The boat has long been a tourist and photographer’s favourite as she shimmers in the clear waters. After becoming stuck on the rocks, the ship was stripped of anything useful and left to rot, it has been described as “A piece of history frozen in time.” She has stood upright on a stone-bank for 16-years and can cast an eerie image at sunset. The vessel ran aground in March 1998 in heavy seas, during a voyage from Greece to Syria with a cargo of lumber and it is predicted that it will gradually keel over and be almost completely submerged by the end of this decade. At the time of the accident, the ship had a crew of eight who were all rescued. It was subsequently confirmed in the Lloyd’s List that the competency certificates for the Greek Captain and the Pakistani first officer were forgeries. Several plans to sink the ship in recent years did not prove popular with everyone, as residents and visitors appear to have established a deep connection to the vessel. However, experts said the ship is dangerous due to severe deterioration and a plan to sink her to form a scuba dive attraction was considered too risky.

ERDO III A few kilometres away, the Edro III, which ran aground during a major storm near the Sea Caves in December 2011, still draws crowds daily. Despite being exposed violent storms that lashed the coast this winter, the cream coloured freighter shows little sign of deterioration. “I can understand why some people would not like it, but being able to almost touch this wreck is incredible. You don’t see this kind of thing everyday,” British tourist Alan Sheldrake told the Cyprus Reporter. “It is amazing to have two brilliant wrecks so close to each other,” he added. The Albanian-owned cargo vessel ran into mechanical problems and

went adrift just before Christmas three years ago. A helicopter of the British Army stationed in Limassol, winched seven of the nine crew members of the ship up. They were brought ashore where they were given precautionary medical check-ups. The captain and the chief engineer remained on board. The crew comprised of seven Albanians and two Egyptians. In 2013, work began to remove all the diesel, hydrocarbons and marine pollutants onboard the vessel, but work stopped after the government refused to give the green light for the project to proceed due to discrepancies over the ship’s insurance policy.

ª Cyprus plans more exploratory drilling this year, says minister ENERGY MINISTER Giorgos Lakkotrypis has said on that two exploratory drilling sessions are expected to take place in 2014 and one more in 2015 in Cyprus exclusive offshore zone. He said there were encouraging prospects and called for patience. Lakkotrypis noted that two companies, the Italian-South Korean consortium ENI/KOGAS and Noble Energy, are expected within 2014 to drill exploratory wells in EEZ blocks licensed to each. French Total is expected to follow in 2015.

It was revealed last month that Prince Charles wrote to the most senior Army commander in Cyprus, as well as to the island’s president, condemning the ‘industrial scale killing’, after it was revealed that bird-trapping had increased by 54%, especially on British bases. His letter to Major-General Richard Cripwell, Commander of British Forces in Cyprus, and copied to President Nicos Anastasiades, begins: ‘I am writing with regard to the industrial-scale killing of songbirds which is currently occurring on the Cyprus Sovereign Base Area of Dhekelia “Disturbingly, autumn mist-netting levels are now much higher on this British soil than in the Republic of Cyprus, with mist netting in the SBAs estimated to have increased 180 per cent since 2002,” the Prince wrote, according to the Mail. “In particular, to ask you to have the infrastructure which permits this illegal slaughter (planted avenues of invasive acacia) to be removed from the MoDadministered land there by the start of the autumn migration period in September.” “This would not only at a stroke save hundreds of thousands of birds being killed illegally on British soil, but would also prevent significant profits from flowing into the pockets of the serious organised criminals who control this barbaric practice,” he concluded. In response to the Prince Charles letter, the SBA said they had: “allocated significant resources in its efforts to tackle this illegal activity. Over the last four years, 132 people have been convicted within the SBAs for mist-netting offences”. SBA authorities added that they continue to work closely with conservationist groups to tackle “this abhorrent illegal activity”. It is estimated that during the 2013 trapping season, 1.5 million birds were killed across Cyprus. The birds are killed and sold to restaurants for the illegal but widely available Cypriot delicacy ambelopoulia. In March, a team of international conservationists expressed serious concern at the extent of illegal killing of migratory birds and complained about a lack of help from the authorities. CABS and SPA publicly declared that a “zero tolerance policy” against songbird poaching should not be just a rhetorical political statement, but an actual, consistent and permanent effort by the competent political authorities and law enforcement agencies to protect wild bird species. Because Cyprus is a key stopover on the migration route of many birds, including blackcaps and warblers, the trapping mainly takes place during the autumn.

