I was 14 years old. I heard that I was going to the store by myself. That’s when I got hit by a car. I don’t remember nothing, but I do remember waking up in Sycamore State Hospital.
It was great when I was little, growing up. It was good, but I was bad. I went to school, but I didn’t like school because I wanted to be outside. I wanted to be outside doing bad things. It was fun to me! I loved it. I used to do all kinds of stuff…trying to gangbang, steal. I was so bad. I was heading for death. And God had to stop me before someone else stopped me for good.
When I woke up in the hospital, I had a sheet over me and was in a dark room. They put me in the basement. I tried to go to the bathroom, and I fell and realized I couldn’t walk. I pulled myself up using the bed. I looked under the sheets of the bed next to me, and there was a dead body under there! I was in the morgue. The doctors were looking for me to die.
I thought I was dead until I crawled out of the room. They saw me, grabbed me, put me in a wheelchair, and hooked me up to some tubes. They said they weren’t looking for me to make it. There was “nothing else that they could do.” They were gonna leave it up to God. When they said I would never walk again, I told them, “Let me die.” And they said I refused to die. My body wouldn’t die. God didn’t want me to die.
I didn’t know what happened to me. I didn’t know I got hit by a car. I thought the reason I couldn’t walk and was in the hospital was because someone beat me up or shot me up because I was so bad! When they told me I got hit by a car, I didn’t believe it! Because I didn’t remember. And I still don’t remember.
After I got out of the hospital, I went to therapy. I had to relearn how to walk, how to talk, how to eat, everything. Now, I can live. I can work, cook, ride a bike, make art. When I was in the hospital, they told me I would never walk. But I walked. When I first started learning how to walk, people used to say, “baby’s first steps.” Sometimes I say things, and people still don’t understand me. Some people treat me the same. Some people treat me differently. They try to take it easy on me. People that I don’t know, people that never met me before. They know I got hit by a car by the way I walk, the way I limp. To me, there ain’t nothing wrong with me. I limp when I walk because I got hit by a car.
One of my friends, we were doing the same bad stuff – gangbanging, stealing. And he got killed. Me getting hit by a car was God’s way of showing me I would’ve been dead because of the way I was, how bad I was. God stopped me before someone else stopped me for good. Don’t do bad and don’t do wrong if you want to live a good life. If I didn’t get hit by a car, I would be living a life I don’t want to live…or not living a life at all.
Getting hit by a car saved my life. I was born again.
