WELCOME On behalf of Equal Justice Works and our partners, welcome to the 2011 Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair. Ever since we were founded in 1986, we have happily watched the demand for public interest law curricula, loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs) and opportunities grow on campuses as more and more students expressed their desire to help communities that need it most. Our first career fair in 1988 attracted just a few hundred students from approximately 70 law schools. This year, a record 2,500 students from our 200 member law schools have registered for our event! Today, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of Equal Justice Works, public interest law is facing difficult challenges. Poverty is up, the justice gap is growing, legal aid and public defender budgets are shrinking, and the job market is weak. On top of that, the level of educational debt is growing, causing financial constraints that make it even more difficult for students to consider public interest careers. Now, more than ever, Equal Justice Works is determined to help students interested in public interest careers pursue their dreams. The Conference and Career Fair can provide you with some of the tools you will need to succeed, so take advantage of the offerings. • Attend the Plenary to hear a conversation between two of the top lawyers in the nation – U.S. Solicitor General Don Verrilli and U.S. Judge David Tatel of the D.C. Circuit – about their public interest experiences. • Attend the skills workshops; they offer invaluable tips on how to land a public interest job and how to organize more effectively on your campus. • Go to panels to hear about lawyers working on cutting edge public interest issues. • Learn about our educational debt relief programs on Friday at 4:45 p.m., and on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. • Connect with as many employers as you can at Table Talk. • Make sure you stop by the Equal Justice Works table to learn more about our Summer Corps and Fellowship programs, and the opportunities they provide for hands-on public interest law experience. Perhaps most importantly, network with your peers, learn what they are doing on their campuses and what opportunities they may have to share. I want to thank the faculty and staff from our member law schools who continue to work with us to spread the word about public interest opportunities. Without their help and support, our Conference and Career Fair would not be possible. Thank you for joining us. This conference is for and about you—the next generation of public interest lawyers and leaders. When you return to your campus, we hope you will keep in touch on Facebook and Twitter so you can stay informed of the latest developments in public interest law. Sincerely,

David Stern Executive Director Equal Justice Works

The professionals will offer constructive suggestions for making your job search documents stand out. These sessions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

WORKSHOPS Demystifying the Government Hiring Process Lincoln 3

As the largest U.S. employer, the Federal Government employs over 2 million civilian employees, of which about 85 percent work outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. A substantial number of job openings will arise as many federal workers are expected to retire over the next decade. Despite this, the government hiring process seems daunting. Join us as we discuss the ins and outs of searching, applying and interviewing for government jobs and using www.usajobs.opm.gov. • Nicole Schultheis, Certified Federal Job Search Trainer for the Resume Place

Helping Those Who Served: Addressing the Legal Needs of Veterans Wilson C, Mezzanine

Veterans face higher levels of unemployment, incarceration and homelessness than the population at large. This session is designed to provide basic information for anyone who may have veterans as clients. The session will include an overview discussion on legal issues facing military families, learn about existing resources and case law, and focus on effective models and appropriate interaction with poor and homeless veterans, including the work by Equal Justice Works Fellows. • Sara Sommarstrom, Vetlaw Director for the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow Alumnae • Edward Neusteter, 2010 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow for County of San Diego Office of the Public Defender

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Law and Organizing: Two Professions are Better Than One Lincoln 4

All successful social change movements use a combination of tactics: mass media, litigation, gentle persuasion and direct action. In this session, hear from attorneys and organizers who are working together to achieve what neither of them could achieve alone. The session will cover: What is community organizing? Why should you and how can you work with community organizers? What are times when you shouldn’t or can’t work together? The session will use real world examples from attorneys and organizers at CASA de Maryland, one of the largest immigrant service and advocacy groups in the country. Lawyers and organizers have worked together successfully (and sometimes not successfully - they’ll talk about that, too) to combat the criminalization of immigration, respond to immigration raids, promote affordable housing policy, pass the Maryland DREAM Act, protect drivers license access for undocumented residents and other workplace abuses. • Nestor Alvarenga, Montgomery County Lead Organizer for CASA de Maryland • Zorayda Moreira-Smith, Staff Attorney for CASA de Maryland • Amy Vruno, Associate Organizer for the Washington Interfaith Network, 2002 Equal Justice Works Fellow

Your Personal IPO: Taking Yourself Public to the World to Get the Job of Your Dreams

