WHITNEY

Whitney Morse, Artistic Director, The Sharon® L. Morse Performing Arts Center

The New Season at The Sharon®: I know we were excited to announce some highlights from our upcoming season at The Sharon®, so I hope you all were excited to read about it in The Mother’s Day Edition of The Villages Daily Sun. I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I am a big fan of the theatre; so many of the acts coming next season that I am excited about are theatrical. We have L.A. Theatre Works coming back to us with the play Steel Magnolias. You may remember them from their heart wrenching performance of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop this last February. We also have some very funny Broadway musicals coming as well. Get ready to ROCK with Rock of Ages, a good time with big hair 80’s musical. You are sure to laugh with Spamalot coming to The Sharon. It is a riotous comedy based on the works of Monty Python – a personal favorite of mine. We are also bringing you our first piece of Shakespeare from Aquila Theatre. I have had my eye on this company for a few years and this year they are touring one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Their company has an uncanny knack for taking classical text and making them hip, fresh and most importantly - accessible. I can’t think of a better company to christen our stage for The Bard himself. Now this may surprise some of our Scoop readers but my tastes do extend beyond “the wicked stage” as they say. I am also a huge music lover, and one of my absolute favorite singer/ songwriters is coming to The Sharon – Mr. American Pie himself – Don McLean! I actually drove all the way to St. Petersburg when I was 17 years old to see him live in concert and waited in a long line of Don lovers to meet him and get his autograph. I cannot wait to have him here in The Villages. As you can see, we have a lot to look forward to here at The Sharon, and this is just a small taste. For a look at all of our announced shows check out our website at www.TheSharon.com. See you at The Sharon!

Usher Appreciation Night In the morning, 130 ushers joined Rebecca Morse, House Manager, and Sean Graham, frequent Manager on Duty, in practicing for fire evacuations and emergency protocols at The Sharon. They were joined by The Sharon technical crew and The Villages Fire Department to practice safety procedures in the venue. In the afternoon, the ushers were treated to lunch in the lobby where Rebecca and Heather had organized catering by Mojo’s Grill. At this time Rebecca and Sean handed out The Sharon's first THREE YEAR PINS to ushers that have served since April 30, 2015 to May 22, 2018! Next was the “Blue Glove Award” which is handed out annually to the usher with the most creative suggestion or solution in the house management world. This year the Blue glove was tied! It went to Jim Peterson and Jane Nelson. Jim Peterson won the Blue Glove for reorganizing the way balcony ushers are utilized and Jane Nelson won the Blue Glove for her Numerical Version of the Usher Stool Location list. Next, the ushers all had an opportunity to showcase their talents! There were showcases from the ukulele club, singers, comedians, songwriters, published authors, clowns, and more!
