Laurel Graeber of the NEW YORK TIMES wrote:

"EQUUS, however, has the heft and breadth of a Clydesdale, screening more than 80 films Friday through Sunday in Brooklyn. It also comprises equine art and book showcases, director panels and jury awards (the Winnies).... EQUUS has just instituted an on-demand streaming service for its films, which “aren’t made in somebody’s little back room on a laptop,” said Lisa Diersen, an equestrian and former engineer who founded the festival in 2013, “These are PBS-quality documentaries.” (Equus also shows a few fictional films.)" New Mexico Equine Liability Act

Under New Mexico Law, “No person, corporation or partnership is liable for personal injuries to or for the death of a rider that may occur as a result of the behavior of equine animals while engaged in any equine activities.” And “No person, corporation or partnership shall make any claim against, maintain any action against or recover from a rider, operator, owner, trainer or promoter for injury, loss or damage resulting from equine behavior unless the acts or omissions of the rider, owner, operator, trainer or promoter constitutes negligence.”

Loving Thunder's mission is to empower and improve the quality of life for people with mental and physical challenges through therapeutic horsemanship, therapies, and educational outreach. What is therapeutic horseback riding and is it therapy? Therapeutic Riding is different from Hippotherapy. We target riding skills as our first goal. We strive to teach "Horsemanship" to our riders with special needs. Hippotherapy is offered by a licensed therapist (Occupational, Physical, or Speech), specifically targeting a therapy goal, and is usually prescribed by a Physician. It does not necessarily teach horseback riding or horsemanship skills, and rarely involves grooming and tacking of the horses. Technically, therapeutic riding is not therapy. However, therapeutic riding targets riding skills and the rider gains many benefits such as building muscle strength, eye hand coordination, fine and gross motor improvement, social skills, self confidence, and a fun outdoor recreational activity. Riders are motivated to participate with of the horse interaction. We have riders age 4 and older with a variety of life challenges. Some of those challenges are Autism, Down Syndrome, developmental delays, ADD & ADHD, spinal defects, PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and many more. We will design a therapeutic riding lesson to fit your rider and all of their needs. Some riders have up to 3 volunteers and some have none. Our veterans are here as functioning adults and generally require no sidewalkers or horse leaders but gain confidence and overcome many symptoms of PTSD by bonding with the horses. The horses are sentient beings and are able to give immediate response and reaction to built up tension and anger. They naturally respond to the release of their energy and anxieties. https://lovingthunder.com/

Wilderwood was started in 2018 by Dr. Rebecca Evanko, an autistic Ph.D, equestrian, and educator and Dr. Mark Evanko, an osteopathic physician and equestrian. Committed to making a difference in the live of autistic people, Rebecca and Mark started looking for programs they could adapt as their life’s work. Finding none that fit their ideals and aspirations, they worked with other specialists and professionals to create their own. The result is Wilderwood. The program continues to evolve, responding to the experience of teaching, learning, and listening to the participants and autistic mentors who are part of it. In all that we do, Wilderwood continues to embrace its mission to provide equine-based and facilitated programs for autistic adults and youth, the broader community, and to educate about horses and autism.

Wilderwood’s programs are designed, led, and delivered by appropriately qualified faculty. This includes personnel trained in osteopathy, cognitive linguistics, Parelli training, basic principles of Légèreté dressage, PATH-certified instructors, physical therapy, and social work. Dr. Rebecca Evanko is currently completing a second Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. There’s more on our story in the award-winning documentary, Hautism and Wilderwood, which can be viewed below. The documentary outlined Wilderwood’s original program, which was a nine-month curriculum. Though Wilderwood’s programs have now expanded and adapted to the needs of our participants and community, the philosophy of Hautism remains at the heart of our program and all that we endeavor to achieve. https://wilderwoodequinetherapy.org/

Freedom Reigns Sanctuary Freedom Reign Foundation is a non-profit 501C (3) that is dedicating to improving the lives of horses by rescuing those that are destined for slaughter and providing them a safe haven; backing legislature that improves the quality of life for horses in many industries; and educating the public on the plight of so many horses in need. Freedom Reigns Sanctuary is a place to observe these beautiful creatures in their natural social circles and as close to natural habitat as we can create. We provide them with the basic care of semi-annual vaccines and hoof trimmings as well as any emergency care deemed necessary as long as their future quality of life will remain adequate for this setting. The equines are given ample freedom to select the friends and companions they connect and build bonds with which usually creates mini herds with like groups. Most of the horses are naturally grazing and moving about on over 3000 acres. Several smaller groups are temporarily homed in smaller pastures either as families, mares with new babies or horses needing temporary rehabilitation. Incoming horses are always quarantined for 4-6 weeks depending on where they are coming from. Any horses not grazing in our large pastures are fed daily our farmed at the ranch, high quality oak/wheat/barley hay. Freedom Reigns is not open to the public but visitors are welcome to contact us for a private tour if in the San Juan Bautista area. We are a working ranch in which the horses welfare is our main focus

