Editorial Polo is a sport of legends. Like the one from medieval times which tells how Genghis Khan trained his troops by having them practise this war game. Some say that it was in this region that polo was born, 1800 years before the conquests of the Mongolian emperor. Others are sure that it was in Asia Minor, or even Persia, where the most ancient of team sports came to light. At all events, it was in India that the English colonials discovered it in the 19th century, whereupon they reinvented it and gave it to the world in its modern form.

Over the last 150 years, modern legends have come about: memorable matches and players who have become heroes in their country. This country is of course Argentina, where the polo imported by the English has taken root most successfully. The pampas lent themselves to it, and the horses were already there in large numbers, the founding stock of great champions of recent years, from the legendary Marsellesa to the heroic Aiken Cura.

Having barely got off the boat from India to England (in 1859) and drawn up the rules, the British exported this new game and spread it in the countries under its influence. It was in Argentina where polo took root most successfully, and it is in Argentina where the most fascinating and difficult of tournaments is played: the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo, in short: the Palermo Open.
Apenas desembarcado de las Indias en Inglaterra (en 1859), apenas reglamentado y codificado, los británicos exportaron este nuevo juego y lo extendieron por sus países de influencia. Es en Argentina donde el polo arraigó mejor, es en Argentina donde se juega el torneo más fascinante y más difícil: el Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo, o, para abreviar: el Open de Palermo.
It is said that the first polo match in Argentina was played in 1875 in the province of Santa Fe at the Estancia of a certain David Shennan. The matches then multiplied from ranch to ranch, and in 1893, on the field of the current renowned Hurlingham Club, the ancestor of the Argentine Open was played, at the time called the River Plate Polo Championship. Together with the Argentine Polo Association, the Argentine Open was born 1922, and was played in Hurlingham until 1928 when it took over the pitches of the current military field in Palermo, now in the heart of Buenos Aires. So then the history of this outof-the-ordinary tournament began to be written in this legendary stadium which grew bigger over the years and is now called La Cathedral. And what great polo masses have been said at that Cathedral!
Cuentan que el primer partido de polo de Argentina se jugó en 1875, en la provincia de Santa Fe, en la estancia de un tal David Shennan. Posteriormente se multiplicaron los encuentros de estancia en estancia hasta que en 1893 se jugó en el campo del actual y venerable club de Hurlingham, el antepasado del Open de Argentina, que se llamaba entonces el Campeonato Open de River Plate. En 1922 nació, con la Asociación Argentina de Polo, el Open de Argentina, que se jugó hasta 1928 en Hurlingham, antes de tomar posesión de las tierras del actual campo militar de Palermo, hoy en pleno centro de Buenos Aires. La historia de este torneo fuera de lo común empezó por tanto a escribirse en este mítico estadio, que ha ido creciendo con los años y que se llama hoy La Catedral. Handicaps were introduced in 1913, and in the Traill brothers’ North Santa Fe, Juan was the first ever 10 handicap in history. The team won the tournament eight times between 1904 and 1917. It was certainly much less than the peerless Coronel Suarez, the Basque-Irish combination of the Heguy and Harriott brothers, which won the Open twenty-two times between 1952 and 1981. In 1975, Coronel Suarez was the first team in history to enter the field with a handicap of 40 goals. Alberto and Horacio Heguy have not only won at Palermo nearly twenty times, but have also fathered seven sons who have won ten titles. “Enemy” cousins whose confrontations have been more heated than any other match. Horacio’s sons in Indios Chapaleufú I have also won the Open, turning up with 40 handicaps in 1995. The family has produced nine 10 handicaps, a genetic phenomenon! Today La Dolfina and Ellerstina are the teams that are continuing to write this wonderful history. And it seems that for some years to come, Ellerstina, the dream of Gonzalo Pieres, will be the nightmare for the other teams engaged in these legendary contests.
