JAMBAND Start Up Budget

Page 1

April 12, 2011 Dear DCGA Finance Committee, I‟m writing on behalf of the JAMBAND, the Joint Association of Musicians, Bands, and Appreciators of Noise at Denison. We were recently approved by the DCGA Rules Committee as an official student organization, eligible for student activity funds. Before discussing the somewhat technical request for funding, I‟d like to take a moment just to explain why we decided to found JAMBAND on our campus. When first coming to Denison, we were amazed at how, despite a large number of student musicians on campus, we have surprisingly few student bands. In exploring this problem, we‟ve come to see that this dearth stems from a lack of institutional support for student bands – in particular, a lack of networking and rehearsal space. JAMBAND is critical in addressing both of those deficits, the former issue requiring the resources and support of our student government. This, of course, is why we are here today. In this budget, we request the essential equipment to provide for student bands who would like to rehearse together on campus. Other solutions have proven inadequate: apartment and suite spaces are only available to upperclassmen, and rehearsal there can draw the resentment of quieter neighbors; the music department‟s equipment and space is available only to those involved in the department, barring many recreational musicians from access; most students don‟t have access to equipment to rehearse in existing common spaces on campus. This budget seeks to establish these resources so that all students can access them, and the equipment we‟ve selected was selected after pooling knowledge and research among both student and faculty members of JAMBAND. We know this equipment will last as a strong foundation for student musicians for many years to come. In the future, it would be wise for future presidents to explore expanding our role on campus. JAMBAND could increase its stock of less common instruments, or it could explore recording capabilities. This budget, though, is truly looking to establish a grounding which students can use to build a stronger and more present Denison music scene. The vision of JAMBAND is three-fold: (1.) to foster and strengthen Denison‟s intra-collegiate music scene, in turn bolstering campus identity and spirit, (2.) to create healthy, creative outlets for student expression that also allow students to interact meaningfully, and (3.) to interface with programming organizations, expanding opportunities to showcase the talent of Denison musicians. These goals are consistent with the missions of both the DCGA and Denison University as a whole. I‟d also like to include a quick statement about our quotes: they are all from Guitar Guys, a local and independently-owned music shop in Heath, OH – minutes from our campus. There are several advantages to doing business locally: first, we are able to build a relationship with our supplier in case we ever need support regarding repairs and replacements; second, the money spent at Guitar Guys will remain in our larger local community, where it will be reinvested to the benefit of other community members; and third, we are supporting a business that is owned in part by one of our own Denison alumni, Rick Parker „72. If you have any questions regarding the quotes, please feel free to contact him or the other owners at (740) 522-0277. They have been exceedingly helpful thus far, and I‟m sure they would happily address any questions you may have. Thank you so much for taking the time to review our budget, and we hope to see you at JAMFEST (JAMBAND‟s Annual Music Festival Exhibiting Student Talent) on Friday, April 22! Equipment Purchases 1st Item: Reason:

Guitar and Bass Capabilities Guitar and bass amplifiers are essential for electric guitars and basses – staple instruments in most contemporary music. These amplifiers were selected for their versatility and quality as well as their relative affordability with recommendations from both student musicians and music faculty.

The Blackstar HT40 is an industry standard tube amplifier that is most notable for its versatile sound, able to produce both classic British and American distortion tones. Blackstar was started by a group of engineers that worked for Marshall, perhaps the best known amplifier production company. All in all, it is a terrific amp that will serve many Denison generations well. We have requested two because much of contemporary music features two guitars. Further, most of the musicians in JAMBAND are guitarists, and being able to feature two guitarists at a time would better ensure that everyone gets a chance to participate in jam sessions.

The Fender Rumble 350, similarly, is an industry standard bass amp. It pumps out enough sound so that it will not need additional amplification at smaller concerts. The wattage is higher on this amp than the guitar amp simply because low frequencies require more amplification to be audible. This amplifier will last many years as an essential piece of JAMBAND equipment. 15+ years No JAMBAND Office, 4th Floor Slayter From Guitar Guys in Heath, OH

PA Capabilities In order to have performances on A-Quad or in Residence Halls, personal amplification is required for vocals and wind/string instruments. This setup was recommended by the experts at Guitar Guys to enable smaller performances, and the recommendation was

DCGA Finance Budget Request Form 2010-2011 reinforced by music faculty consulted.

This setup would enable a student band to perform at a campus event (such as social events or fundraisers). The Peavey XR8600 was selected for its midrange power output as well as its intuitive and user-friendly interface, to ensure that any and all student musicians will be able to operate it themselves without additional assistance.

Two Peavey PR15 speakers will provide enough sound for most outdoor or indoor gigs, and three Peavey 12M monitors will allow musicians to hear themselves during these gigs. All these speakers are easily transportable, making them ideal for small gigs anywhere on (or off) campus.

Shure SM58â€&#x;s are the industry stand dynamic microphone, best known due to for their affordability and unparalleled endurance. Two SM57â€&#x;s (condenser microphones) can be used for wind or string instruments, the subtleties of which would be lost on dynamic microphones.

It is important for JAMBAND to have its own setup for three key reasons: first, this setup will be used for rehearsals so that vocalists and instrumentalists can hear themselves; second, this reduces dependence on RedTech for smaller gigs and reduces fees that would have to be paid to RedTech; third, a simple and intuitive setup does not exist on campus at this point, and it is essential that JAMBAND have a system that the musicians themselves can operate. 15+ Years No JAMBAND Office, 4th Floor Slayter From Guitar Guys in Heath, OH Qty 1 2 2 3 2

Drums are another staple of much contemporary music, and often the lack of a drum set is the biggest barrier to students forming a full band. They are difficult to transport. This setup was compiled with input from student musicians, music faculty, and the staff at Guitar Guys. It will meet our musical needs and withstand the test of time.

Weâ€&#x;re also requesting hard cases for storage to ensure that the drums can truly last years and years with only minor upkeep costs. 15+ years Yes JAMBAND Office, 4th Floor Slayter From Guitar Guys in Heath, OH

Keyboard Capabilities Many musical groups incorporate keyboards, whether as synthesizers or as a stand-in for piano. This setup was selected for its versatility and relative affordability.

The Korg M50 is a powerful keyboard in that its broad sound bank can emulate acoustic instruments as well as produce quality synth sounds and effects. Rather than purchase two separate keyboards, we consolidate our needs into a single keyboard. This, like everything else in the budget, is a piece of equipment built to last many years. It has weighted keys, giving it the same feel as an acoustic piano.

Events 1st Event:

JAMFEST

Reason:

JAMFEST is JAMBANDâ€&#x;s Annual Music Festival Exhibiting Student Talent. It is a music festival on East Quad that will run from 4:30pm to 8:30pm, featuring as many as ten different student musical groups. The only expense we anticipate are to cover sound from RedTech. Our PA will not suffice for such a large event.

JAMFEST will feature such acts as Koala Funk, the 23 Trio, Potroast, the Electrines, the Swingless Angels, Seed City, and more. It is open to the entire campus, and indeed the music is being brought to the people to ensure attendance. It should be an excellent capstone event to the year. $640 from RedTech Live Sound Allocated 640.00
