Noel Gourdin Interview by Mark Bucannah

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 13

Soul and R&B singer Noel Gourdin (Gor-Deen) was born in Brockton, MA but spent most of his summers with his in family Pachuta, Mississippi. At the age of 24, Gourdin scored a deal with Sony and soon after had his first album released in stores. While growing up singing in church, Gourdin developed his vocal skills. His father also introduced him to classic soul music at a young age to such artist like Otis Redding. Gourdin’s brother introduced him to the sounds of “The New Jack Swing. Gourdin is still influenced by classic soul as well as the contemporary sounds of R&B and hip-hop which he states helps him put his own style together. Noel signed a management deal with Stalin Entertainment in 2002 and a production deal with Trakaddix, and shortly thereafter was linked to producer Kay Gee. Gourdin contributed the song ‘Family Reunion’ to the soundtrack of “The Cookout”, a 2004 comedy directed by Lance Rivera. In 2005 Gourdin met with Sony Urban in 2005 which led to a summer showcase and in 2008 Noel released his debut offering, “After My Time”. “After My Time” is an album filled with songs that brought together listeners across all generations and genres. In 2010 Noel joined forces with Mass Appeal Entertainment to complete his sophomore album. 2012 has been an incredibly year for Noel Gourdin, coming off of a successfully run of sold outs shows in the UK. He is currently working on his third project set to come out in early 2013 with his hit single “FOXXXY”. “ FOXXXY” continues to get heavy rotation on UK radio stations and is currently on the top 10 at the UK’s urban radio soul charts. Earlier in 2012 Gourdin was featured in the single by Brian Culbertson “You’re My Music.

~~ The Interview ~~ MB: What was is like for you as a southern styled artist originally from Brockton, Massachusetts? The North could be hard on southern artist and I want to get a sense of how the industry is receiving you and the style of music that you put out. NG: I’d like to think that it’s not really about where I’m from that makes the industry either receive me better or worse, but the quality of music that I continuously put out. I think with the type of music that I do, which is Soul/R&B, has enough passionate supporters that they understand and get behind the type of music that I’m doing. MB: On the flip side tell us who is Noel Gourdin and what are you about in music and in your personal life? NG: Who is Noel Gourdin? Well, in music, I’m about making music that is timeless and that’s relatable. Conceptually my lyrics can speak to people of all ages. I consciously make music that’s respectful, and something that I believe sets me apart from other artist in my genre. I always have an undertone of spirituality in my music. I’m also not afraid of being vulnerable and showing that a man can express feelings. Personally, Noel Gourdin is all about family, and appreciating every day that I’m given and every blessing I receive from God.

14 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

MB: Is there something about you that most people would find hard to believe? NG: Is there something about me that people would find hard to believe...hmmm...let’s see...I’m a mama’s boy, I love video games and I snore...ha ha ha, don’t tell anybody though! MB: Where would you say your passion lies, in gospel music, or R&B Soul? The reason I asked is because I see for a lot of artists who grew up in the church, ending up having to make a choice between the two somewhere in their career due to the industries expectations of their clients.

NG: I’d definitely say that my passion lies more so with R&B /Soul, because that was the music I was raised on. As a young boy, I was always with my Pop, and that was the only style of music that he played, and I’ve been in love with soul music ever since. MB: How did you get hooked up with Top Notch Music Entertainment and how is this experience for you? NG: Marvyn Mack was actually involved with my project since the very beginning. He was working in conjunction with Charlie Walk, who at the time was heading up Epic Records. Charlie asked Marv which record out of a bunch he wanted to market and push to radio and Marv chose “The River”. The rest is history. Marv and his teams of Top Notch representatives guided us up the charts to #1 on Billboard. In 2010, I asked Marv to become my manager, and he accepted. To this day I believe it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my young career. MB: What kind of response or feedback have you been getting about your single “Foxxxy” and is there going to be an official video made for it? NG: The response that I’ve been getting from Foxxxy” has been incredible! It’s a feel good type of record that I actually based on one of my favorite Prince songs, Raspberry Beret. I believe the response has been positive because it’s a simple, relatable and fun song about a man and a woman enjoying each other’s company while taking a ride. What could be better than that? As far as a video, you never know, ha ha.

MB: Your last album “Fresh: The definition” had some very soulful tracks expressing a lot of love. What kind of tracks can we look forward to on the next album? NG: My “City Heart, Southern Soul” album will also be about love, but with different concepts and stories inspired by real life instances and occurrences. MB: It looks like you are being well received in the UK and you have a following in some areas in the United States. What does your team have next for you to increase your popularity in other areas of the United States and in other areas across the globe and will you be touring? NG: Yes, we have been getting a lot of positive response from the UK and that’s a testament to just how passionate and supportive they are about soul music. The UK today reminds me of the United States in the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s by the way they respect and support the artist. My team is always looking to widen our audience by social media, charity work, collaborations with other artists, and of course staying on the road. There’s no better place for an artist, that’s looking to gain supporters, than on the road.

Ywada involves herself in charity work making appearances at charity events and has also released a track “Pink and White” for her charity “The Breast Health Initiative”. She also spent an afternoon with girls of the “Embrace Girls Foundation” at the Kelsey Pharr Elementary School in Miami, Florida and read an excerpt from the “Rise of the Guardians” book and discussed the importance of education and how to embrace their girl power! Her third single and release entitled “Why?” was released at the end of 2012 and sets the stage for her official album release which will be sometime in early 2013. The album will be entitled “Me Against Love.” We look forward to hearing more from such a gifted artist and we commend her for her work with various charity organizations.