She enlisted support from other writer’s who inspired her. Marguerite Henry, C. W. Anderson, Joy Adamson, Walter Farley, and other prominent authors in the horse book genre supported her regularly through an exchange of letters when she needed horse handling and training guidance through grade school. After receiving her diploma and journalist credentials from Boston University’s School of Public Communication in 1976, she worked 20 years as a free lance photo-journalist,public communication and marketing consultant. In 1990, she relocating her riding school from western Massachusetts to Novato, California, where she founded Diamond Lu Productions and released her first videos series, “American Horsemanship for Young & Old” (1995). In the years that followed, her horse training articles were translated into six other languages to provide support for her students in other countries. Between 1995-1999, Leslie rode and worked alongside rancher and master horseman, Bill Dorrance (January 19,1906 - July 22, 1999) from Salinas, California. As part of her mission to serve the horse, she coauthored and published the classic training manual, “True Horsemanship Through Feel” just weeks before Bill Dorrance passed on. A few years later, she released “Horse Handling & Riding Through Feel” the 10-CD audio book that supports horse owners in all disciplines, breed associations and riding styles. In 2021, Leslie expanded her career to include equine dentistry services, locomotion evaluation, and weanling/foal handling for those new to horses from all disciplines. Dr. Elizabeth Woolsey – Tennessee Attending Author 3 Literary Submissions Parkside Veterinary Clinic I want to be a Vet The Travels Of Dr. Rebecca Harper Audio Book A Man’s Worth I have ridden horses since I was a small child, which is what inspired me to become a horse veterinarian. I’ve been a horse vet for over 35 years. Writing is my guilty pleasure. I love to share true stories of my life as a horse veterinarian both in America and in Australia where I have lived and worked for the last 28 years. My time in Australia has been rich in both veterinary medicine and the daily dramas of life. I have been blessed with a wonderful extended family, which includes not only my blood-born daughter but also other children, friends and my loyal staff who have made my work so easy. My horses, dogs and cats have provided me with fodder for some of the stories that I now write about. My inspiration for telling these stories comes from both my real life and the wonderful books that I have read or listened to while driving around the countryside attending horses.

I am eternally grateful to the person who said, “You write like you’re talking to me.” I am talking to you. I am excited to share my stories with you. So, sit down, and I’ll tell you a story.

Lynne Pomeranz, Photographer – New Mexico Attending Artist As a photographer, I am reminded daily of how precious and fleeting a moment can be. I have always been drawn to all things wild, horses, the landscape, subjects abandoned and unbranded by time, and the sense of poetry in everyday scenes that tend to go unnoticed. About the Photographer In Spring 2004, The Gaited Horse magazine wrote, “Pomeranz is one of those best-kept secrets, whose images touch the heart like few others”. Since then her equine images have been published on the covers and columns of numerous publications and books including, Santa Fean, New Mexico Magazine, Western Art Collector, Western Horseman, The Gaited Horse, Tony & The Cows, Killing Godiva’s Horse, Artists For Mustangs. She has received an Addie award, awards from the American Horse Publications, and was the poster artist for the group exhibit, Facing the Wind: The Extraordinary Faces of Our Wild Horses & Burros, at the Denver International Airport. Among Wild Horses: A Portrait of the Pryor Mountain Mustangs, her book of photographs, is now in fourth printing. Lynne’s images have been exhibited throughout the West and collected worldwide. Current representation includes True West, Santa Fe, NM, Belle of The West, Madrid, NM, and her studio/gallery in Corrales, NM. Lynne is no stranger to the ways and the world of horses. She has dreamed horses since the age of three and had numerous jobs in the horse industry before turning to photography fulltime. Her own horse, Teques Snickers, was her constant inspiration while pursuing her journey to combine her love of horses and fine art photography. Artist’s Statement Since my first encounter with wild horses in 2003, I have been on a quest to share their world with others through my photographs. I have been blessed with the opportunity to spend countless hours in the wild pursuing my art while capturing images of horses as nature intended…as they wish to be…simply themselves. I hope these images convey to you the soulful beauty and magnificent spirit of wild horses and inspire you to become involved in the advocacy movement to protect them on the wild lands that are their home. 2006, Corrales, New Mexico

Jodie Brenner – Texas Attending Artist WINNER - Watercolors I’ve always been in love with horses. They have saved me more than once and that's why I take the medicine of the horse and paint it.