UN launches online archive of iconic Cyprus magazine O

n 27 March 1964 at 0500 hours, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) became operational and Lieutenant General P. S. Gyani of India assumed command of the Force. Fifty years later, UNFICYP has launched an online archive of the Blue Beret Magazine, documenting the history and happenings of the Mission from its beginnings in 1964 to the present day.

“The Blue Beret Magazine is well-known by military, police and civilian peacekeepers who have served with the Mission over the years,” says UNFICYP Spokesperson Michel Bonnardeaux.

reflecting developments here on the island as well as recounting the UN’s involvement in international conflicts from the Suez to Cambodia,” adds Bonnardeaux. Now published bi-monthly, the Blue Beret in 2014 continues to function as an internal communication tool. “These days, the Blue Beret also provides an important platform for reinforcing United Nations priorities such as women in peacekeeping, mine awareness and sustainability. For troops and police serving with the UN for the first time, it is a window onto the UN values that shape the Organization’s deep commitment to peacekeeping,” Bonnardeaux concluded.

“The 50th anniversary of UNFICYP is a chance to pay tribute to more than 100,000 troops and police from 32 different countries who have served the cause of peace in Cyprus. It is therefore fitting that we mark the occasion with the launch of a digital archive of this iconic publication that has served the UN peacekeepers of Cyprus for five decades.” UNFICYP has issued over 1,000 separate editions of the Blue Beret, and the Magazine has undergone several facelifts and editorial evolutions. “It was first published as a weekly newsletter on 20 May 1964,” says Bonnardeaux. “Its chief aim was to provide information and a morale boost to the multinational force serving far from home here in Cyprus. To this end its early editions included articles in at least nine different languages, from Danish to Gaelic.” As an archival collection, the Blue Beret back-catalogue offers a fascinating insight into Mission life and the history of the United Nation’s involvement in Cyprus. “The issues from the 1960s and 70s in particular are a rich source of historical information,

Non-performing loans now the biggest headache for local banks LATEST Central Bank of Cyprus figures show that bad loans have reached a staggering €26.5 billion, with non-performing loans at commercial banks currently standing at 40.85%, with the CO-OP figure at 47.47%. Central Bank’s figures show that more than three out of 10 home mortgages are non-performing. The most problematic loans in the banking sector were the credit facilities granted to the construction sector that reached €7.25 billion of which 35.2% are considered as non-performing. Loans to individuals on November 30 amounted to €15.14 billion of which 61.44% fall in the NPL category. However, an IMF report published at the start of April, said in its executive summary that while deep, the 2013 recession was not as severe as anticipated. “The adjustment is occurring through both quantities and prices and signs of stabilization are emerging in the banking sector. However, the outlook remains challenging, with rising unemployment, falling credit, and increasing non-performing loans” it is noted. According to the report, looking forward, policies will need to focus on dealing with the high level of non-performing loans, further normalizing payment flows, maintaining fiscal prudence, and stepping up the implementation of the ambitious fiscal structural reform agenda. “Risks to program implementation remain significant, including due to remaining financial sector vulnerabilities and diminished political support following the break-up of the governing coalition”, it is said.

More routes from Paphos, as Nicosia shuttle arrives BUDGET CARRIER Ryanair has kicked off its Paphos summer season which includes a new route to Athens giving passengers in Cyprus a choice of ten destinations this summer. “This is the first summer where Ryanair customers can enjoy a free small second carry-on bag, “quiet flights”, allocated seats and use their personal electronic devices at all stages of their flight, making Ryanair the ideal choice for families and friends looking to get away this summer, with a new website, smartphone app, and family and business products coming soon,” said Ryanair’s Maria Macken. Meanwhile, Airport shuttle operator Kapnos has announced that it had begun operating a service from Nicosia to Paphos airport. The fare is €15 and the journey takes around one and a half hours. For reservations call 77771477 Separately, Lithuanian low-cost airline Wizz Air have announced a new route from Vilnius to Larnaca International airport starting from June 22 and Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest airline said it was expanding its tourist destinations this summer, including flights to Larnaca.