En 1913 se instituyeron los hándicaps y, en el seno del North Santa Fe de los hermanos Traill, Juan fue el primer hándicap 10 de la historia. El equipo ganó el torneo en ocho ocasiones entre 1904 y 1917. Por supuesto esto es mucho menos que el récord del inigualable Coronel Suárez, la combinación vasco-irlandesa de los hermanos Heguy y Harriott, que ganó el Abierto en veintidós ocasiones entre 1952 y 1981. En 1975, Coronel Suárez fue el primer equipo de la historia que entró en el campo con 40 goles de hándicap. Alberto y Horacio Heguy no solo ganaron en Palermo casi veinte veces sino que además tuvieron siete hijos que ganaron diez títulos. Primos “enemigos” cuyas confrontaciones eran más apasionadas que ningún otro partido. Los hijos de Horacio de Indios Chapaleufu I ganaron también el Abierto presentándose con 40 de hándicap en 1995. La familia habrá engendrado nueve hándicaps 10. ¡Un auténtico fenómeno genético!. En la actualidad son los equipos de La Dolfina y de Ellerstina los que continúan escribiendo las páginas de esta bonita historia. Parece que Ellerstina, el sueño de Gonzalo Pieres, va a ser aún por algunos años la pesadilla de los demás equipos incluidos en la mítica prueba.

La Dolfina vs. Ellerstina has not become a “classic” yet, but nearly. The two teams have met at the Argentine Open final three times already, and for the moment La Dolfina is in the lead.
La Dolfina contra Ellerstina no es aún un “clásico”, pero casi. Ambos equipos se han enfrentado ya tres veces en la final del Open de Argentina, y, por el momento, la Dolfina va por delante.
The two teams met for the first time in a final in 2005. A match in which La Dolfina more or less had the upper hand, but the scores were equalised by the end of the match. The outcome was decided in “sudden death” (overtime): a penalty by Matías MacDonough was stopped by Adolfo Cambiaso’s pony who took off all by itself to end the match. In 2006, Ellerstina was halted at the semi-final and La Dolfina won its third title beating La Aguada with the Novillo Astrada brothers, again in sudden death (decisive goal by Lolo).

In 2007 La Dolfina and Ellerstina confronted each other for a second time in an Open final. A virtually identical scenario to that of 2005: La Dolfina slightly dominant, with Ellerstina picking up at the end of the match and a golden goal, by Lucas Monteverde this time thus giving Cambiaso’s men their third title in a row. That year, Lucas Monteverde became a 10 handicap and La Dolfina progressed to “40 goals”.
En 2007 la Dolfina y Ellerstina se reencontraron para una segunda confrontación en la final del Abierto. Un guión casi idéntico al de 2005 con un ligero dominio de La Dolfina, un retorno de Ellerstina al final del encuentro y un tanto de oro, esta vez de Lucas Monteverde, que permitió a los hombres de Cambiaso llevarse su tercer título consecutivo. Aquel año, Lucas Monteverde se convertía en hándicap 10 y La Dolfina pasaba a “40 goles”.
In 2008 to erase this failure, Gonzalo Pieres then decided to let the weak link in the team go, the poor Matías MacDonough, and to replace him with the new rising star of Argentinian polo, Juan-Martin Nero, who started his career with the Heguy brothers at Indios Chapaleufú 1. So, with an average age of 25 years, Ellerstina became by far the youngest team of the Argentinian elite. The wind changed direction in Palermo and while the match was again decided in sudden death, this time it was a goal from a rather lucky shot by Gonzalito Pieres that finally gave Ellerstina its first title. It was Juan-Martin Nero’s turn to be awarded 10h, and so the two teams this year present the perfect rating of 40 goals.