As a young girl my horses carried me through the Pennsylvania forest to escape teenage life and earthly concerns. They taught me their silent language, wisdom and grace. I’ve called Montana, Colorado and Oregon home for the past 18 years, 10 of those years as a caretaker-ranch manager for horse ranches and horse rescues. I was entrusted to love and care for a herd of blind horses, retired ranch horses, top performance endurance and cutting horses, mares and foals.

A self-taught artist, I immerse myself in the textures, color and details of every animal on my easel. I'm creating my paintings with the velvety, vibrant colors of soft pastels and the magical flow of watercolors. My Mustang gelding of 16 years, my 8 year old Mustang mare and three cats provide me with infinite inspiration. In 2019, I was catapulted into a 4+ year life changing in so many ways-healing journey initiated by an onset of vertigo, chronic head pain, nausea, several vestibular and cognitive limitations. Normal everyday life was gone and life became scary and surreal. My naturopath encouraged me to take the medicine of the horse and paint it. The Heart of the Horse is healing for the Heart of the Human. They've always filled my heart with love and joy. My heart’s desire is to illuminate the essence, spirit and healing power of the horses through my paintings. My work and extensive training in Equine Facilitated Coaching, Equine Integrated Bodywork and Animal Reiki Teacher gives me the opportunity to truly know the horse inside and outside. I call upon this wisdom for each horse that's on my easel. https://www.jodiebrenner.com/ jodie@jodiebrenner.com https://www.facebook.com/jodie.brenner.1

Joe B. Armstrong– New Mexico Attending Author I am an Octogenarian, Cattleman, Horseman, PhD and Educator. Horseman‘s Handbook is the result of the synergy of these experiences. The Horseman’s Handbook is the result of the synergy of my life experiences. My friend David Whitaker may have said it best: “Joe Armstrong didn’t write this book; he and his son Edward just recorded what happened.” I was born on July 23, 1937, weighing 4.5 pounds, in Coffeeville, Mississippi. I had wonderful, strong, loving parents—one sister and two brothers. Today, I am the last of the tribe. My mother and father were adamant that we each get a good education and then let us choose our own vocations. I attended Millsaps College for 2 years and, as planned, transferred to Mississippi State University to pursue my B.S. in Animal Husbandry. At Mississippi State, I likely achieved the distinction of being the youngest AQHA judge. AQHA held a judge’s school at Miss State in December 1958; I was 21 years old and earned my Judge’s Card. That spring, I turned down the opportunity to judge in Grapevine, Texas, and my judging team coach and mentor, Carl Williams, was really upset with me. I became active and judged my first shows in 1961. My second show at Sapulpa, Oklahoma, had Okie Leo, Poco Margaret, Leo Louise, and many other greats. A prominent horse breeder named Roland Stanfield came up to me after the halter classes and said, “Son, I didn’t have any horses in the halter classes, but you did a good job of placing those classes.” I was off and running! I received my M.S. from Oklahoma State University and my Ph.D. from Colorado State University. Both degrees were in Animal Breeding. At Colorado State, I not only got my Ph.D. but also invited Jesus Christ into my life as my Savior and Lord and married Rusty Vieh, the love of my life. We were married on December 28th, 1963! Vocationally, Rusty and I lived in Auburn, Alabama, where I was an Extension Beef Cattle Specialist. My horse knowledge afforded me almost immediate acceptance and credibility in my Beef Cattle Extension work.