Ywada had her debut in 2012 and also blessed the inside of the May 2012 issue of Entrigue Magazine. Ywada soon became a fan favorite to many listeners of R&B soul music across the world when she dropped her first single entitled “Count Me Out” which received a lot of air play on Internet and College radio networks as well as on Music Choice. “Count Me Out” was featured for several weeks on iTunes R&B/Soul home page under the “Hot Singles” and “Artist to Watch” categories. Ywada joined fellow R&B artist such as Erykah Badu, Fantasia, El Debarge, Charlie Wilson, and others for Funk Fest. Ywada had her live performance in Tampa/St. Pete, Florida in the summer of 2012. Ywada’s success continued with shows alongside Fantasia Joe, Ruben Studdard, and Anthony David. Ywada’s second single entitled “Thought I Was Loved” and her debut of her first music video for “Thought I Was Loved” came shortly after and continues to be under iTunes “Hot Tracks” category, and is currently iTunes “Editors’ Choice Pick”.

Miss Joelle Ashley is a hip hop, pop and R&B singer originally from Miami, Florida but has traveled to New York to further her career. It appears to be the right move because of the new track and video from Joelle entitled “Red Lipstick”. Model Tyson Bedford has an appearance in her “Red Lipstick” video. The media and fans are buzzing about the track and video and how Miss Joelle Ashley wants women to “Embrace your sexuality, be free and feel sexy”. Joelle’s appearance and music content puts you in mind of early Gwen Stefani and early Madonna and that certainly is not a bad start. Hopefully Miss Joelle Ashley can continue the momentum and put out new tracks and videos just as popular for 2013. %NTRIGUE -AGAZINE \ *ANUARY

Krissy Krissy Interview by Elias Xavier

%NTRIGUE -AGAZINE \ *ANUARY

Krislyn Rivera, famously known as Krissy Krissy, is the youngest girl out of a family of six. She is a pop singer based out of Bushwick, New York who started singing in church when she was a child. Krissy Krissy was born in California but raised in New York. Fans all over are talking about the 23 year old and her soulful voice. Krissy Krissy signed with Bigger Than Building management in 2011 and released her EP “Above All” on September 25th 2012. Bigger Than Building also manages Joel Ortiz. She was also chosen as “Freshman Pick” on MTVu. MTV says Krissy Krissy was in a tight heated battle for the title of “The Freshman” but Krissy Krissy’s fan base pulled off the win with just over 22 votes. Krissy Krissy’s music can be heard on MTV, Logo, IHeartRadio, YouTube and her music is available for download on iTunes. EX: How young were you as a little girl when you use to sing in church and what was your favorite gospel song to sing back then? KK: I started at a very young age. My first solo in church was when I was 13. I sang “Jesus is” by Fred Hammond. EX: You have that soulful flavor and you have a slight raspy tone to your voice and it is definitely heard on your track “Suspicious”. How did you come about creating that specific track, was it created from something from your past experience? KK: Awww. Thank you for that. “Suspicious” is based on a true story. Unfortunately, I did go through a trying time with a partner of mine. I was cheated on. All the signs were there and I dismissed them obviously because I was in denial. Who wants to feel that!! Being cheated on messed with my head! So I did what not many would do! I made it into a something that makes me feel better about what happened! A song! Definitely wanted to sing the way I felt at that moment.

26 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

Although it was a crappy time, it actually helps many who can relate to push past it! EX: Which musical instruments do you play? KK: I can play any instrument you give me!! The question is if I play them well. Lol. I play the guitar primarily. Then, I translate the song over to the piano and figure it out. EX: Do you create most of your music and lyrics or do you have a team? KK: I believe in my team. I don’t put anything out unless my team agrees. It’s easy to jump off track but having a team like mine makes sure we are all on the same page. I get a concept or I’m passed a beat and we collectively come together to make a great record come out of our camp! EX: Out of all the songs you have recorded or may have penned for others, which song is your favorite and why?

KK: My favorite song is a “Above All”. That song is dedicated to my dad. He really had and still has a big impact on my life. He really showed me that the love of a father is what will help his little girl push pass all the hurt and pain that I went through and will go through. His love is Above All. He was able to hear the song before he passed away so I know that he knew how much I loved him. EX: Which artist, past or present, influences your music style and is there one artist on your short list that you really would love to work with on a single or an album? KK: I’m a really big fan of Melissa Etheridge and Celine Dion. I believe they paved the way for singer song writer and pop artist to push past the stereotypes and be who they are! I would love to have a song with someone as epic as they are. I would love to have a record with Jay Z too ! Just throwing that out there too. EX: Where are you performing now? KK: I have a couple of performances lined up that I’m really excited about. Jan 19 I’m in Philly doing a Sandy Relief Benefit. On January 25th I’m at the Blue Note in NYC doing there late night series. Doors open at 1130pm. EX: Do people recognize you on the street when you’re walking around Brooklyn and Manhattan and do they approach you? KK: It’s pretty dope when they recognize me. It’s happens a lot around my Brooklyn neighborhood. The buzz is growing and although I may not notice half the awkward stares, I do get some people who approach me. It’s an awesome feeling. I love my buddies! EX: Are you signed with any labels?

to be released? KK: I’m constantly working. Dennis (my manger) always has me in the studio, working on some new tracks and new ideas. It’s my passion and way of living. We will be releasing some new videos and new songs soon! Super stoked about that. DB: How does this musical experience feel to you? Is it a lot more work than you thought and are you having fun as you climb this ladder to success especially when you hear your music being played? KK: It is a lot of work. I have never worked this hard on something. It’s a state of mind that carries out to what I do physically. It does effect me emotionally. I have to stay focused and determined. The fun will come later. I just want to be epic. Be Big! Be an influence! I want to bring a Grammy home to Bushwick! I’m enjoying this experience. It’s a lot of pressure but I wouldn’t change it for the world! DB: What do you do on your downtime when you break from musical creativity? KK: I hang out with my family and my best fiends. Keeps me grounded. Lets me be myself and act a fool! I also love to bother or prank my mom. Lol Her reactions are so funny! DB: In closing, what would you like to say to Entrigue Magazine readers and to your fans? KK: Thank you Entrigue Magazine for having me. I’m honored. It really means the world to me. I love to share and give the world a little piece of me every time. I consider my “fans” to be my buddies. I’m really close to them all. They mean tons to me and if they take the time to appreciate me and help me move up on this ladder then I can do the same for them and whatever ladder they choose!

