Enumclaw continues to grow, but stays connected to its roots and history

Thundering Mountain

In 1879, Frank and Mary Stevenson homesteaded what is now the center of town. Early settlers called this area Stevensonville, but the early natives knew it as Enumclaw, a word with different translations, but most reference it meaning a loud, thundering noise. Enumclaw is the name that stuck. Enumclaw was platted in 1885, when the railroad decided to run through the center of town, and was incorporated on January 27, 1913.

Enumclaw rests in a pastoral setting between plateau farmlands and the Cascade Mountains in the shadow of one of Washington state’s most beloved treasures – Mount Rainier. The area was formed by a volcanic mudflow from Mount Rainier. Enumclaw considers itself the base camp for The Mountain and is known as the “gateway” to the north entrance of Mount Rainier National Park, which can be accessed through the Chinook Scenic Byway on State Route 410. Enumclaw’s beautiful homes with their well-kept yards contribute to the community being one of the most attractive in King County. The surrounding plateau, with a population of more than 40,000, is a large Thoroughbred horse breeding and boarding area.

• Gateway to Mount Rainier National Park • Closest city to Washington state’s largest ski area, Crystal Mountain Resort • Summer and fall access to Washington’s wine country (Yakima) via Chinook Pass • Good Health – St. Elizabeth Hospital was included on the 2011 list of the 25 “Most Wired” small and rural hospitals in the nation for its use of information technology to support quality patient care and achieve operational efficiencies Enumclaw Chamber Visitor Guide & Directory | Page 5

Downtown Enumclaw boasts dozens of independentlyowned eateries and specialty food shops. Many of them offer outside dining and locally-sourced ingredients. Food trucks, wineries and breweries are rounding out the culinary experience. In addition, the town hosts two wine walks, a beer festival and a wine and chocolate festival. In July, the city closes down Cole Street for a weekend and merchants and vendors spill into the roadway with merchandise and great deals. In recent years, organizers have added entertainment, kid-friendly activities and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Enumclaw loves a parade! At least three a year roll down Cole Street – the Stars and Stripes Fourth of July Parade, the Enumclaw High School Homecoming Parade and the Christmas Parade. Mud Mountain

The park offers a spectacular view of Mud Mountain Dam

Built in the 1940s by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mud Mountain Dam rests on the White River. A rock and earth filled dam, it was designed to control floods in the White and Puyallup river valleys and continues to serve that purpose today. It also serves as a popular destination for families looking to escape the everyday routine. The day-use area offers open grass, multiple playgrounds, covered picnic and barbecue areas and a wading pool with fountain. In addition to the view of the dam, the trails offer a spectacular view of the river valley – hike, bike or ride horses. The park is open all year but the hours change with the seasons. Summer hours are typically 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. In September, closing time changes to 4 p.m. During the winter, October through April, the park closes at 4 p.m. and is closed on the weekends. 30525 SE Mud Mountain Road 360-825-3211 www.nws.usace.army.mil/Locations/Seattle-District-Sites

Hiking

Mount Peak

Hiking to the 1,800-foot summit of Mount Peak is a daily ritual for many Plateau residents and a special treat for guests. Both trails – the steep, narrow climb up the front side, or the wider incline up the back, provide a dose of healthy exercise and spectacular vistas. Once the home to a fire lookout, Mount Peak is one of the most popular hikes in Enumclaw and south King County. The trail honors mountaineer Cal Magnusson, who was a regular climber and advocate for the area. The one-mile long forested trail climbs 1,000 vertical feet and is dotted with outcroppings of columnar basalt. A recent acquisition of acreage on the south side created space for a parking area and may open up the area for other recreation experiences. Foothills Trail The Foothills Trail runs along a former railroad route from the White River, through the city and north of town. The most popular section covers a stretch through Enumclaw. The non-motorized asphalt trail/linear park, suitable for bicycles, walking, in-line skates and wheelchairs, is well used by residents, especially the path along State Route 410 from Warner Avenue into town. The plan is to eventually connect to trail systems in Pierce and King county. Other Options Stroll around Deep Lake, aka Nolte State Park, walk along the Green River at Flaming Geyser or Kanaskat-Palmer state parks, trek through Federation Forest or the rim at Mud Mountain Dam, or take a trip along any number of hikes suggested by the Forest Service and Mount Rainier National Park.

ďƒ‘Geocaching There are more than 300 treasures

hidden around the Plateau. Stop by the Chamber for more information.