Diving in Cyprus takes centre stage with ‘Zenobia Week’ DIVERS are preparing to mark the first ever “Zenobia Week” a wreck-diving tourism promotional campaign which will be held from June 23 to June 30. The tourism campaign will promote the Zenobia shipwreck and Cyprus as a destination for scuba diving activities, while holding events including underwater photography competitions and free trips to the wreck. The Zenobia sank on her first voyage in 1980 while carrying £200 million of cargo aboard. The wreck now lies on its side at the bottom of Larnaca Bay and has become one of the island’s most popular scuba diving destinations. Last December, the 57-year old NEMESIS III was scuppered off the coast of Protaras. Three other inactive vessels have also been sent to a watery grave. The former Soviet fishing trawler Costandis, Lady Thetis a 1950s German vessel and Laboe a pre- World War Two cruiser have been sunk at different locations off the island. The government says that the new reefs have the same characteristics as natural reefs and act as nursery grounds by providing space for reproduction, growth, feeding and refuge for marine organisms. The entire project, including the four vessels, has a cost of around €300,000. The project was co-funded by the European Union, European Fisheries Fund 2007-2013 and the Cyprus Government. The initiative has been welcomed by diving schools across the island as a much needed addition to their product.

SIX OF THE BEST! That’s how Suzie and Donald Farrell describe their time since moving to Cyprus and setting up Alternative Hearing, which remains the only British Hearing Care provider on the island. So, moving into their sixth year, what changes do Suzie and Donald foresee for Alternative Hearing? “At the risk of repeating myself year-on-year, we anticipate no great changes to the service we provide and the way in which we provide it”, says Donald. “We will continue to offer a solid, no-nonsense service - no sales gimmicks, jargon, or language barriers - to hearing loss sufferers throughout the Paphos area who like the idea of having their hearing looked after by a company which is both local and readily accessible. Friendly advice, guidance, re-assurance and – pun intended – a sympathetic ear, will remain as standard!” “We feel that continuity of service is, rightly, one of Alternative Hearing’s highest priorities, and that being entrusted to look after someone’s hearing is not something to be regarded lightly”, adds Suzie. “Dispensing quality digital hearing aids is, for us, a process, not an event, and we are delighted that many of our clients have, over the years, become friends as well”. The “island life” still seems to be suiting Suzie and Donald very well. Says Donald, “I still have to pinch myself occasionally as I make my morning commute from our home in Sea Caves to our Testing Room in Coral Bay. The contrast between driving that seven sunny kilometres to work and the thousands of motorway miles I used to travel as Regional Manager with Scrivens, (one of the oldest and most respected Hearing Care companies in the UK), is still quite striking. We both know how lucky we are that this is home. Oh, and also home to the fifteen cats that have adopted us over the years!” So it’s full-steam ahead into 2014 for Alternative Hearing – already helping hundreds hear better!

Breaking A Leg At Stage One Theatre Emba The expression ‘break a leg’ given to actors on the first night of a theatrical production is not meant literally. Curtains were held in place by a series of strings called legs. With numerous curtain calls the legs might break as the curtains were opened and closed according to the amount of applause. Stage One theatre audiences are often generous with applause, standing ovations and cries of Bravo, but so far the curtains have remained intact. All that could change however with the May production of ‘Separate Tables’ by master playwright Sir Terence Rattigan. Originally conceived as two one act plays with the same setting, the Beauregard Hotel in Bournemouth and designed to showcase the versatility of two leading actors of the day, Separate Tables was an instant West End success especially for Margaret Leighton and Eric Portman who played different roles in each play. Leighton the beautiful imperious Mrs,Shankland determined to win back her erstwhile husband (Portman) and Sybil, mousy, dowdy daughter of an overbearing mother. Portman also played Major Pollock a man with a dark secret. Experienced Stage One director Chris Ekin-Wood brings his considerable expertise to the May play with many innovative ideas in his adaptation of the play. The two plays are now combined with different actors in the lead roles plus a raft of Stage One’s finest as hotel residents revealing their own take on the events which occur. Audiences can expect shocks, tears, romance and laughter in this most intriguing of plays with its exploration of the human condition. Separate Tables is sponsored by Chloe’s Chinese Restaurants and stars many of Stage one’s accomplished actors. Performances run from May 6th-10th May. All performances start at 7.30 pm. Tickets are €12 each with concessions for children. Book by email at any time on boxoffice@stageonetheatre.com Telephone bookings commence on MONDAY14TH APRIL between 10 am and 1 pm until 10th May and the box office at the theatre in Emba is also open on Mondays and Fridays only between 10 am and 12 noon April 14th until Friday 9th for bookings and collection of tickets. Phone on 99967737 Stage One runs an ongoing social programme and welcomes new members especially those with acting or backstage skills. Come along to Club night at the theatre 7 pm (next one is April 17th) and find out more. Younger members enjoy the Youth Group which meets on Saturday mornings,

