SUMMER VACATION FUN

IN This Issue:

We took a fantastic trip to the northwest for a beautiful family wedding + vacation with friends.

Jacob’s brother got married in Spokane, Washington on June 30th. A beautiful day it was. The wedding was outside, and the weather ended up being just perfect. Three-fourths of our family was actually in the wedding!

Jacob a groomsman, Andrew the ring bearer, and Joely a flower girl. Don’t they look stunning?

Joely was especially excited to wear dangly, clip-on earrings and assured us all she looked like a princess with her bangles, earrings, and jeweled necklace. Andrew was so proud he got to handle the real rings. We had so much fun with family. Congratulations Caleb & Susana Tankersley!

Next, we headed to the home of an old friend from John Brown University, Chris Thorn, and his wife, Natalie. Their sweet family lives in Portland, OR, and we got to participate in a 4th of July Parade with them, complete with a bubble-making, supremely decorated wagon and lots of candy thrown about.

Another highlight, in addition to the 4th of July Parade, was the bigscreen movie theatre (aka large wooden structure with a white sheet) outside in the Thorn’s backyard where we watched Kung Fu Panda II from a family sized tent. We had a great time with the Thorns. (Side note: The day after we left, Chris & Natalie headed to the hospital to have baby #2!)

During our stay in Portland, our little family of four took the hour and fifteen minute trek to the coast. Because, of course, it is absolutely sacrilegious to be so close to the ocean and not make sure you get to see it.

So we did. And loved every minute.

The first half of our day on the coast was spent at Indian Beach, a sandy + rocky coastline which we saw with cloudy skies and drizzle. The kids loved the waves and even got in the water! (The adults kept on their jackets and jeans in the 55 degree weather.)

The sun came out, of course, after we made the most convincing prayer to God to please take away the rain. It was, after all, the one day we were coming to the beach in Oregon. He heard our prayers, to which Joely cried out, “Wow, God. That’s impressive!”

So, the second half of our day was then spent about a mile or two south, on sandy Cannon Beach with the sun shining down on us, in a lovely 70 degrees. Off came my jacket. Hello restorative waves of the ocean!

As the sun’s rays began to move closer to the horizon, we reluctantly shook out our beach blankets and went to get a bite to eat. Two fresh fish sandwiches (fish supplied by local fisherman who brought it in earlier that morning), one turkey sandwich, and one grilled cheese sandwich later, and we were on our way back to Portland. What a fantastic day at the beach.

On the way home to Arkansas, we stopped in Denver to see more friends from John Brown University and go to the Denver zoo. We then stayed a night in McPherson, Kansas at the Holthus Home (Heidi’s parents).

We arrived back in Springdale the following day safe and sound. What a marvelous time we had!

Homemade Lemonade Popsicles: A Refreshing Treat on a Hot Summer Day

Nothing is better than cooling off with lemonade pops after a hot day in the sun. These are super easy and super delicious. If you’re short on time, Santa Cruz brand makes a delicious organic lemonade.

We made these just yesterday after pool time.

AUG 24 - Concert in the Garden, Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, Fayetteville AUG 31 - Annual Holdiay Island Art Show at The Barn, Eureka Spings AUG 31 - Banjo Rally International, Eureka Springs SEP 1 - 5K Battlefield Run & 1-Mile Yankee Dash, Prairie Grove SEP 1- Oil Jail Museum, Fort Smith Town Square SEP 6 - 2012 NWA Business Conference & Expo, John Q. Hammons Center

- 3 large lemons - 3/4 to 1 cup sugar - 1 quart of purified water

Juice the lemons into a quart-sized pitcher or larger. If you have people picky about the pulp, you may want to use a citris juicer that strains the pulp. We love pulp around here, so it all goes in. Dump in sugar, add water, stir.

Pour lemonade into Popsicle forms. (Drink any extra lemonade you have!) Freeze 6-8 hours. Remove. Enjoy! (Note: You can also use limes for limeade pops, which are equally delicious!)

Hi everybody. My name is Joely Tankersley.