Bruce Anderson – South Carolina Mustang Heritage Foundation TIP Trainer – Camden South Carolina Natural HumanshipTM Nature’s View, Inc. and The Marley Project 501 (c)(3) Bruce Anderson is a passionate and enthusiastic trainer and clinician who firmly believes not only in the power of the horse, but also in our responsibility to help horses acclimate into our modern world. Bruce grew up on the West Indian islands of Trinidad and Tobago and it was there on the family cocoa and coffee estate that he began his relationship with horses. He learned to ride on the estate and then represented his country on the National Show Jumping Team. From there he moved on to breeding farms at home, in the U.K. and in the U.S. While in England, he earned an agricultural degree at Merristwood College and in the U.S. where he worked in the Thoroughbred racing industry. He eventually moved into the hunter/jumper “A” show circuit, working in Camden, SC where he is now established as a trainer. Bruce is certified through the Mustang Heritage Foundation's Trainer Incentive Program and enjoys working with Mustangs, but also appreciates working with owners and their horses to assist them in building better relationships. Bruce’s gift is centered in his unique system of Natural HumanshipTM developed over a lifetime of work with all types of horses. His recent experience working with feral horses has taken the system to another level. One of Bruce’s most powerful and influential work settings took place in 2015 when he was called to the Bahamas to work with Nunki, the last feral mare in the line of Abaco Island Wild Horses, now extinct. That experience was the catalyst for a documentary featuring Bruce’s life and work, “The Edge: Bruce Anderson's Natural HumanshipTM.” A selected presenter for the 2018 World Equestrian Games and 2020 EQUITANA USA, Bruce works with counselors and mental health professionals, law enforcement agencies, school and church groups across the southeastern US to provide Equine Assisted Services with partner Julianne Neal through Nature’s View, Inc. and The Marley Project 501(c)(3). Sky Epperson - Indiana MUSTANG Adoption Academy – Founder/Director Mustang Heritage Foundation TIP Trainer Haubstadt, IN www.mustangadoptionacademy.com Sky is a father of triplets, a horseman, mustang gentler and trainer from Southwest Indiana. Interestingly Sky grew up without horses, heck he did not even have a pet till he was married and in is late 20’s. Around 2003 Sky got his first horse at the encouragement of his father who wanted another riding buddy. Sky took his father’s advice on that first horse and learned to not take his dad’s horse advice! The horse had some issues caused by previous owners/trainers that put Sky on the fast track to learning much about the horse. This learning process led to a passion and love for the horse, horse training and horse communication with both humans and herd. Sky and his 3 children’s love for horses has grown and now have a herd of 11 horses and 2 onery but adorable burros. The herd, Sky, and usually one or two of the family squeeze in a horse pack trip each year. As a Brain Based Horseman, Sky, has worked with Mustangs placed in 10 different states AND 2 countries, he also has worked with horses in three continents. Sky believes that although there are many training methods that can help horses and mustangs there is only one, that can help all horses, Brain Based Horsemanship. This will be the way America saves the Mustang. Most of Sky’s horse sense has come from studying a variety of trainers but a spur of the moment sign up for a West Taylor seminar pulled it together for him and he is fully entrenched with science-based horsemanship of Dr. Steven Peters. Everything Sky had learned was validated in this clinic. Horse neuroscience has helped him to understand the horse better. West Taylor and Dr. Steven Peters really showed what was important.

Sky’s horse sense grew immensely when working for Hall of Famer, Terry Palmer and the Palmer family at their Ranch in Durango Colorado. Having the chance to be in front of some many different horses from yearlings to older horses was a real blessing. Today, Sky specializes in TIP training Mustangs, saddle starting Mustangs, and training horses and their humans to communicate better, as well as, tirelessly, promoting successful Mustang adoption through the Mustang Adoption Academy and Brain Based Horsemanship. Sky is available to do Clinics or demonstrations or help you with your Mustang privately. Reach out to him to save your mustang as well as others. “Pappa” Mike Cassedy - Kentucky Mustang Heritage Foundation TIP Trainer Burlington, Kentucky The very foundation of my horsemanship came from Uncle Albert White Horse up on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. “See what they see, think what they are thinking, and you will have the horse!”. Uncle Albert White Horse Spending summer after summer, watching, learning and riding up on the Rez, gave me that solid foundation of learning the horse. Years of the love of the horse, brought me to my first mustang in 2017. Attending a Pow Wow in Ohio, approached by a young lady who had a “free mustang” from a rescue organization for her green rider daughter’s 4-H introduction, was the start of my passion for the mustang. Accepted three times for the KY EMM was an opportunity of a lifetime, though my first EMM was at the age of 65. The passion carried over to my daughter, April Michelle Cassedy, and 14-year-old AD Adren Gross that became known as Team Pappa Mike. Over the last 5 years, Team Pappa Mike has worked with over 30 mustangs of various degrees in their training. What we found after our very first mustang, One Horse’s Journey, barn name “Journey”, was the large number of mustangs that horse people were either incapable or lack the training ability to move forward with their adopted mustangs. We decided we would no longer adopt untouched mustangs (with exceptions of the EMM Competition) but would focus on helping others with their mustangs and/or taking on abandoned mustangs. Journey is still with April Michelle along with 3 other mustangs and I have Wakiyan, my 2019 KY EMM Mustang and Akicita my other Pinto Mustang. We continue to move forward and work with all levels of mustangs as it has become a “Whatever It Takes” mindset with these National Treasures through what we established as “The Way” we work with mustangs. Amy Dumas - California Bureau of Land Management My affinity for horses is probably genetic, skipping a generation, from my paternal grandparents. When I was five, I was thrown off for the first time. On my way home, between sobs, I told my mother, "When I get a horse, I'm going to name him Stupid." That is when my parents signed me up for riding lessons at a local stable. I trained in hunters for most of my childhood. I have also worked at thoroughbred and standardbred training stables, played polo, worked at a cow/calf operation, and worked with problem horses. I always figured I would go to vet school, so I studied Animal Science at Cornell. I learned that I was too squeamish for vet school and discovered that animal behavior was my passion. I was introduced to round pen training in college, as well. I earned my master’s degree in Conservation Biology at Yale with the intention of working with endangered equine species. After grad school, I worked in Montana on dude ranch for one last fun job before I started my career or went back for a PhD in Behavior. The nextdoor neighbor introduced me to his four mustangs. Though I never considered myself a specific breed person, I fell in love with these animals. I adopted my first BLM horse in 1996. In 2000, I started with BLM in central Nevada as a Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, where I got to work with the wild ones in the wild! I assumed my current position in 2008 where I oversee BLM California’s Wild Horse and Burro Program which includes 2 preparation facilities, 1 training facility, and 21 herd management areas.