KK: I am signed to my managers company “Bigger Than Buildings”. Strictly Indy! We are just working, and if the doors open and my team agrees, than we can proceed with that. EX: What musical projects are you currently working on and when can we expect the new single or album

Chef Shawn Renee

Get Cake Interview with Mark Bucannah

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 29

MB: Growing up did you see yourself becoming a chef or was it a farfetched idea that never even crossed your mind? SR: No it wasn’t a farfetched idea because cooking was something I always liked to do and it is something that runs in my family. Growing up we had our own restaurants. I use to bake for my grandmother all the time. MB: When did you first get the idea to mix alcohol in cake batter & did you like how your first batch came out? SR: Years ago, back in 2005, when I was living in Brooklyn NY rum cake was a big seller then. I figured I would put a twist on it and I created a Henny cake and I also created a Remy Red Velvet cake an ooh boy, it was so good. The feedback I received was even better than I expected and so that is when I knew I had something very special here. I then decided to launch my company “GET CAKE”. MB: This may sound funny but I have to ask this question. Can a person get tipsy if they indulge themselves in your treats? SR: {Laughter} Yes silly, each slice is shy of two shots and each cupcake is shy of a shot. MB: Have you thought of partnering with any major Liquor companies? SR: Well yes. I have already done partnership with other companies and I still do from time to time when they hold brand or product events and I’m hired to cater that event. I then use that product that is being promoted to sweeten up the night. {laughter} MB: Did you find it hard to brand “GET CAKE” and who was your first celebrity client? SR: Wow that is a good one. First, no I didn’t find it hard to brand “Get Cake”

30 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

because I built a strong team from the start. My first client, I believe was Vivica A. Fox and I would have to say my most memorable client was Dr. Martin Luther King’s only granddaughter during her party celebrating her second birthday. It was truly an Honor. MB: What would you say is your best seller? SR: I would say my Hennessy cake and the Coconut Ciroc cake has sold really well. I also make an LQ cheese cake that is becoming very popular as well. MB: Besides pastries, what else does Chef Shawn Renee like to whip up in the kitchen? SR: I love making different types of soups and fish dishes Mr. Bucannah. MB: Do you plan on opening any stores in the near future? SR: Yes, in fact I’m actually working on finding a warehouse in New Jersey to act as a supplier to local and nationwide vendors for bulk distributions. I am also working on a “GET CAKE UGANDA”, where our products will be sold in Uganda stores and at some night life venues. I am very excited about this expansion. MB: Tell us at Entrigue Magazine something about Shawn Renee that has never been shared with any other public or private media? Now we already know you’re a Steelers fan. SR: {Laughter} That’s right! I see you have done your research. I am a general contractor and my family owns an HVAC company and we are involved in booking appointments, some biding, bookkeeping and other things. Yes the girl doesn’t mind getting her hands in more than just batter. MB: {laughter} I heard that chef! What’s the going rate for a Chef Shawn Renee Creation?

“I stand behind my product just as any other major brand or company that’s in high demand as “GET CAKE” will be around for a long time”

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 31

SR: Well Mr. Bucannah, prices vary because most of what I create are custom cakes but to give the readers an idea, a cupcake runs about four dollars and up each, a cake ranges from seventy five dollars and up. MB: Tell me your thoughts on this new trend or fad of companies making Liquor to taste like cake or something sweet and do you see this hurting your sales as this trend grows? SR: I love it. In fact I’m making cupcakes for a client next week and I’m using Novo Red Velvet. So not at all I stand behind my product just as any other major brand or company that’s in high demand as “GET CAKE” will be around for a long time Mr. Bucannah. Not to mention I also make organic and vegan pastries as well. MB: Being a well-rounded woman, daughter, chef, and contractor, what advice would you give a young woman out there finding it hard to get there feet under them? SR: I would say don’t let anything distract you. Not anything! Keep pushing yourself and don’t give up. I only came up with a plan (A) because creating a plan (B) would have been going for second best and that would have been too close to failure. So I made my only option plan (A) and I made sure that it would work for me. MB: Well Chef that’s our time. We really wish you all the best in all your ventures to come, and keep in touch with us here at Entrigue Magazine as your empire expands. Do you have anything you would like to say before we end Chef? SR: Yes, Thank you Entrigue Magazine, thank you Mr. Bucannah and I’m going to leave you guys with one of my cake recipes. Also “GO GET CAKE”!!!!!!!

Kiyana

No Love

Interview by Helena Tong

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 35

HT: For those that don’t know you, tell us about yourself. Tell us three things that the world may not know about you? K: Well, I’ve seen several different bio’s written on me with horribly wrong information. (laughing) So I’ll start off by giving the basics. I’m 23 and I was born in St. Louis, Missouri but I grew up in Atlanta Georgia. My birthday is September 1st which makes me a VIRGO! (Smile) HT: The name Kiyana is derivative of the name Kiana which is English and Hawaiian. Was there a meaning behind why you were given the name Kiyana? K: My mom was young when she had me. She was sixteen so under the circumstance she wanted me to have a name with meaning, so she gave me the name Kiyana. It means grace, which is defined as God’s undeserved favor. Given the storms I’ve overcome in my life and how God continues to wrap his arms around me in the mist of my wrong doings, the name itself fits. HT: How old were you when you first started singing, take us through your background of how you started and what inspired you to become a singer? K: When I first started singing I was probably about three years old. One of the first songs I would sing was by the guy group Rude Boy entitled “It’s Written All Over Your Face”. My mother was very young when she had me as I stated before so I didn’t really grow up on the Etta James, Betty Wright or Aretha Franklin era. Yet as I got older and more serious about music, I did my homework. (Smile) I used to turn the rap songs I would hear as a child like “Ice Ice Baby” into my own little R&B tune. God gave me the gift of music and song at a very young age. My father died when I was 2 so I kind of grew up feeling a part of me was missing. I didn’t realize yet that God gave me a gift in which I would be able to find my peace. I had my first solo in a church choir when I was about seven or eight years old. I can remember the congregation standing up when I was done and I can remember my mother crying.

