Saying ‘I do’

Nationally, public opinion is clearly turning to the side of love and equality. In May 2012, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed 53 percent of Americans believe same-sex couples should be able to marry — up from only 36 percent six years earlier. Yet marriage equality remains an uphill battle here at home. I covered the ugly 2004 fight to add a ban on same-sex marriage to Georgia’s constitution and hope that I am around to cover the first gay couples to legally wed in our state. But in the meantime, Atlanta Gay Weddings celebrates what every LGBT couple already knows: We don’t need a license to fall in love. Though we will continue to advocate for the same rights and benefits afforded to heterosexual spouses, each one of the couples featured in this magazine is already married, regardless of whether the government recognizes it. Good luck to you in your marriage, and to all of us as we keep fighting for full equality.

Thomas and Chris Ryan-Lawrence’s love story began in May 2009, when they met through a mutual friend. “We love our story because we actually got to know each other as friends before we dated,” Thomas says. “We didn’t officially start dating until October of 2009.” Chris proposed to Thomas in March 2011, surprising him by getting down on one knee 14,000 feet in the air: on top of Vail Mountain in Colorado. They were engaged for 14 months, “barely enough time for Thomas to plan the big wedding he’s dreamed about 6

since he was a 14-year-old boy reading Vogue under the covers at night,” says Chris. The lush greenery at Atlanta Botanical Garden provided a verdant backdrop for Chris and Thomas when they wed at the lauded property on May 20, 2012. During an early evening outdoor ceremony, the couple entered from opposite sides of the Rose Garden, escorted by their mothers, then met in the middle and walked down together to symbolize the two families joining. The entire wedding party, parents and grooms included, were outfitted in chocolate and blue, a combination of Chris’ eclectic taste and Thomas’ traditional leanings. In the final hours of a May morning, Sarah Neuburger and Dawn Sarmiento exchanged lakeside vows in front of a close-knit group of 40 family members and friends at Mistletoe State Park in Appling, Ga. All the guests walked down toward the lake for the ceremony, including nieces and a nephew who carried white balloons as a pseudo-processional. “They were our balloon people and loved it!” says Dawn. Max Jerome Green and Jamie Green-Fergerson were so enthralled with each other during their first real conversation that they sat outside in the rain all night while they talked. They’ve been captivated with each other ever since. They dated for almost two years before getting engaged, and enjoyed an 18-month-long engagement before tying the knot in a fall wedding at one of Atlanta’s iconic wedding destinations. The couple — Max, a queer transman, and Jamie, a queer woman — wed in the evening at Park Tavern in a ceremony that personified them as individuals and as partners in life and love. “I think our ceremony was the perfect blend of ritual and nonconformity,” says Max, who walked up the aisle by himself, followed by Jamie. “My ‘lesbian parents,’ our dear friends Sheila and AT, officiated our wedding and wrote a good bit of the ceremony. My sisters did a fantastic reading of ‘Falling In Love Is Like Owning A Dog,’ by Taylor Mali, and my brother-in-law sang ‘The Book of Love’ by The Magnetic Fields, 14