A few day ago we celebrated my birthday, It was on August 5th. I told my daddy that to celebrate my birthday, we need to do something really special and that I had a great idea.

I told him we should give everyone else a gift to celebrate my birthday! Does that sound like fun?

what does it take to be parent of an olympian?

USElESS TrIVIAl TIDBItS 1. The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley’s gum.

We’re not delusional enough to think that if we follow our advice below, we will automatically rear Joely and Andrew into Olympic champions.

6. The little plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.

But, we think it’s interesting. There seems to be similar overriding beliefs in the mindsets of all great Olympic athletes. Also interesting: many Olympic athletes directly attribute their extreme success to the support, guidance, and insight from one or both of their parents.

7. Most dust particles in your house are made from dead skin.

Could it be, perhaps, that in order to succeed at the upper echelons of competition, there are specific thought patterns that must be present in the mind of the competitor? Could it be that these specific thought patterns can be created and influenced--at least in part--by the parents? Whether done consciously or unconsciously? That perhaps these thought patterns apply to high levels of success in any field or endeavor?

Jacob and I would say, resoundingly, yes.

So, if you want to increase your child’s chances of becoming an Olympic success, or perhaps just a success in life in general, take note of the mindsets of the parents of some of the top athletes in the world. Here’s a few of the things we’ve noticed they say to their kids. Just another reason why we love the Olympics so much:

1) YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO. What a powerful phrase! If you don’t believe this about your child, it is possible you don’t believe it about yourself. Work on yourself first, live it out in your own life. Your children will see it. Also, tell them every night “You can do anything you put your mind to doing.”

2) NEVER GIVE UP.

Even when the road seems challenging, find the grit to keep on going.

3) DON’T BE DISCOURAGED BY FAILURE. LEARN FROM IT. USE IT TO GROW AND GET BETTER. Use your losses as experiences to propel you forward toward your ultimate goals in life.

4) STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR GOAL.

Don’t let distractions get in your way. Don’t let naysayers speak into your ear. Once you know what you want, stay focused on it until you get it.

5) BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. KNOW THAT YOU CAN AND WILL ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN. 80% of success in internal. Not the external factors that you have no control over. Get yourself in the right frame of mind. YOU believe you can do it first, and you’re 80% of the way there.

6) I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH AND SUPPORT YOU. I WILL DO WHATEVER I CAN TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS. There’s nothing like knowing someone else in your life is rooting for

you, no matter what. What a gift for a parent to give to their child! Offer your full support to whatever their interests are. Help them climb the mountain toward their goals, encouraging them along the way. Tell and show them that you love them.

Then, watch them soar!

We recently completed renovations for the home of Jeremy and Ivone Hudson of Springdale, in part to prepare for the arrival of a new baby boy, who actually arrived July 21st at 4:17 am! Congratulations Hudsons!

For the Hudsons, we re-decked their 700 sf deck with recycled decking, removed a twin window and replaced it with easily accessible french doors to improve the flow-thru traffic in their home. They also completed a bathroom renovation; removing old tile and counter top, replacing with new tile, new counter top and sinks, new tub surround, new mirrors, and new back splash above the sinks/counter top. We also added a doggie door in the garage.

Here’s what Jeremy and Ivone have to say about our company, “GB Group Construction did a fantastic job on our home renovations. We are satisfied customers and will definitely be using them again in the future.”

Must Read Book of the Month THE POwEr OF POSItIVE THINKING

It was written in 1952, and if it's been that long since you've read it, go back and read it again. In fact, read it again even if you read it a month ago. The rest has already happened or will never happen-neither of which matter, nor can be changed. Talk with Tank (He’s a tank full of information) Hello happy clients and friends! Most of you know me, but if not, I’m Jacob Tankersley, homebuilder, husband, father, business owner & entrepreneur, and avid hunter. My family consits of 2.4 children and a Golden Retriever, Drake.

Prepare Your Home for Later Years or Physical Disabilities If you are getting older, consider yourself senior, have a family member with disabilities, or if you just want to prepare your home for the future, here are a few of the things that you can do during your renovation or the build of your new home to make it a little more functional. Better to think about it now, rather than later wish you had.

