Household support

Erewash Borough Council has used its local knowledge to make sure that its residents most in need have been helped to stay warm and keep a roof over their heads.

The council used nearly £200,000 of Household Support Fund money from the Department for Work and Pensions and Derbyshire County Council to help local residents with the rising cost of living. One project targeted residents on low incomes living in homes that are the hardest to heat. Nearly 400 households, including almost 290 with children, were given a one-off payment of £150 to help meet rising fuel costs over the winter, helping them to stay warm and well.

Funding was also targeted at those with Council Tax arrears in exceptional hardship and people at risk of becoming homeless. In all, the council helped 665 households.

Visit erewash.gov.uk/costofliving and derbyshire.gov.uk/costofliving for advice and help with the rising costs.

Councillor Paul Maginnis, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, says: “This funding has been so important and is a great example of partnership working to ensure the support reaches those most in need in our borough.”

For the young

Erewash Borough Council is backing a proactive mental health intervention to support vulnerable children and young people, funded by Derbyshire County Council Public Health.

The council has welcomed funding of just over £25,000 from Derbyshire County Council Public Health’s Erewash Children and Young People’s Mental Health Group. The funding will provide a one-toone Youth Mentoring Project led by the borough’s Sport and Health Development Team, driven by a trained youth mentor who will work with and support young people suffering with mental health issues.

The county’s Early Help Team will play a key role in identifying the most in need and vulnerable young people in the borough, and the positive and much needed intervention will be in place for 12 months.

The project will focus on helping the young people achieve and maintain strong mental health and will include a range of activities and signposting those taking part to other support services and community wellness help.

Health project

Two new community activator posts will help boost the health and wellbeing of residents in two areas of Erewash.

The two part time roles will be in place for 18 months to work within Long Eaton’s Petersham and Ilkeston’s Cotmanhay communities.

The posts are thanks to £48,320 grant funding from Derbyshire County Council Public Health for the project.

The Erewash Health and Wellbeing Partnership works across the borough and has helped several targeted areas.

A review of the service earlier this year highlighted the need to increase the resource in Long Eaton’s Petersham and Ilkeston’s Cotmanhay areas to continue the work for healthier communities.
