Program description
Mary Rice Centre (MRC) is a transitional centre providing services for children with special needs and their families from Nairobi’s Kibera slum. The Centre offers opportunities for education, training, social integration and rehabilitative care. Children are supported to achieve independence with personal care and to acquire literacy, numeracy and communication skills. Where possible, the goal is to transition students into mainstream schooling or vocational education.
For the parents and guardians of children living with disability in an environment such as the Kibera slum, the challenges are enormous. MRC conducts workshops to assist caregivers to acquire the skills needed to care for their children. Training is also provided to enable parents to acquire income generating skills. Mary Rice Centre staff play an important role in advocating and networking for the rights and dignity of marginalised children and people with disability.

2019 ERFA funding will contribute to provision of • learning materials, games and sporting equipment • training materials, equipment and beads for students undertaking pre-vocational training • equipment, medications and assistive device training for children with disabilities • nutritional support for students including their main meal of the day
• community advocacy initiatives to raise awareness and support for people with disability • home monitoring of students and training for carers • vocational training and materials for parents and caregivers including kitchen gardens, dressmaking, embroidery, beading and knitting