36 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

My voice was anointing. It’s all really a blur but at that moment I understood the power of music so I continued to sing in church. Before I was in my teens they had me singing on the adult praise team. (laughing) I also sung in the school chorus, all state choir, musicals and many more venues. I remember watching the movie “Sister Act 2” and hearing Lauryn Hills voice. It was somewhat like mine with the rasp, the edge and rawness and it gave me something to identify with, and at that very moment I told myself I’m going to be a singer. I did not discuss this anyone because I didn’t want anyone to interfere with what God was preparing me for in my life. I would get kicked out of class because I would sing while we took tests or I would sing during independent work time. It was all I cared about and all I ever wanted to do. Those around me only knew Kiyana was going to college to be a child psychologist. The summer before my sophomore year at Savannah State, I started to cried a lot. I was depressed because I wasn’t fulfilling my purpose or my calling. The gift God gave me I wasn’t able to use there. Then there was a play that the theatre department was putting on and I auditioned for it and I got the part. One night of performing after months of rehearsal, a girl who shared a scene with me had a wardrobe malfunction which resulted in her coming out on stage late. Between the time of her dealing with that and me just sitting on stage waiting for her, I started to sing “I Love You Lord and I Lift My Voice”. I played a grandmother and the song actually fit the scene. The audience was surprised because this was NOT a musical and no one knew I could sing. The director of the play made me sing from that night on! It was hilarious I secretly planned singing all along. I just didn’t know how I was going to fit it in. My friend Jesus made a way. (Smile) From then on I made my decision my voice packed power, conviction and I had something. I cheered my last football and basketball season and came home to Atlanta and auditioned for a girl group. Since then it has been MUSIC, MUSIC and more MUSIC. I’m happy now and I’m at peace. I’m beginning to live my dream and all I had to do was step out on faith and I had to be willing to put in the work to fulfill my calling. HT: Wow! Very interesting history there. How much of your music do you write yourself?

K: On my first compilation of music “Confessions of a Virgo” and my first single “Take Me Away” I was in about 75%. I started off in the music industry as a songwriter and before I started recording my own solo records I was recording for other people. That was my foot in the door after the girl groups didn’t work out. I knew that every producer would need songwriters. I’m starting to get more comfortable working with other artists and it’s actually way more fun working with other talented people but I still give my input on vocal production and on lyrics and concepts. I am a huge part of every aspect of my career. HT: What comes into your mind when you are writing music? Does it come from your experiences? K: I’m a mood writer, if that makes any sense. I go into the studio with pieces of songs that come to my head, normally from something I felt that day or something I’ve experienced that day. Off of my new project “Confessions of a Virgo 2” I wrote this record called “Bonnie & Clyde”. I went into the studio so sad that day. I wanted to love and to be loved right. I was in a relationship with this guy yet I still felt alone. It was the weirdest feeling. I was tired of being in and out of relationships with no substance and that didn’t mean anything. So that day I envisioned myself in love with a man that loved me. It’s a feeling that we live for. We were put here to love and to be loved. It such a beautiful song but YES, I do write from experience. That’s the only way I can connect. HT: R&B songstress K. Mychele does the same thing also. I read that one of your biggest inspirations is Mary J. Blige because she transcends through generations and has been around for over 20 years. I have to admit that is a great person to be inspired by. Do you see any aspects of her in the things you try to do in life or music? K: I never try to mimic or do as others have done. I’m an individual and I was always taught when the world goes left, Kiyana, you go right. I do know that every great legend has something that separates them from the rest, be it their tone, their story or the content of their material.

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 37

I connect with Mary J Blige because of the soul in her voice, the content and rawness of her material, the realness of her persona and that in the mist of her trials she survived. I am inspired by Beyonce and Michael Jackson who are both Virgos as well with impeccable work ethics and unexplainable passion. I’ve studied them along with Mary J Blige. I desire the longevity that Mary J Blige has given this music industry. I desire to obtain the work ethics and the performance ability that Beyonce and Michael Jackson have given us. HT: Your tracks “Turn Up” and “Take Me Away” have been getting a lot of play since being released in 2011. Would you say you have something different that makes your music stand out from the rest of the R&B artists? K: I’m blessed that my first single “Take Me Away” was the #1 indie R&B record of 2011. What makes my music stand out? This is my calling. I try to make records that have substance and my records will always inspire, motivate or uplift. I think it’s my tone too. I have a rare and unique tone, easy on the ears. (Smile) This is my purpose. I was called to lead my generation. I don’t sing about being pretty, having the best clothes or material things. I sing about real life issues and I know that others can and will relate to my music. This is just the beginning. HT: Would you classify yourself more as an R&B or hip hop artist? Back in the days industries didn’t know whether to call Mary J. Blige, queen of hip hop or queen of R&B. She was that good and still is.

I want to tour before I sign my first major deal. All of my shows have been here in the United States. I guess that’s a part of being an indie artist. (Smile) I’ve performed in L.A., N.Y., VA., N. Carolina, S. Carolina, TN, Ohio and up and down the chitlin circuit. I’m so ready. I feel like I’m prepared now. I know I’ve gotten radio play in the UK and I have fans in Saudi Arabia and Japan but as of now I have no international show dates. I’m sure the universe has a few things prepared for us. HT: Tell us a little about your indie artist status? K: I’m an indie artist signed to Artists 1st Entertainment. Our CEO, Parrish Johnson has been in the industry for over 20 years and has worked with Beyonce, Aalyah, Tupac, Tank, 2 Chainz and many others. His great experience in developing artists, marketing and radio has taught me so much. I feel like every artist should experience this grind. It builds hunger, focus and understanding of what really goes on in this industry. It allows you to be a bit more independent and have a bit more control then you normally would have with a major label. Of course this year we plan on signing with a major label, but were focusing on building my brand and my foundation. HT: What music projects are you currently working on and can we expect an album for 2013 and who will be working with you on your new album?

