What’s in a name? My name is Erik Ikea, Erik is a German name, which my father probably got from the German missionaries back home. You see, my father grew up in the outer islands of chuuk, during a time when the missionaries were spreading word of The Bible and Jesus Christ in the third world countries. My father spent much of his time around these Germans, where he heard the name “Erik”, which he thought was a good nae for a son.

Sensory Experiences The year is 2013, on the island of Oahu in Hawaii & it is the first day of the year. Happy New Years! People are still up, although it is twelve o’clock in the morning. I hear fireworks from every direction from the neighbor’s houses, all the way to the other side of town. I can smell smoke and powder used for fireworks. My ears are overwhelmed with all the sounds of fireworks, horns, & makeshift paper poppers.

A quality Personality An amazing quality of mine is my reflex. Because, sometimes I can sense something before it happens. I notice things other people don’t and I react as quick as I can. I think the reason I have a quick reflex is because I always observe my surroundings.

Page |9

Color your world Why is blue a sad color? I think blue is not a sad color, because it always makes me happy. It’s the color of the sky, which is anything but sad. It is a cool color not a sad one, so I think it should be known as a happy color not a sad one. In case you don’t know blue is my favorite color. I believe it to be the most beautiful color out there, and it looks good. Also, because it is a cool color and I like keeping cool.

Room sweet room My room is unique, anybody can tell what kind of person I am just by looking at my room. For instance, the unfolded clothes in the basket tells that sometimes l get lazy and I don't want to fold clothes. I own videogames because if I am not able to go play outside I can just stay in my room and play basketball all day without fear of a single drop of rain. All in all, my room is uniquely me it is what makes me happy and it is also where I feel safe and secure.

P a g e | 12

Extended metaphors As an animal I could be the best Koala ever. A Koala couldn’t beat me at sleeping, I sleep every chance I get. Then when I wake I usually eat, I could probably beat a koala at that too. Then there’s the fact that I attract attention just like a koala attracts by being cute. As a food I am best represented as a pizza. A perfectly shaped food, that looks as good as it is. Its’ multiple layers are some things I also have, I’m cool and composed on the outside but on the inside I’m nervous as heck. (layers) As an appliance I’m a dishwasher. I’m literally the one who does most of the dishwashing in the house anyways. Because we don’t use a dishwasher. “I am the dishwasher!”

The ultimate allpurpose excuse Hello Mr./Mrs. I have a reasonable excuse for my tardiness today. I was on my way to class when I forgot my bag, you see. So, I went back to find it. On my way I saw some thugs about to commit Grand Theft Auto. At first, I didn’t want to get involved, but then I realized it was your car. I had to do something, quick! So, I knocked out all the thugs and brought them to the police station. Then I fixed the engine they stripped, replaced all the parts, and fixed all the windows they broke. If you looked to see your car, you wouldn’t even notice that it had been through all that.

Telling tales As a child growing up in a Chuukese household I always heard stories of black magic. Everyone in my family believed it existed, they even claim to have seen it or experienced it. One tale they would tell is about a boy who would not listen. So, one day a kid wanted to eat fish, but his mother said “No!” because it was late, and the Monstrous Octopus came out at night. But the boy wouldn’t listen and kept begging his mother. The mother felt bad for her son so she decided to try and go catch fish. The son watched from the shoreline as his mother fished, then suddenly the mother screamed. “son learn to take care of yourself, the octopus got me” she screamed. The young boy watched in tears as his mother got dragged into the deep by the giant octopus. “This is why you should listen to your parents” they would always say.

Unfinished sentences 1. I usually worry about getting old. I don’t’ want to get old, because the older you get the uglier you get. So, I want to be young forever. I don’t ever want to get old. 2. I feel angry when people are being disrespectful. I don’t like disrespectful people; didn’t their parents ever teach them manners? They think they can do anything they want and get away with it. They make me angry. 3. I’m moody when I don’t get enough sleep. I usually go from excited to tired quick. Because I’m exhausted from not having enough sleep. I usually end up asleep in class when I’m moody. 4. I’m happiest when I get money. I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind. I know they say money is the root of all evil but I’m just trying to survive over here. So, of course I’m happy when I get money. 5. I feel confident when I’m presenting. I feel confident when I am presenting because, I get a rush of adrenaline which makes me forget about being nervous. I always speak loud and clear and try to present professionally. 6. I feel frustrated when I do work. I hate to admit it, but I’m a bit lazy. I realized this as I was making this list. Because turns out, I really do feel frustrated when I need to do work. 7. I feel depressed when others feel depressed. I like making people happy so, it makes me feel bad that they’re not happy. I usually end up staying away from that depressed person or end up trying to cheer them up. 8. I am comfortable when I am in my bed, just chilling and feeling great. We all must admit that laying in our beds covered in blankets and pillows is relaxing. It’s like laying on a cloud on a peaceful calm night. Very Relaxing! 9. I am nervous when I must talk to someone better than me. I look up to people better than me. I always feel like something I can learn from them. So, I end up not wanting to look like a fool in front of them & act perfect. Therefore, I’m always nervous around people better than me. 10. I feel sentimental when people accomplish things. When goals are accomplished, that’s when people are happy and overjoyed. Watching people be happy, makes me sentimental and I always feel happy for them.

P a g e | 17

Personal symbol An object that has special meaning to me is my hiking bag. I got the hiking bag from my dad before he passed away. It’s kind of like a memento and a hand me down at the same time. I will always treasure it, because it has sentimental value to me. To any other person the bag will just be a bag. But to me the bag is the greatest gift my dad has ever given me.

A mysterious place When I was in Hawaii, I discovered an exotic place. It was in the afternoon & I was riding the city bus home when I got off at the wrong stop. The place was familiar, so I thought it was close to my home, I was wrong. Once the bus left, it didn’t take long for me to realize my mistake. As I looked around I noticed that there were many strange people around. First, I saw a man huddled in a corner looking drunk. Then, I saw some more drunk people asking for money, I told them I was broke. The road was dusty, and the sidewalk was stained, the people smelled like they haven’t taken a bath in months. I instantly went back to the busstop and stayed there for an hour waiting for the next bus.

A day in the life It was the first day of school as he walked in the room he felt tense and exhausted, “all my classmates are boring" he sighed. He looked around and saw familiar faces, some said "hi" and some just nodded. But some of the people he had never seen before, like the girl with the hijab whom he'd never seen before. He decided to sit next to her, "only because this is the only open seat" he thought. Little did he know that the next days sitting with her would be special, because later she would become an important part of his life.

Flashback When I was younger, I lived in a wonderful neighborhood. All my neighborhood friends were cool & nice. They believed in acting mature, which was amazing because most kids nowadays don’t want to act mature. But these kids grew up with many hardships in their lives and they quickly had to grow up. It was amazing because in school bullying was not cool and whoever was caught bullying was usually taught a lesson. They never embarrassed anyone. This is great because here on Guam, kids always embarrass each other and it’s just childish. Instead, they would all act like adults and encourage you to keep going. It was a great environment and I wish I stayed longer there.

Remembrance of things present The things that make me who I am today is all my hobbies and activities, these hobbies influence my daily life. For example, because of social media I will always spend an hour wasted being on my phone or laptop. In contrast, my love for basketball makes me take every chance I can get, to go play basketball but it also makes me stay out a little later than usual. My friends help influence my present-day life because whatever they do, I usually end up doing too. We might get into some trouble sometimes, but we also create everlasting memories that we can cherish when we are older and wiser. Lastly, my family effects my presentday life by guiding me towards goals which are more achievable and realistic as I tend to daydream every so often causing me to fantasize greatly about my future, but one must always remember that life starts at the bottom and then we can slowly make our way up to the top.

P a g e | 26

As time goes byebye As time passes by, people often regret not doing things a certain way. Such is the way of life, during our present time we make choices that cannot be remade. Life gives us a million choices but all at one time. So, people should not worry about making the wrong choices because statistically speaking no matter what you do; you will end up making a wrong choice eventually and it will happen again and again. If a person had the power to turn back time and fix his/her past mistake it will only give birth to new problems in the future. Because reality is balanced you cannot have good without bad just as you cannot have light without shadows. In conclusion I don't dwell on the past and therefore I don't regret any mistakes I may have made in the past and now I am currently focused on the present and what needs to be done for a good future outcome.

Demoralized Tired Stressed Independent Slow Mischievous Strong

Free Verse: I used to be motivated when I was younger. But now not so much, I’m just trying to live longer. Used to always have energy, now it’s a struggle to even have any. Always stayed happy, now I’m always stressed needing more caffeine. I used to depend on others, now I don’t depend on those I call brothers. I worked quick as opposed to now I just watch the clock go tick. Stayed out of trouble, nowadays it seems I’m looking for it and making it double. But then again, I was always weak, but now I’m getting stronger every week!

Picture this This photograph is called ‘a migrant mother’ by Dorothy Lange. This photo always interested me, because of the influence it had on Americans. People were struggling because of the stock market crash. Some were affected by the dust bowl. So, most Americans could relate to the photo. I think this photo is amazing!