Add blocking in the walls to allow for a solid connection for grab bars.

Make all doorways 36” wide or wider.

Create walk-in showers.

Make sure you create or have room for a future shower bench and a shower wand.

Incorporate high-seat toilets.

Make sure all faucets have one single lever verses multiple handles.

Keep kitchen appliances low enough to reach from a chair.

We have even gone so far as to stack two 6’x6’ closets over each other on separate levels to prepare for the chance that the client might need an elevator installed in the future. Just remember that even though we don’t like getting older, it happens to us all. Or, if you have a family member with disabilities, you want them to be as comfortable as possible maneuvering throughout your home for as long as they live with you.

If you are planning on growing old in the home you are in today, take the time on the front end of the renovation or new build to plan for functionality just in case situations arise where someone might be in a wheelchair or needing extra assistance.

Most items or ideas don’t cost anymore than the standard products or construction methods. It can be as simple as making sure the toilet paper holder is close enough or a little extra space is added in the bathroom so a wheelchair can maneuver comfortably.

Questions & Answers

You ask the Q, We give you the A Q: How do I get a straight line when I am painting up against trim? I am trying to keep the paint from bleeding underneath the tape, but am having trouble.

A: The trick is, an hour before you start painting, run a very small bead of painters caulk in the corner where the trim meets the tape, smooth it down with your finger, let it set up about an hour, and then paint.

Once you are completely done with however many coats of paint you are going to use -and after you make sure it is completely dry- take a razor blade and cut right down the corner to free the tape. The caulk has sealed the corner so it doesn’t allow the paint to bleed underneath the tape, and you will have a nice, clean, crisp straight line. Good luck! :) Do you have a question? Heidi’s Healthy Home Tip of The Month KEEP YOUR BREATHING DEEP This tip might not sound vital to running a healthy home, but it should be at the TOP of your list. Deep breathing has never been heavily marketed as one of the most effective things you can do for your health, but, then again, no one can make much money off of promoting it.

After all, air is air. It’s free.

But here’s the truth: Deep, full breathing is one of THE BEST things you can do for your body. Period.

Here’s why deep breathing is so important:

WOW INTERESTING FACT We recently read an incredible story of an Olympic Athlete. Have you heard this yet? A man by the name of Guor Marial escaped from his war-torn homeland of South Sudan as a young child. He hid in a cave, escaped, and came to the United States as a refugee.

He is now a 28-year-old marathon runner and has been cleared by the International Olympic Council to compete at the London Games under the Olympic Flag. He currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Here is what the Marial has to say, an escapee who was destined to a life in a Sudanese child labor camp: “The voice of South Sudan has been heard. The South Sudan has finally got a spot in the world community. Even though I will not carry their flag in this Olympic Games, the country itself is there. The dream has come true.

The hope of South Sudan is alive.”

This is why we love the Olympics so much. It is at the Olympics that you see the sheer determination and incredible heart of so many athletes.

Consciously or subconsciously every athlete that makes it to the Olympic Games seems to be saying: ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. SO SET YOUR HEART FOR WHAT YOU WANT AND GO AFTER IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT.

1) When you do not take a deep breath, the air at the bottom of your lungs can’t get flushed out. This stale air circulates back into your system, but essentially, it’s “dirty” air that hasn’t been fully oxygenated. Therefore, your body can’t detoxify and feed your body’s cells like it optimally should.

2) Deep breathing moves your lymph fluid in your body. Lymph is the fluid that surrounds your cells, brings nutrients to the cells, and carries away toxins and dead matter from the cells. You must keep your lymph fluid moving.

There are only two ways to move lymph fluid throughout the body: via physical activity (aka, exercise) and deep, diaphragmatic breath. Here’s the catch: You have to do these two things to move your lymph, because there is no autonomic system that does it for you (unlike our hearts, which automatically pumps our blood.)

3) Deep breathing calms you down, slows your heart rate, and lowers your blood pressure. Overall, deep breathing just makes you feel better, and it’s essential to the health of your body.

