Jay White: “America’s Diamond in Concert” to Benefit Brigid Collins Family Support Center by Marla Bronstein Fans of Neil Diamond take note: Jay White: “America’s Diamond in Concert” is coming to the Mount Baker Theatre on November 29 at 8pm. White delivers a spot-on tribute performance, and the show promises to be a world-class concert event, according to Bill Whitaker, music director and producer of this performance. White currently lives in Las Vegas, and is originally from Canada, just outside the city of Detroit, where he considers home. White discovered his Diamondlikeness while expressing his own personal appreciation for the music. He eventually moved to Vegas where he worked in the “Legends” show. White left “Legends” when he developed the “America’s Diamond in Concert.” In 2010, he completed an eight-year run at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Since then, this show has been touring the country, and will be making its Whatcom County debut. Whitaker says that Jay White does the best Neil Diamond Tribute he has ever seen. In a January 2002 interview, Neil Diamond was asked about all of the Neil tribute performers and replied, “I’ve heard a few of them and I’m always complimented by their efforts and dedication, but my favorite is a young man named Jay White.”

Whitaker has been a Bellingham resident since 2007. He promises that people can expect a fun, uplifting, entertaining, and overall great show. White’s warm personality connects with audiences Jay White. everywhere they play, and those who see this show will become fans, regardless of age or musical taste. Whitaker has arranged for $1 from each ticket sold to be donated to Brigid Collins Family Support Center. Katie Rose, Development Specialist for Brigid Collins, is grateful to members of the community like Whitaker who support Brigid Collins as a worthy non-profit. In its 24th year of existence, the programs of Brigid Collins support the healthy development of all families, promoting family support as a means to prevent child abuse. Originally created to serve children as a response to childabuse, and to provide a place for help, assistance and support to achieve justice, they have also developed programs to help parents and community members to break the cycle of child-abuse. Current programs include workshops and programs designed to shift cultural norms. The focus is to teach all adults how they can prevent, recognize and react responsibly to suspicions of child sexual abuse. Theirs is a simple wish, hope and goal… that every child gets the childhood they deserve. Rose is excited for additional fundraising events during the month of November that include the Annual Breaking the

Cycle of Violence Breakfast on November 13. For information about this event or to find out about their services, check their website at www.brigidcollins.org or call 360-734-4616. Whitaker hopes the success of the “America’s Diamond” show will evolve into an annual show, to benefit other worthy non-profits in Whatcom County. Ticket prices for Jay White: “America’s Diamond in Concert” range from $29.99 to $34.99 and can be purchased at the Mount Baker Theatre ticket office or online at www.mountbakertheatre.com. A Light in the Darkness: Songs of Hope and Comfort by Osa Hale As the earth spins further away from the sun, the days get shorter and the nights, colder and longer. Here in the Northwest, people pile on layers of clothing and pour hot cups of tea and starlings perch on bare branches. In Bellingham, Western Washington University’s Concert Choir celebrates this time of dusky change with an annual performance known as “A Light in the Darkness: Songs of Hope and Comfort.” The concert focuses on the human experience of taking strength in song and hope in the knowledge that new life will eventually emerge out of the cold ground. Choral director Leslie Guelker-Cone explained that the concert is meant to celebrate winter, and all the emotions and experiences that it includes. “We wanted a theme that was not solely holiday inspired, but that was instead more broadly reflective of the unique character of fall and winter in the Pacific Northwest,” Guelker-Cone said. “We wanted to focus on many elements, both bright and dark: rain, snow, darkness, light, nature, comfort, nostalgia, loss, hope, gratitude, family, community.” This year, Guelker-Cone says the focus will be on nature in the Northwest, including a bird-inspired set, complete with local birdcalls. The natural theme will be complemented by elements that are always popular parts of the concert: candle-lit poetry and organ and vocal solos. The concert will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, showcasing the talent of the university choir. This talent is amplified by community support and feedback, GuelkerCone says. “It’s such a delight for us to be able to sing in the wonderful acoustical space of St. Paul’s — it’s a place that was made for choral music, and hearing the choir in that warm, welcoming space always gives me a thrill,” Guelker-Cone said. “I also love the positive energy that our audience brings into the room; it’s great to feed off that energy and to include our listeners in the creation of a joyous and inspiring event.” There will be both a 2pm matinee and a 7pm evening performance on Sunday, November 23. Tickets can be purchased at the WWU Box Office, $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Entertainment News Northwest ~ November 2014