Queen of Pop: Freddie Mercury Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara, was born on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar 5th Sept 1946. In 1964 Freddie and his family flew to England. As an art lover, two years later he started his education at the Ealing College of Art, where he graduated in 1969. Also being a music lover, he often went to see a band called Smile. In this band were Brian May and Roger Taylor. In 1970, Freddie became their new singer, changing the band’s name to Queen, and they took on a new bass-player in February the following year, called John Deacon. Their breakthrough was the single “Killer Queen” from the album “Sheer Heart Attack”, which was released in 1974. They became immortal with the single “Bohemian Rhapsody”, from the 1975 album “A Night At The Opera”. After setting foot in the US in 1980, with “Another One Bites” in 1984 saw their new album, called “The Works”. It contained great hits, such as “Radio Ga Ga” and “I Want To Break Free”.

After their famous performance at Live Aid, in 1985. they started working on their new album, “A Kind Of Magic”. Also holding their most famous tour ever, the “Magic Tour”, performing at Wembley Stadium twice. It was in 1987/88 when Freddie told the band he had AIDS, and only had a few years to live. His second big solo-album, “The Great Pretender” was released in 1987, then flying to Spain, where he made the magnificent album “Barcelone”. The single “Barcelona” went huge, and was also used as a theme song for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. After Barcelona, he started working with the band again. They made “The Miracle”, which was released in 1989. It was a success, with hits as “Breakthru”, “I Want It All” and “The Invisible Man”. After “The Miracle”, Freddie’s health deteriorated and he passed away on the 24th of November 1991. The music world had lost an iconic figure and to this day he is sadly missed by millions.

THE AUCTIONEERS LOT Our resident expert is Benjamin Terence Green a licensed auctioneer and valuation professional with over 30 years experience. Ben currently holds regular Friday auctions at Hammers Auction House Chloraka in Paphos.

Dear Ben

Dear Ben

I recently came across an old envelope that was in the bottom of a trunk that had belonged to my father. Inside the envelope was an old style ten pound note wrapped carefully in tissue paper, ‘SPECIMEN’ is printed across the note. The only thing I can think of was my father worked his entire life for the Bank of England. Maybe he was in possession of this note as part of his work? Can you tell us more?

I recently called a local auction house near to my home that offers a valuation service to arrange a valuation. When my mother died she left a collection of bone china to be split between my brother and myself. My brother recently put his half of the dinner service up for auction in the UK and told me how much it sold for. I decided to see what my half might be worth and see if it was worth selling. As I have no need for such an ornate dinner service and the cash would come in handy. I took some pieces along to a large draughty shed where they hold their auctions. I was not overly impressed as they told me they could not give me any idea of the value until they had a look on the internet and then proceeded to ask me what sort of money I thought I might want for it! They then suggested I leave it with them to go in their next auction as they have a wide selection of antiques going under the hammer every fortnight. Is this normal practice for valuations here in Cyprus? I could look on the internet myself! Not surprisingly, I declined their offer of leaving my mother’s bone china with them and left. I have sent you a picture of a serving dish with lid it is part of a much larger service. It says on the bottom Pallisy. Can you advise?

Dillys & Stan Pissouri

Trudie Limmasol

Dear Dillys & Stan I cannot say why your father was in possession of this bank note but I can tell you a bit about specimen notes. Under section 18(1) of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981 it is a criminal offence for any person, without the prior consent in writing of the Bank of England, to reproduce on any substance whatsoever, and whether or not on the correct scale, any Bank of England banknote or any part of a Bank of England banknote. It replaces the Forgery Act 1913, the Coinage Offences Act 1936 and parts of the Forgery Act 1861. It implements recommendations made by the Law Commission in their report on forgery and counterfeit currency. There are a number of LEGAL reasons you may want to copy a bank note from marketing to education the list goes on. Once you have gained the Bank of England written consent to reproduce the note in question you must adhere to the condition of printing the word ‘SPECIMEN’ across the note, thus not confusing it with legal tender and protecting you against possible criminal charges. The note you have is however not a copy or reproduction it is a genuine specimen note produced by and for the Bank of England. Paper money should be in mint condition with no folds or ink annotations to command premium price, this note certainly seems to be just that. Valuation for auction 1050 Euros for insurance purposes 1500 Euros. Hope that helps Ben

Before I sign off this month I would like to thank you for all your emails. Don’t forget you can follow us on facebook. On Saturday 26th of April at 1pm we have a fantastic selection of genuine antiques going under the hammer at our new auction space DOWNSTAIRS@HAMMERS. Why not pop along and enjoy a glass of wine with us. Our online catalogue will be available shortly on our own website and of course findingcyprus.com. Our regular Friday auction carries on with viewing 9.30 and auction at 11am. Remember our Friday auction has over 600 lots and finishes by 1.30pm. So no need to pack your lunch, dinner and sleeping bag!