En 2008, para acabar con esta fatalidad, Gonzalo Pieres decidió separarse del eslabón débil del equipo, el pobre Matías McDonough, y sustituirlo por la nueva estrella ascendente del polo argentino, Juan Martín Nero, que había aprendido a usar sus armas con los hermanos Heguy de Indios Chapaleufu I. De este modo, con una media de edad de 25 años, Ellerstina se convertía en el equipo más joven con diferencia de la élite argentina. El viento roló por fin en Palermo y si bien otra vez el partido se decidió por muerte súbita, ahora fue un tanto de Gonzalito Piere, por un tiro poco afortunado, el que dio por fin su primer título a Ellerstina. Great polo outside Argentina. What joy and emotion, to see lined up in front of the Deauville town hall, the eight finalists of the 2008 Argentine Open in their gear as only previously seen in Palermo. For European polo lovers, it was an incredible dream come true, unbelievable luck. A 40-goal match, and not just any match as it was the “Revenge” match, presented by Rolex, of the greatest tournament in the world which was going to be played on the fields of one of the most respected clubs in Europe, the “Normandy” in Deauville. Apparently the event was complicated to arrange for Philippe de Nicolay, the president of Deauville polo and Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, the president of the Federation of International Polo. But the details are not important as the event was a success. Hats off first to the players. They were willing and attentive, entering into the spirit of interviews with journalists who were not necessarily familiar with polo at this level. Adolfo Cambiaso was never unapproachable; Facundo Pieres kindly gave one interview after another. All eight of them held the press conference with humour and the journalists were surprised at this simplicity and the desire to demystify this game and to treat it as a real high-level sport. Thanks to Philippe de Nicolay, the rematch was broadcast via Eurosport and transmitted by ESPN and Universal Sports in 104 countries with a peak audience of over four million viewers. The event has seduced Eurosport and now the Argentine Open final will this year, for the first time in the history of television, be transmitted live by the same network on the 5 December to the whole world. At last top level, top quality, true polo outside Argentina. If ever there was a positive effect of this “Revenge”, this is it.
El gran polo sale de Argentina. Qué felicidad y qué emoción ver alineados ante el ayuntamiento de Deauville a los ocho finalistas del Open de Argentina 2008 con sus respectivas camisetas deportivas, solo conocidas hasta ahora en el estadio del Palermo. Para los aficionados europeos al polo era un sueño imposible que se cumplía, una oportunidad increíble. Un partido de 40 goles, y no uno cualquiera puesto que se trataba de la “Revancha” del mayor torneo del mundo que iba a jugarse en el campo de uno de los más venerables clubs de Europa, el “Normandy” de Deauville. Parece ser que el asunto fue difícil de organizar para Philippe de Nicolay, presidente del polo de Deauville y Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, presidente de la Federación Internacional de Polo. Poco importan los detalles puesto que la operación resultó un éxito. Ante todo y lo primero que hay que hacer es sacarse el sombrero ante los jugadores. Se mostraron disponibles y accesibles en todo momento, prestándose al juego de las entrevistas con los periodistas que no siempre conocían el polo de este nivel. En ningún momento Adolfo Cambiaso se mostró inabordable; Facundo Peres encadenaba las entrevistas con amabilidad. Los ocho animaron con humor la conferencia de prensa y los periodistas estaban sorprendidos por esta sencillez y este deseo de desmitificar este juego y hacerlo sentir como un auténtico deporte de alto nivel. Gracias a Philippe de Nicolay, el “Gran Partido” fue retransmitido por Eurosport y emitido por ESPN y Universal Sports, en 104 países, con un pico de audiencia que sobrepasó los cuatro millones de telespectadores. La operación gustó a Eurosport y la final del Open de Argentina será este año y por primera vez desde que existe la televisión retransmitido por la misma red el día 5 de diciembre en directo para todo el planeta. Por fin el hermosísimo, el gran, el auténtico polo sale de Argentina. Si hubiese que quedarse con algún efecto positivo de esta “Revancha”, sería este.

A horseman descended from the gauchos, the petisero is the essential element of the player’s success. Listening to his horses, he spots their slightest problem and knows how to solve it. Partly horsebreaker and especially trainer, it is his hard work that ensures the good condition of the ponies.
Jinete descendiente de los gauchos, el petisero es el elemento indispensable para el triunfo del jugador. Siempre atento a sus caballos, detecta el más mínimo problema y sabe cómo resolverlo. Un poco domador pero sobre todo entrenador, de su trabajo diario dependerá la buena condición de los caballos.