From Aïda to Zauberflöte — Skagit Opera Hits All High Notes by Christopher Key Famed dramatic soprano Helen Traubel once said, “The trouble with opera in the United States is that it is trying to sell caviar to a hamburger-eating country.” If that’s true, then Skagit Opera seems to have found a way to put caviar on a bun. Their productions not only thrill opera buffs, but are also accessible to us hoi-polloi. Singing them in English helps a lot. Singing them in McIntyre Hall helps even more. Singing them with the best talent in the Northwest seals the deal. Our local opera company is offering a sensational season for 2014-2015 that

10

will continue to build their audiences and introduce more people to the thrills of Extreme Singing. The first offering is probably the mostproduced opera ever: Giuseppe Verdi’s Aïda. Its remarkable appeal is probably due to the powerful story that has become part of our racial consciousness. Soprano Corinna Quilliam, who sings the title role, attended SedroWoolley High School and majored in musical theater at Washington State University. She began her opera studies with Metropolitan Opera soprano Mary Curtis Verna and went on to perform major roles with Burgas Opera in Bulgaria before returning to the Seattle area. Andrew Lunsford, who was supposed to sing Radames, injured his knee, underwent surgery and withdrew from the production. He’s being replaced by Mathew Edwardsen. “You would not believe what I had to go through to find someone who already knew the role (there was too little time to learn it) and was available,” said Skagit Opera Managing Director Mitchell Kahn. “You will have to wait for my book to come out.” Aïda performs November 7, 9, 14 and 16 at McIntyre Hall. The organization will spread its wings a bit this season without involving fledermice (yes, I just made up that word). The second offering is a concert version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute. This is a one-time-only performance at Bellingham’s lovely Lairmont Manor on January 18, 2015. Reservations by e-mail to info@skagitopera.org, pay at the door or mail to Skagit Opera, P.O. Box 1756, Mount Vernon, WA. Putting the exclamation point at the end of a fabulous season, Skagit Opera will return to McIntyre Hall with Giaochino Rossini’s take on the classic Entertainment News Northwest ~ November 2014

folktale Cinderella. Rossini’s title for the opera is a bit more flamboyant: La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo (Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant). Despite that somewhat overblown title, the story is one that everyone, even us burger-eating Americans, knows by heart. What most of us don’t know is that Rossini wrote it in just three weeks, partly by plagiarizing his own works for some of the music and by enlisting a collaborator, Luco Agolini. In this variation of the traditional Cinderella story, the wicked stepmother is replaced by a wicked stepfather, Don Magnifico. The Fairy Godmother is replaced by Alidoro, a philosopher and the Prince’s tutor. Cinderella is identified not by her glass slipper but by her bracelet. Cinderella plays February 27, March 1, 6 and 8 at McIntyre Hall. Tickets for all McIntyre Hall performances may be purchased by calling the box office at 360-416-7727 ext. 2 or online at www.mcintyrehall.org.

The Theater Arts Guild’s White Christmas by Osa Hale I’m dreaming of a white Christmas... Just like the ones I used to know... Snow on the ground. Strings of lights wound around trees and window frames. Hot cocoa and candy canes and little tiny oranges. All of these bring to mind the same time of year, that special time that Bing Crosby sang about and that the Theater Arts Guild will be celebrating with its cheery rendition of White Christmas. White Christmas was originally a 1954 musical film, starring Bing Crosby. Fifty years after its film debut, the musical was reborn as a stage performance. There is something magical that happens when this vintage tale is given new life by theater, something that is timeless and nostalgic all at once. It captures the holiday spirit in that way. What do audiences have to look forward to once they walk through the doors of the historic Lincoln Theatre for one of these spectacular Guild performances? A heartwarming tale of two World War II army buddies and, of course, musical performers: Bob Wallace (played by Seattle talent Dustin Moore) and Phil Davis (brought to life by the fantastic Alex Hollingsworth). The two pals get mixed up with a pair of beautiful