Dear Trudie Let me address your first question first. You ask is this the way valuations are conducted in Cyprus? My answer It depends who is doing the valuation and what the valuation is being used for. A second hand furniture dealer will value your goods at the cheapest price he can buy it from you in order to sell at the highest profit to him. A general auction house may well value your goods at the price they can expect to sell it at in their own locality. An insurance valuation may value your goods at the price of its replacement value. A probate valuation may only be interested in the valuation for the purposes of probate. Actually the list of specific valuations goes on and on. From your point of view it is important that the valuation you require is being given by a professional who knows what they are talking about. The first question you must ask of anyone who offers valuation services is are they accepted for the purposes of insurance valuations in respect of the items you are asking them to value. If your prized possession was stolen would the insurance company accept a valuation certificate from that person? No one person can know everything about everything. At Alfred Abraham Hammer and Co we call on the professional s who are acknowledged and accepted experts in their chosen field. We have of over 25 of these valuation experts around the world. If I as a valuer feel the item I am looking at is beyond my scope of knowledge I have no hesitation in handing it over to the person who knows. That doesn’t mean I log on to ebay! If anyone requires information about specialised or general valuations or a list of approved valuation professionals here in Cyprus give me a call on 99931123 or email hammers@auctioneer.net. Let us now address your second question about your serving dish. You have stated this is part of a much larger service. As I only have access to this one item I shall only value this. The pattern is called camellia and indeed is Palissy. Palissy is the brand name under which the English firm of A.E. Jones and Sons, of Stoke-on-Trent, marketed their china and pottery. The name was chosen as a tribute to Bernard Palissy, the famous French potter of the 16th century, creator of Palissy ware. The company origins may date back to the 1850s, and be a split from the Jones family, such as George Jones, who produced quite upmarket items through the 1900s. They were bought out in 1958 by the Royal Worcester group, and in turn the Carborundum company that already owned Spode china and took over Hammersley china in 1972, and then Royal Worcester in 1974. Later pieces are marked Royal Worcester Group, then Royal Worcester Spode Group, but production was undoubtedly still in Longton. From 1982, production of Palissy and Hammersley ranges was merged, until their final demise in 1988. Your dinner service is dated from the 1930s as a single item for auction valuation purposes around 75 Euros make sure you insure it for at least 120 Euros. Hope that helps Ben

Hammer’s Auction House presents a full programme of specialist sales throughout 2014.

The artist Stewart Bowman Johnson shown in front of his work ‘Last supper 2011’

Exciting times follow the success of the Stewart Bowman Johnson art sale at Alfred Abraham Hammer & Companies new auction room DOWNSTAIRS@HAMMERS. The sale was held on Saturday 22nd of March 2014 and saw interest from bidders across the international art world. Paintings from the internationally acclaimed Scottish artist Bowman Johnson fetched record prices for this artists work. This vindicated the auction houses choice of bringing the auction to Paphos as opposed to Nicosia. “ I hope this finally puts to rest an attitude by many that somehow Pahos is the poorer cousin of other municipalities around the Island. “ said Benjamin Green. The driving forces behind the auction house Benjamin and Moira Green have decided to stage their ANTIQUE & COLLECTORS AUCTION on Saturday 26th of April 2014 at Hammer’s Auction House Paphos. This will be the first time an

auction of this calibre offering genuine antiques from around the world has been staged in the Paphos area. Moira Green said, “The antique & collectors trade auction has always attracted a high level of interest and a good attendance with international and local bidders, it is where the antique trade and specialist dealers along with serious buyers come to bid on a wide range of highly desirable lots.” The auction is being held at 1pm on Saturday 26th of April 2014 in the DOWNSTAIRS@ HAMMERS auction space. Viewing will be from Friday 25th of April between 2-5pm and from 10am prior to the auction start. NEW SHOP OPEN IN PEYIA The specialist pool company. “we just do pools”

H2Owen

H2Owen, owned and managed by Michael Owen, have always set their goals high and having successfully launched their retail outlet in Chloraka, they recently expanded to offer a full pool maintenance and chemical supply shop in Pissouri. Having originally begun in Coral Bay with a small “office” to co-ordinate their pool maintenance teams the next step and due to increasing demand was to open in Peyia to cover the areas Coral Bay to Polis. Michael Owen received a distinction when qualifying for his National Pool Plant Operators’ Certificate in the UK and has since brought the qualification and training to Cyprus to ensure his colleagues are qualified to the same level. All of whom passed with flying colours! H2Owen began trading from an apartment in Paphos and their first goal was to achieve 25 pools to maintain. This was achieved in just 3 months. 25 pools are now a distant memory inspiring the next leap to open an office which offered free water testing and advice. This service, also being offered from all 3 of their premises, has proven invaluable to individuals and traders alike. H2Owen use the latest technology for water testing and all team members are fully trained in using Photometers and chemical calculators to ensure accurate, reliable and safe pool water treatment as well as regular cleaning and maintenance. The services offered range from twice weekly pool cleaning, pump repairs, new borders, new liners, chemical supplies and consumables to simply offering free advice for anyone who needs that little point in the right direction when having problems maintaining their own pool. As Michael Owen confirmed, their success has been in offering a “One-Stop Pool Supply Shop” stocking everything from liners to ‘o’ rings with realistic prices, qualified staff and a guaranteed service.

Youth unemployment hits 40.5% AS CYPRUS JOBLESS FIGURE SOARS

This Month in Cyprus History

JOB CENTRE

74,000 people now without a job Youth unemployment has risen above 40.5% for the first time ever, reflecting the pain caused by the country’s crippling recession after a year of austerity under the international bailout. While the overall unemployment rate rose to staggering 16.7%, joblessness among those aged between 15 and 25 now totals 18,000. Official figures show that overall unemployment rose in February 2014 to 16.7%, from 16.5% in January, with the total number of unemployed people in Cyprus reaching 74.000. The island has just past the first anniversary of the international bailout and has been battered by tax hikes and spending cuts demanded by European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders. The unemployment rate among men in Cyprus was 17.5%, among women 15.9%. “There are certainly no easy answers to this problem”, said the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou. Last month, Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou said a number of new measures would be announced to help create jobs and revive the job market, with Cyprus due to receive €11 million from the EU’s Youth Unemployment Initiative to support the introduction of the Youth Guarantee. The funding will support apprenticeships, work placements, and job advice. “We have a large part of the young unemployed in southern Europe that do not have a job and have no prospect of finding a job in the next two years in their own countries, some of them may migrate and find jobs elsewhere but in their own countries they are unlikely to find jobs. This is what I would call the lost generation,” says Guntram Wolff, an economist and director of Bruegel, the European think tank. The average unemployment rate in the euro area stands at 11.8% among men, 12% among women and 23.5% among young people. EU Employment Commissioner Laszlo Andor said: ‘Such unacceptably high levels of unemployment are a tragedy for Europe and a signal of how serious a crisis some eurozone countries are now in.’ Greece recorded the highest unemployment with 27.5%, with 24.5% among men, 31.6% among women and 58.3% among young people. Overall, the number of unemployed in the eurozone dropped, but only by 35,000, leaving almost 19 million still out of work. Recording Studio