When they arrive at our European clubs in the month of April, they immediately change the ambiance. South American music pervades the stables. The coloured saddle cloths, the bozales (halters) and the tacos (mallets) decorate the stable walls and doors. The petiseros come with the spring and transform our Polo Clubs into a corner of Argentina. With unbounded kindness, they never walk past without acknowledging you with the warmest “Ola, que tal?”. You of course recognise them with their oversized boinas (a Basque beret which reminds you that many Argentinians originate from the French and Spanish Basque country), their bombachas (riding breeches) and the inevitable calabash of mate (decoction of South American herbs replacing coffee) which they only put down to get their horses ready or to ride.
Cuando llegan a nuestros clubs europeos a partir del mes de abril, inmediatamente transforman el ambiente. La música sudamericana invade las caballerizas. Las mantas de silla coloreadas, los bozales y los tacos decoran las paredes y las puertas de los boxes. Los petiseros vuelven con la primavera y convierten nuestros clubs de polo en un pedazo de Argentina. De una extremada amabilidad, nunca se cruzan con usted sin gratificarle con un cálido “¡hola!, ¿qué tal?” . Se les reconoce por supuesto por sus boinas demasiado grandes (una boina vasca que nos recuerda que muchos argentinos son originarios del País Vasco (francés o español), sus bombachas (un pantalón de equitación) y su inevitable calabaza para el mate (infusión de hierbas de América del Sur que sustituye al café) de la que solo se separan para preparar a los caballos o para montarlos.
Descendants of gauchos, their equitation is straightforward and effective: part domadores (horsebreakers), they are able to obtain from their ponies balance, submission and reactivity with a simplicity which, compared to the thick and scholarly manuals of equestrian art, would take up just two pages. Good equitation, whatever you might say: there is no easier horse to ride than a polo pony; calm, balanced and always with a good mouth.

A polo match is a sporting feat in itself for the petisero: to get the horse ready (and there is a huge amount of tack to put on), warm it up and get it into a frame of mind for the match, let it recover after its chukker, untack it, cool it down... A race against time so the only thing the player has to worry about is to ride his horse and play. When in October the boinas disappear, when the petiseros get on the plane to Buenos Aires, a scent of sadness reigns. The Polo Club has become European again, mundane and faded. You know that winter will be long. It will last until they come back.
Un partido de polo es una auténtica hazaña deportiva para el petisero: preparar al caballo (hay una enorme cantidad de cuero para enjaezar), calentarlo y ponerlo en el ambiente del partido, hacerlo recuperarse tras su chukker, desvestirlo, refrescarlo… una carrera contrarreloj para que el jugador solo tenga una preocupación: montar su caballo y jugar. Cuando en octubre los de las boinas desaparecen, cuando los petiseros toman el vuelo a Buenos Aires, se respira un cierto perfume de nostalgia. The history of the two teams that met at Deauville has many points in common. When Adolfo Cambiaso won his first “Open”, at 19 years of age, it was under the colours of Ellerstina.

Everyone saw in him the gifted one, the future player of the century: 10 handicap that year, in 1994, three months after his first appearance in Deauville, Adolfito became the youngest player in history to discover the joy of raising the trophy of champion of Argentina, and so of the world. Already with Mariano Aguerre at his side (who joined him in La Dolfina in 2005), Carlos Gracida (the only Mexican to have won this title) and his mentor, Gonzalo Pieres (the other great player of the 20th century), the young prodigy’s career took off. The idyll with Ellerstina was to last until 1998 after a third title with, instead of Gracida, his childhood friend, Bartolomé “Lolo” Castagnola. That Ellerstina team was therefore three quarters of today’s La Dolfina.

