FLAVOR OF THE DAY Today and Friday

New Crime Stoppers efforts dramatically increase tips attorney. In March 2012, Crime Stoppers of Waukesha County went online with its new website and a system through which individuals could send in tips by email, text, the Crime Stoppers website or Facebook. “We had to make a significant financial investment to make the change; however, the incredible increase in tips that have helped solve crime has made it all worthwhile,” Schimel said.

Crime Stoppers offers an opportunity for individuals to receive a reward for providing information that helps law enforcement solve and prevent crimes. Informants may remain completely anonymous. Prior to March 2012, the only way to submit a tip was by calling a toll-free phone number. The new system, called Tip Soft, is much more accessible and has resulted in an incredible increase in tip activity.

fund the tip payments. The Crime Stoppers of Waukesha County website is www.stopcrimewaukesha.com, and is also accessible through links on the websites for most of the county’s school districts and police departments, as well as through the Waukesha County and Waukesha County district attorney websites.

The large increase in tip activity has also led to a dramatic increase in the rewards that are paid out. Because Crime Stoppers of Waukesha County is not government-funded, community funds are needed. Contributions are taxdeductible. A second recent digital improvement is the launch of a PayPal account for individuals wanting to make online donations to Crime Stoppers to help

Hartland approves firearms ordinance HARTLAND — During its meeting Monday, the Hartland Village Board adopted a firearms ordinance which removed the prohibition of open carry in parks. The creation of the ordinance was brought about by an incident in Oconomowoc where an unidentified man was photographed with a gun at a park. Village Administrator David Cox said allowing people to openly carry firearms in parks means the village is now in compliance with state law. The Hartland Finance Department also sought permission to submit a water rate case application with the Board Service Commission to be allowed to increase the water rate by 3 percent. According to a village memo, the average Hartland household would see an approximate increase of $1 to $3 on their quarterly water bill

The representative has only the slimmest chance of being informed because his cabin on Mole Lake in Forest County contains neither telephone nor radio. Monday may bring fur-

SOUND OFF with the new rate. Cox said several years ago, “the Village Board decided not to implement a large increase that would have been justified based on a full rate study approved by the PSC. Instead, a smaller increase was implemented and the village has taken smaller increases annually thereafter based on PSC regulations. While that continues to move the Water Utility in the right direction, annually a review is performed to monitor when a full rate study might be needed. The hope is that by using small regular increases, we will be able to avoid a large spike in rates.”
