DEAR FRIENDS, Choice. Independence. Inclusion. These three words form the core of who we are and what we do at Envision Unlimited. We repeat these words like a mantra because they capture the zeal with which our clients pursue their endeavors, be they related to employment, advocacy, the arts, or other means of self expression. This year marked a tremendous period of growth in our programs and services, with expansion in the number of Host Families and the formation of the “Envision for Freedom” advocacy group among the highlights. Even with these successes, however, we never lose sight of the need to innovate in meaningful ways for our clients and their families. In 2016, Envision was selected by the Illinois Department of Human Services to implement an innovative new residential program designed to stabilize individuals with behavioral challenges. Our Short Term Stabilization Homes will combine intensive staff support with evidence-based treatment in a small group environment. The goal is to prevent hospitalization or placement in a state institution, and to help individuals transition back to a stable living situation in their communities. We’ll be sharing more as this promising new program progresses.

Mark McHugh Heather Nornes President and CEO Board Chair

Every day our clients prove that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities desire the same things as everyone else: choice, independence, and inclusion. Together, we’re making that possibility a reality. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

As we look ahead to ever greater accomplishments by our clients, we pause to recognize that none of this would be possible without your support. On behalf of our passionate team of staff, volunteers, and board members, we extend our gratitude for another transformative year at Envision Unlimited.

and changed others’ lives by caring about us as individuals and not as a “file.” I finally have a job in the community where I work at Mariano’s and I am advocating for myself to get more hours. Mama Yolanda works one on one with me to assist me with budgeting—she helps me function beyond what others thought was my level of capacity. “We had preconceived notions about what people with disabilities would be like and wondered when they would arrive for the first session with the students. Brandy had gotten used to having nearly every moment of her day structured at the youth home where she lived throughout her early teens. There was a comfort to the routine of it all, to the schedule. That changed when she moved in with an Envision foster family during the summer before her freshman year in high school.

development and therapeutic recreation, and hoping to work at a nonprofit one day. She was inspired to pursue this career in no small part because of the role her case manager and Envision played in her life. Eventually, through the efforts of Envision, Brandy achieved permanency with her sister, whose home she returns to on breaks from college.

Suddenly she had newfound free time in a neighborhood where she had yet to make friends. Although she knew the move was setting her on a positive path, Brandy looked forward to the fall, when she would see her friends in school. She was a good student enrolled at a performing arts high school. School plays and debate tournaments filled her free time. As long as she was doing well in her academics—and she always was—her foster parents encouraged and supported her desire to participate in extracurriculars.

Brandy speaks often about giving back to her community and to other young people whose experiences mirror her own. Her favorite thing about college? “Now I actually have a choice—do I want to do this or not? Being in foster care influenced me to want to do better and be on my own.”

Throughout high school, Brandy’s Envision foster care case manager was her rock, attending school events in support of furthering Brandy’s education. On her days off, her case manager drove Brandy around for campus tours and assisted her in college applications. Today Brandy is a sophomore at

Western illinois University, studying youth

Brandy encourages current and prospective foster parents to embrace the risk of welcoming a child or teen into their home: “Let us discover what we really want to do. Let us make our own decisions.” Her case manager always pushed Brandy to step outside her comfort zone and take risks, such as moving away to go to college and taking advantage of all her campus experience has to offer. “I don’t want to be another statistic,” Brandy says. She’s already defied the odds. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

SPEAKING UP, SPEAKING OUT Driven by a need to make their voices heard on issues important to the IDD community, nine clients helped to form the “Envision for Freedom” chapter of the Illinois Alliance of Self Advocates, an initiative supported by the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Envision Unlimited’s financial position improved significantly in fiscal year 2016, posting an increase in Net Assets of $849,775. Growth in Community Living Services, launching new programs such as Host Family living arrangements, and expense control across all programs drove the favorable results. With a renewed focus and success of the Bright Futures Ball, contributions and fund raising events provided new revenue and led to improved client outcomes.

Envision’s Net Assets as of June 30, 2016, were $6,481,101. Our balance sheet with no long-term debt grew in strength this past year and continues to provide us the flexibility needed to implement programs and services that fulfill our overall mission, despite the funding challenges presented by the State of Illinois. We begin fiscal year 2017 with the start-up and operation of the new Short-term Stabilization Homes program, continued expansion of the Host Family program, and the transformation of our day programming to a completely community-based model. Innovative initiatives like these help ensure the long-term financial health of the organization. Sincerely, Dan Durbin Treasurer

THE COLEMAN FOUNDATION

The Envision Unlimited Host Family Program is centered around the belief that our clients are functioning and contributing members of their communities. They have much to offer interpersonally and in service to others. The Coleman Foundation shares these beliefs and awarded Envision Unlimited a $262,750 grant to formalize and expand our Host Family program throughout 2016. Grant resources enabled Envision to increase our recruitment efforts for prospective host families and bear incremental program costs as we reach our goal of serving 30 individuals in the program’s initial phase.

“The Host Family model delivers a soughtafter residential environment in a financially sustainable manner, something critically important in this time of great need and strained resources,” said Clark McCain, Senior Program Officer at the Coleman Foundation. “We congratulate Envision Unlimited for scaling this effort to serve its clients in a new and effective way.” We are grateful for the support of The Coleman Foundation as we continue to grow this innovative program that provides adults with IDD the setting they need to attain selfsufficiency and increase self-determination.