K: I blend the two. I call myself a hip hop/R&B artist. I do them both if it’s fair. Most of my production is hip hop influenced, because that’s really what I grew up on with the heavy bass and cool drums but my soulful vocals are rhythm and blues from church. It’s fair to say that Mary J Blige is definitely good at both and it was unique at the time. She was bold and she made her mark in the industry by doing so which is another reason why I connect with Mary J. Blige.

K: Hmmmm, we have a lot in store for you guys this year starting off with a brand new single and video. “#NoLove” is my NEW single written by Grammy nominated songwriter @lovethesass one of the most amazing songwriters I’ve ever met and produced by @cwallace85 a Texas native who produced Beyonce’s “Upgrade You”. We have recorded a new mixtape” COV2” that will be released late February and an EP “Confessions of a Virgo 2” with an April 2013 release date. I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. It shows so much growth in the lyrics, vocal and concept. I’m so excited. (Smile)

HT: Have you toured and performed internationally as of yet or is that something in the works?

HT: What do you hope your music would do for your fans and anyone listening to your music and lyrics?

K: Oooh you don’t know how many times I’ve envisioned, wrote down and planned my first tour.

K: I live to inspire, to motivate, and to uplift. I want my music to give someone the ability to dream, to

38 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

step out on faith and to follow the dreams that God placed in their hearts. HT: What do you do on your downtime? K: Downtime, ugh’ I hate it. My mom will always tell me Kiyana you have to sit still sometimes and give your body and your brain a break. Like right now I’m sitting in front of Netflix because I’ve been traveling for a month and I get back to Atlanta and now I have the flu. I always want to be working. I’m an addict which is another Virgo trait. We love to work. If I’m not making progress I feel like my team and I are doing something wrong. I absolutely love family time. My family keeps me grounded. HT: For the last word, what would you like to tell your fans and Entrigue Magazine readers?

K: After a year on the road and development, I’m hungry like never before. @artists1st and #TeamKiyana thank you so much for your continuing support. Entrigue, I thank you for this opportunity to give my voice to those who care to listen. I love you all and I’ll always love you. Begin to prepare yourselves for this year. Continue to create undeniable work ethics and keep God first. I desire success as you desire to breathe. Music and the gift of song was my gift from God. BUSINESS Would You Do It Again? By Kandia Haynesworth Now that 2012 is officially behind us, entrepreneurs should make it a priority reflecting back on last year. Examining your business's practices, strategies, profits and losses will place you directly in the “know” zone. Knowing what your decisions have caused, makes deciding whether to continue or not, easy. Before you read any further, consider if your end results for 2012 makes you happy? Let's review why you feel the way you do. I recommend investing time into reviewing your marketing and advertising strategies over the next two weeks. Review your campaigns and promotions, but most importantly the results it produced. Look at your expenses, rate of new sales, obtaining new clients and consider what is necessary to reproduce a successful game plan or what needs to be done to prevent loss and failure. Before you become discouraged by homework, make it simple to joggle your thoughts by taking three separate sheets of lined paper and title them with HAPPY, UNHAPPY and GAME PLAN. Next, number it. You've probably guessed that I am recommending that you write down the practices, systems in place, and strategies that have produced these results. The Game Plan should state what you've done to have caused it. This makes answering the question “would you do it again?” quick and simple. No one works towards practicing a strategy that have failed them! Especially, when it stares you in the face! If your results were successful, write down what made it work, how you plan to repeat the process or make it better for a greater outcome. You can use this to develop goals for your business this year as well. Simply list your goal on the HAPPY list. Then write down what it is you need to do to achieve it on your GAME PLAN list. In some cases, you may not know what the game plan needs to be to achieve your goal. I recommend writing down your plan to find out. It may be that you need to do research, find a mentor, watch videos, volunteer in an environment where you can obtain knowledge and skills that will ultimately help you enable you to reaching your achievement. This practice works well for examining your business internally. Write down what your business needs on the HAPPY list. Next, state what the requirements would be to obtain. Your needs could be upgrading your business from a sole proprietary to a LLC., hiring an assistant, developing a website, or reducing expenses. Achieving anything that your business needs not only gives you peace of mind but it Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 41

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR END FISCAL CLIFF BILL By Gordon Jackson

Most Americans will pay higher federal taxes in 2013 under the new agreement. One reason is because for the past two years wage earners contribution to social security was only 4.2%, which was lowered in 2011 to put more money in wage earner’s pockets. The rate goes back up to 6.2% this January, meaning for example Americans earning $30,000 a year will face an average tax increase of $461 per year, households earning between $40,000 and $50,000 a year face an average tax increase of $579 this year and households making between $50,000 and $75,000 a year will face an average tax hike of $822. Employees will take home a little less with each paycheck. The richest households face the biggest tax hikes, The income tax rate rises to 39.6% from 35% for individuals making more than $400,000 and $450,000 for married couples. Those earning $113,700 (Social Security Maximum) will pay an additional $2,280 per year. Estates will be taxed at a top rate of 40% (35% in 2012) with the first 5 million in value exempted for individual estates and 10 million for family estates. The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) which is designed to make sure the very wealthy pay at least some income tax will be adjusted for inflation. This prevents nearly 60 million middle and upper-middle income taxpayers from being hit with a tax bill averaging $3,000. The new agreement will also extend tax benefits to the middle class wage earners. The Child Tax Credit, The Earned Income Tax Credit, The College Tuition Credit, deductions for $250 of class room expenses are amongst the tax credits that will be extended for five more years. In addition, jobless benefits for long term unemployed, has been extended for one year. The agreement does not address any increase in the nation’s debt ceiling, which combined with the delay of automatic spending cuts - sets up the distinct possibility of another cliff-like battle in February. President Obama states, “While neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted, this agreement is the right thing to do for our country”.