The departure of Cambiaso and Castagnola, who left to create La Dolfina, was fatal for Ellerstina whose performance as a team suffered. The beginning for La Dolfina was chaotic. The team was heckled by a public who reacted badly to this desire for emancipation. After two failures against the Heguy cousins, Adolfito and Lolo with the Merlos brothers at their side won their first title in 2002 against Indios Chapaleufú II. The team fluctuated for two seasons before it was restructured by taking on Mariano Aguerre (brother-in-law of the Pieres’!) and Lucas Monteverde. In the meantime the (also highly gifted) eldest sons of Gonzalo Pieres had grown up and the latter was able to set up his project to reconstruct a great Ellerstina by calling upon some cousins, the MacDonoughs (Matías would be replaced by Juan-Martin Nero in 2008). Ellerstina reached maturity the same year that La Dolfina found serenity. And so were born the two teams of the start of this century whose meetings are never ordinary. For the moment, La Dolfina leads with two titles to one. What will happen this year? First question: will the legendary Rolex board this year display the names of these eight outstanding titled players, for the first time in the history of the handicap 10. Because never in Palermo has a final been played with two teams with 40 goalers!
La marcha de Cambiaso y de Castagnola para formar el equipo de La Dolfina, fue fatal para Ellerstina, que pasó a ser un equipo con resultados mediocres. Los inicios de La Dolfina fueron caóticos. Ellerstina alcanzó su madurez el mismo año que La Dolfina encontró la serenidad. Así nacieron estos dos equipos de este inicio de siglo cuyos encuentros nunca son banales. Por el momento, La Dolfina gana por dos títulos a uno. ¿Qué pasará este año? The meeting in Deauville stirred up an absolute craze. There were nearly 3000 spectators around the “Normandy” field, on the La Touques racetrack, and nearly 100 journalists watched this game, that has been broadcasted for the first time in the history of polo live on Eurosport in 102 countries. The match lived up to expectations with an indecisive score from beginning to end, although Ellerstina appeared to take the lead with Pablo MacDonough scoring the first goal, an example soon followed by Juan-Martin Nero and Facundo Pieres: 3-0 this was the biggest margin in the match. Adolfo Cambiaso limited the damage by reducing the margin with an easy penalty from 30 yards. Right up until the end of the match, the two teams gave as good as they got with thrilling bouts of topquality play despite Lolo Castagnola’s injury in the second chukker. The incident was not serious (a badly sprained thumb), but led to the discovery of the talent of a young player whom the Deauville public knew well. So it was that Guillermo Terrera was seen for the first time in a La Dolfina shirt and the young Argentine took his fate fully into his hands, playing many fine individual moves for which at the end of the game he was named “Man of the Match”. “He’s a good friend of our team”, explained Adolfo Cambiaso, “and he held his own very well. With him, we were able to keep up with Ellerstina and in the end this match really was on a par with the matches contested by the two teams. It was a tough game today.” Terrera also caused the second big panic of the day when in the fourth chukker, dribbling in mid air, he hit the goal post full-on. Spectacular, but more fright than harm. Thanks to two goals scored at the end of the match, Ellerstina confirmed its title as Argentine champion and Facundo Pieres could not hide his satisfaction with a job well done. “You saw a very close match. I think it was a very enjoyable match to watch, with very few faults and so very few interruptions except for Lolo’s accident which fortunately wasn’t serious. I think it was a great day for polo. Anyway, it’s given us confidence for the coming Argentine season... I think we’ll win the title again next December!!!” And he was completely serious.
El encuentro en Deauville suscitó un verdadero entusiasmo. Había cerca de 3000 espectadores en torno al campo “Normandy”, en el hipódromo de la Touques, y cerca de 100 periodistas siguieron esta primicia retransmitida en directo por Eurosport a 102 países. El partido cumplió sus promesas con un resultado indeciso de principio a fin, si bien al principio del juego Ellerstina parecía querer tomar las riendas del juego de la mano de Pablo McDonough que marcaba el primer tanto, ejemplo seguido muy pronto por Juan Martín Nero y Facundo Pieres: 3-0 fue la mayor diferencia del encuentro. Se ha jugado a un gran nivel hoy.” Terrera dio también el segundo gran susto del día cuando en el cuarto chukker, cuando driblaba en el aire, chocó violentamente con el poste del arco. Espectacular, pero más susto que daño real. Gracias a dos tantos convertidos al final del partido, Ellerstina confirmó su título de campeón de Argentina y Facundo Pieres no ocultaba su satisfacción por el trabajo bien hecho. “Han visto ustedes un partido muy igualado. Creo que ha sido un encuentro agradable para ver, con muy pocas faltas y, por tanto, pocas interrupciones, aparte del incidente de Lolo, felizmente sin consecuencias graves. Creo que ha sido una bonita jornada para el polo. En cualquier caso nos ha dado confianza para la próxima temporada argentina… ¡¡¡creo que vamos a ganar el título otra vez el próximo diciembre!!!”. Todo eso dicho con la máxima seriedad.