Bureau of Land Management The BLM works to place excess animals into private care through its Adoption and Sales Programs as well as successful partnerships with organizations across the nation. Many have found it personally challenging and rewarding to adopt or purchase a wild horse or burro. It is a chance to care for, and then own, a part of America’s heritage. The BLM has placed more than 240,000 wild horses and burros into private care since 1971. Many of those animals have become excellent pleasure, show, or work horses.

Trudy Midas – Minnesota Co-Founder/President Espana Silk Products 4025 Orleans Ln N Minneapolis, MN 55441 The story of Espana natural grooming products goes back to 1999 and an accident in an indoor arena. Trudy Midas, co-owner of the company with husband, Bob Hansen, was thrown from her horse and broke her back making it impossible to ride again for four years. After three surgeries and years of extensive rehabilitation she was still only able to provide daily grooming and maintain the all-important animal/human bond. During this time Trudy used virtually every grooming product on the market. The harsh chemicals in some made Bob wonder if these ingredients could be harmful to Trudy and/or her horse. The owners of seven racehorses and two pleasure horses at the time, Trudy and Bob began investigating better options. Their research indicated that a new all-natural equine grooming line would be a welcome addition in the stables. They then set out to develop the line of all natural products that would be effective and safe for humans and animals. This process included consultations with chemists, and additional research and development which led to the inclusion of silk proteins as a key ingredient and to the pleasant signature cucumber-spa fragrance of all Espana SILK products. Finally, in 2006, the husband-and-wife team found an experienced, quality manufacturer to produce their all-natural line of grooming products.

Dr. Sue Anne Wells & The Mustang Leadership Partners Team – Tennessee (Zooming in Friday 12:00 pm) Youth & Mustangs Mustang Leadership Partners (MLP) was established in February 2009 to provide girls and young women with an opportunity to develop, practice, and improve relationship skills, responsibility, social accountability, self-awareness and self-confidence—all of which are mirrored in the mustang’s behavior. Providing hands-on science experiences and equestrian training, the MLP program is grounded in the belief that horses are mirrors to our energy systems and teach us important life lessons. The MLP program requires a year-long commitment and dedication to several academic and citizenship standards. To participate in the MLP program, CGLA students must complete an application and are selected based upon their commitment to the MLP standards and their current academic standing. The program serves up to sixteen students (eight middle school and eight high school). 1219 CARTER LAKE RD Chattanooga, Tennessee 37405 https://www.cglaonline.com/student-center/mustang-leadership-partners

The team is covering 12 states, coast to coast from Delaware to California, riding previously wild Mustangs while packing, camping and speaking about the power of these amazing animals. Lisanne rode out from Delaware’s historic Cape Henlopen State Park on September 28, 2021, with members of the team and is continuing her adventures through Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. The documentary will detail the struggles and triumphs that she encounters, most attributed to the kindness of strangers met along the journey. We will also feature aspects of the ADT in each state, Mustang adoptions inspired by the project, college and university equine programs utilizing Mustangs, Veterans Programs in existence and other Mustang-related stories. The goal of the ride is to cover 5,000 miles across the country while inspiring the adoption of 5,000 Mustangs into appropriate homes. Through the documentary film, related podcast/vodcast and documentaryseries, we are trying to reach as many people as possible to make it happen!