Devyn Rose Pieces Interview by Elias Xavier

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 47

Devyn Rose D.E.V.Y.N.

Devyn Rose was born in Mt Vernon, New York but moved to Bridgeport Connecticut at the age of 16. While studying dance at the Broadway Dance Center she learned various forms of dance including hip-hop, house, jazz and ballet. Her interest not only resided in dance but in fashion and music. Devyn Rose had many appearances in various fashion shows locally and nationally. Although she enjoyed dance and fashion, her true passion was and continues to be music. With her current contacts in the fashion industry she took the opportunity to give vocal performances at various fashion shows as well as open mic competitions where she eventually was discovered by a gentleman named Dame Grease who is a multi-platinum producer. On the road to success Devyn Rose worked behind the scenes with many of today’s artists such as N.O.R.E., 3 6 Mafia, KURUPT, Mims, Jae Millz, French Montana, Max B and many others. She also released a mixtape in 2008 entitled “Move Over Paris Hilton, There’s a New It Girl”, hosted by New York’s POWER 105.1’s DJ Suss One”. In 2009 Ron Hunter, a former Lifestyle and Marketing Rep for KOCH Records hooked up with her and produced the single “Get it Off” followed by a remix featuring Young Money’s “Jae Millz”. Devyn Rose released an EP entitled “D.E.V.Y.N” which is a three part series. In my interview with the beautiful and talented Devyn Rose we discuss this and more. 48 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

The Interview

EX: After studying different forms of dance at the Broadway Dance Center, did you take what you learned from there and use it in any professional capacity? DR: On a professional capacity, I used what I learned at BDC in my performance dance routines. I practiced many types of dance, my first introduction was poppin n lockin but once I was introduced to Jazz, I fell in love. EX: Before being discovered by Dame Grease at the BMI open mic, did you perform at other open mics and what was the response from the crowd and agents or professionals in attendance? The reason I ask this is because as some artist grow in their craft they make some mistakes along the way but they take from that and learn and eventfully improve on their performances. DR: I performed at many showcases prior to the BMI open mic. My first show ever, I was horrible! Yes, horrible!! I was nervous, my mouth became dry, and my voice wasn’t strong. The response? I received claps at the end also encouragement from people I call “YES” men, it can also be women too. These are people who will tell you oh that was awesome, but in the back of their mind you were ordures which is French for garbage, but I knew I could do better. Over time I have grown so much and learned and I know that as an artist, there is always room for growth. I am never satisfied. I’m excited and amped about a project, but never satisfied, I always want more and try to improve my voice, my sound, my writing and everything. I want to reach a point where greatness can’t be denied and won’t be mistaken. EX: Prior to you taking hold of your music career you were a model performing in fashion shows. How was that experience for you and what did you take away from your modeling experience? DR: Modeling for me, doing fashion shows and photo shoots, was okay, it was just an easy way to make some money to pay for school. I never wanted to be the next big butt model or the next Tyra or anything but since fashion and music go hand in hand and I love both, at a lot of these shows besides walking down the runway, I would get the opportunity to perform my music in between sets which was neat.

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 49

EX: In the beginning when you began to write music did you receive formal training or did you learned from others already in the business or was this something that flowed naturally. DR: When it comes to my songwriting, I never received any formal training. I actually started out writing poems, which eventually turned into songwriting, so for me it flowed naturally. As a songwriter I am always inspired by some of the best in the industry. EX: What or who is it that is inspiring this love of music you have? DR: I’ve always loved music, ever since I was a little girl. When I was allowed to listen to music, that’s right allowed, my mom and dad listened to Light FM KTU. I think that is why I have always loved to dance {laughter}. If any of you listen to KTU, you will know what I am talking about. Music is therapy for me. I am inspired by everything around me, things I see and life itself. I love creating, turning my dreams, situations, and cravings into a song. Music feeds my soul and it is mouthwatering. ooOT! On another note, my inspirations behind my sound came from listening to Whitney Houston, Deniece Williams, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Janet Jackson and many others. I took what I learned from them and made it my own, the DR sound. EX: Entrigue Magazine attends fashion shows like New York’s Couture Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz, Philly fashion week and so forth, have you performed as a singer in fashion shows such as those? DR: Not yet, but I would LOVE to! EX: Your prior stage name was Tanya T6, what was thought behind the creation of that name and also what is the thought behind the name Devyn Rose? DR: The name Tanya aka T6/Tanya T6 was given to me by Dame Grease. Tanya is my birth name and as far as T6, T is for Tanya and 6 is for six-pack. To make a long story short, I’ve always had a six-pack and my friends would call me Tanya aka the 6 pack girl. Corny, so Grease changed it up and gave me that name and that is the name I started running with. Tanya T6 was me on the come-up. I’m passed that

50 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

phase. Devyn Rose was a name I held on to for a long time, and I said when I reach a certain level in my career I will change into that name because DR is who I was destined to be. Devyn stands for “poet” which for me hits home because I started writing poems earlier on in life. Here is what each letter in Devyn means to me: Desirable Exclusive Victorious Young Natural EX: Nice! read that you worked behind the scene with hip hop artist such as N.O.R.E., Kurupt and others. Behind the scenes, does that mean working as a background vocalist or helping to mix beats? DR: I was given many opportunities to work behind the scenes with many well known artists as a vocalist. I called myself the hook and bridge girl. Working with Dame Grease you never know who to expect in the studio, so every time I went there someone needed a hook, a bridge, a moan or whatever and there I was! EX: Are you currently in the studio working on a new single for a follow up to the album “D.E.V.Y.N.” and when can we expect the release of the single and a new album? DR: D.E.V.Y.N was released on 11/2/12 via Soundcloud as a free EP. It was then released on Frostwire on 12/27/12. The first single/video we released was “Pieces”. I am currently working on the last installment of my EP series which is dropping this quarter!