Lincoln 2

Whether you plan to start your own firm, be a star in-house associate, or put your law degree to work in the nonprofit sector as a future executive director, the most important factor in your career success stems from your ability to manage and hone your “personal brand.” Your personal brand is what you are known for - the special value you provide to a team, an organization, or a project. Everyone has a personal brand. During this extremely informative and highly interactive session, you will learn how to assess your personal brand attributes, package them in a compelling offer, and promote these attributes to potential employers. Attendees will leave with tools for determining their key brand qualities and creative suggestions for packaging and marketing them in the marketplace. If you don’t brand yourself, someone else will. • Joey Coleman, Chief Experience Composer for Design Symphony

KEYNOTE Advancing Justice in Private and Public Practice A discussion with U.S. Solicitor General Donald J. Verrilli, Jr. and Judge David Tatel Lincoln 5 & 6

This year’s plenary will be a discussion between Judge David Tatel and U.S. Solicitor General Donald J. Verrilli, Jr., two great lawyers who have worked for the public interest in both government and the private sector. They will share their experiences and advice about how to use a law degree to advance justice in private and public practice.

Mr. Verrilli was confirmed Solicitor General in June 2011. Immediately before becoming Solicitor General, he served as Deputy White House Counsel, and Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Department of Justice. Prior to joining the Administration, Mr. Verrilli was a partner at Jenner & Block where he specialized in Supreme Court and appellate litigation. While in private practice, Mr. Verrilli always handled significant pro bono matters, including several death penalty appeals and cases involving criminal defendants’ rights.

Judge Tatel has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit since 1994. Immediately after graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, Judge Tatel went to work at Sidley & Austin, and left to become the founding director of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He then became Director of the Office for Civil Rights of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare during the Jimmy Carter Administration. He joined Hogan & Hartson in 1979, where he founded and headed the firm’s education practice until his appointment to the D.C. Circuit. Judge Tatel serves on the board of Equal Justice Works.

Consumer law issues impact all communities, so this session will be relevant to your work regardless of your primary practice area. The FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection works to prevent fraud, deception and unfair business practices in the marketplace. The agency has launched a Legal Services Collaboration project with the goal of better addressing fraud that affects poor and underserved communities by strengthening connections with legal service providers and consumer advocates across the country. Many of those involved in the FTC’s Legal Services Initiative are former direct legal services providers and are aware of the numerous challenges you face. The presenters will outline the resources the FTC has to offer to assist you in your work. They also want to hear from you about what is going on in the communities you serve, and hope to brainstorm with you about creative ways to work together. • Kati Daffan, Attorney, Division of Marketing Practices for the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection • Monica Vaca, Assistant Director, Division of Marketing Practices for the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, 1998 Equal Justice Works Fellow

But where do you get the experience if no one will hire you until you have experience? ABOUT EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS The mission of Equal Justice Works is to create a just society by mobilizing the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice. We provide leadership to ensure a sustainable pipeline of talented and trained lawyers involved in public service. Equal Justice Works provides a continuum of programs that begin with incoming law school students and extend into later careers in the profession. We provide the nation’s leading public interest law fellowship program and offer more postgraduate, full-time legal positions in public service than any other organization. For 25 years, Equal Justice Works has collaborated with the nation’s leading law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofit organizations to provide the training and skills that enable attorneys to provide effective representation to vulnerable populations. We: • Help law schools establish and strengthen public interest programs; • Provide public service work experience, professional development and training for students and lawyers; and • Build strong support in the legal profession for public service through pro bono work and financial support.

CONTINUUM OF OPPORTUNITY The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellowship Program is one of the most productive and highly regarded national service programs in the nation. This AmeriCorps program makes a lasting impact on the communities it serves by facilitating pro bono opportunities and expanding the legal resources in low-income and underserved communities. The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program is another AmeriCorps program that provides law students with the opportunity to dedicate their summer to public service at qualifying nonprofit and public interest legal organizations. The Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program is the largest postgraduate legal fellowship program in the nation and creates partnerships among public interest lawyers, nonprofit organizations, law firm/corporate sponsors and other donors in order to afford underrepresented populations effective access to the justice system. Celebrating

The Public Defender Corps is a new initiative launched in partnership with the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC) to combat the growing problem of underfunded and understaffed Public Defender Offices. Offering an alternative to traditional rankings, The Equal Justice Works Guide to Law Schools is structured so that schools can highlight their clinics, externships, career services, affordability, financial aid and public service programs. Our annual Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair attracts thousands of students and lawyers exploring career options with leading nonprofit organizations as well as federal government agencies. Equal Justice Works has taken a leadership role in educating students and their advisors on the provisions of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act and other programs that provide educational debt relief to students pursuing careers in the public sector. Learn more about our programs and opportunities at www.equaljusticeworks.org or scan the code below.
