Kaka vs. Kea

Long long ago before sky scrapers were invented and way before Albert Einstein was born ,there was a land filled with mountains ,lush green forest and unique species. That land was and is now named New Zealand/Aotearoa .Before Aotearoa was filled with mountains as cold as popsicles , forests and lakes their was Papatunuki earth mother and Ranganui sky father that loved each other too much .They had seven children ,one of those children was called Tane god of the forest. Many years after Tane was born ,he created

forests and lakes to cover and keep Papatunuki warm and Tane put a blue cloak up on Ranganui to keep him also warm as toast. In the forest Tane created many different species which they are all native to New Zealand today .He created many species such as the Kaka and the Kakas cousin Kea .The Kea which was more intelligent and good looking[to his opinion] than the Kaka had olivey ,brown coloured body ,touches of peachy orange under his wings and on his cheeks. And he also had sharp talons and a very sharp

beak. Along with his not so intelligent cousin the Kaka was a plain dull brown flightless bird[that looked like Kentucky fried chicken]with fat stubby feet along with a blunt short beak .Both of these species were very cheeky and shared the same habitat with other native species. One morning as dawn broke through the sky ,Kaka got summoned to Tane .Kaka told Tane that he was tired of Kea showing off to him and the other animals that lived in the bush. Tane sighed and said in a low expression voice “We’ve talked about this before Kaka, but I’ve been thinking that we should ask the other animals what they think of you and Kea ,to see which one of you deserves to live in the forest. So Tane walked off to find the other animals leaving Kaka lonesome. Tane gathered the other animals except for Kaka and Kea under a willow tree that Tane had planted. There were lots of different opinions from many different animals but after a very long discussion they had made a decision

.Tane went to find Kaka anxiously waiting where Tane had left him. Next he

found Kea under a Sycamore tree dreaming into the sunny afternoon sun. Kea was startled to find Tane asking him to come to an announcement. So Tane ,Kaka and keas walking along side by side to where the announcement was held. Tane then quicker than Jack Robinson stood in front of the two cheeky cousins ,with the other animals surrounding them .Kea stood puzzled while Kaka stood nervously .Tane then spoke, while the other animals stood and stared at his words .”The fauna and I come up with

a decision to solve this jealousy problem”. “Kea I’ve heard that you show off and think of yourself as better than the other animals. Keas puzzled look turned into anger ,[his peachy cheeks turned into flame red].”Who told you this load of crud said Kea angrily .Tane just ignored Keas cursing and talked to Kaka .”Kaka the animals thought that you are a quiet innocent bird ,but they also think you would not be capable to help out in the forest said Tane sternly .Kaka just stood at Tane blankly and nodded to his words. There was

silence for a split second ,not one animal opened their beak or mouth. Then Tane announced “I’m sorry to say ,that all the animals that I have found have said that Kea is an arrogant ,selfish parrot not respecting other forest creatures .And they also think of yourself to much and not worrying about others around you .Tane then said an example –“Kereru I heard that you had worms in your mouth to give it to your children and then Kea snatched them out of your beak and ate them ferociously and then walked into the mists of

the forest. Kereru then sobbed loudly .Tane heard everything he needed to know and declared that Kea should be banished to the mountains and remain the rest of your days alone. Kea then stormed and yelled you will have to pay for my mistakes someday Kaka’’. Then in a thick black cloud of dust Kea had vanished to the mountains.Tane then turned to Kaka ‘’Because you’re the innocent one I’m going to make you a bird that is useful in my forests . You will also have to stretch your wings to get the power to fly and you will have to bend your beak to scratch at the bark on the trees to get

the grubs and insects. Quicker than the speed of light all Kaka had sharp

talons, bent beak and powerful wings to fly. Kaka felt a tingling sensation all over his body. He was now a bird that he always wanted to be. He thanked Tane more than he needed to .Then the sky filled with Kaka squawking admiring each adaptive feature on themselves. They were swooping through clouds like obstacles, experimenting their new wings. But when Kaka was exhausted he landed where the discussion was held and found Tane nowhere to be seen .Tears of thankfulness dribbled down his feathery cheek as he looked up into the sky thankful for what tane had done for him. Three years passed since the big discussion and the transformation to the Kaka. The sun glistened on kakas head while he was having an afternoon

snooze under the Kowhai tree. But then he was startled by an unpleasant surprise. Kereru giggling to his heart’s content, quickly vanishing into the clouds before Kaka realises what the unpleasant surprise was Kaka looked all distances to see who had put their waste on his head .Kaka rushed to the nearest stream where he heard a peculiar noise. His cousin in the high mountains was trying to threaten Kaka by saying its name”Keaaaaaaa”screeched from the mountains to the forest below. Kaka

now knows that someday Kea will come down and get him back .But that someday is yet to come. When Kea finished saying that he was better than Kaka, Kaka was washing his head thoroughly but the unpleasant present from Kereru, which could not come off. Then a little Fantail fluttered by and made circles around Kaka. ’What a beautiful shiny head you have Kaka said Fantail jealously’ ’Kaka was curious to why Fantail liked it ,but as Fantail left he couldn’t waste his precious time at something that other creatures liked

,then his tummy started groaning at Kaka ,it was requesting for something sweet to eat. Kaka then waddled off waddled off minding his own business through the hundred acre wood. Then something caught his beady eyes, fresh ripe berries hanging from the mistletoe .As quick as his legs could scatter he rushed and

used his sharp talons to get the rosy red berries. Before anybody else came

he scoffed them down as quick as he could. His taste buds tasting the red fleshy berries slipping down his throat. But because he was eating so ferociously ,he didn’t realise that the red juice was staining his feathery coat under his wings. While he was busy hovering the berries the sun rays were cutting through the forest and staining the Kakas cheeks. As Kaka finished his meal he heard footsteps coming closer and closer [crunching the thick foliage on the forest floor .Tanes words then popped out of his mouth and starting swaying into Kakas ears” Wow how I’m admiring your wings ,they are beautiful but how did you get them .Kaka looked at his reflection in the water, puzzled to how he got all these colours. Tane was

unsure himself and then said ‘’oh I was just walking past to head North to the alpines to see Kea .Kaka then waved Tane off and then headed in the opposite direction. Whenever he walked past one of the animals they all admired him of his colours. The ‘’ooooooooooos’’ and ‘’ahhhhhhs’’ flicked through his mind like a movie roll .Kaka then decided to lift his weight in the air and he headed towards the autumn sun hearing the Keas sound echoing in the background .He just smiled behind him a cheesy smile and flew like a

feather with the wind home . And from that day on Kaka remained in the forest with strong wings, sharp talons ,a bent beak and a colourful feathery cloak. While his not so happy cousin remained cheeky in the alpines in the cold ,regretting of what he did to make the forest animals unhappy Authors :ANNIE and JAIMIE
