Please note we will be adding to the list of courses that satisfy the Erb Fellows curricular requirements as the program evolves

We are here to help! Please direct any questions you may have about the Erb Fellows program to erbfellows@umich.edu.You can also schedule an appointment with a council co-president.

FAQs

The below list of FAQs will be updated regularly - please refer to this list frequently!

Q: How do non-Ross students register for Ross courses?

A: Please refer to this reference guide from the Erb Fellows Council on how to register for Ross courses: Erb Fellows Ross Course Registration Information

Q: What if I can’t get into a course on this list?

A: If you are not able to enroll in a course due to restrictions or other limitations, we recommend that students reach out directly to the faculty member instructing the course. You may find it helpful to mention that you are an Erb Fellow when you email the instructor

Q: I noticed some of the courses offered are limited to seniors in Wolverine Access - do we need to wait to take those classes until senior year or is there potentially an override?

A: If you are not able to enroll in a specific course due to restrictions, we recommend that you reach out directly to the faculty member instructing the course Please mention in your email that you are an Erb Fellow

Q: Will the courses I take to fulfill my Erb Fellows requirement also fulfill the requirements of major and/or minor?

A: Some approved Erb Fellows courses may count towards your major or minor requirements - in these cases, the course will also count towards satisfying your Fellows requirement! Otherwise, fulfilling the requirements of your academic major or minor falls under the strict purview of your academic program. Questions about fulfilling your major or minor requirements must be addressed by your academic advisor

Q: I have taken or registered for a class that is not on the list of approved courses that includes content relevant to business and sustainability. Can this course “count” towards my 12-credit requirement?

A: We love to learn about new classes at the University of Michigan that include business sustainability-related content! If you would like us to consider allowing a course that you have taken to count towards your Erb Fellows curricular requirement, please submit a course substitution request (see page 14) Once your course request is submitted, please email erbfellows@umich edu in order for your request to be reviewed

Q: Is there a way I can learn more about which classes I should take or get recommendations from students who have already taken the classes?

A: Agreat way to discuss any concerns or inquiries about curricular requirements is to sign up for an advising appointment with an Erb Fellows Council Co-President.They are

a great source of information when it comes to choosing courses to take and for other program-related concerns. You can also view short statements on the next page of this guide from students who have shared their thoughts on some of the approved classes.

Q: Can I take a course pass/ fail or do I have to take it for a grade?

A: In general, Erb Fellows may only apply credits earned with a passing grade towards their Erb Fellows curricular requirement However, students may request permission to enroll in a class with the optional pass/fail if there are extenuating circumstances To request permission, please submit an Erb Fellows Course Approval request

Q: What are co-curricular events?

A: Erb Fellows co-curricular programming is designed to serve as a bridge between business and sustainability and to fill gaps not already filled by classroom learning

Co-curricular events include, but are not limited to, workshops facilitated by Erb graduate students, webinars with alumni and/or guest speakers, panel discussions, etc.

Student Experiences and Recommended Courses

*Please send any additional feedback or comments to Erb Fellows PeerAdvisors at erbfellows@umich edu

ENVIRON 361

“While I was taking ENV 361 (Psychology of Environmental Stewardship) I thought it was interesting to learn about mental models as well as durable behavior change, and it has hands down been the most applicable class to all of my other courses for Ross and PiTE. I reference back to my notes so often, not only did it make me think on deeper levels during the class but after it had ended as well ”

MO 355: Magnify Program

“I would recommend the Magnify spring program through the center for positive organizations If you like management or positive psychology and business it's for you! It is definitely the coolest academic thing I’ve done at Michigan!!”

STRATEGY400

“Strategies for Sustainable Development incorporates an array of topics in which Professor Hoffman offers great insights for class conversation. Discussions cover ideas from cultural and social drivers to the future of mobility and rethinking capitalism, with students from multiple academic backgrounds. With a variety of perspectives and concepts present in the classroom, there is something to pique each student's interest, and even more for all to learn”

BA/STRATEGY445:The Base of the Pyramid

“The Base of the Pyramid class with professor London has been one of my favorites this year Each class we learn tangible, real-world frameworks we can implement in our work Further, we have thought-provoking discussions based on case studies, some of which professor London wrote himself Lastly, it has been a great way to connect with others inserted in making a positive impact through business I have had the opportunity to work with a passionate group of students on a class project, attend professor London’s office hours, and listen to guest speakers.”

Course Substitution Guidelines

Erb Fellows may request approval to apply credits earned in alternate 300 and 400 level (only) courses that are not currently on the Erb Fellows approved course list Courses submitted for approval should be clearly structured around the intersection of business and sustainability; this should be evident in the syllabus of the course

Fellows may request approval to apply up to three (3) credits from Senior Capstone projects.

Fellows may request approval to apply up to three (3) credits from study abroad.

To request approval of an alternate course, please complete the following form and email erbfellows@umich edu after the form is submitted to ensure we see your submission:

Course approval requests require:

✓ Course details: including course number, title, faculty instructor, and the number of credits

✓ Abrief note explaining why you would like to make a substitution: acceptable explanations include scheduling conflicts, an inability to access full or restricted classes, etc. Substitutions are unlikely to be approved for reasons like a lack of interest in a particular course or topic, etc.

✓ A1-3 paragraph rationale for why the proposed course substitution should be approved: this should clearly describe how the substituted course will further your understanding of topics at the intersection of business and sustainability

✓ Syllabus for proposed course substitution

✓ Use this form to request approval to take a course P/F as well!
