International English @ University of Glamorgan The Centre for International English is a vibrant hub that provides academic language courses for international students who wish to commence academic learning at the University of Glamorgan. The Centre has 16 highly qualified members of staff who have considerable experience of teaching international students. Our International Support Staff work closely with the academic staff in the Centre for International English to help you with student enrolment and accommodation sourcing. In addition, they offer full support for your social and cultural integration into the South Wales area.

Pre-sessional English Pre-sessional English is a short course designed for academically qualified students whose learning capabilities would benefit from improving their English language skills before embarking upon a foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at the University of Glamorgan. To enrol on the pre-sessional English course, you must have a valid offer from the University of Glamorgan and an IELTS score of at least 4.0 (if you have an offer for the IFP), 5.0 (if you have an offer for an undergraduate degree) or 5.5 (if you hold an offer for a postgraduate degree).

It is a 10 week course (300 hours) which is designed to: • Improve English language proficiency in the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at the level required to undertake a University qualification. • Provide study skills guidance including giving presentations, taking notes from lectures, writing assignments and exam technique. • Offer advice on how to gain the best from the variety of online and offline study materials available to you from multiple sources. For assessment, students are expected to: • Produce an original research report • Produce an extended academic essay • Deliver presentations, both individually and as part of a group • Sit a formal examination which tests reading, writing and listening skills

International Foundation Programme (IFP) Our International Foundation Programme (IFP) is an access course that is designed especially for international students who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in the UK. It prepares students for direct entry to the first year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Glamorgan by offering the opportunity to improve English language ability and study a range of subjects to the standard required for progression to undergraduate study. Students will also become familiar with UK university life, its academic requirements and unique teaching and learning approaches. Learners will be taught in small groups and assessment will be by means of coursework, tests, projects, individual and group presentations and online assessments. There are two IFP courses at the University of Glamorgan and students will be placed on the appropriate course depending on their IELTS level upon entry. Course Content: • Oral English, reading, academic writing, study skills, grammar and British studies (the selection of English modules taken will depend on English level upon entry) • Subject modules in Business, Law, Sociology or Engineering (depending on which pathway is chosen) • Key skills : Maths & Computing We currently offer two pathways, specifically designed to fit the needs of our Glamorgan degree programmes.

You must contact the university before applying to check that your chosen pathway is applicable to your own academic and language background. Students who successfully complete the IFP with a high enough grade can progress onto an undergraduate degree at Glamorgan. To enrol on the IFP your must have a valid offer from the University of Glamorgan and have an IELTS score of at least 5.0 or equivalent.

Engineering & Electronics IFP Pathway: Students wishing to study Engineering will take modules related to their chosen degree and upon fulfilment of the Engineering and English language progression criteria, will be able to progress on to the first year of undergraduate awards in the following areas:

• Aeronautical Engineering • Civil Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Electrical & Electronic Engineering