and talented sisters (Betty and Judy, played by the lovely Karen Pollack and Torie Gieson, respectively) and the audience is treated to an evening of hijinks and romance, all with a wonderful musical score. The charming romp culminates on Christmas Eve, with declarations of love and the promised snow falling. This uplifting holiday classic is a wonderful theater experience for the entire family. It has a beautiful score, lovable characters, big laughs, and truly tender moments. The stage production, introduces new roles and fills out the film characters. There are added numbers from Irving Berlin (Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, Fallin’ Out of Love Can be Fun, and Let Yourself Go, to name a few). The TAG production brings the added elements of truly local talent, with people of all ages taking the stage to bring the musical to life. Once you add Miranda Quinton and Suzann McLamb to the choreography and Jennifer Ceresa as the vocal director, the show is sure to be fantastic. Audiences will leave with a smile! Cally Holden, director of the show, had this to say, “This is a young cast with a sprinkling of the over 50 group. It is a pleasure to be working with such a sincere, talented hard working cast. They are full of energy. For some it is their first show, others have theatrical experiences under their belt. Together they are simply amazing! Their heart, feet, and voices have been rehearsing since August.” Entertainment News Northwest ~ November 2014

A performance this marvelous shouldn’t be limited to one or two shows, and TAG has scheduled enough showtimes that there is no excuse to miss out! White Christmas will be at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon on November 26, 28, 29, and 30, as well as December 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 13. Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 will feature matinee performances at 2pm while the remaining shows will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets cost between $10 and $24 and can be purchased by visiting the Lincoln Theatre’s website, or by calling the box office at 360-336-8955. There will also be a very special matinee performance for senior citizens on December 2 at the Lincoln Theatre at 2pm. Tickets for that show may be obtained by calling Dan Toomey at 360-305-8455. TAG would like to honor WWII Veterans and invite them to see White Christmas with special seating and recognition. Please call Cally Holden at 360-770-5444 to make arrangements to attend a performance. So as the days get colder and the jingling of bells becomes more frequent, you won’t even need that spiced apple cider to keep you warm... but have a cup, anyway! Then head over to Mount Vernon and treat yourself to the Theater Arts Guild’s rendition of the thoroughly heart-warming White Christmas. May your days be merry, and bright... And may all your Christmases be white.

Light the Night Benefit Auction by Joanna Nesbit Hospice care is a critical service that provides comfort, dignity, and peace to individuals of all income levels with limited life expectancy. Whatcom Hospice serves Whatcom County residents by bringing much-needed services right into their home or by caring for an individual at its Bellingham-area Hospice House. On Saturday, November 15, the Whatcom Hospice Foundation will hold its annual benefit auction, “Light the Night” Gala Auction, at the Silver Reef Event Center, 4876 Haxton Way, Ferndale. The fun and sophisticated event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Whatcom Hospice. Last year’s event was so successful it raised a record $415,000 in one evening. Part of what made it so successful was Silver Reef’s large event space, which allowed for a recordbreaking crowd of 470 attendees. Event organizers expect a similar turnout this year. “Our focus is to raise money to support the services offered under the Hospice umbrella and also to fund Hospice House, Donna Edquist, Auction Chair. which provides onsite end-oflife care that individuals might not otherwise have access to,” says Donna Edquist, auction chair. “Last year’s event was downright magical. The community was so generous and supportive. I was moved beyond belief.” The gala begins at 5pm with appetizers, champagne, and a popular silent auction of some 200 items such as restaurant certificates, fine wines, and event tickets. Dinner is served at approximately 7pm, with diners seated at tables for 10, followed by a rousing dessert dash. Last year, the dash alone raised $38,000. The event culminates with a live auction of some 25-30 bigger-ticket items, such as event packages, trips, handcrafted furniture, boat cruises, and much more. In its mission to provide comfort and preserve dignity at the end of life, Whatcom Hospice offers a collection of services, including skilled nursing care in an individual’s home with an interdisciplinary team of nurses, medical social workers, home health aides, chaplains, registered dietitians and others. For those without a caregiver at home, or

The gala event wouldn’t be possible without the help of very generous sponsors. Gala partners are Alcoa Intalco Works, Barron Heating, Barron Smith Daugert, PLLC, CSS Communications, Mathew Dorsch DDS, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, Puget Sound Energy, Regence BlueShield, and Yorkston Oil Company, Inc. “Light the Night” is a chance to dress up in your finest and contribute to a great A bidder at the Whatcom cause.
