Meet clean water needs, open job opportunities DEVELOPMENT in Bali has not been prevalent. As a result, the welfare of people is imbalanced. Even, the income gap between the rich and the poor is getting wider. damaged and not been repaired. Rural village roads had been totally damaged like the ring road from the west of Gunaksa, Ababi to Dulunsampih, Abang subdistrict. Meanwhile, the road to the hamlets at mountainous area of Ban such as the road to SDN Ban primary school at Padangasah and to Manikaji had not been paved, either. Chairman of the Karangasem House, I Gede Dana, said the House had recommended in order that Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg could soon find a solution to operate the dormant projects over the years. The project of cattle market at Pempatan village, Rendang, should be activated. Similarly, the Manggis art market and Tanah Ampo cruise harbor spending much budget of Karangasem County, Bali Province and central government reaching more than IDR 150 billion should be immediately operated. Besides, the spring pipeline project from the Telaga Waja River costing more than IDR 120 billion should be enabled more quickly. So far, added Gede Dana, though it had been worked on since three years ago, the project could not be functioned and the water did not flow so that the water could not be enjoyed by people facing clean water crisis. “Pipeline project of the Telaga Waja water should not only become a pipe installation project. Up to these days, the water drainage project has not been followed up, whereas the community is waiting for the water,” said Gede Dana. (bud)

A total of six windmills used for wind power plant (PLTB) built on Bukit Mundi, Klumpu village, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, have turned dormant since it was completed in 2007. Existence of the windmills threatens the safety of local residents because the condition is neglected and the beams used to support the tower are worried to collapse and can topple over residents and pilgrims coming to worship to Puncak Mundi Temple at Klumpu. Such concerns were conveyed by headman of Klumpu, Kadek Suarta, Friday (May 10). He added that condition of the windmill was already getting rusty and made local residents increasingly alarmed. Moreover, some of the windmill

Although Alaya Ubud is a relatively small boutique resort, there are some pretty significant names associated with its initial concept and design. Owning company, de daun Group, had the good fortune to collaborate with the very best in the business and this is evident today in the overall look and ambience of the property. Alaya Ubud was designed exclusively by Grounds Kent Architects (GKA), an award-winning company responsible for iconic resorts such as Four Seasons Jimbaran and St. Regis Bali. For the past 20 years GKA have designed culturally unique projects across Asia and beyond with an emphasis of creating a “sense of place”. GKA envisioned a design for Alaya Ubud that is a modern interpretation of Bali’s local building culture. Different kinds of indigenous materials have been used both structurally and aesthetically resulting in a concept that is attuned to the surrounding environment. There is also a playful use of bamboo throughout the entire property along with innovative examples of island-inspired artistry.

The landscape at Alaya Ubud is the work of Made Wijaya, Bali’s very own authority on tropical gardens. He has executed a simple design with random plantings of native Balinese flora together with artistic outdoor elements. It is a concept that does not detract from the gentle beauty of the neighbouring rice terrace. There is no outer fence to hinder the views of this natural setting. Guests can experience the wonders of nature as the adjacent field changes from a rich shade of green to gold with each passing season. A delightful Bamboo Bar by the pool with a traditionally thatched roof is also by Made Wijaya. So too is a collection of oversized wooden cowbells that have been transformed into innovative light fixtures. These

can be seen throughout the property as well as at Petani restaurant and the front lobby. DaLa Spa and Petani restaurant at Alaya Ubud have been expertly styled by Moroccanborn interior decorator Zohra Boukhari. She has been working in Bali for the past 12 years and is known for her use of rich textiles, vintage-inspired furnishings and mood-enhancing lighting. Zohra travels extensively for hospitality projects all over the world. Together with her husband, she is co-founder and designer of Shahinaz Collection specializing in soft furnishings. Zohra was responsible for the timeless boudoir interior of DaLa Spa in Kuta, a look that contributed to numerous international awards. At Alaya Ubud her signature touches are evident throughout and it is the meticulous attention to detail that gives her design aesthetic a unique edge. Her creative endeavours are also supported

by Hishem Furniture, which supplies quality furnishings to more than 30 countries. Alaya Ubud essentially has been designed with sensitivity towards its immediate environment, which is a long stretch of land that gradually descends

To equalize welfare

In order to equalize the development and welfare of people, in Karangasem needs to be opened wider job opportunities. Village markets have to be empowered. If necessary, it should be established an integrated market so that people’s access to market their agricultural products and livestock will be increasingly widespread. A legislator of the Karangasem House, I Nyoman Sadra, said that to equalize the development and welfare, they should be provided with job opportunities. All this time, there were much hidden and obvious unemployment as well as many poor people and beggars because no job opportunities were available at the village. Not to mention, the area remained barren and people regularly faced clean water crisis. Komang Cengkeb from Buana Giri, Karangasem, said though his village was being exploited for quarry C, in fact the community at Butus and Buana Giri, including at Badeg, Sogra at Sebudi village, remained to face clean water crisis. Even, some residents of Buana Giri and other villages made a visit to Bali Post bureau to ask for information about job opportunities not long ago. There was no job opportunity at their village. “It is hard to find a job,” said a man from Linggasana, Bebandem, Saturday. Aside from the difficulty to get a job, many roads in Karangasem had not been or already been paved a dozen years ago, but now had been

towers were located at roadside leading to Puncak Mundi temple. He urged the parties involved in the construction of the windmill to review the dormant project. “If they cannot be functioned, they will be better to be dismantled. Conversely, if they can still be used, there must be a clarity who will be managing it and what its designation is,” he said. He said there were nine windmills at Klumpu village. Of the total amount, two windmills were built first and then followed by seven others by the Ministry of the Energy and Mineral Resources and PLN Bali. Since the beginning, the construction of wind power plant was a little weird. It was said if the officers made no socialization to village officials and surrounding

residents, so that only few people knew about the designation of the wind power plant. Upon the completion, the operation was also said to be unclear, so that people were reluctant to operate with the plant because they had no competence. Reportedly, construction of the wind power plant on Bukit Mundi was an activity prepared ahead of the UN Convention on Climate Change a few years ago. At that time, of the seven units established, three units respectively had the capacity of 85 kilowatts (KW), while the four other units had 80 KW. It was said to realize the Nusa Penida as a renewable energy tourism village. Suarta hoped to meet with the parties having established the wind power plant and hoped they could be functioned. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
