Great people are at the heart of all great businesses and a strength of Smiths Detection is its 2,400 people who contribute on a daily basis to meeting our customers' expectations. Their qualities range from crosscultural experience to technological and scientific expertise. Smiths Detection succeeds because of its people.

Technologies that protect Science and technology lie at the heart of smart detection systems. Smiths Detection puts laboratory science into the hands of security professionals, in products developed for the real world. The globalisation of our society is totally dependent on secure travel and the free flow of goods, safeguarded against terrorism and criminality. The aviation industry and transport operators, placing the highest priority on safety and security, are striving to retain passenger confidence in their travel systems. The general public is now facing up to threats that once concerned only our armed forces and public service workers. Our emergency responders are confronted with unknown threats every time they attend an incident. Our police forces and customs officers are challenged by a rising tide of illicit narcotics and contraband.

We also apply the experience that has been gained over more than half a century. In the application of these technologies Smiths Detection is a world-leader. Our systems safeguard those in the front line and the public at large; we protect buildings and transport systems; we screen everything from a ticket to a truck. Our customer commitment does not stop at providing the latest detection technologies. We support all products with levels of service that ensure every operator realises maximum performance and value. Our unique combination of technologies results in a range of products only Smiths Detection is capable of supplying. For a safer world.

In support of all these situations Smiths Detection offers complete solutions, using advanced technology.

Our core technologies X-ray technology, developed to provide operators with images offering the most detailed resolution and the best possible material representation based on the colour gradation, as well as to provide most efficient automatic threat detection in combination with signal processing. Trace detection, based Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), an instrumental analytical method of detecting trace amounts of chemical like particles of explosives or narcotics Biological detection and identification for rapid field application in place of traditional laboratory tests. Our

systems use LATE-PCR, an advanced form of asymmetric polymerase chain reaction, the technique that amplifies copies of a piece of DNA. Millimetre-wave (non-ionizing radiation) lie in the spectral region between radio waves and infrared, capable of passing transparently through lightweight materials such as clothing fabrics, to detect concealed objects. Gamma ray spectroscopy identifies radiological gamma sources, capturing gamma photons and converting them to measurable energy and forming a spectrum. Used

to identify and to pin-point radiological gamma isotopes smuggled in containers. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) an analytical technique to identify unknown chemicals, measuring each chemical’s unique ‘molecular fingerprint’. Raman spectroscopy identifies unknown chemicals by recording how their uniquely vibrating molecular bonds scatter incident laser light into distinct frequencies. It complements FT-IR through its ability to penetrate containers holding potentially dangerous substances.

Transportation security Protecting transport systems from acts of terror presents unique security challenges. Our systems lie at the heart of the layered approach to transportation security. Smiths Detection has long been committed to eliminating threats at airports and on-board aircraft, helping to maintain public confidence in the safety of air travel. The combination of our principal technologies results in systems to detect explosives, weapons and illegal items in baggage or on passengers themselves. Or on staff. We support the security professionals by giving them the best tools for the job. Development of the aTiX group of X-ray systems provided the first automatic detection of explosives in hand baggage. We added the iLane baggage conveyor system as an approach to checkpoint security that adds fast, passenger friendly and cost efficient processes to the highest levels of security. The application of new technologies such as millimetre wave will further transform the security checkpoint.

In busy transport terminals, passenger throughput, accuracy of detection and low false alarm rates (false positives) are critical requirements. Smiths Detection applies its experience and its technology to achieve these goals. Supporting all our sales activity is a comprehensive and global service operation. A full range of service agreements ensures maximum efficiency for customers, with programs that eliminate unplanned maintenance and emergency expenses. Ports & borders Customs and border protection requirements are constantly evolving. Traditional fiscal roles continue, such as the collection of excise duties, but there is now additional emphasis on the identification of threats to local and national security – a first line of defence against possible insurgent attacks. The priorities have moved from monitoring cross-border cargo and reducing international shipments of contraband, to screening for explosives, arms, dirty bombs and weapons of mass destruction. Identifying these threats is increasingly more difficult. Terrorists have become more creative in their methods of delivery and disguise. Whether the threat is strategically hidden inside a vehicle or concealed in the middle of the shipment, the challenge is rapid detection without disrupting the daily flow of goods.

The addition of new technologies, including radiation detection and material discrimination ensure a product range to meet the demanding requirements of security initiatives worldwide. Smiths Detection HCV X-ray systems have set the industry standard in cargo inspection for more than 20 years. They are available in various forms, from mobile units ready for use on all terrains in less than 30 minutes up to fixed, high-volume installations. We provide a total solution for security inspection or full manifest verification in fully loaded trucks and sea freight containers. In all cases, high throughput and speedy image analysis create huge advantages over manual inspections. Damage to freight is also avoided a constant problem with items such as perishable foods, where delays can be costly. Investment in HCV systems can be quickly recouped by revealing undeclared goods that generate additional excise duties. The latest development and a major step forward in security is RadSeeker, a handheld, portable, radioisotope detector and identifier. It has been specifically designed to meet the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mission requirements for a next-generation system capable of detecting and identifying nuclear threat materials hidden in containers.

Critical infrastructure An essential element of homeland security in every country is protection of the critical infrastructure - the institutions and essential services, power generators and government establishments, key buildings and distribution networks that are essential to everyday life. All are vital to a nation’s well-being and defence, the functioning of government and the welfare of its citizens. Any disruption to continuity of operation can be paralysing or catastrophic. Lax security is not an option In all of these locations, a security checkpoint at the front entrance of a building is only the starting point. Securing other critical access points and the networked observation of the whole facility is essential. Smiths Detection brings together its range of technologies to provide the most comprehensive security solution available today. From the enhancement of existing access control checkpoints, through mail screening, to the 24/7 monitoring of HVAC systems, we have engineered a portfolio of products and systems to secure access points against specific threats, whether accidental or deliberate. Smiths Detection security solutions for facility protection include systems that detect and identify chemical and biological agents, toxic industrial chemicals, explosives, weapons and narcotics. We add further layers of security through sensor management and network control.
