Astoria Sunday Market is excited to welcome you to

Our 22nd season!

This year we are reviving the joy that comes from talented farm, food, craft, and musical entrepreneurs joining together along the river, and tucked into the historic architecture of Downtown Astoria.

Mission

For over 20 years, Astoria Sunday Market has helped to revitalize historic downtown Astoria and to improve the economic viability and vitality of farmers, artists, artisans and other small business operators in the Pacific Northwest. The Market has created a vibrant educational marketplace for the community benefit. The Astoria Sunday Market merged with the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association in 2021, and together they work to preserve and advance historic downtown Astoria’s culture and character through inspired partnerships and community engagement to support a vibrant and resilient economic future for all Astorians.

Growers & Makers Market

Astoria Sunday Market is a ‘Growers & Makers Market’ with a diversity of ever-changing products, produce, and artists who are inspired by the richness of our region. When you shop at the market, you are meeting the people who are making or growing the products. Ask them about it! They’ll be happy to share.

On the cover

Astoria Sunday Market mixed-media collage By Lindsey Aarts When I was asked to create the artwork for the 2022 season, I knew I wanted to make something bright and modern. Through mixed media collage, my hope was to depict the upbeat energy that often radiates from a busy market day. With small vignettes and bits of imagery, I tried to capture familiar scenes from the surrounding area and represent all the growers, artists, makers, and doers that make the Astoria Sunday Market so unique, and successful. It was a joy to create! More of Lindsey’s art can be found at RiverSea Gallery in downtown Astoria or online at www.papernoten.com For the latest, follow @papernotenastoria on Instagram

New Astoria Sunday Market Logo

In celebration of our 22nd season and the continuation of our thriving market after years of the pandemic, we are releasing a new Astoria Sunday Market logo! Created by Astoria Design Studio, this logo celebrates our beautiful location and flourishing market. In reference to our relationship to the river and our maritime history, you will find a circle of rope and a vibrant compass. Bright yellows and blues mimic the playful weather of our region, often with rays of sunshine greeting us in between rain clouds. In reference to the historic architecture of Downtown Astoria, the lettering of ‘Astoria Sunday Market’ nods to the historic fonts that are displayed on our beautiful buildings that meet the market streets. The burst of red creates the vibrant energy that comes with a fantastic market day–something often remembered for years and years. Thank you Astoria Design Studio for creating this beautiful design. Learn more about them at www.astoriasigns.com

Astoria Sunday Market 2022 poster and official art by

Lindsey Aarts

Lindsey Aarts was born and raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida. In 2009, she packed her belongings and headed west to Portland, Oregon. Lindsey has spent a majority of the last thirteen years working as a freelance graphic designer and began to focus on her personal art practice when she moved to Astoria in 2017. During this time, Papernoten was born. A small business specializing in recycled paper greeting cards, fine art prints, and tiny original works (all of Lindsey’s own design). Lindsey finds herself endlessly in awe of the vast Oregon landscape and the beauty of its northernmost coast. In her studio, she creates naturebased watercolor illustration as well as mixed media collages made from soft washes of paint, torn remnants, and textural layers of paper snips. As she works, Lindsey joyfully attempts to capture the character and natural beauty that gives this region its unique identity and sense of place. You can find Lindsey selling her art at the Astoria Sunday Market, teaching watercolor classes at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, offering workshops in the local schools, or spending time outdoors enjoying the Pacific Northwest.

Astoria-area indie-punk band with an acoustic set of unbearably honest sounds about life and death. www.instagram.com/__absolute__0/ The Brownsmead Flats play acoustic music that may be best described as “Crabgrass” which they liken to a folk/bluegrass style with a maritime flavor. The band has a strong focus on vocal harmonies and many of their songs are composed by members of the group. Dan Sutherland is featured on the hammered dulcimer, fiddle, and mandolin. Ray Raihala picks the banjo, guitar and mandolin. Ned Heavenrich plays harmonica and guitar. John Fenton keeps the band together rhythmically with the bass, and Larry Moore rounds out the group with his expertise on the mandolin. www.facebook.com/pages/category/Musician-band/Brownsmead-Flats-366919666698069

Castletown performs a high energy show with a sound best described as “AmeriCeltic,” blending the heart and soul of traditional Irish reels with modern folk, blues, jazz and country influences with Robert Richter on lead guitar and vocals, Patricia Rojas on violin, guitar and vocals and Malderine Birmingham on mandolin, vocals, penny whistle, guitar and piano. Willie Jaam Gilmore on bass and Casey McBride on drums form the solid rhythm section. Based in Portland the band has performed at concerts and festivals all around the West Coast opening for notable acts including Internationally known Irish fiddler Kevin Burke and Atlantic Records Recording artist Danny O’Keefe, whose songs have been covered by Jackson Browne, Elvis Presley and many others. www.facebook.com/CastletownMusic

Ray Prestegard, the multi-instrumentalist returns to the Astoria Sunday Market stage bringing his upbeat energy with banjos, harmonicas, mandolins, ukuleles and slide guitars. He plays original songs of the Pacific Northwest along with familiar tunes he navigates through all age groups. www.facebook.com/paparayman

The North Coast now has its own Magic Store! Seth Howard (owner) has over 20 years experience as a professional magician here in the Pacific Northwest. He is excited to make magic available to everyone. Looking to learn some basic card tricks? How about sleight of hand? The Magic Shop & More offers tricks for every skill level. themagicshopandmore.com