“Music is therapy for me. I am inspired by everything around me, things I see and life itself. “

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 51

EX: I like the last single “Pieces”. It’s kind of a mean slow jam. {Laughing} The things talked about in the song, is this personal life experience of your own? DR: {Laughter} I know! This for me is a personal life experience, a true story. I basically used this guy as a rebound to get over my ex and didn’t know how to tell him. Sh*t happens, don’t judge me lol. EX: {laughter} What other artist would you love to work with on a music track? DR: Miguel, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, Drake, too many to name! EX: You recently started a bi-weekly webisode called “Girl Talk w/ Devyn Rose”. What is the webisodes about and let our readers know where they can view it?

Star Murphy

Entrigue Magazine | January 2013 63

It was at the young age of seven when Star Murphy first realized her potential and her desire to perform as a singer. From performing her solo act at a major Broadway production in middle school to joining the choir and becoming a founding chapter member of “Women of Music”, Murphy knew she was on the right track. Teaming up with Joe Major & DJ Wheezy, Murphy kept close to the entertainment game by becoming a promoter bringing celebrities to Nashville to perform at college events until the time came for her to step on the stage herself to share her vocal gifts to her fans and anyone that would listen. Murphy has opened up for such artist as Bobby V, Yo Gotti, Lloyd, Webbie, Boosie, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Big K.R.I.T, Plies, and R. Kelly and many others. With her fan base expanding from local to national Murphy was able to gain additional support from mixed tape DJ’s to various DJ’s from several radio stations including “Music Choice” requesting to spin her music specifically with her first single from 2010 “Swagg On” which featured Waka Flocka Flame. The single would eventually gain over twenty thousand downloads from hotnewhiphop.com and gaining further recognition. Murphy and her team soon after released the official video for her new single “Let’s Do It”. 64 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

In 2010 Star Murphy released her first EP entitled “I Am StaR&B” with TapeMaster’s Inc. Murphy’s success continued with more appearances at various events and interviews and being featured in many magazines, blogs, and publications such as the Urban News Music Network, World Star Hip-Hop, Concrete Magazine, Singer’s Room, Ozone, Stevie Mack Blog Talk Radio, DV8, the Nashville Scene and has been recently featured on Soul2SoulMusicBuzz.com and now in July 2013 issue of Entrigue Magazine. Star Murphy took home the 2011 Hip Hop in the Ville R&B Artist of the Year Award and the prestigious Southern Entertainment Award’s 2011 Independent R&B Artist of the Year Award. In August 2011 she also received a nomination from the Underground Music Awards which was held in New York City and she put on an astonishing performance at the UMA’s that very night. 2012 has been another busy year for the talented Star Murphy performing at many events and many shows, interviews plus racking up a lot of studio time laying down new tracks. Murphy starts 2013 still going strong. She is set to release her first EP in early 2013 and if 2012 is any indication of what we can expect then 2013 should be an even greater year for this talented writer and songstress. http://www.starmurphy.com http://twitter.com/starmurphy http://www.facebook.com/starmurphymusic

Artist Reviews

Beyoncé announces in a Facebook post that the group will release its first album since nearly 8 years. The album entitled “Love Songs” will include “Nuclear”, a track produced by Pharell Williams and it will also include a compilation of classic DC recordings between 1997 and 2004. The album can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com and the title will be released on January 29, 2013.

Artist Reviews Maverick Gaither releases his first album entitled “Be My Music” under the label Maverick Gaither / Mavmani MUS Records. Gaither’s music exhibits smooth and sexy tones and lyrics and brings to mind the styling of Will Downing and Luther Vandross but Gaither certainly has a style all his own. The album consists of soothing R&B love songs over smooth jazz tones and a few up tempo dance tracks including a track with Cheryl Pepsi Riley entitled “For The Love of My Life”. Gaither’s styling is a style all too rare with today’s R&B music and something solely needed. This is one album you should make sure you purchase. The album is also available on iTunes.

Starar

Artist Reviews Starar is a pop, rock, country brother and sister duo from Lincoln, LIN, UK who names are Jenna Starar and Steven Starar. Co-lead vocalist Jenna Starar has been playing music for nearly 10 years. Both are self-taught musicians learning the keyboard and Jenna also plays the guitar. The duo plays a variety of musical styles including country, rock, pop, jazz and even R&B soul. In some tracks you can hear the masterfully blending of country, pop and rock in such tunes as “Christmas Message”, “Again, Again, Again” and other tracks. Steven’s smooth delivery on his track “Wind Inside of Me” puts to mind Lou Gramm, one of the lead singers of Foreigner but without the higher tones. Off their mini-album “One Good Year”, he is also compared to David Bowie. Starar remains an independent group due to the fact that many labels restrict artist to a certain style of music the label feels it would rather distribute. Starar decided they want to give the fans the type of music fans wish to hear and at the same time enjoy their own creative freedom. Starar is not opposed to signing with a label and when the right one comes along they will make their decision but for now they will stick to distribution and publishing deals to put out great music fans all over can enjoy.

Rita Ora

If there is a sense when Rita Ora walks into a room that a star has already been ordained from above then nobody appears to have told the young Londoner and future pop princess herself. She has not an air or a grace about her. She greets the bar staff dotted in the hostelries of her neighborhood like old friends, mostly because they are. She bumps knuckles with the coat check chicks and management with the same egalitarian smile. Friends stop by for a brief ‘Hi’. Strangers look on with a discernible, barely contained ‘wow’. There is no mistaking the fact that Saturday night in Notting Hill is brightened by a touch of Rita’s special aura. She might not have been born this way, but she was recognizably named it. Buzz acts come and go, but the pertinent feeling amongst those that have heard the results of her knockout first round in the recording studio as a bona fide solo star, accompanied by a blue chip roster of production hands, is that the effect Rita Ora has locally is about to translate to the upper terrains of the global pop market. A composite of street-smarts of the metropolitan life she was schooled in and pure, urgent, otherworldly star quality, she makes for a brilliantly contradictory mix. Rita is one of the few British female singers that has emerged singing the opening bars of her career ready for world star status. So why is she so palpably shy of celebrating herself? “Because, you know what? I might seem confident about all this. It might be all I’ve ever wanted. It might even be all I’m ever any good at. But I am still really, really nervous about it all.”