The lovebirds wrote their own vows, which they read to each other, and walked out to Johnny Cash and June Carter’s “Darlin’ Companion.” The partners each had five attendants, who they allowed to choose their own attire for the day within a defined blue spectrum. “We had people of many gender presentations in our party and wanted them all to wear something that felt comfortable,” Jamie says. Jamie and Max decorated their reception in a spectrum of greens and blues, and incorporated things that bring them joy: books, squirrels, trees and photographs of people they love. Park Tavern catered the breakfast-for-dinner buffet. The celebratory meal for Max and Jamie’s 120 guests was finished with 12 round cakes in different flavors from Southern Sweets Bakery. The man behind the veil Every week, viewers tune in to TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” and “Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids” to see Monte Durham and the rest of the Bridals by Lori team help brides and their ’maids find the look of their wedding dreams. Founded 33 years ago, Bridals by Lori is the largest full-service bridal salon in the United States, and Durham has worked there for the last 10 years. who want to show off their curves, but just don’t want to wear a gown? Fit, fit, fit. For anyone buying a suit, look at the sleeve length, a ¼-inch of cuff should be showing now. Make sure the sleeve is tapered at the wrist and the jacket is not too long. Be measured and ensure a tight fit — with room to boogie. For women, again, make sure the suit is set on your shoulders, bust darts match up and there’s room for your bust. Also not a cummerbund; instead try a nice vest with a smaller buckle if you’re short-waisted. What is it like filming two shows at the shop? Filming two shows in one space can be challenging, but where else can I work with my best friend, be surrounded by beautiful dresses and have my hair and makeup done? What has been one of your biggest highlights while filming the shows? Meeting all the great brides and hearing their stories, sad or happy. It’s great to share and see and work with the diversity and pride of all who grace our doorstep. Any final words you’d like to leave us with? If you love a certain food, have specific dietary restraints, or even have a favorite color or passion for a particular flower, we help you express that vision. What are five key things to keep in mind when planning a wedding reception? 1. Have realistic expectations from the start. Every couple dreams of a fantasy wedding, but that does not mean the budget is consistent with the vision. 2. It’s a family affair! We keep in mind that every single guest must be made to feel welcomed and comfortable until the very last dance. 3. Select the right venue. Each venue has its own personality. 4. Timing is everything. Manage your event as if launching a rocket ship. A wedding is a skyhigh event with emotions on the rise and everyone expecting out-of-this-world responses. 5. Stay calm in the storm. The key is to make it look effortless. What’s the No. 1 mistake couples make when planning their reception? The biggest is that there is always a budget and there should be up-front conversations about this before beginning the planning. Is there anything you’d like to add? We feel so very fortunate to have the continued longtime respect and appreciation from the LGBT community. For the past few seasons, designers have been prepping us for this look with collections that were peppered with double-breasted blazers and the occasional double-breasted suit, but for spring 2013, the trend is in full effect. For daytime nuptials, Saboura recommends a checked or textured fabric in classic gray or navy and for evenings, stick to the basic black. “It’s a rich, sophisticated look so your finishes and accessories should be, too,” he adds. The pinstripe suit is everywhere but there is nothing subtle about the look. “This is not your Wall Street pinstripe — though you can go there, too, if you’re not a huge risk-taker,” says Saboura. “I love this stylish nod to the Roaring ’20s.” Salvatore Ferragamo shows pinstripes can be played up or down, depending on the statement you want to make.

Last season, the first bridal tuxedos made an appearance at Sarah Jassir and Theia, and this upcoming season, two other major design houses, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, have followed suit. “More so than ever, whether it’s two brides getting married or a bride and groom or two grooms, everyone wants something unique and special, and everyone wants to feel like they have a custom piece, and you can really get that look with the pantsuit,” says Hall. Ask any photographer and she or he will be quick to tell you that photo lenses are not kind to skin. including pets in your wedding When John Merriman and his fiance, Adam Cohen, tie the knot in May, they’ll have very important (furry) friends on the guest list: Carmen, their mini wirehaired dachshund, and her three puppies, as well as their rescued smooth dachshund and Italian greyhound. “Dogs seem to have a great way of unifying people with their unconditional love, and on one of the happiest and most important days of our lives, it seems so natural to include them,” Merriman says. And they’re not alone in including their brood of breeds in their big day. According to a recent survey by the American Kennel Club, having pets present is one of the fastest growing trends in the wedding industry, with close to 18 percent of dog owners including their four-legged family members. “Our dog Shiloh was our ring bearer,” says Sharda Roodal, who incorporated her and her wife Anna’s terrier in their September 2011 wedding. “We love him so much and couldn’t leave him on our big day.” And it’s not limited to just the canine cult. Loving pet owners have included their cats, goats, horses, pot-bellied pigs and even chickens. “Most people truly think of their pets as family, so it only seems natural to include them in their special day,” says Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow, a company that offers doggy day camp, at-home services and behavioral training in Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs. “Weddings are all about making your family official and having a great time. Pets relieve stress and add a playful aspect to the ceremony.” And the increase in wedding-party pets has created a new wave of accessories that are aisle worthy, from pet petal pull carts to tiny veils and toppers. But while a pup in a tux is sure to delight guests, Ganahl warns of ensuring the costume doesn’t constrict breathing or movement. 40

“A decorative leash is a great option for pets participating in weddings, as this is something that your pet is probably already accustomed to,” she says. Of course, having man’s best friend as the best man takes additional planning and you should always take your pet’s personality into consideration before enlisting him or her in wedding party duties. “To prevent an overly hyper dog at your wedding, allow him to run, play and exert lots of energy during the days leading up to the wedding,” Ganahl says. “If your pet is nervous around strangers, limit his role and have him leave after the ceremony. If you have a friendly dog, allow him to stay for the reception.” Before your furry friend’s aisle debut, ensure that your venue allows animals and work with your pet at the location in the weeks following up to the main event. “Allow him to practice walking down the aisle and reward him with a treat afterward,” suggests Ganahl. To prevent allergic reactions, warn guests of your untraditional attendant and, on the wedding day, enlist a chaperone to take on the responsibility of caring for your pet. “Weddings are a big deal and very distracting,” says Ganahl. “If you do not believe that constant supervision of your pet is possible, then it is best to leave them at home or at a dog daycare.” — Brittny Drye

A chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together, and while it is based in Jewish tradition, anyone can have one at their wedding. Traditionally, it’s used in outdoor ceremonies and consists of cloth or another fabric stretched out over four poles. Newlyweds Beth Kimberly and Deborah Serota wanted a do-it-yourself chuppah as a part of their outdoor summer wedding, so they asked Kimberly’s sister, Erin Kate Elwood, who makes personalized gifts for parents with her business Erin Kate Creations, to create the chuppah for them. Elwood says she was flattered by the brides’ request. “I was honored that they wanted to include my personal touch in their nuptials and honored that they thought enough of my talents that I could bring their artistic vision into reality,” says Elwood. The couple asked Elwood to work within three guidelines: keep the image of two trees growing together, which was a theme in their wedding; keep with their colors of white, brown and green; and the cover needed to fit the structure that Kimberly built, measuring 6-by-6 feet. Here are Elwood’s instructions on how she created the DIY chuppah: 1. On graph paper, I sketched a rough drawing of how the finished product should look. The grid of the graph paper helped me calculate how much of each fabric I would need to buy. 2. I purchased linens (actually from the suiting section) in natural white, warm brown and mossy green. I picked up a faint olive green allpurpose Sulky thread for piecing together the various parts of the chuppah cover; for the blue and purple, I chose Gutterman machine embroidery threads (to be used for decorative stitching). 3. and ran a gathering stitch down the middle of each for a bit of visual interest. Using both the blue and purple threads together, I handembroidered their wedding date 7.1.12 on one special leaf. In cutting the billowing-tree form, I tapered it a bit in the middle to show the two trees having grown together into one. I also cut a strip of green for the grass. 4. I then cut both trunks and a strip of brown for the ground. The tree trunks were each sewn with the decorative thread (one trunk with blue, the other with purple). I sewed freeform several lines of bark and even a swirl knot in each trunk. 5. After laying everything out together, layer upon layer, I pinned the pieces down like crazy and then used a simple decorative zigzag stitch around the perimeter of each piece. 6. I sewed a large button hole in each corner so the chuppah cover could be tied with ribbon to the top of the base posts. In the end, I had to hand-stitch a strip of ribbon to one side as well to hold the cover up properly. Elwood says she kept Kimberly and Serota’s symbolic theme of two trees coming together as she constructed the chuppah. She used linen because its natural weave represents life’s flaws and unique beauty; she used brown on bottom to represent the ground and green to represent the foundation of family who came before; and each leaf represents a parent, sibling, or grandparent pair. Elwood said she found creating this chuppah to be a “blessing” and enjoyed learning about Jewish traditions. “Most importantly though,” Elwood says, “I was able to give a piece of myself to shelter my sisters as they exchanged vows and began their marriage.” — Lucy Hough

Georgia Equality (www.georgiaequality.org), the state’s largest LGBT political group, offers an easy place to download the health care directive. 44

Georgia has banned gay marriage twice — by law in 1996 and by an amendment to the state constitution in 2004. That means you’ll have to travel if you want to wed where your marriage is legally recognized. But since neither Georgia nor the federal government will acknowledge gay marriages from other states, you won’t bring any new legal rights home from your trip. So whether you choose to legally marry outside of Georgia or tie the knot in a ceremony here at home, you need to take steps to protect your relationship. Every couple’s situation is unique, so your best bet is to consult with an attorney about what legal documents will help secure your relationship. The Georgia Stonewall Bar Association (www.stonewallbar.org) is a group for legal professionals who support LGBT rights; its online directory includes many attorneys who specialize in domestic partnerships. You can also seek help from Georgia Benefits Counsel (www.georgiabenefitscounsel.org), a nonprofit organization created to provide low-cost legal services to Georgians in same-sex relationships. Services include simple wills, financial powers of attorney and advance directives for health care; the cost is only what you would pay for a marriage license in your county. You still won’t come close to the more than 1,100 benefits of marriage under federal law, but here are four documents that can help protect your partnership. Your attorney may also recommend others.

FINANCIAL POWER OF ATTORNEY

This document allows you to designate someone (like your partner) to make financial decisions for you, either immediately or if you should become incapacitated. This can be very helpful for your partner if you become seriously ill or disabled and your assets are needed to maintain your home and care.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

If you die without a will, your assets go to your legal heirs — and here in Georgia, that means your family, not your partner. A will lets you spell out exactly how you want your property divided and makes sure the person you love isn’t left out in the cold. It also lets you name who you want to be the guardian of your children.

PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT
