Fundraisers will benefit children in Honduras
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDChristian ministry Por Qué No Tú will host dessert fundraisers on Tuesday, April 9, at Waterway Church, 550 Waterway Road, Oxford, and on Thursday, April 11, at Mt. Vernon Christian Church, 1 Lighthouse Drive, Kirkwood. Both events are free, and they will begin at 7 p.m. Guests will have an opportunity to learn about Por Qué No Tú’s sponsorship program to benefit children living in Honduras.

Guests may enjoy various desserts and socialize before the program begins with an update from executive director Justin Hollinger on Por Qué No Tú’s projects. Yamie Castillo, a student who was previously sponsored through the program, will give a presentation after Hollinger’s update. Attendees will then have an opportunity to sign up for a sponsorship or make a one-time donation to the organization before the fundraiser concludes at 8 p.m.
Por Qué No Tú is a Christian nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the lives of people
living in Providencia, Honduras. The ministry’s name is derived from a Spanish phrase that translates to “Why not you,” and it was created in 2013 by missionaries Bob and Sandy Martin. In 2011, the couple went on a mission trip to Honduras to assist with the construction of an orphanage there; Bob and Sandy started the nonprofit, which was initially called “Why Not You Ministries,” after the completion of the project to continue their work in the Honduran town of San Antonio de Cortés.

Every year, young women in Lancaster County have an opportunity to participate in the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Pageant. On Feb. 3, six titleholders were crowned during the contest at Ephrata High School, qualifying them to advance to the Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen Scholarship competitions in June. This year’s winning contestants include Noelle Schneider of Quarryville, Julianna Billings of Peach Bottom, AmandaGrace Krier of Levittown, Kathryn Davis of Willow Street, Whitney Ridler of Manchester, and Maggie Roe of Lancaster.

During the scholarship pageant, each contestant gave a unique performance and highlighted a community service project near to her heart. Schneider, who received the title of Miss Lancaster County, performed a harp arrangement that combined Handel’s “Passacaglia” and Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” in a mashup of the classical and R&B genres. Schneider presented her service project, MAOSmiles: Delivering Hope to Hospitalized Children.

First responder organizations receive grants
Grants were recently awarded to first responder organizations through the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program created by the General Assembly and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Office of the State Fire Commissioner. Projects eligible for funding include construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training, reduction of existing debt, education and public outreach, and staff recruitment and retention efforts.
All fire companies, EMS services and volunteer rescue squads are eligible to apply for the annual grant program, which is funded solely with state gaming proceeds. This year’s funding amounts are contingent on the recipients filing their grant agreements with the Office of the State Fire Commissioner by July 1.
Thirteen fire and ambulance companies in the 43rd legislative district were awarded nearly $257,000 in grants through the program. This year’s grant recipients are Akron Volunteer Fire Company, $15,396; Bareville Fire Company No. 1, $14,812; Ephrata Community Ambulance Assocation Inc., $15,000; Farmersville Fire Company, $15,785; Garden Spot Fire Rescue, $29,952; Gordonville Fire Company and Ambulance Association, $29,812; Intercourse Fire Company, $14,423; Lincoln Fire Company No. 1, $29,952; Martindale Vol. Fire Company, $14,618; New Holland Ambulance Association, $30,000; Pioneer Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1, $16,757; and Upper Leacock Fire Company, $13,840; and West Earl Fire Company No. 1, $16,174.
Several grants were also awarded organizations in the 100th district. The recipients are Bart Township Fire Company, more than $15,395; Christiana Community Ambulance Association Inc., $10,000; Christiana Fire Company No. 1 Inc., more than $16,951; Quarryville Fire Company No. 1, more than $15,979; Paradise and Leaman Place Fire Company, $14,228; Strasburg Fire Company No. 1, $14,617; and Robert Fulton Fire Company, more than $13,839.

Billings said she chose this particular song due to how deeply its lyrics and title resonated with her; the 2023 Solanco High School graduate has been dancing for 15 years, and she currently works as an assistant coach at Debbie School of Dance in Quarryville. “Dance has always been a big part of my life. I couldn’t imagine not dancing again,” added Billings. “This song perfectly captured the sport that I’ve given my life to.”

Although Por Qué No Tú continues to assist with construction projects in Honduras, its new leadership has shifted its focus to support Honduran children. The ministry’s child sponsorship program provides children with school uniforms, classroom supplies, Christmas gifts and after-school activities.

After her diagnosis, Billings said she had difficulty finding information about Chiari malformation, and few of her friends and family members had ever heard of it. Billings’ goal is to use her platform as Miss Red Rose City to raise awareness of the condition and share her personal experience with it. “It was shocking to me I got this big diagnosis but no one had even heard of it. I hope to educate people on the signs of Chiari, so people can find it before it’s too late,” Billings said.
Krier, Ridler, Roe and Davis were awarded the titles of Miss Heart of Lancaster, Miss Red Rose City’s Teen, Miss Heart of Lancaster’s Teen and Miss Lancaster County’s Teen, respectively.
The scholarship contest is coordinated by the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization. The program seeks to empower young women across the nation by providing them with a platform to share their input on critical topics and hone various leadership skills as they compete for scholarship awards.