Greg Parke gives the term “one man band” a whole new meaning. Using custom built acoustic and electric MIDI guitars, sound modules and loopers, he is able to create an amazingly full sound that seems more like a whole stage full of musicians rather than just one person, all done in real time, with no pre-recorded backing tracks. Greg has also been known to throw in some keyboards, mandolin and banjo from time to time just to spice things up a bit. Combine that with his rich, captivating voice, a very spontaneous and entertaining sense of humor, and you are guaranteed a show that you won’t soon forget! https://gregparke.com

Richie Bean & the Midnight Travelers play music of Neil Young, CCR, Alman Brothers and hits from the 60’s & 70’s with a few originals thrown in. www.richiebean.com

Dogs @ The Market

Doggie Doo-do’s and Don’ts Astoria Sunday Market is a dog-gone friendly place. We are also a bustling and lively affair so not all dogs will be wagging their tails during their stay. If you have a nervous dog or one that is not well socialized, please consider leaving them at home. Here are a few Doggie Doo-do’s and Don’ts to help make your visit more enjoyable for yourself, your pup, the vendors and all the other good folks visiting the Market.

Short Leash:

Please keep your dog on a short leash and do not use retractable leashes. The Market is a crowded place and it is easy for other visitors to trip over leashes (or your dog).

No Doo-Doo Allowed:

Please be sure your dog has been thoroughly walked in an appropriate area before coming to the Market. If your dog has taken care of his business at home they are less likely to need relief at the Market. If Mother Nature does call, please PLEASE clean up after your dog. We have doggie-emergency cleaning kits at the Market Info Booth.

No “tinkling” on vendor products or tents!

(One would think this doesn’t need to be spelled out but alas…) Please curb your dog. Some of our vendors charge dog-owners a cleaning fee of $50 or more and the Market supports them in this endeavor.

Inquisitive Noses:

Dogs follow their noses, especially around food. We request that dogs and their noses be kept away from our food vendor booths. We suggest having a friend sit with the dog at one of the tables while you find your favorite snack or meal.

Not Everyone is Nuts About Mutts:

Please remember that not everyone loves dogs the way you do and some people may even be afraid of dogs – especially the large breeds. No matter how sweet and adorable you know your pooch to be, please be respectful of others. We strive to maintain a fun and pleasant environment for everyone and with your cooperation we can continue being dog-gone friendly!

Market BizKidz

AstoriaSundayMarket.com/biz-kidz

Biz Kidz is a collaborative project between ASM and Clatsop County 4-H to encourage youth to become entrepreneurs. Market Biz Kidz helps youth learn the basics of making, promoting, and selling a product. During the season they sell products of their own design together in their own market booth. Make sure to find these young entrepreneurs on most Sundays! They always have the most fabulous handmade goods to share with you.

This year the program took a trip to local brick and mortar clothing, pottery, and painting workshops. The youth did hands-on projects and saw that successful businesses can be grown with hard-work and creativity! Thank you Shift Wheeler and Cambium for helping to make this happen!

Other Things to Do!

Astoria River Walk is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy amazing views. The River Walk stretches the entire length of town from the Port on the west end to the Alderbrook neighborhood on the east end. Astoria Sunday Market is just two blocks from the river walk at the end of 12th and it is a comfortable walk to the Columbia River Maritime Museum and for the more adventurous to Pier 39 (about another mile east). The park at the Astoria Column is open with stunning views of the entire region (even without climbing the column!) astoriacolumn.org

COLUMBIA RIVER

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood… One of Astoria’s many charms is our delightful neighborhoods.

Historic Downtown is the heartbeat of Astoria stretching from 5th Street to 17th and from the waterfront to Exchange Street. Listed on the National Historic Registry, this neighborhood is the primary entertainment, dining and shopping district for the community with easy walking access to the river walk, waterfront, historic buildings, and museums. Union Town is one of the oldest neighborhoods and is also listed on the National Historic registry. Union Town is the area from the Dough Boy display to the roundabout and from Alameda to the water. The West Mooring Basin and its marina is a popular place to enjoy the beauty of the area. Alameda offers an almost pristine street of 1890 – 1910 homes. This neighborhood offers hotels, two canneries, a shipyard and three of the oldest bars on the coast! Upper Town (meaning upper Astoria) was historically the section of town separated from downtown by Scow Bay. Its borders are 40th on the east, the area where the street numbers skip from 23rd to 26th on the west, the river on the north, and Irving on the south. For reference, a scow is a flat-bottomed barge. Today Upper Town is most noted for the Firefighter’s Museum located at 29th and Marine Drive. Also in this neighborhood are some historic buildings, including a pub called Desdemona – affectionately referred to as “The Dirty D” in homage to its once roughand-tumble past that included a reputation for its trap-door where unlucky fellows would be shanghaied. East of town is home to the historic Pier 39 that offers a cannery museum, brewery and restaurant, coffee shop, overnight accommodations, a crab company and variety of other goods and services. Access to Pier 39 is over a wooden pier that juts out into the Columbia River and can be accessed by foot or car. Alderbrook is located just off Highway 30 east of town and is the collection of homes that can be seen below the highway. Established in the late 1800’s, at one time it was its own community with a mill, canneries, a school, and church – all connected to the rest of Astoria via a trolley car. Today the Astoria River Walk connects Alderbrook to downtown and beyond. Walking across the old railroad trestles provides a stunning view of the river and the community. Astoria has many other neighborhoods that locals often reference including Peter Pan, the South Slope (WWII and newer homes), Miles Crossing, and Jeffers Garden – each with their distinct personalities.
