What are Iran’s intentions in the Western Hemisphere? Was Ahmadinejad’s January visit to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador political theater or something more ominous? Is Ahmadinejad exploiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s virulent antipathy toward the United States to advance Iran’s nuclear ambitions and launch terror attacks from the South American country? If that’s the harsh reality, then how will other leaders in the region react? Ahmadinejad’s Latin American tour only took in nations belonging to ALBA, the Venezuelan-led, eight-nation anti-U.S. bloc. On his first stop in Venezuela, Ahmadinejad and his host taunted the U.S. “devils” over “a big atomic bomb.” In Nicaragua, Ahmadinejad mocked Israel and condemned the killing of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. On his next stop, the Iranian president rallied Cubans against “imperialism and capitalism.” In Ecuador, Ahmadinejad defended his nuclear program. Three weeks later, Iran launched a Spanish-language satellite TV channel that airs news, documentaries and Iranian films 24 hours a day. The purpose is to broadcast “the truth about Iran and Iranian culture,” strengthen cultural ties between Iran and “friendly” Latin American nations and vex the United States and the West, according to reports published by Iran’s state-controlled media. Republican presidential hopefuls have slammed President Obama for not dealing with Ahmadinejad’s efforts to establish a beachhead in Latin America, but concerns transcend partisanship. In early January, it was Obama who expelled the Venezuelan consul in Miami, Livia Acosta Noguera. Her involvement with Iranian diplomats and Mexican computer hackers in a cyber-plot against the United States was exposed in a documentary aired in December 2011 by Univision. They had planned to attack U.S. government buildings and nuclear power plants. U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, has taken a leading role in the Senate to hold Iran’s feet to the fire and scrutinize Ahmadinejad’s Latin American activities. He’s pushing a Senate Banking Committee bill that calls for expelling Iran from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication. It would close off one of Iran’s only remaining channels for transacting international business. Menendez, who chairs the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, also held hearings in mid-February to study the economic, intelligence and diplomatic ramifications for the region of Ahmadinejad’s sway in Latin America. Menendez co-sponsored with Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois a measure to toughen sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank. The Senate unanimously approved it. The House passed it. In December, Obama signed it. In late January, U.S. National Intelligence chief James Clapper testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee considering the security threat posed by the Islamic republic. Iranian officials are “now willing to conduct an attack in the United States,” Clapper said. Also during the hearings, Jose Azel, a scholar of international affairs and Cuban and Cuban-American studies, raised a terrifying prospect: What if Iran intends to use Venezuela as a launching pad for terrorist attacks and a nuclear weapons strike against the U.S.? On Feb. 16, Ahmadinejad boasted of new developments in Iran’s nuclear program. He defiantly warned the European Union (EU) that tightening sanctions would force the oil-rich nation to cut off supplies to the EU. Iran also found a way to circumvent current banking sanctions and purchased 500,000 tons of wheat from Russia. Ahmadinejad insists his nuclear ambitions are for domestic energy purposes, but it’s suspected that Iran has the capability of militarizing its nuclear program.

And pretending that insurance companies will absorb the expense of covering contraceptive services at no extra charge in premiums for insureds or their employees is disingenuous. Catholic bishops are pushing for Congress to enact laws that would excuse any employer from providing insurance coverage for a medical treatment with which the employer disagreed as a matter of personal faith. Legislation has been introduced in Congress and in the Missouri General Assembly. U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri sponsored S. 1467, first introduced in August 2011. He rebooted the measure in mid-February as Amendment No. 1520 to a highway bill, S. 1813. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida sponsored the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, S. 2043. The House version of Blunt’s legislation, Respect for the Rights of Conscience Act, is House Resolution 1179. State Sen. John Lamping introduced similar legislation in the Missouri General Assembly. On Feb. 14, his as-yet-untitled bill, Senate Bill 749, cleared a Senate committee. It goes to the full Senate for debate. “We’re asking our folks to call their elected representatives and tell them to support these pieces of legislation,” said Bishop Robert Finn of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Not everyone is getting the message. About four in 10 U.S. residents haven’t heard about the controversy and weren’t aware of the rule requiring employers to provide contraceptive coverage, a recent Pew poll showed. “The whole healthcare initiative is very complex. We’re explaining it as best we can … in English and Spanish,” Finn said. The Catholic hierarchy, dioceses, individual parishes and faith groups have posted information on their respective Web sites, distributed it to their congregations and used the pulpit. Finn derided federal lawmakers for not reading the healthcare law before passing it in 2010. “That’s not acting responsibly,” he said. “Now, all the particulars are coming out that should have been dealt with.” Finn also denounced Obama’s modification as a gimmick. “The president said insurance companies would offer contraceptive coverage for free,” Finn said. “Nothing is free; someone has to pay. It’s just an accounting trick.” The birth control provision has prompted lawsuits and lawmakers in other states to consider measures broadening the exemptions. “These pieces of legislation are important for everyone,” Finn said. “This country has always had conscience protection.”

Objectives for the forum include the following: *Promote awareness in the Latino metropolitan area through community education and outreach. *Engage in multidisciplinary advocacy on behalf of immigrant rights. *Bridge the gap between immigrant and non-immigrant communities, thus reducing the misconceptions that might exist and creating more positive conditions essential to a well-functioning society. During the first hour, the forum will cover the cancellation of removal and prosecutorial discretion. The second hour will include a question-and-answer session. “We strive to empower the local immigrant community with the information they need to improve conditions for their families and strengthen local leadership, through our community education and outreach activities,” said event organizer Cristal Perez, who’s developing the forums as part of her capstone project to graduate as an organizational leader. “Such immigration clinics will provide assistance with immigration to people seeking to apply for eligibility through any of the relief (options) that are available.” As an incentive to get people to attend, participants will receive a free 30-minute free consultation regarding their personal case.
