DIRECTOR'S NOTES On June 29, 2012 Tray Franklin, age 20, was fatally shot at the corner of Sutter and Ralph Avenues in Brownsville, Brooklyn. His name did not even make the paper when his death was reported that day; instead the story read: "13 Men Shot as Gunfire Erupts Across the City." Tray Franklin was one of thousands of young men who senselessly lost his life and has only been tallied as a statistic by our society. Headlines tell of violence on our streets daily; often there will be a body count posted of those victims, various cities will be listed, and the number of violent deaths listed as accurate, sterile data—emotionless text on a screen. But, the next time you hear a name mentioned in passing or, worse, another stark homicide statistic reported about our city or nation, stop for a moment and think of those left behind by these deaths and the loss our community suffers. We are a nation losing citizens and future generations daily—whether taken either by anger, sport, or simply by accident. Lives end on the streets daily, but our awareness, our compassion, and our empathy must endure. We can not allow our hope of creating a world that embodies the promise of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" to be extinguished. Nothing about life is casual. Tray Franklin was cherished and he made our world better by his presence. brownsville song (b-side for tray) is a play that brings Tray Franklin's story to life, and the countless others like him. The B side of a cassette or record consisted of songs that typically did not get air play, so it's appropriate that Kimber Lee has chosen to add this to the title of her play. Tray's life mattered. So, let us play the B side. Let us hear, and honor, his entire story. -D. Lynn Meyers