Susan Ash – New Mexico SAVE Havasupai Horses In early 2016, several individuals came together out of compassion to help improve the lives of the Havasupai pack animals by calling for the cessation of violence against them, and the adoption of a standard of care for them. The group's volunteers, as well as its supporters, have been deeply affected by the plight of the pack animals in the canyon, whether by witnessing it in person, or feeling it from afar.

Exposing the Secret Despite the exquisite beauty of Havasu Falls, there has long been a dark secret hiding in the corners of the village and under the packs and saddles of far too many animals. Horses, mules and donkeys have been transporting gear and tourists along the 8-10 mile trail into and out of the canyon for decades, yet their story of abuse has largely gone untold. Through the efforts of SAVE and its supporters, the secret is finally being exposed, and the story is being told. SAVE has put together a comprehensive list of changes needed as the minimum requirements to establish the humane care and operation of pack animals in Supai. Note that neglecting any one of these needed changes will result in failure. None are optional. https://vimeo.com/233887309 https://havasupaihorses.org/ https://www.facebook.com/HavasupaiHorses

Patricia Irick – New Mexico Mustang Camp A New Mexico Non-Profit Organization Training Wild Horses for Adoption. Mustang Camp is a New Mexico Non-Profit organization training wild horses for adoption. Mustang Camp is located in the old Largo Canyon School facility on 14 acres within remote wilderness land in northern New Mexico. Our mission is to reduce the suffering of captive horses through humane training practices, train people to train horses, and to get horses adopted to suitable homes. We are were the only organization in the world that is using the science of learning to address the mustang crisis - and we want to help other people learn to use these well-tested methods. Our program consists of bringing excess wild horses and burros to Mustang Camp to be trained and socialized using our 26-step criteria program. It's quite simple, the animal is trained in the 26 steps and when they can be caught, haltered, led, loaded into a horse-trailer, stand tied, and have their feet trimmed, they become available for adoption to suitable homes on behalf of the government or the NGO holding title. A trained and approachable animal is 100 times more likely to be adopted. We also provide a positive rescue environment for starving or abused horses and horses needing emotional rehabilitation. We partner with the local northern New Mexico humane societies, animal control offices, and horse rescues to provide loving care and training to get these animals emotionally and physically well for adoption to better homes. There is no shortage of horses in northern New Mexico that are in need of help. The use of Least-Coercive principles of animal training pay off for these animals. https://www.mustangcamp.org/ https://www.facebook.com/MustangCamp email: patricia@mustangcamp.org 2455 CR 379, Counselor, NM phone: 505-419-2575 Patricia phone: 505-419-9754 John

Clea Hall– New Mexico Happy Rascal Ranch Happy Rascal Ranch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and all donations are tax deductible. All donations go toward the Hay Fund for our horses and donkeys. We are Grateful for the support of the local community and beyond. help. The use of Least-Coercive principles of animal training pay off for these animals. Clea G. Hall and her mother Sally G. Hall were on the forefront of wild horse rescue when things were at their ugliest point in Placitas New Mexico. They have saved multiple herds of wild horses who were rounded up by locals, picked up by the livestock board, and put up for auction. They have offered sanctuary to many equines. Horses (both domestic and once wild), donkeys, mini donkeys, mini mules. This includes seniors and ones with special needs (whose owners became sick and passed away.) Many of their rescues had been neglected and now have a forever home, safe pasture to roam, full bellies, and unconditional love. This nonprofit corporation was formed specifically and primarily for the purpose of providing a sanctuary and forever home for horses once wild in Placitas, NM and rescued equines, with an emphasis on natural herd dynamics. In addition, to offer an opportunity for experiential learning and transforming through connecting with the herd in nature.

Sandy Johnson – New Mexico Placitas Wild Horses Placitas Wild began in 2003 as a loose-knit group of Placitas citizens concerned about the division in our community over the free-roaming horses. Originally, PW was an informal organization that provided some food and water to the wild horses that roamed the thousands of acres of public and tribal lands north of our homes. During droughts volunteers convinced homeowners abutting the range lands to allow us to put water troughs at the edges of their property that we filled daily. Other volunteers discreetly left hay for the horses to forage.

