Knicks rally to overrun Nets 100-97 Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks came from 17 points down to beat Brooklyn 100-97 on Tuesday, boosting their lead atop the NBA Eastern Conference standings and inflicting a fifth successive defeat on the suddenly struggling Nets. Elsewhere on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Clippers brought up their longest winning streak for two decades while their crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers saw their season lurch closer to crisis with a defeat at the hands of lowly Cleveland. New York’s Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 45 points while 39-year-old point guard Jason Kidd made the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. Kidd finished with 18 points against his former team, who used to dominate the Knicks when he played in New Jersey. Now the series is tied at 1-1 since the Nets moved to Brooklyn, both games coming down to a tense finale. Brooklyn’s Andray Blatche scored 23 points in place of Brook Lopez, who missed his sixth straight game with a sprained right foot. Deron Williams and Gerald Wallace both missed potential tying 3-pointers on the last possession after Kidd broke a 97-97 tie with his 3-pointer from the left side while being fouled. The Clippers made it seven straight wins with a 94-89 road

victory over the Chicago Bulls, with Blake Griffin having 22 points and 10 rebounds. Chicago’s Marco Belinelli hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute left to cut the deficit to 89-87, but Chris Paul answered with a floater in the lane, then sealed the win with three free throws. Paul finished with 18 points. Carlos Boozer had 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls. The Clippers have spent their history in the shadow of the Lakers, but this year it seems the gold-and-purple will play the role of Los Angeles’ second team. The Lakers lost 100-94 to the Cleveland Cavaliers, making it eight defeats in 11 games. Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving scored 28 points in his return after missing 11 games with a broken finger, and

added 11 assists in 39 minutes for a team that had lost their five previous games. C.J. Miles scored 28 in his first start this season for the Cavs. Kobe Bryant scored 42 points but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lakers from losing to a Cleveland team that came in with just four wins. Like the Knicks, the Denver Nuggets overcame a 17-point deficit to overrun the Detroit Pistons 101-94. Ty Lawson had 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Nuggets while Corey Brewer added 15 points. Brandon Knight had 20 points and five assists for the Pistons. In Tuesday’s other game, the Washington Wizards downed the New Orleans Hornets 77-70 in a lowscoring meeting of two struggling teams. Djokovic and Serena Williams named ITF World Champions Reuters

LONDON - Serbia’s Novak Djokovic has beaten Andy Murray to the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) annual men’s World Champion award with American Serena Williams taking the women’s prize for a third time. Djokovic, who ended a second successive year on top of the ATP rankings, successfully defended his Australian Open title, reached the final at the French Open and U.S. Open and claimed five other titles including the season-ending Tour Finals. Britain’s Murray was a strong contender for the honour after beating Djokovic at the U.S. Open to win his first major title after four losses in finals and claiming Olympic gold at Wimbledon, just weeks after reaching the grand slam final there in which he lost to an inspired Roger Federer. “I am proud to have been named ITF World Champion for the second successive year,” Djokovic, who dominated 2011 with three of the four grand slam titles, said in a statement on Tuesday. “It was very difficult to follow up such a successful season in 2011,

but it was extremely satisfying to win another grand slam title, reach two other major finals and finish the year at number one.” The 31-year-old Williams was unstoppable in the second half of 2012, winning Wimbledon, singles and doubles gold at the Olympics and the U.S. Open. “It means a lot to be named ITF World Champion for the third time. It has been such an amazing experience this year to win the Olympics and two Grand Slam tournaments, and I look forward to having an awesome 2013,” said the 15-times major winner. Americans Bob and Mike Bryan were named men’s doubles World Champions for the ninth time in 10 years after winning Olympic gold for the first time, while Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy, winners of the French Open and U.S. Open, became women’s doubles World Champions for the first time. Dutchwoman Esther Vergeer was named women’s wheelchair World Champion for the 13th successive year after winning a fourth Paralympic gold. France’s Stephane Houdet won the men’s award.