P a g e | 32

Look who I look up to Lebron James: I look up to Lebron James as an idol. He made his dream come true by working hard every-day during his Highschool years. Soon after he went to college and continued working on his dream to become a professional basketball player. Now, he has become the greatest basketball player right now. Martin Luther King: I look up to Martin Luther King because despite what people said he stood up for what he believed in. He was a man who couldn’t just stand around and watch as people were treated unfairly. So, he became a leader started a movement and now years after his death his dream is slowly becoming reality. Mahatma Gandhi: Mahatma Gandhi was a wise man. He fought for what he believed in without actually fighting. This alone makes me look up to him.

Remembering the child My aunt told me her favorite story about me. It was when I was trying to ride a bike. She said I was about five years old, when my mom bought me a bike with training wheels. I was always scared to ride the bike, and someone had to hold me and lead me around. But the training wheels were still on. Soon I could ride the bike with training wheels. Then, my uncle told me it was time to take off the training wheels and I was afraid. I tried it once but was too scared and never rode the bike ever again.

One medium suitcase In the medium suitcase I will pack all my expensive clothes. My siblings like to wear my clothes, so I will take them because they’re mine and they have their own. It’s my style not theirs. So, I will take these with me, I know I can purchase these clothes somewhere but why, when I can save for new released clothes or shoes?

P a g e | 35

The perfect present The perfect present to me would be the feeling of accomplishment. I want to feel like I deserve the grade I got. I want to feel like I worked super hard to graduate. (which I did) I also want to be assured that life from now on will be fun. I don’t want to live a boring adult life. I want to know if it is possible to be older and still have plenty of time to do my hobbies and activities.

P a g e | 36

Memorable event A memorable event for me was the dollar carnival. It was fun and filled with new experiences. My friends decided to all meet up at one spot before we went to the carnival and we all chilled. It was a half day, so we had plenty of time before the dollar carnival, the longer we stayed the more people there were. To the point where we all couldn’t fit in the house. There was already plenty of us as we started waling to school. We walked in the gate and we were ready to eat some food and have some fun. The night went on and my cousin threw up for some reason and passed out, so I had to take him home. But, I came back and enjoyed the rest of the evening.

hoW to… The following is an instruction on how to pick up girls. 1) Be good looking if not, then have good style. 2) Smell good, no girl wants a dude who smells like gym socks. So please stay fresh. 3) Be confident: Confident is key, because chances are, she is just as shy as you are. Also, you have to beat every other guy who is not confident enough. 4) Don’t be desperate. Bruh! Don’t be messaging her if she doesn’t want to reply. Messaging should only be used to set a date, not for a conversation. 5) Be You! Girls can tell if you’re a fake.

P a g e | 38

Always say never  Ice Skating  Not sleeping  Procrastinating a major project  Not talking to the girl  Smoking This list is composed of things I never want to do again. I hate ice skating because when I was younger I would always fall and I would get scared someone would slide over my fingers. I will never stay up an entire night ever again after I write this project, it’s a waste of energy that could’ve been done in small amounts over time. I don’t ever want to procrastinate a major project like I did with this one, because it causes lack of sleep and tiredness.

P a g e | 39

Are you hungry? One word for you, Pizza! It is one of the greatest inventions ever. It was in Italy where it was first created, Americans called them meat pies. Soon after the dish became really popular, street vendors were selling them all over major cities. Because they’re easy to make and very tasty. The pizza was also great for busy people since it was quick and easy to eat. Nowadays pizza is a global food. With popular food franchises selling them all over the world. My favorite pizza comes from a pizza place called Papa John’s. The pizza there is great in my opinion. My favorite is the peperoni pizza.

Where i’m from I am from a life filled with colour, From the chocolate brown that is my skin. I am from the sunshine yellow of my mother’s laugh, From the red and white of my bros favourite football shirt. Annual report A year ago, wasn’t a good time for me. I was doing things I shouldn’t have been doing in places where I shouldn’t be. I think I’m better off now than I was a year ago. Now, I’m not worried about what people in school think of me. Because I’m going to be graduating soon and I might never see most of these people ever again. Now I’m more confident because I’m about to complete Highschool which is a big accomplishment for me. I’m over the things that I used to always do a year ago, I’m now focusing on much bigger things. Soon I will be free to be on my own which makes me feel great to have all that freedom, rather than a year ago when I was restricted to do some things do to age and my parents!

Lessons I learned after it was too late A lesson I learned after it was too late was to not take something that is not yours. It was a few years ago when I was caught shoplifting in a store, it was a minor thing but my parents made a big fuss about it. I was very scared, because I’ve never been arrested before but the policemen were nice and helpful.

As you have read, these are some of the interesting things I have to share. One must come to the conclusion that the writer of this passage was a confident, outgoing young man. The person described in the autobiography “Erik Ikea is a student- athlete, who is lazy when it comes to school work although he has good potential. One may also come to the conclusion that the writer spent much time & hard work into this piece of writing.