76 Entrigue Magazine | January 2013

The fact that she has already made British chart history as the vocalist on one of the first ever drum and bass number one singles here, DJ Fresh’s “Hot Right Now”, is almost brushed aside. “That was Fresh’s triumph,” she gifts the producer, though it’s clear her soaring vocals lend the propulsive tune a hefty portion of its personality. “He started a tiny drum and bass record label back in the day, now here he is with its first number one? That’s incredible for him. He owns that.” Regardless, the breakout smash success of her first number one looks very much like the dress rehearsal, the overture or prelude to the main act: Rita Ora solo. If “Hot Right Now” has temporarily rocked the British pop chart, her solo material is about to blow its mind. Rita Ora began singing as at age six. This is where the magic started: “What drew me most to singing was the fact that I could make a noise that made me feel good about myself. I used to sing poems. It was just about doing something that inspired a reaction. It was about self-esteem, even back then, at a young age. I made a noise, the reaction was positive. Simple as that. I could sing my feelings. It was a new, exciting way of expressing myself. This brand new communication device. I understood the power of it straight away.” Rita was born the second of two girls in war-torn Kosovo at the start of the 90s. Her mother, father and elder sister decamped to London before her first birthday. “I wasn’t made to feel aware of what we had come from,” she says, “but obviously when you grow up you get to learn something of what your parents went through to get you where you are today. I owe them everything.” Guided by her innate performance instinct, as well as her developing and hugely impressive powerhouse vocal range, she began dipping her toes into the local music industry in West London as an early teen. She managed to keep one step ahead of the stop-starts and false alarms of anyone treading tentatively into the shark pond of the London creative elite, enjoying notable highs.

Rita has a natural propensity toward mixing street-beats with pop. Her music is the contents of her young brain spilling out into song. The sounds she heard on the streets of Notting Hill, the brassy calypso and raga of Carnival mingling with the ringtone pop emanating from fast food joints; the splash and funk of the locale’s black music history engaging with the elegant noise of gentrification. If she sounds black and white, hard and soft, rich and poor, it is because her world is full of those competing factions too. She just learned to set it all to song. “My first record,” she says, “had to sound exactly like my life.” Equally, her brilliantly developing sense of style is a dynamic and deliberate mismatch of high and low fashion. A ball-gown, Louis Vuitton shoes and a biker jacket make perfect sense to Rita’s unique fashion instinct. Costume jewelry is interchangeable with opulent bling. She says working with a stylist “is just like playing dressing up with your friends before you go for a night out, with a few more contacts.” Rita loves to rock platinum blonde hair. At the prospect of going brunette, she recalls: “I tried a wig on in Top Shop recently and just thought, never again.” She also loves her signature red lipstick, and was delighted to see young fans at her recent London showcase who had already caught on to her signature red smackers. “They were all rocking red lipstick on the front row! Yes. Fierce.” Though Rita is signed to a modeling agency, it is clearly in music where she is about to shine. Her debut UK single “R.I.P.” is a thrusting, compelling ode to lost love. Sitting around the peripheral borders of pop, R&B, rock, rave and dusted off with a sugar-coating of immaculate heartbreak, “R.I.P.” thunders upon the very first listen. It was written by the current master-craftsman of relationship drama, hip hop connoisseur, Drake: “I had the hugest crush on Drake,” she gushes. “Then I met him, sweetest guy ever and it evolved into a great friendship. I can’t believe he gave me such a great song!” The song was produced by the titans of underground/overground crossover British dance, Chase and Status and also features a guest rap from that pocket dynamo, Tinie Tempah. “I wanted to keep it British,” Rita explains. “I need to rep for the UK!” Yet for all its invincible, diamond-plated credentials, this is very much Rita Ora’s opening shot, and she really does own it.

Rita’s debut U.S. single, “How We Do (Party),” is an infectious pop-rock party anthem paired with her stunning vocals. The single first premiered on New York’s Z100 on March 23rd and quickly became Just Jared & KIIS FM’s Pick of the Week. Lyrically, “How We Do (Party)” celebrates being young and having fun, as Rita sings, “We’re tearing up the town, ‘cause that’s just how we do” over production duo The Runners’ irresistible guitar and drum driven beats. Rita and The Runners have created one of the most addictive tunes of 2012, and “How We Do (Party)” is sure to be an essential on every playlist this summer. “I had to learn my pop instinct,” she says. “The lyrics had to be tough because the song is so immediate. I wanted that twist. This is about the feeling of waking up in the morning and wanting to take another whiskey shot,” she says, looking embarrassed for all of five seconds, “We’ve all been there. Haven’t we?” There’s plenty more where that came from. Rita Ora has fashioned a debut album that is ready to stake its claim on the world stage. She has become a huge priority for JAY Z’s Roc Nation. The music icon introduced her personally to the American public with a surprise visit to one of the US’s premier radio stations Z100 earlier this year. “I was so nervous!’ she enthuses “but so excited too!”. The superstar cast of artists that have lined up to work with her reads like an award ceremony of modern urban musical excellence, from the left-field margins right to the heart of mainstream, including Diplo, Switch, Stargate, and The-Dream, in addition to Chase & Status and Drake. The result is a monopoly stronghold on future pop supremacy. “I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been,” she says, “that these people have even given me the time of day, let alone clicked with me in making my album.” She name drops “Rock The Life” - a ridiculously catchy, mid-tempo R&B growler - and the beautifully delivered ballad, “Love and War” as her other album favorites, before the world picks its own. It’s time for Rita Ora to dive in headfirst and see how her unique talent plays out. With support slots on the DJ Fresh and Coldplay tours this year she’s ready. ‘I am so nervous,’ she repeats. ‘Now is when I’m put to the test. I don’t even know what to expect. I have to dive in. I’ve just got to do it.