The Placitas horses and their ancestors have roamed for centuries across lands belonging to the state and federal governments, sovereign Indian lands and private land. Their presence has created jurisdictional issues that Placitas, as an unincorporated community, has not been able to solve. Sandoval County attempted to help enable solutions that included administration of birth control to stabilize herd growth, but we are all up against the unyielding power of government bureaucracies. As an organization, we must be prepared to challenge and change entrenched governmental policy. Placitas Wild Horses provides a safe haven for wild horses collected and saved from both BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and tribal lands. We provide a home for them free from traffic and constant harassment from unsupportive community members while giving them daily care, food, water and shelter as well as any veterinary support needed. Dedicated volunteers have designed and manage the haven in ways that support the social wellbeing of each horse. Additionally, we also actively search for permanent, loving homes and families for the younger horses in our care while using our haven to care for any horse that is too old or too frail to be adopted.

The Films In Competition

Special Screening An Open Door: Life and Influence of Temple Grandin - USA Directed by: John Barnhardt 72:00 mins An Open Door is the forthcoming documentary that reflects on the influential life and work of Dr. Temple Grandin as a champion of the humane treatment of livestock, autism rights, and inclusive neurodiversity by employing her gifted insights from her personal experience with autism and visual thinking. The film speaks with Dr. Grandin, her colleagues, industry professionals and those she has influenced to celebrate her groundbreaking life, lessons learned and lasting legacy. An Open Door is directed by award-winning filmmaker John Barnhardt and presented by Colorado State University.

About the film An Open Door features Temple Grandin retracing her path in life and the lessons she learned and in turn shared with others who were affected by her experiences and insights. DIRECTOR: JOHN BARNHARDT As an adolescent, John Barnhardt devoured every film in every genre he could get his hands on, as a film student he would stay late in college and take on extra projects, who’s dreamed of a film career since age nine, when he watched The Road Warrior with his father. “I want to make movies,” Barnhardt announced to his father as they walked out of the theater. “Good,” his dad replied. An engineer by trade and avid photographer, Barnhardt’s father put a camera in his son’s hands and from that moment on fueled his hunger. “My dad was a true forward thinker, an artist; he saturated me with movies. We’d watch The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now; my dad never filtered what I saw. He loved the classics, too. We’d watch everything then talk about it.” After graduating from Colorado State, with a degree in English and Poetry, Barnhardt followed his heart to Charleston, South Carolina, where he began the slow crawl up the film ladder, starting at the bottom working in the Channel Four Newsroom; where he ran the teleprompter, working for peanuts. While he was working his way up the ranks at Channel Four, Barnhardt was taking college classes from Professor Russell Schaaf at Trident Technical College; filming anything and everything he could, including gore-drenched, godawful (but well-shot) horror flicks, many staged in his Park Circle home. By doing this John founded his Barnfly Productions company as well as slowly expanded his portfolio.

Changing Strides - USA Directed by: Madeline Tremblay 07:58 mins Equestrian Student Film

WINNIE Winner – Film – Short Documentary - Student Professional horseback riding is a dangerous sport. Six three-day-event athletes reflect on the risks and rewards. In this documentary, I wanted to explore the risks and the rewards of the horseback riding world. More specifically, those who dedicate their lives to horses as three-day-event riders. As someone who has competed as an event rider at the lower levels, the injuries and challenges I have faced from the sport are minuscule compared to those riding at the Olympic level. With the risk of death or life-altering injuries every time one gets on a horse, I wanted to better understand those who chose to accept the risks and make horseback riding their career, rather than a hobby.

Madeline Tremblay is a filmmaker from Massachusetts. A drone pilot who has done aerial videography around the globe, she plans to be a cinematographer. With an extensive music background, she’s also interested in sound design and scoring for film. Currently, she is studying film production at Florida State University in the College of Motion Picture Arts as a BFA student. Outside of film school, Madeline is a rower and a horseback rider.