Might We Suggest: Tipsoo Lake (0.5 mi/0.8 km) Easy walk around this picturesque subalpine lake surrounded by gorgeous wildflower meadows. Please stay on trails to protect the delicate meadows. Crystal Lakes Trail (6.3 mi/10.1 km) Located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of Cayuse Pass. Spectacular meadows highlight this trail in midsummer. Watch for elk and mountain goats, Upper Crystal Lake lies in a basin 0.7 miles (1.1 km) beyond the lower lake. Naches Peak Loop Trail (3.4 mi/5.5 km) Starting from Tipsoo Lake, travel clockwise along trail, cross Highway 410 on the Pacific Crest Trail bridge going south on the Pacific Crest Trail to keep the mountain in view. This trail features superb wildflower displays in midsummer and brilliant foliage in the fall. Pick up maps/directions at the Forest Service office on State Route 410

On the Farm

The buzz word is agrotourism, but here on the Plateau it’s who we are and what we do. It’s our history and heritage. Dairy is the second–largest agricultural commodity produced in Washington. Washington ranks 10th in total milk production and fourth in milk production per cow among the 50 United States. Enumclaw is home to a large number of working dairy farms. Enumclaw is also home to a number of smaller working farms. Cruise around and you’ll find goats, hogs, chickens, sheep, alpacas – there’s even a worm farm here. Summer is berry season, especially blueberries. In the fall, bring the kids to the pumpkin patch or roam through a corn maze. And, in December, pick up a Christmas tree at any

The Plateau is horse country. Not only does the Plateau produce top race and show horses, but the people here provide support for the equine industry – transportation, feed, farriers, veterinary services, tack, and more. Many jockeys, owners, breeders and trainers call Enumclaw home. The area is also filled with world-class equestrian training and event facilities, plus stables offering boarding and riding lessons. Competition is diverse from dressage to rodeo. The Seattle Polo and Equestrian Club now calls Enumclaw home with an equestrian training center that includes polo clinics, events and other amenities. The Enumclaw Pro Rodeo takes place at the Expo Center in August. This event brings Pro Rodeo riders from across the country and is associated with the Northwest Pro Rodeo Association. That’s all on the Plateau. There are plenty of places to ride in the foothills. Trailer up those ponies and venture out. No horse, no worries. In summer, Crystal Mountain Outfitters offers rides ranging from one hour to all day through the Cascade range – www.crystalmountainoutfitters.com

Cycling

The Stage Race is the longest running in the region

The flat, open spaces and rolling hills of the Veazie valley and the Osceola and Wabash farm lands make the Plateau a great place for cycling, while mountain bike riders can hit another gear by heading to forest land to the east of the city. Enumclaw hosts two big bike events each year – the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race in May and the Redmond Cycling Club’s RAMROD in July. The Stage Race brings hundreds of road racers for time trials and competition through the streets of Enumclaw and in the areas nearby. The challenging RAMROD, Ride Around Mountain Rainier in One Day, starts and ends in Enumclaw the final Thursday in July. The trek includes a strenuous climb in elevation with the final leg a downhill scream along State Route 410 and Mud Mountain Dam Road. Need more? In September, bicyclists team up with runners and swimmers for the Black Diamond triathlon at Nolte State Park.

Give’em Room Shoulder space on many of the area’s country roads is at a premium, please pass with caution and respect.

Might We Suggest The intermediate Mud Mountain Rim Trail ride, 7.6 miles, with elevation gain of 240 feet. It’s a ride on a single track and dirt road, several short climbs, rideable all year, near Mud Mountain Dam park.

Motorcycle Haven

The flat, open spaces around Enumclaw and the mountain highway are paradise for motorcycle riders. Feel the rush of cool mountain air across your cheeks and take a peek at the gorgeous horizon across the handle bars. Whether you’re cruising on a Harley or revving the dirt bike on an approved trail this is heaven.

Art in the Garden

Art in the Garden has become a perennial Plateau favorite. Matson Farms, which supplies flowers for Country Garden Bouquets, teams with Arts Alive! for a public display of art and garden with Mount Rainier providing the back drop.

Wine Walk

The Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors two wine walks a year in the spring and fall. Downtown businesses open their doors to local wineries and bring in experts to offer tastes of vintages from across the state and country. Music, food and vendors round out the evening. www.enumclawchamber.com

Beer Festivals

Beer lovers, the Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce heard your cries and will host its first Brew Walk in September. The event will feature local craft breweries. Need more to quench your thirst, the Enumclaw Expo Center hosts Brew(Boo)Fest with 24 brews on tap, games and live music. www.enumclawchamber.com

Downtown Trick or Treat

Ghosts, goblins and hundreds of Spidermen, Minions and princesses come out on Cole Street Halloween night for the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce’s Trick or Treat event. Business owners keep their doors open past clos-

ing and hand out goodies. www.enumclawchamber.com

Christmas Parade The granddaddy of all parades, even by Enumclaw’s standards. It’s hard to tell if there are more people in the parade or more watching. Generations of families start the holiday season the first Saturday in December with the Christmas Parade. An evening parade, it draws more than 100 entries – lighted floats, marching bands, horses, dancers, Scout troops, classic cars, alpacas, heavy equipment, the Grinch, Santa. The number of participants is impressive, but the number of spectators is more amazing. Hundreds and hundreds of warmly dressed spectators with cocoa or coffee in hand line Cole Street. Rain, wind, even the occasional snow, do not deter the holiday spirit. www.enumclawchamber.com

Festival of Crafts The Enumclaw Festival of Crafts and Gifts takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Expo Center. This event features a variety of handcrafts and gifts. It is a great way to kick-off holiday shopping, plus enjoy entertainment, take photos with Santa and let the kids make a holiday craft. www.enumclawfestivalofcrafts.com
