation may involve a family business. Issues often arise as to whether the increase in value of a business interest is property subject to division, even if the business interest was acquired before the marriage or after the marriage by gift or inheritance. This is why knowledgeable family business owners often insist that their children invoke the protection of a prenuptial agreement. Although it is unclear whether such an agreement can insulate the financial affairs of a family business from the invasive discovery process that often accompanies a domestic proceeding, a prenuptial agreement can help prevent the disruption of a business if a divorce or death occurs. Prenuptial Agreement--A Preventive Measure Nevertheless, a prenuptial agreement cannot be viewed as an insurance policy against subsequent litigation or successful claims against property and income. Rather, it should be viewed as a preventive measure. A spouse who is eager to marry may enter into a contract that becomes less palatable over time, as circumstances change, the marriage sours or a wealthy spouse dies. As a result, challenges to the validity and enforceability of prenuptial agreements frequently occur. Missouri has not enacted statutes governing the validity of prenuptial agreements. However, Missouri courts have developed some standards

for determining the validity and enforceability of these agreements. If an agreement is entered into freely, fairly, knowingly, with understanding, in good faith and with full financial disclosure, it will be upheld by the court so long as it is also determined to be conscionable. As a result, the courts have the discretion to invalidate a prenuptial agreement. Yet, a properly negotiated and drafted agreement is likely to be found valid and enforceable. Counsel should be experienced with matrimonial laws, and the drafting and negotiating these agreements. Allow Ample Time for Review and Signing While counsel cannot give an ironclad guarantee that a prenuptial agreement will withstand a future challenge, such agreements serve a useful purpose and are frequently upheld by the courts. A person seeking a prenuptial agreement can take certain practical steps to increase the likelihood that the agreement will be enforced. First, the parties should allow ample time in advance of the wedding to finalize the details of the agreement; the longer the time between the start of the negotiation process and the wedding the better. Also, each party must make full financial disclosure, and should obtain the advice of independent counsel specializing in matrimonial law and probate law. While the law does not require that each party have counsel, it is highly recommended, since a frequent basis for challenge is a lack of knowledge or understanding of the meaning and consequences of the agreement. The attorney cannot represent both parties. Further, memorializing the signing of the agreement through video recording or use of court stenographer may help defend against later claims of fraud, duress, coercion, or a lack of understanding of the terms. Finally, to avoid a breach of contract claim, a spouse doing estate planning after the agreement is signed should make sure that the terms of the estate planning documents comply with the provisions of the prenuptial agreement. Whether to use a prenuptial agreement is a personal decision. Marriage today is an economic partnership, as well as an emotional one. The cost of a prenuptial agreement depends on the nature, amount and complexity of the assets involved, as well as the extent of the negotiation and drafting process. In is not unusual to see agreements addressing matters such as spousal trusts, life insurance trusts, long term care insurance, the doctrine of necessaries and legal obligations under the Immigration Laws. The cost, which can include the fees of attorneys, accountants and qualified appraisers, may be anywhere from $3,500 to many thousands of dollars. But a properly drafted agreement is worth every penny. It may prevent a protracted divorce that culminates in an unanticipated award of maintenance (spousal support) or an unexpected and unfair division of valuable family and personal assets, or both. Your finances might not be top of mind right now; there are engagement parties, wedding plans, honeymoon plans, etc., but you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take the time now to assess your current and future financial well-being. The two most important concepts to keep in mind are respect and transparency. You should respect yourself, as it relates to finances, and you deserve the respect of your partner and wealth advisors. You should also expect transparency from your partner and from all of your financial providers. Knowledge is power and you can’t be empowered unless all of those with whom you deal are open and honest with you. I suggest finding a time to sit quietly and review your current financial statements, while following these important steps. 1. Take a snapshot of your current holdings. Make a list on one side of your assets including savings, investment accounts and real estate. On the other side, put down your debts, including credit card debt, mortgages and home equity lines of credit. Subtract your debts from your total holdings to get a quick idea of your net worth. If it is significant, then you may want to talk to an attorney about whether to obtain a prenuptial agreement. You will want to, at the very least, segregate assets that you have inherited and have those set aside as non-marital assets. 2. Improve your financial literacy. You need to have at least a basic understanding of financial terminology and investing concepts. There are multiple blogs on the web that talk about women and investing. Find a site that appeals to you and keep in mind the following: • Saving and investing are different concepts and serve different purposes – you need both. • Do you have retirement assets? A retirement goal? If not, why? • How your assets are titled is a key issue both now and when you are married. How are your assets titled? Do you have beneficiary designations? Do you have a trust? If not, talk to an attorney about the advantages of a trust – either for you alone, or a joint trust after you are married. • Learn about how your current investment provider charges you for his or her services. Are there commissions? Loads? 12(b)(1) fees? Have you considered a trust company? Trust companies are fiduciaries and are required by law to always act in your best interest.

• At least once a year, you need to ask your current provider what you have paid him or her, and what your performance has been? 3. Before you marry, you should have many open and frank discussions with your partner about finances and spending. There are spenders and there are savers. The greater the differences between you and your spouse over spending and saving, the greater the chance that there will be arguments regarding money after you are married. Work on creating a plan or an arrangement that you both can live with as it relates to larger purchases. Plan on having regularly scheduled meetings to talk about family finances. See if you can agree on some common financial goals. The more you feel like a “team” and work towards goals together, the more rewarding the successes will feel. 4. Ask about debt and student loans. You must ask your partner if he or she has student loans. If he or she has a high student loan balance that can affect when and how you could purchase a home. If you decide to file joint tax returns and as a result your income goes up substantially, then the obligor’s loan payment can also go up substantially. 5. Talk with your accountant about your taxes. Should you file jointly or separately? If filing jointly, your income tax bracket could go up substantially and you could also lose the right to contribute to some individual retirement accounts. 6. Get a handle on household finances. Once you are married you should know what each of you earn as well as the costs of running the household. You should know what each of you has in the way of investments and retirement accounts. You should know what the total amount of debt is in the household as well as every type of insurance policy that exists. Why? While most of us have heard the statistic that about 50% of marriages end in divorce, but less well known is that the average age of a widow is 55 and that by 75 years old 75% of married women are widowed. Even if your intended is “old school” and insists on being the “provider,” a recent Prudential research study found that 95% of women will be their family’s primary financial decision maker at some point in their lives. With all of this said, there’s no time like the present to be ready. It’s your future. Go own it.
