Cale Sanders (Football)

One of the most decorated players of his era, Cale Sanders (BS 04) was a prolific receiver from 1999-2003 in an offense that was built around running the ball. A First Team All-LoneStar Conference selection in 2001, he ranked seventh in the league in receptions per game to go along with 948 yards and six scores. 29 Players. 20 International Students. 10 Different Countries.

By Ryan Shumaker

If there is a textbook definition of a melting pot in collegiateathletics, look no further than the ENMU men’s soccer program.

When head coach Jon Fridal took the coaching position last year, Greyhound fans knew success would follow – and much of that success can be directly attributed to Fridal’s ability to recruit elite international players and mold them into one cohesive unit, despite the cultural differences. The secret formula to blending those cultures and producing a winning unit on the field can simply be boiled down to one word: Family.

A majority of the international players on the roster established their dreams of coming to the United States to play collegiate soccer at a very young age. Their hope was to use their talents on the field as a way to earn scholarships that would open the door for them to obtain a degree. For many, that degree sets them up with a quality of life that they may not otherwise have in their native countries.

(Seated) Craig Brand, Tommaso Favro, Drio Tiqui, Caio Pereira, Fernando Lozano, Gregory Franusic, Robert Londard, Jesus Garcia, Wilson Barahona and Jose Tabares-Ochoa.

“This opportunity means a lot for me and my family, and has given me the chance to transform my life,” freshman Lucas Tomazini said. Tomazini is one of five players on the team that hail from Brazil, one of 10 different countries represented on the roster.

“Being far from home is difficult, but Coach Fridal does his absolute best to try and make you feel as at home as possible,” England native Matthew Widdowson said. “He is quite strict, but only because he wants the best from us and for us to fulfill our potential as athletes, students and as men. He is a good role model and I am incredibly happy to work with him on a daily basis.”

The results from this support have already taken effect, both on the field and in the classroom, as the Hounds are currently right in the mix to qualify for the Heartland Conference Tournament and have already more than doubled their win total from one season ago. The team will also have multiple players nominated for all-academic awards at the conclusion of the season.

“We are a relatively young and growing team,” Scotland native Craig Brand said. “This year we can still achieve great things, but I have great ambitions for my senior year. I would love to win not only a championship but a national title here at ENMU. I trust Coach Fridal’s process and know he will take this program to the very top.”