1938: Mr. Jim Broadbent landed at Nicosia from Basra. He is attempting to beat the air-speed record of 5 days 18 hours 15 minutes set up by Miss Jean Batten. 1947: Cyprus Demonstration Lord Winster, the new Governor, arrived in Cyprus in an R.A.F. Dakota. Greek villagers lined the road from the airport waving banners and flags and shouting slogans demanding the union of Cyprus with Greece. 2008: As the value of the sterling falls, British Post Office statistics show that Cyprus is among the most expensive countries for holidaymakers from the UK. Cyprus, along with France and Portugal, are listed as “expensive destinations” since the pound plunged. A Times newspaper report, said that Britons who exchange £100 for euros this year will get €119 at the current exchange rate, instead of €140 a year ago. 2009: Former President Glafcos Clerides celebrated his 90th birthday amongst friends and family at a special party held in Limassol. Glafcos Clerides’ political career was dominated by two struggles - first for Cyprus’s independence and latterly for its unification. He was president of Cyprus from 1993 to 2003, but his role in shaping the island’s future began many years earlier. During World War II, he served in the British Royal Air Force and was shot down over Germany, spending years as a prisoner of war. 2009: With a tattoo of Cyprus on his sizable belly, a dodgy fitting wig and the help of his son, Cypriot Demetrious Demetriou has become one of the most talked about stars on the ITV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent”. Demetriou, 41, and son Lagi, 12, performed their Stavros Flatley stage routine - a brilliant send up of Michael Flatley’s River dance. Demetriou gave up his Greek Restaurant in Winchmore Hill several years ago to spend more time with his son. 2010: The Geological Survey Department confirmed that a small earth tremor measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in Limassol. The epicenter was in the Pareklissia region north of Yerassas and its depth was 5 kilometers. 2010: Motorists in Cyprus are set to be charged for every mile they drive after a major report backed controversial plans for a nationwide road toll system. The report, called “Let’s Get Moving”, was penned by the same authors who were forced to abandon their 2 + 1 scheme last summer. The study has recommended that drivers are made to pay for travelling during peak hours or on congested routes.

The GHOST

AIRPORT

The Cyprus Reporter

takes you inside

In happier times, it was an expensive symbol of the island’s thriving economy and optimism for the future. Now, it serves as a reminder of the country’s division. The old airport in Nicosia enjoyed seven years of busy operation, before the tragic events of 1974 sealed its fate. Since then the buildings have been left to crumble in the sprawling buffer zone outside Nicosia. The ceilings are leaking and the interiors are habitats for rats, birds, feral cats and other creatures. However, for those lucky enough to be granted entrance, walking through the baggage claim area, check in desks, restaurant, health centre, immigration, shops and offices can be a surreal experience. At a cost of over a million pounds, the airport was not only a symbol of national pride; it was one of the most expensive construction projects undertaken by the government. The red-ribbon at the terminal entrance was cut by President Makarios in 1968, with a flying display by jets of the Royal Air Force as a main feature of the ceremony. After laying derelict for decades, a proposal to turn the airport into an inter-communal tax free industrial zone to encourage foreign investment in Cyprus was presented last year.

24  Issue 11 • 11th April to 8th May, 2014

The proposal by Dr Michael Paraskos, Director of the Cornaro Institute in Larnaca, suggested that turning the airport into a free zone would be a significant confidence boosting measure that would also encourage much needed foreign investment. Although there would be no tax revenue from the free zone, a condition for foreign companies setting up there could that they provide employment to Cypriots from both sides of the Green Line. Paraskos suggested foreign high tech firms in particular could be attracted to a zero-tax environment located within the European Union, boosting the local construction industry and feeding the local economy through employee wages. The last commercial airline flights out of Nicosia Airport took place in 1977 under UN Special Authorisation, when three of the remaining Cyprus Airways aircraft stranded there since the 1974 invasion were retrieved by British Airways engineers and flown to London. One of these, a Trident 2 is now on show at the Imperial War Museum Duxford. The airport site is now mainly used as the headquarters of the United Nations Force in Cyprus.

PAWS DOG SHELTER Acheleia, Pafos, Cyprus

We need YOU. Do you have a couple of hours to spare during the week? Do you love dogs? Do you have a big heart with lots of love to spare? Paws Dog Shelter have around 130 dogs in their care at any time. These vary from tiny puppies to our gentle giants like Brewster and Major. We rely on our wonderful volunteers for everything. The whole shelter is cleaned every day and the dogs are fed on fresh cooked food at around 9.00 a.m. so their basic needs are met in that way but they need so much more. We have some volunteers who come in to walk the dogs up and down our private road so if you feel that you need some regular exercise this helps you (I guarantee weight loss.) and the dogs love it. Sometimes they walk you, they are so keen to get out. It is also good to spend some time just playing with them in the runs. Ball throwing is always a favourite. Or tug of war with their rope toys. It is so important to keep them socialised and trained in basic manners. We also need help with our fundraising activities. It costs around €90,000 a year to run the shelter and all of this has to be raised again by our willing volunteers. If you can help in any way please please please get in touch by phoning 99683775 or email paws-capca@hotmail.com or contact. pawsdogshelter@gmail.com . I can assure you that the rewards are enormous in the love and affection the dogs will give to you.