Freedom Reigns - USA Directed by: Matt Cohn & Joey Rossetti 83:00 mins

WINNIE Winner – Film – Documentary WINNIE Winner – Film – Director - Documentary A young horse whisperer rehabilitates rescued wild horses and contemplates his future role in life, while expanding our understanding of autism and offering hope resolving America's wild mustang round-up travesty. The setting is Freedom Reigns Equine Sanctuary in San Benito County, California, where over five hundred rescued horses and burros run free on 3,800 acres. Freedom Reigns is part boy-horse-whisperer tale, part Autism Spectrum Disorder study, and part solution search for America’s failing wild mustang roundup program. Cipi, a young, on-the-spectrum ranch hand, forgoes a scholarship, opting to use his exceptional abilities to heal rescued horses. As he “gentles'' Liberty - a free roaming mustang corralled when pregnant by Bureau of Land Management helicopters, and Blaze – Liberty’s foal born in a BLM holding pen prison, the story expands to reveal a majestic 3,800-acre ranch where 540 once wild horses run free again in their forever-home. Other films address America’s wild mustang fiasco with footage of horrific roundups, inhumane holding pens and outraged interviewees. Freedom Reigns chooses a softer lens. Observing Cipi, his family, and the sanctuary's amazing founder Alicia, we see how individual passion and sacrifice can model a positive way forward through the challenging wild mustang issues. Temple Grandin, a mentor to Cipi, visits the ranch, and provides insights into ASD and the value of different thinkers. Other interviews include Cipi’s parents, Carrie and Lole, and Scott Wilson, AWHC board member, SONY World Photography first place winner. RAMBO of THE CARRACAS MESA: A HISTORY OF THE JICARILLA MUSTANGS AND MUSTANGERS - USA Directed by: Laura Harper 75:36 mins

Honorable Mention – Film – Documentary Honorable Mention – Film - Director More than three years ago, Laura Harper began work on a film script about her once-wild mustang, Rambo. As she delved into his life, she found Rambo’s story connected the evolution of the horse to New Mexico’s history and her own life here in San Juan County. Laura discovered that the horses used by the Conquistadors more than five hundred years ago to traverse New Mexico had an ancient bloodline that is found here today. Amazingly, a 2013 genetic analysis conducted by Dr. E. Gus Cothran, Department of Veterinary Integrative Bioscience, concluded the Old-World Iberian breed is conclusively a genetic marker present in the Jicarilla mustangs of Northern New Mexico and Rambo’s DNA as well. By tracing the mustangs’ bloodline, a wonderful history of New Mexico—its wild horses and its people— is revealed and vibrantly retold in Laura’s film, “RAMBO of the Carracas Mesa: A History of the Jicarilla Mustangs and Mustangers.” The film features local families that represent the diverse culture of Northern New Mexico and their personal relationships with the Jicarilla mustangs. It is through their individual stories that we learn the Jicarilla mustang’s historic value to Northern New Mexico’s culture. The documentary concludes with the idea that by joining nature, horsemanship, community, science, and technology, there can be a positive future for the mustangs and the approach of the mustangers.

Laura Harper Laura lives in Dolores Colorado with her husband Greg and her horses, Dusty Dandy, RAMBO and Wendy. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Jicarilla Mustang Heritage Alliance, Editor of the Four Corners Equine Rescue newsletter publication and President of the San Juan County Historical Society, NM. She holds a MA in Organizational Management.

Instead, you will work, one-on-one with the wild ones, gaining their trust, learning their language, and building a relationship and true partnership that you have always dreamed of but never knew possible. The young horses being socialized in this clinic have shown a natural desire to relate to humans. To make their futures less traumatic for veterinary care, foster homes, and permanent placement, these young horses will be your teachers. https://www.reachouttohorses.com/

Ronda Gregorio (USA) Gregorio Photography Wild Heart, The Mustang Book Project – COMING SOON!!! While searching out my creative path I have found myself, again and again, working with my first love, horses. Currently I am working on "WILD HEART" #TheMustangBookProject, it is a book and documentary that is focusing on wild mustangs in the fabric of the performance horse world. In addition to equestrian, I also photograph weddings, special events, parties, horse shows, animals, and commercial products. I work with clients all over the world, including The Smithsonian, NOVICA (owned by National Geographic), Nicole Lapin and Sotheby's. My images have been featured in such notable publications as Red Book, US Equestrian, Dover Saddlery, Destination Weddings and Honeymoons, Caribbean Brides, The Scout Guide and The Knot.com to name a few. Also, I contract with "The Smithsonian" and have work on permanent display at one of their facilities, The Smithsonian Conservation and Biology Institute. Although I am based out of Virginia, I will accompany my clients to wherever their hearts desire. I would love the opportunity to share my vision with you. Please contact me to inquire about custom packages or special requests. https://lily-khaki-wmsx.squarespace.com/wild-heart https://www.facebook.com/photogregorio