I read in a book that not allowing your lungs to take in a deep breath is like someone putting a full plate of food before you at the table when you’re really hungry, and then taking it away after just a few bites and saying “that’s enough, you’ll just have to make do.” You don’t want that for your breathing!

SO, HOW DO YOU TAKE A NICE, FULL DEEP BREATH? It’s simple. Breathe in as deep as you can.

Expand your lungs and ribs to the sides. Expand your lungs and ribs in the front and the back of your body. Let your belly expand. When you can’t hold in any more air, pause for a moment. Then, slowly let all the air out of your lungs. At the very end, push any remaining air out of your lungs by contracting your belly and forcing it out in order to empty the lungs fully. There! You did it! A full, deep breath!

Feels good doesn’t it?

Start with just ten deep breaths a day, and work up to it until you are doing it often throughout your day. It’s your life and your health. You can’t afford to not start breathing more deeply!

VISuAlIZAtION IS NOt JuSt FOr

OlYmPIc AtHlEtES Mental visualization has proved highly effective for Olympic Athletes. An athlete training his or her muscles and mind to “see” and “feel” the movements necessary to win without doing the actual physical movement has long been recognized as a key factor in success for extremely competitive sports.

the power of visualization, not just athletes.

Here are some simple steps to take advantage of visualization and help yourself accomplish a specific goal you have:

Here’s just one example: Marilyn King was an Olympic pentathlon athlete. About 6 months before the Moscow Olympics she was in a bad car accident and was hospitalized for months. Rather than give up her Olympic dream, she watched videos constantly of other pentathlon athletes performing at their peak and very consciously visualized herself doing the same.

2. Then, find a quiet spot to sit for a few minutes, with a tall, lengthened spine.

Although she only had a few months of actual practice time before the Olympics, she placed second. Her practice of visualization was a powerful tool of success. Marilyn has now spoken worldwide for 20 + years now on her “Olympian Thinking” formula.

So, why shouldn’t you take advantage of this powerful tool of visualization in your life to help you unlock your full potential?

You may not be an Olympic athlete, but anyone can benefit from

1. Write down your goal and know exactly what it is that you want.

3. Imagine your future, having already achieved your goal.

Imagine as if the achievement of your goal were happening right now, at that very moment in time.

4. Engage your senses by asking questions. Who am I with? What emotions am I feeling right now? What am I wearing? What is the smell in the air? What do I hear? What is my environment? Really get yourself there. In the moment.

If it’s a sports goal, take your mind through the feeling/action of your body moving through the perfect swing, the perfect shot, the proper and powerful running technique.

5. Do this visualizing often. At least daily. Start training your body and mind to move toward your goal. Eliminate any doubts you have that you can’t achieve your goal. Because you can! Now go for it!

The Homeowner’s List of

Summer Olympic To-Do’s: 1) Pick up a new sport. This may require the add-on of another room. Perhaps the finish out of a basement. At the very least it will require a new piece of exercise equipment. Come on. Nobody can stare for two solid weeks at 6-packs, 8-packs, and 12-packs found on the most athletic bodies in the world and not be inspired to try a new physical activity.

2) Get your kids or grand kids into the Games. Watch the Olympics with them and see their eyes be amazed at the physical prowess.

Remember, never crush their dreams! Most likely they want to be an Olympian some day. Who wouldn’t?! Tell them the can be if they are willing to work hard enough to do it.

3) Prepare for your own “Family Mini-Olympics.” Do you host big family events or get-togethers at your home? Hold your own mini-Olympics. Even Great-Aunt Edith can participate. Just make sure someone has the camera.

4) Host an Olympic-watching party. Call us if you need us to come and knock out some walls to make room for everybody.

5) Take time to get inspired. The tales heard at the Olympics are extraordinary. Listen. Watch. Take notes. Learn. Then--think of that one thing you have been telling yourself you needed some extra GUSTO to accomplish. Use your inspiration as motivation. No more excuses.

They can’t use em’ in the Olympics. And you can’t either. It’s time to DO IT. Whatever it is. Go for the Gold.