Deauville belongs to the history of polo. Although polo was officially born in Deauville in 1907, polo appeared in 1892 on La Touque racetrack. A year before the first Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo was played. It was natural that this place would one day host a match with the best players in the world.
Deauville forma parte de la historia del polo. Si oficialmente el Polo de Deauville nació en 1907, el polo apareció en 1892 en el hipódromo de la Touques. Un año antes de jugarse el primer Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo. Por consiguiente era natural que este lugar acogiese algún día a los mejores jugadores del mundo en un partido.
Because most of these champions have already come to Deauville to play in the Gold Cup. Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan-Martin Nero and Gonzalito Pieres have moreover won it. But this was the first time that two regular Argentine Open teams were to face each other on the “Normandy” cancha. The seaside town on the Normandy coast is a cosy spot, where life is good. And the players of La Dolfina and Ellerstina soon realised this on the terrace of the famous Les Vapeurs restaurant at the old Trouville port. A surprise for the Equestrio team, to see coming to sit down at the next table these eight tremendous players and moreover accompanied, among others, by Gonzalo Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso, the fathers! Over 120 goals handicap at the table!
Porque la mayoría de estos campeones ya habían venido a Deauville para participar en la Copa de Oro. Además Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan Martín Nero y Gonzalito Pieres la ganaron. Sin embargo era la primera vez que dos equipos regulares del Open de Argentina iban a enfrentarse en la cancha “Normandy”. La ciudad turística de la costa normanda es un lugar agradable, donde la vida es hermosa. Y los jugadores de La Dolfina y del Ellerstina enseguida lo entendieron así al encontrarse en la terraza del célebre restaurante “Les Vapeurs” (Los Vapores), en el viejo puerto de Trouville. ¡Vaya sorpresa para el equipo del Equestrio cuando vieron sentarse en la mesa de al lado a estos ocho grandes jugadores y bien acompañados por, entre otros, Gonzado Pieres y Adolfo Cambiaso… padres! ¡Más de 120 goles de hándicap sentados a la mesa!
Two days later, the menu was quite different: a match where for the first time two polo teams tot up 40 goals each. Around the field, the nine Eurosport cameras are ready to roll. Concern because nasty rain from Brittany started to fall on Normandy at the beginning of the afternoon and the match cannot be delayed because European TV does not allow for this kind of setback. At the pony lines, the players are rather calm and relaxed. Yet questioned that morning at a press conference, they have not come to spare each other. It is not going to be a show; they have each brought their best horses from England, especially the Pieres who have just bought a batch of “Ferraris” from their former Australian patron James Packer. A small disappointment as regards the public: there were 5000 places ready for the spectators who, put off by the rain, only numbered 3000. It is a record in Deauville for a polo match, but the event deserved better: the European public needs to get to know this exceptional polo. The match was to start at 15.00 hours – the rain stopped at 14.58 h! The event was blessed by the gods of polo. The match was gripping.

Hay cierta preocupación porque una fea lluvia llegada de Bretaña ha empezado a caer sobre Normandía al principio de la tarde y es imposible aplazar el partido porque la televisión europea no tiene en cuenta este tipo de contratiempos. En los palenques, los jugadores están más bien serenos, incluso relajados. Sin embargo, cuando se les preguntó por la mañana en la conferencia de prensa, dijeron no venir a hacerse regalitos.