Puppies Paws currently have about 40 puppies in total and are really struggling to cope with the space they have. Paws have decided to remove the fee for adopting a puppy to help get them into caring homes. All puppies are micro chipped at Paws expense and then registered. Could you give one of these adorable puppies a forever home. How could you resist APRIL MAY AUTUMN SUMMER JUNE TRIGGER who are just waiting for you

They run two shows per year in Cyprus the first held in April every year for the benefit of Cancer Patients Support this is called the Canines for Cancer show, the second, always held in October for a different charity each time called Caring Canines. Green Magic - The importance of FIVE a day Many of us have grown up with our parent’s words ringing in our ears about the importance of fruit and vegetables in our diet. The Government research from around the World confirms that we need to eat a minimum of five (5) servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day.

Co Enzyme Q10

Why? Because there is a daily battle going on inside our bodies.

A great source of natural Iron, Protein and Beta Carotene (18mg per gram). Chlorella also provides100% of the RDA of Vitamin B12 in just 7 grams and contains 10 times more Chlorophyll than Alfalfa.

Do you want to be on the winning side? Fresh fruit and vegetables are packed with things called “Antioxidants” these are, in simple terms, “the good army” in our bodies. They go around mopping up the free radicals, “the bad army”, caused by our everyday lives and activities. The stress, chemicals, pollution and lack of exercise all contribute to the battle slowly being lost within our bodies. We are also constantly consuming hidden ingredients such as, Colourings, Flavourings and Additives which also cause oxidative stress and ageing.

Product Conclusion

Survey reveals ‘shockingly low’ exercise levels of people in Cyprus A STAGGERING 72% of Cypriot women never exercise according to a new survey.

green magic’s massively high ORAC value (Antioxidant value), 1849 units per serving, can help repair damage caused by free radicals and ensures the body has all the essential nutrients it needs for younger looking skin. The scientific community agrees that the body creates between 3,800 – 5,000 ORAC units of damage per dayjust going through our normal lives. It is estimated that an elite athlete who is in full time training can createup to 10,000 ORAC units a day of damage, whilst somebody who is undergoing chemotherapy as a treatment for cancer or similar can create up to 12,000 units plus of damage at a cellular level.

A recent Eurobarometer survey also shows that 54% of Cypriots respondents say they never exercise.

One serving of the green magic delivers approximately the same food value as 5 - 7 helpings of organically grown vegetables.

Cypriot women who replied that they never or seldom exercise reach an astounding 72% compared to 57% for men.

Nutrition ResearchInstitute Key Ingredients Spirulina Grown in Hawaii and known as the ‘eating sunshine’ plant, Spirulina is positively bursting withEnzymes, Minerals, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants and PhytoNutrients which increase the body’s wellbeing andoptimise good health. Barley and Wheat Grass Juice The key role is to purify and cleanse the body and the blood. They achieve thisthrough a process of neutralising harmful toxins. Barley Grass naturally contains 11 times the Calcium of driedcow milk and 5 times the level of natural Iron as fresh spinach. Packed with a powerful source of Enzymes,Wheat Grass also offers a great source of Chlorophyll which is referred to as nature’s sunshine.

Antioxidants, these come from Co Enzyme Q10 and Royal Jelly Possibly 2 of the most powerful naturalantioxidants in the World offering up 9 different B Vitamins and 22 Amino Acids, which create the buildingblocks of life itself. These ingredients supercharge the body’s natural immune system as well as helping thebody to produce cellular energy.

The percentage goes up to 64% when the participants who replied “seldom” are added. The average EU28 “never” replies stood at 42% while if the “seldom” replies are added the pan-European average comes to 59%.

Younger men, aged between 15 and 24 appear to be more energetic, with a mere 28% say the seldom or never exercise. The percentages go up in the age group 25 – 39 (49%) and even further in the next two age groups with men between the age of 40 – 54 seldom or never exercising by 65% and men over 55 replying in the great majority (77%) that they never or seldom exercise. On the other hand age does not seem to play a catalytic role in whether Cypriot women exercise or not, since respondents who seldom or never exercise start at 63% in women aged 15 – 24, continue with 71% in the age group of 25 – 39, 72% in the age group 40 – 54 and 77% for over 55s. Last year it was revealed that over 2,000 people a year die from heart disease in Cyprus annually, making it the leading cause of death on the island. Doctors said that by avoiding smoking, exercising regularly and following a healthy diet, 80 per cent of these early deaths can be avoided.
